[Music] hi there guys um something a little bit different this week uh I thought I'd uh talk a little bit little bit about shotgun cartridges there's a lot of sort of myths and a lot of um General sort of misinformation really out there about what shells can do what and so on and so forth we managed to pick up a lot of um a fair few more hard to get shells um at the British shooting show uh the other weekend so what I thought I'd do is I'd give you a bit of a run through about the different loads that I've got here um show you what they look like and at the well for the second part of the video we'll be demonstrating the sort of energy and the power of of each load um you can see I actually tried to sort of write on the numbers with a marker for each tin lid but unfortunately my pens run out so you have to excuse that so uh so yeah I mean this there a lot of people assume that the lower the number the um more effective the load um you can see here for instance um that's double or Buckshot as our American friends I'm sure will be very familiar with but here for instance is a number three now you would have you would think that that would be less powerful than that but that has got a 54 G load and it's a 3in shell so whilst it they may be small projectiles there's a lot more of them so there's lots of things to consider with shotgun cartridges depending obviously what you're going to use them for um but anyway I'll start at the beginning rather than going to the right to the end straight away here we have uh 7 and a half shot now in the UK that's generally considered to be clay pigeon shot basically a lot of people do use it for sort of pigeon shooting and stuff um personally I don't find it has the penetration um but there again you know guys out there are much better shots than me will swear by them cuz they give really good patterns and if I pour this out you should get an idea of what the shot looks like bring it up to the camera don't well you can see that as you can see they're pretty small little tiny little balls of lead not a massive amount that's 28 G there well minus one or two cuz I tell you it's a right ball L getting these out but I splitting them everywhere um and you know this is what they look like Bo BOGO cheap loads good for um clay pigeon shooting now the next one along this is one of my favorite loads actually this is El VIP uh these are 30 grand number six uh High brass and I mean that's the other thing to talk about I suppose is is the length of the brass everyone always assumes the higher the brass the more energy um and it's funny because it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy really because uh generally man manufacturers tend to make the brass longer if it's a more powerful load but in terms of Technology there's no real reason for them to do that but these are pretty hard-hitting um if I pull that one out you can see it's just ever so slightly bigger than the 7 and A2 if you look there's it's not much in it but believe me when it comes to shooting pigeons that little bit of extra size makes all the difference now next up we have some more number six now these obviously have got exactly the same size lumps of lead in as the VIPs but as you can see these are much longer these are 3-in Magnums um I believe these are 54 G I think they are um 52 gam actually uh oh no no no no no 50 g sorry yeah these are 50 g so whilst they're the same you know size lumps of lead you'll see there's an awful lot more of them like loads more so if you look in comparison to what was in the VIP you can see whilst they're the same size this one there got a lot more in it so that's a lot more lead going down range and hitting whatever it is you're you're shooting um I think uh well to be honest need some pretty hefty Hefty wood pigeon for that to be required but you know always got to have a bit of a laugh with now these These are uh number fives again pretty BOGO Saga cartridges um 32 G I've been using these quite a lot they're good for high Birds um because the extra sort of size of the shot um means that they've got a bit more energy when they hit the target so if you're shooting something that's like 45 50 yards these can be quite useful um and also you know a lot of birds I find that you you'd wing with number six you hit them with these and they're going to go down now I'll just pull those out and you can see again these are just that little bit bigger you know there isn't a lot of difference in it between the sizes I mean I don't know how well you can even see that on camera but that's the the 50 g number six and this is 32 G number five but it does make all the difference now next we have these now this is a 36 G uh number four now these are generally used for like I guess shooting foxes not that I shoot a lot of foxes but uh this is the sort of load that I'd prefer to use in that situation admittedly a lot of these loads I i' probably never use we sort of bought them for the novelty Factor really just to show you what they can do I mean these number six these uh six uh Magnums probably you know probably wouldn't need those for much really to be honest um but anyway I'll pull these out now you'll find as the generally speaking as the shot size increases you need a little bit more weight because otherwise you don't get that many pallets and more pallets means a better pattern so it's quite important to do next we have number three these are number three 3-in Magnums now these are quite hard to get in the UK because generally speaking these are these are for sort of shooting geese and generally speaking because geese a wild foul you steal shot in the UK um but you can still get them because you can still shoot geese you know over land and stuff using lead shot now these again a just that little bit bigger um and again that's a really heavy load you're talking I mean these are getting quite big now as you can see uh these are these are 52 G so that's a big load that's a lot of lead going down range now next we have some number ones unfortunately we didn't get a hold of any number twos so we haven't gone everywhere through the scale but you should get an idea these are number one two and three 2 and 3/4 inch so standard size um mini Magnums uh in as I said number one 40 G so you know a sort of medium load really for for a shot size that that it is in fact I would say these are probably less devastating than number threes to be honest but you'll see again the shot size just increases that little bit more really getting quite big now now again I'm not sure what I shoot those with really to be honest I mean I suppose you could shoot foxes and things with them but you know be a bit Overkill really now last but not least we've got the ubiquitous double or Buckshot which is perfectly legal in the UK however it's quite hard to get because not many people use it cuz there's not much you'd really need to use it for um the interesting thing with double or buck is the shot size is so big you see all this white stuff in there you can pick that up on camera you can see one bit of shot sticking out now all that white stuff is just to basically pack the shot together so as it goes down the barrel it sort of retains its its energy cuz otherwise all the spaces in between the lumps of shot would mean you would lose energy as they far down the barrel so I'll pull this out and you'll see that there should be there should be nine of them in there I think total y That's it as you can see those are really nasty I can see why the Americans like to use these for for defense to be honest because these are pretty much like about 8 and 1 half millim so it'd be a bit like you know well I mean obviously we'd never do that in this country but if somebody did shoot a burglar in the states with one of these it's a bit like being I'd imagine being shot with a handgun of some sort quite a number of time nine times at once so very nasty however I suspect that you'll probably find real world that something like this would be far more effective because with these um let say 30 yard you're going to get a pattern and you're going to still hit stuff with a lot of lead as where at 30 yards with this I'll have to test it and we'll soon find out um as you will see but I'm suspecting at 30 yards you'll probably only get like one lump of one lump of lead actually On Target the rest of them will probably miss because of the size of the spread um you know I'm not to be honest holding out much hope but you know we'll wait and see now in the second part of this video which is coming up in a moment we're going to test all of these so uh I hope you like the footage and let me know what you think so then time for the the uh demonstration we got catalogs we going to shoot them at each one and we'll see what the sort of penetration is like and things so here we are these are number 7 and A2 ready okay yeah [Applause] that's quite a good pattern as you can see went about halfway through um what page it get to wow that's split but that's probably not all the way through is it it's just the impact of it the actual shots probably gone yeah that far so what page is that 363 363 for number s and a half smelly water page nice pattern yes number six 30 G hang ready yeah a bit more of an effect oh yeah that's gone much deeper isn't it yeah 267 torches it didn't go as far then seemingly do you not think I don't know 363 last time it it but if you look at the actual P paper tears yeah it's 389 yeah that's just tears a lot further that's not actually penetration is it well sorts it's energy you're taking a big chunk out of it though isn't it nice pattern you can see the wooding there yeah anyway get to the more exotic loads now number six 3in Magnum W myself a bit for this one yes [ __ ] it out recoil that Thomas yes let's have a look yeah destroyed the piece of wood as well that we're using as a back stop but uh yeah that's hell of a pattern we're through to 471 it still got impact 625 673 roughly but yeah pretty effective number five 32 G shouldn't hit quite as hard as the the Magnum but we'll see ready yeah made jump yeah that come from off from oh yeah my God that's a bit nastier it's a bit of wadding that's up to 363 I think it just broke it in half at about 411 oh well number four 36 G ready yeah SP go quite nice look quite a nice even pattern again it's just blown it in half this is quite interesting it doesn't seem to have huge amount of impact but again it's got up to about 471 so it didn't actually impact as much as a number five seemingly quite surprising oh well start to get more hardcore now this is number three 3in Magnum 52 G i' lean into this one if are you Tom I think I I do yes ready yeah Jesus how do that feel that was uh h of a kick on it think what 3 and half in is like again yeah that's made quick quite a mess we've got down to again not a huge amount of penetration though 391 oh well this is uh Number One Mini Magnum 40 G ready yeah fair play made it Fly that smells nice there nothing like cordite in the morning yeah that's made quite a mess of it I think I'm going to be proven wrong here I think the double or is going to be the nastiest 477 too bad and last but not least double or buck shot ready yeah [ __ ] ell yes I think I'm going to be Pro him wrong look at that now that is pretty serious Jesus there's quite a lot on target to be fair that's like 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 oh I think one went on top of the other there by the looks things but Jesus yeah I think I have been proven wrong because that penetration you're talking right through you can see the bit of lead there look to page, 202 so yeah it looks like the double up Buck was the most effective to be fair however as I said before and if you look how much spread there is at 30 yards I reckon these are going to be all the way out here but it's a an effective round so what you think Tom are these exotic loads good fun yeah absolutely not much good for pigeons yeah not really but you try those 50 g number sixes yeah they could be good but it's all in good fun any anyway so we've got a bit of a laugh bit of cleaning up to do now as well bits of wood everywhere so anyway as I always say like And subscribe
