I want to talk to you about a tool that I came across a short while ago I've actually known about it for about five years when a guitar maker said he uses this shinto sword rasp to refine the necks and make the necks of his guitars and I didn't dismiss it I just never needed one and then a few months ago I started working with more shaping and I wanted to try this one out because several people said why don't you try the shinto thing so I did I bought one and what I have is I was amazed really at how functional it was it's got big teeth on one side and small teeth on the other side so and it's joined together it's got this diamond striation in there that the diamond pattern and then it's riveted together with long rivets that pass all the way through and it's really robust it looks very utilitarian it's not a pretty looking piece of equipment but it works very very nicely it's got a decent handle on it it's got a good firm grip when you're using it so I want to just walk you through a few small details that I've found it very useful for I'm making a cutting board here if I take the coarse side on here you'll hear how aggressive it is listen but look how much stock it removes it just takes it right down very quickly so if I want a radius on this end I've got my 45 drop my hand and I'm actually going very lightly I'm actually holding this back from from penetrating too aggressively up onto the end grain and I've actually got a very nice shape on there so I turn over so I've gone from the coarse side to the fine side and I just refine that a little bit like that and that actually if I went with some paper on a stick like this that would that would refine it in a heartbeat I generally might go for a file just to find flat file to refine it and this is now shining back at me it's got a very smooth surface on it so that's what I've been using this for for of what that and a variety of other things this is the end grain and this is rough sawn off the buns so if I took the course side of this and elongated along its long axis like this I can actually use it in similar fashion to a file but it works to effectively produce what a plane would produce it's not super smooth and I'm on the course side what I find is I have to actually hold it back from penetrating too deeply I'd switch over to the fine side and refine that shape and I'm amazed at how effective that is let me lift it up here and show you what I would do I'll do it on your side this is my coarse side I want to take this off and I want to make it a half round across the end of this cutting board so I take my rasp but 45 degrees in both directions and portion all the way through and surprisingly it's taking off an even parallel 45 degree angle now I'm lightening up on my so I'm refining it just by lightening up then I drop my hand and come in on that hard corner go a little bit lower watch what happens now I'll lift up lifting lifting lifting lifting over onto the top corner here hard corner and I've got my round over done and it's really very neat it's not ugly at all I've switched my file at my rasp over to the offers it side to smoother so this is the finer teeth working now [Music] I'm ready for some paper now now if I take this to minimize the use of some paper if I take that smooth side now and use it with my hands this way instead of on the handle and I refine the strokes I'm using the length of the rasp to straighten out the board the corner and I've got this lovely round over on there it's very nice what happens on long grain it's just the same there's very little difference here coarse side I'm going quite lightly to start with so I get my saw Russ oriented to optimise the cut switchover back to the course the nice thing about this is it works for left-handed and right-handed people equally whereas a rasp you have to have you have to have them handed according to your dominant hand with this it works well for both people of all types so I've got my course I've got my finder if this grain is rising up here I'm going against the grain so I'm turning around and I just work that grain I can hear the difference I can feel the difference now what do you do on the corners here I've got round on here round on here it's just the same just go with the fine side this time and knock off the corner forty-five and then work it into the other adjacent faces and then round it it's amazing how well this tool works so I've got I've got this yeah I've used the coarse side I've used the fine side I've got my corners done I'm ready for some fine sandpaper now so that's the Shinto rasp do I recommend it I absolutely do it's an amazing tool I think you'll enjoy owning one whether it replaces my high-end rasp not really but it's very close so it's a great tool for anybody to have if you're making spoons guitars if you're just shaping a cutting board anything like that it's a good tool to have in your compendium of tools [Music] you
