does the Bible allow women to serve as senior pastors over a church or is this a role that is reserved only for men we are finally going to talk about it today on the beat hey everyone my name is Alan Parr thank you all so much for tuning in to the beat if this is your first time here on this channel we answer frequently asked questions about the Christian faith we talked about dating and relationships from a Christian perspective and we do all sorts of other Bible based videos as well so if you're new here consider subscribing okay so I need to pray before we start this video father god I pray that you give me the strength to be true to your word but at the same time be sensitive to where everyone is on this most controversial issue in Jesus name I pray amen yes I needed to pray because this happens to be the most controversial and sensitive issue within Christianity today now let me just start off by saying what I'm gonna present in this video is my personal view on this particular subject through my own personal study of the Word of God you may have a different view based on what you have read in the Bible and if you do I totally respect that I still love you I may disagree with you but I still respect your view and all I ask is that you would still respect the view that I have as well now before I get into this view I want to make sure I lay down some very clear guidelines so that we can have a healthy discussion on this topic because if I don't this conversation is gonna go left very very fast so guideline number one if you're going to leave a comment below don't appeal to your emotions in other words don't leave comments like with a Bible of sexes the Apostle Paul is chauvinistic and all men are chauvinist those comments are going too quickly bit get deleted from the thread the second thing I ask is that if you leave a comment please do not appeal to logic in other words saying things like well I just feel like women should be able to do a B and C for I just feel I just feel all those things are logic no offense but we're really not interested in what you feel or what I feel we're really trying to get to the heart of what does God have to say about this particular subject in Scripture number three let's refrain from appealing to culture in other words we don't want to say well because women are leading in areas of politics or on the job and corporate America and all sorts of other places in our culture today we want to be sure that we keep the conversation specific to church leadership and what the Bible has to say about that and finally guideline number four do not appeal to your experience so saying things like well you know what my pastor is a woman she pours into me and she has the gift of pastoring and preaching way better than most of the men that I know once again we know that experience is not always consistent with what the Bible has to say so basically what I'm trying to say is that if you disagree with me or anyone else on this thread I want to ask you to use scripture in your response study this out make an educated response using the Bible to support whatever view you have with all of that being said I want to share with you several facts about women's roles in ministry and also talk about a couple of common objections as well fact number one women have and always will play an extremely significant role in advancing the kingdom there are several examples of this sprinkled throughout the New Testament first of all you have a woman named Priscilla along with her husband Aquila taking aside a man named Apollo's so I'm a traveling evangelist at the time and correcting his theology in teaching him sound biblical doctrine second of all we see in Luke chapter 8 verses 2 & 3 that Jesus himself mentioned several women that supported him in ministry thirdly you have Paul in Romans chapter 16 verses 1 through 16 lists about 16 people and about 10 of them at least were women who strongly supported him in his ministry in addition to this in Acts chapter 21 we see that Philip had four unmarried daughters all of whom were prophesying or speaking forth the Word of God once again in 1st Corinthians chapter 11 verse 5 Paul allows and even encourages women to pray and to prophesy in church for these reasons and others I think that you could make a very very strong case for women being able to speak or preach or share or whatever you want to call it in a public church service fact number two different roles does not diminish a person's value so whenever we look through the scriptures it is very clear that God is a God of order in other words God has set up certain orders in the home he set up certain orders in church and so we look at the home there is clearly a distinction between men's role as a husband and also the woman's role as a wife but this does not in any way shape or form make the woman less important than the man just because she serves in a different role different function different capacity also we look at the Godhead we have God the Father and we have God the Son who submits to God the Father then we have God the Holy Spirit who speaks the words of Jesus Christ all of them have a different function different purpose different role but all of them are equally considered God no one member of the Trinity is considered more God if you will than the others just because they have a different role in the same way I believe that the Bible supports that not just women but people in general have a different role different function in church but in no way because they have a different role or different gifts or whatnot does this diminish their value in their contribution to the ministry fact number three there are no known women pastors in the New Testament in other words we don't see any examples of women leading or overseeing or shepherding a flock of people now I know what some of you are thinking you want to go jump back to the Old Testament to say well what about Miriam what about Deb what about hauled up we must be very careful about trying to use an example from the Old Testament to try to prove something that's going on in the New Testament in the Old Testament God was dealing specifically with the nation of Israel in a different way what we want to do is we don't want to look at the nation of Israel we want to look at how God is setting up leadership within the New Testament church so in the case of someone like Deborah she was a judge over the nation of Israel but not a pastor over a local church fact number four Jesus selected all men to serve as his apostles or to establish the leadership of the New Testament church some people may point to this and say that you know what because he's elected all men this is a proof or indication that it is God's perfect will that men take the leadership role of overseeing the local church fact number five there are passages of Scripture in the New Testament that seem to suggest that the role of senior pastor is reserved primarily for men for instance first Timothy chapter three gives the qualifications of anyone who wants to be an overseer or an elder or a pastor of a church so when you look at first Timothy chapter 3 it is clear that as you go through that chapter that Paul is using specifically and exclusively the male pronoun he it says that he must be the husband of one wife he must be able to manage his household well and so this passage in and of itself seems to suggest that God has reserved the role of senior pastor once again senior pastor specifically for men within the same point the text that has created the most controversy in the entire New Testament on this issue is 1st Timothy chapter 2:11 through 14 and I am not about to try to go through that particular passage of Scripture but I do want to point out one thing in terms of church leadership it's interesting that Paul does not go back to culture and say well because the culture is changing this is what it needs to be instead he goes back to creation something that always was and always will be and he says that you know what just like man was created first the woman was created to be a helpmate for the man this has led some people to believe that because Paul does go all the way back to creation that this is God's order or God's will for leadership within the New Testament church and then finally there's another passive scripture in 1st Corinthians chapter 14 verses 34 through 35 but quite frankly I personally even myself believed that Paul was dealing with a specific cultural issue at that time going on in the city of Corinth and I really do not believe that he was saying that women should not speak in church at all I think that is a stretch and I really don't believe that that's what that passage of scripture is saying fact number six women can possess the spiritual gift of pastoring or shepherding without necessarily serving in the role of senior pastor in other words she may have the spiritual gift of being able to oversee to lead to shepherd to rebuke to hold people accountable to care for a group of people but not necessarily being called to lead a group of men or an entire church so for instance she may feel the calling to shepherd a women's group or a life group or a children's ministry or a youth ministry or some other type of ministry where she can speak wisdom into people's lives even on a greater level than a man could speaking of that it is also possible that a woman could possess a stronger gift of speaking preaching and pastoring than a man can nobody's arguing that women do many things way better than men do but the question that we have to get to is in what context is the Bible encourage women to use these particular gifts okay so here a couple of common objections to the idea that women should not serve as senior pastors some people may say well the reason why they were not permitted to be pastors in the New Testament was because women were not educated enough to be a pastor now the issue with that is that nowhere in the New Testament does it suggest or even say that education is a prerequisite for people being able to serve in a particular role in the church primarily the role of senior pastor another objection is a people will point to Galatians chapter 3 verse 28 where it says that now in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek there is neither slave nor free there's neither female or male so people will say you know what this is proof right there that there is no distinction anymore between men and women men should be able to do everything women can do and women should be able to everything that men can do but they take that scripture out of context because that context is talking about salvation it's saying that you know what in terms of salvation men can be saved women can be saved oohs can be saved Greeks can be saved slaves freeze there is no distinction between who can come to a relationship with Jesus Christ so this verse is not talking in any way shape or form about church leadership so once again I just want to say that this is a very very sensitive and controversial issue the most controversial issue that's going on in the church today and I want to state one more time that this is my view this is my perspective and I totally get it if you have a different perspective matter of fact I would love to hear your perspective so please do me a favor if you agree disagree leave a healthy and respectful comment below so that we can actually dialogue and have some discussion about this and I can learn from you in terms of what it is that you feel the Bible teaches and maybe you can learn some things from me if you like this video
