hello everyone and welcome back to another video my name is Samuel with cedarpine designs and in today's video it's going to be a lot different than what I typically like to do I was on my way to my parents house and I seen this free piece of furniture on the side of the road and I wanted to check it out and I decided that hey I can maybe you know scrap this thing for some scrap wood because I like to keep a stockpile of just random wood that I could use for one of my projects I thought maybe hey I can take the handles off of it and stuff like that and just take it apart and reuse some of the stuff so I picked it up and I decided to take it home thank you so after I got home and I unloaded it I was really curious to see what kind of shape this thing was in and I can tell already that was in really rough shape but I wanted to see if everything was there to actually put this thing back together so after a couple of days of having it I looked it over and I decided I was going to put it together and see what I can make out of this thing and see if it was salvageable to make something out of it and I figured it might be something that I could just use in my shop to store Just Like Old Hardware sandpapers stuff like that so I'm going to break it down and put it back together and see what we got [Music] as I'm cleaning and vacuuming out all the garbage and debris that was inside of this thing I did notice that the construction of it was made of solid plywood and from what I can tell it seems to be handmade somebody must have made this um just for something that they needed because this isn't something that you would find in a store so I decided that it was actually pretty solid so like I said I wanted to clean it up put it back together and see what we have [Applause] foreign at this point I noticed that the drawers I was having a little trouble getting them in I wasn't sure if the orientation that they were in before I wasn't getting it down right but it did seem to have a little bit of warping on the sides making it hard for the drawers to fit in and some of the side rails did seem to be a little shoot up and I was a little discouraged at this point because I'm used to working on stuff that's um you know fairly larger and in better shape that I can flip and turn for a profit but this one was going to be a personal project so I really wanted to see it through all the drawers were there this middle drawer that you see me putting in now it was a little hard to get it in but after it went in it does have the drawer face for it and all the handles are there so now I'm trying to figure out what I can do with this box foreign so the first thing that I wanted to do was take it all back apart and I wanted to try to remove all the hardware and see if there was something I can do about this paint just to kind of see what's underneath it and see if there was something that I can do to try to make this thing a little more appealing for my garage so after giving this thing a once over I did notice that some of the drawer guides were broken toward the front of them causing them to Sag a little prematurely so that was something that I was going to have to address but I think that I could take care of that and then I did notice that it had these screw holes two rows on each side I'm not sure if this thing was part of another cabinet set maybe screwed to more of these boxes I wasn't really too sure what those things were going to be used for but I decided to grab my stripper and start removing all the paint so I can see what's underneath so the pros and cons to using this chemical stripper is that it does remove all of this stuff fairly quickly within about 10 to 15 minutes you can start scraping this thing um one thing that I did learn from the comment section here on YouTube is that if you put plastic over it it doesn't dry out so that you can just let it sit there and do its thing but some of the cons to this is that it does smell really strong and it can be pretty messy so just try to keep things pretty clean and work in a well ventilated area so once I started to strip the top down I can tell that it was just that unfinished plywood on top I wasn't sure if I was going to be painting this thing again or if I was just going to sand it and try to treat it um I just at this point I wasn't really sure so I pulled out my mineral spirits just so I can use it as a cleaner to get more of that paint off and also it does deactivate the chemical stripper so that way it doesn't stay working the entire time foreign this down with mineral spirits the best thing to use is probably either a piece of steel wool or like a wire brush for me I always use steel wool because it's pretty cheap wire brushes can be a little more expensive and then I just use a rag to wipe all the excess off so while I let the stripper do its thing on the side of this little cabinet I decided to remove all the drawer handles because I wanted to see if it was something that I was going to reuse and see what kind of shape and wood that these drawer faces were made of and from what I can tell from the back it looks like Pine just like a cheaper material but I wanted to start getting the paint off of those because I knew that this was going to be a long process foreign after about 15 to 20 minutes I removed the plastic and started to strip all the paint off of the sides and I did notice that they were using veneer on the sides so that makes me think that maybe these weren't attached to something like another dresser because I couldn't understand why you would use veneer on the sides and not the top and then attach it to another dresser but I decided to just keep moving forward and clean those cracks out with a screwdriver just to get all the rest of the paint out and then work on these drawer faces foreign [Music] so for the drawer faces I wasn't too worried about removing all the paint because I knew that I was going to come in later with a sander and sand these down to bare wood so I just cleaned them up as best as I could just to get a bulk of that paint off of it and then I move over using 150 grit sandpaper just so I can sand everything down smooth and see if I can either get all of that paint out so I can either keep this natural or I can decide to paint it in a different color [Music] thank you foreign [Music] so after sanding this thing down pretty much to bare wood the veneer on the sides doesn't seem to be salvageable it has too much paint in the Grain and too many chips so for this project I decided that it would be a perfect time for me to use my new surf prep sander it is a 3x4 and when I tell you this thing is amazing it is no exaggeration I love this thing and I've been wanting one for such a long time this thing was given to me by surf prep those folks are really nice they are out of San Diego and this thing will tell you it works wonders I was going to buy one myself but they were gracious enough to give me one and I will be leaving a coupon code down in the description below if anybody is interested in checking these things out you do get a discount and they are a little pricey but for me it's perfect because I use it a lot I sand every day and these things come with attachments and everything to work with different types of vacuum cleaners as well as different types of attachments for the Sandpaper I really love their foam padded sandpaper because it really helps to Contour around different types of of edges it's just an amazing sander even if you're not interested you probably would want to just check them out anyway just to see what they offer point in the project it was time to address those drawer guides and I needed a way to remove some of the materials so that I can get it back down to where it was nice and solid so I just got a chisel that was the exact size of these grooves and I'm just chipping it away and pulling out all that stuff because I'm going to attempt to replace them with some new pieces because these guides are made out of fine the stuff seems to fall apart as you're trying to Chisel it away so I have to be really careful when I am removing those and here you can see the surf prep sander doing what it does best it has that foam padded 150 grit piece of sandpaper on it and it is really contouring around those edges so that way you don't create flat spots and that's one of the features that I love the most about this sander it's very comfortable and it helps you to get into all those tiny little details uh areas that you can't get with an orbital sander so shouts out to Surf prep foreign I decided to spare no expense on really just getting into every little nook and cranny of this piece because it is small enough to where I can take my time on it and actually really get in there to all the fine details I'm using a little bit of chemical stripper so that I can remove all the little paint that's stuck inside of those grooves because if not there's really no way to sand those out without sanding into it too deep and this was one of the easiest ways to kind of pick it out here so for the drawer that had the face missing I backed all of these staples out that was holding it on because I'm going to use sand the face and everything about it down flush so that way I can reattach the drawer face and I did notice that some of the joinery was loose and unfitting so I'm just re-gluing that and I'm going to use my pin nailer rather than um a clamp so that way I can just have extra reinforcement because these things like I said are made out of pine it's not the strongest wood in the world so I want to just make sure that it doesn't come apart again foreign [Music] the reason why I was super excited about starting this project is because I had a couple of new tools in the shop that I really wanted to get my hands on one is this bandsaw it's a nine inch bandsaw and an oscillating drum sander spindle sander combo and I'm using this to make the drawer guides and these tools really make this process a lot easier because I have other tools in the shop that aren't really capable of doing this as easy so I was super excited about that I decided to use some scrap Poplar that I had laying around because it's a lot harder of a wood than Pine and I'm hoping that it would withstand more of that drawer sagging and not really chip away and I'm leaving them a little proud so that way later on I can come in with a sander and really fine tune them to the exact size of the drawer guides so that way I don't have any issues with fitment [Music] so while those are sitting and drying I went to the store and I bought a piece of Walnut because I had a very great um idea that I got from Etsy and Pinterest for a leg design so I was going to just attach some legs to the bottom just to get this box off of the ground but I seen this really cool design that I think would work perfect to utilize those holes that were on the sides because they seem to be pretty uniform if not I can always drill new ones but it's basically going to be a leg that runs all the way down the side made of Walnut to match the veneer that's on the side and I think it is going to look amazing and it gives me an excuse to use my new tools again so right here you can see me cutting this a little Notch out I was going to go for a tapered look but I decided that from the pictures that I've seen online I really liked that rounded look better and I am tapering down the entire thing just a small tiny bit with this really cool design at the top it almost looks like um the top of like a high-rise building to me so I thought that was a pretty cool little thing about that as well so with my bandsaw I'll cut that tapered line just close enough to my pencil line so that I can come in with my drum sander and walk the wood straight up to that line so that way I can get a consistent result for all four of the legs and now that all the drawer guides are dry I'm taking my surf prep sander and I'm going to sand everything down flush so that it matches the guides perfectly thank you practicing how much I like the veneer over the plywood because it gives it a higher end look I decided to use wood filler to fill in all those cracks because I wanted to try my hand at installing veneer I've seen plenty of videos of people doing it themselves so I figured I'd give it a try so I went to a local wood shop that does sell this stuff by the roll this is a roll of Walnut in a two feet by eight feet in length which after doing all the measurements for this piece is actually spot on perfect as much as I need without making any mistakes it's got a very beautiful wood grain on it I didn't really want to try to match the existing veneer with um the one that I bought so I just decided to wrap the entire thing foreign so when installing veneer you want to make sure you cut a little bit over the edge so you have a little bit of excess room to work with and for this piece I didn't have a lot of room to spare so I really had to get that edge fairly close you just lay it down and you use a roller to really get good contact between the contact cement from the veneer to the wood surface that you're working on they suggested that I use this laminate trimmer opposed to using a router from which I've seen a lot of people use flush bit routers to walk the edge as close to the piece as possible but I didn't want to make any mistakes so I decided to just use the little hand trimmer and it worked out perfect gave me a really nice close Edge and all I had to do was finish it off by sanding it with 400 grit sandpaper attached to a sanding block after spending a lot of time focusing on the body of this thing I decided to grab those handles so that I can see if they were going to clean up enough to where I can reuse them because they did have holes in the drawer fronts that are pretty unique because it's a three screw setup and I couldn't find anything else online that would actually fit um the holes that were in the faces so I decided to just hopefully clean these up and Salvage them foreign [Music] now that all the wood putty is dry I sand everything down smooth and I use a rag to really clean the surface of this because you really want a nice clean surface so that this thing has a perfect surface to adhere to and like I did before steps are all the same you set it on with just a little overlapping Edge so that you can trim it off and I have to tell you I was super surprised that this stuff was so easy to put on it's almost like putting um like drawer liners inside of a drawer you just have to be a little more careful because you don't want to waste this stuff or go too close to the edge and then end up ripping it out while I was trimming this up I can tell that I didn't like the way that that exposed front looked compared to the nice new Walnut veneer that I just put on so later on I am going to be using some Edge banding of some sort and walnut to clean that up and this stuff is not in a finished state it is pretty smooth already but you can feel all the grain so I'm using a 220 grit piece of sandpaper to smooth all of that out and give it a really nice smooth feel and then I move on to the drawer front that was missing the actual face of the drawer I just used some glue and a pin nailer to secure this thing down and I know you it looks kind of like my hand is on top of where I'm nailing but my hand is out of the way and safe and I decided to use a Danish oil to finish these drawer fronts because I didn't want to use polyurethane because I wanted to try to bring out some of that natural Pine color just to give it some contrast against that Walnut oh so since I added that new veneer it does cover up those screw holes so all I had to do was get a small drill bit and just drill those holes out so that way I can line up my leg with it and I could get a perfect fitment and drill those holes out for the legs so that I can install them [Music] foreign [Music] accumulating some of these but some longer clamps if I had longer clamps to kind of clamp that leg down to hold it it would have made this process a lot easier because I'm having to sit there and try to hold this thing while simultaneously drilling a pilot hole to accept the screw and then obviously once I get that first screw in everything else goes in pretty smoothly but like I said longer clamps are definitely going to be in my Shop's future rather than using the Walnut Edge banding that I had bought for this piece I had some leftover Walnut from the legs so I decided to just make some nice sturdier more high-end strips for the faces and I think it's going to look a lot better than just a standard Edge banding plus I don't have to strip it or use an iron to adhere it because I can just use glue and my pin nailer foreign so a little trick that I learned from some other Woodworkers that I follow on YouTube is that you can use a little bit of glue inside of your little pinholes and cracks and then from sanding it all of that dust from the Walnut will actually fill it in for you and it masks it pretty well [Music] so this entire piece was pretty much raw wood and it was very very dried out so I'm using Howard's feed and wax to just condition all of the wood and as you can tell it is very very thirsty I needed to saturate this stuff I actually did two separate coats of this stuff just so I can really really get that wood conditioned and the inside as well because I want it to just cover every inch of this thing and really really take my time with all of the details foreign so staining this thing was one of the steps that I could not wait to get to because I wanted to see what this Walnut was actually going to look like I was going to use like a Danish oil on it but I really wanted to stain it because I was looking for more of a reddish tint to the Walnut so I'm using a color by verithane it's called Carrington it has a brown with red undertones and I think that it is perfect for Walnut veneer so while I let that stain dry I decided to move on to the drawer handles once again and I'm using Bar Keeper's Friend in a liquid version and this stuff works really well I mean this tarnish came off so fast it was ridiculous um it's not a brass color it's almost more of a copper color but I really really like the way that it looks compared to what it looked like before so I decided to keep these and just take some of the bends out of them there was one of them that was in really rough shape but this stuff bends pretty easy and cleans up very very well I decided that would be a good idea to replace all the screws with some new brass screws because the old ones were either stripped out or they had paint kicked in them and I was not willing to spend the time to pick all of the paint out of those screws just to make them work these things are fairly cheap couple dollars per pack probably spent about maybe 20 to maybe 30 dollars total on all the screws which was well worth it to me because it looks really really good so because this piece is going in my garage and I'm going to be using it for storage of different bits and pieces sandpaper and whatnot I decided to give it three coats of polyurethane and a satin finish just so that I can have it nice and durable because I'm pretty rough on my stuff and I don't want it to get too beat up because I'm putting all this time and money into it so that's just going to give me the best bang for my buck and here I'm installing the drawer guides that keep the drawers from actually falling down and those are the new brass screws that I'm installing and they look absolutely gorgeous now that we are in the final steps of putting this project back together I just have to put the drawer separators back in and then we can go in and take a look at how this project came out and I am super happy foreign so I don't know about you but I am super shocked that this little box that I picked up on the side of the road ended up being this beautiful gorgeous cabinet that is going to sit in my shop that is a personal project for me this is actually the first project that I'm keeping for myself out of all the pieces that I've ever done let me know if this is some content that you guys want to see more of I typically do more flips to make profit but I really had a lot of fun with this piece and it turned out absolutely gorgeous so let me know if you want to see more foreign
