i'm not totally sure that i can tell the difference between 1080 and 4k footage i mean i know there has to be a difference i'm just not sure i've actually seen it side by side and looked at it and thought there it is i see it i see the difference i hear about people recording in 1080 and then up sampling to 4k when they export for youtube which makes sense 1080 is a lot smaller file it's a lot easier to work with i'm just not super sure i know exactly what i'm losing if i do that i know the 1080 is going to be softer but maybe that's fine maybe it looks more cinematic and sometimes i record in 1080 and export in 4k sometimes i record in 4k and export in 1080. i don't know what i'm doing i'm just lost because i've never taken the time to actually look at it side by side and say that's 1080 and that's 4k and now i see the difference anyway i just have to know i have to see it with my own eyes don't you [Music] i make videos about making videos so it's a little crazy that i don't know the answer to this question off the top of my head does the quality difference between 1080 and 4k justify the additional difficulty in filming and editing in 4k we need a test no better than a test we need an experiment i'm going to go record a bunch of footage in both 1080 and 4k i have a sony a7 3 so it'll do both perfectly then i'm going to make a video i'll take all the clips and put them together on one timeline and i'll jumble the order so i don't know if the 1080 is coming first or the 4k is coming first i'll start by testing myself to make sure it's safe and then i'm going to test you [Music] wow 1080 refers to video footage that is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall 4k footage on the other hand is pixels wide and 2160 pixels tall that actually means that 4k footage has four times as much data as 1080 footage which means more detail and picture quality obviously but it also means it takes up a lot more space on your camera it's harder to record it's harder to edit because it requires more memory and it takes up a lot more hard drive space the name 4k refers to the width which is nearly 4 000 pixels across why do they call 1080 footage by its vertical axis well they call 4k footage by its horizontal access i don't know marketing people are the worst anyway i'm going to take this footage i have now and put it all onto a 4k timeline and i'll put the 1080 and 4k clips next to each other but i'll jumble the order so i don't know which one comes first i'll number each set and label one of them a and one of them b so i can keep track of them later then i'll export the video and begin the experiment so i'm going to watch these clips and see how much of a difference there really is between the 1080 footage and the 4k footage if there's a big difference i should get every single one of them right if it's only a tiny difference i'll get some of them right and some wrong so let's see what happens [Music] i can totally see it so i'm going to show you this footage in each set there's going to be a 1080 clip and a 4k clip you take a look and see if you can tell the difference on whatever device you're using and it would help us all a lot if you would leave a comment let us know what you thought of the difference in the footage and what device you were viewing it on are you ready are you sure okay here we go [Music] so [Music] [Music] so please leave a comment let us know what device you were viewing it on and what you thought of the difference not just which one's 4k but which one you liked better maybe the 1080 footage is a little softer but maybe that's okay maybe it looks a little more film-like or cinematic maybe the 4k is too digital too clinical as for the tests that i performed here are the results so the basic answer is yes you can totally tell the difference between 4k footage and 1080 footage the 4k footage is significantly more detailed and much more crisp now the question is whether that's a good thing whether it's too much information whether it looks hyper real instead of realistic it's the same problem with footage shot in 60 frames a second it's almost too smooth it's hyper realistic it doesn't look natural does 4k footage fall into that category is it too much detail too much information is it hyper realistic instead of realistic does it become a distraction to the story you're trying to tell or the message you're trying to convey that i don't know yet i'm gonna have to keep experimenting with it and see what i like and you're gonna have to do the same for yourself but seeing the footage side by side like that has at least let me understand what that difference is so i can make an informed decision to be honest i really like the quality of the 4k at least for the kind of content i'm producing but i'm still trying to decide if it's worth filling up my memory cards overheating my camera and melting my cpu when i try to edit it it might be [Music] you
