I was at a pub quiz where this was a question. I wrote that it was assumed to be a meteor that exploded. The answer they wanted was a volcanic eruption, and so I got 0 points. I was furious.

I read ages ago that the light from the Tunguska event was visible from as far away as London. I never looked for a reputable source on that - the casual sources I was reading mentioned newspapers of the period - but it's an interesting footnote if true.
