welcome to the Shell Technology Center Hamburg this is a place where new lubricants for Exel gearboxes and Transmissions are born today we taking you on a brief tour to show you the places where these lubricants are formulated and Blended and also the places where the performance is evaluated and demonstrated just follow us Welcome to our blending plant this blending plant is where lubricant such as Shell Helix rimula and spyx start their life these lubricants are a blend of Base oils with an additive package Bas oils can be derived from either simple mineral oils or synthetic oils which are intended for higher performance applications Basils essentially are hydrocarbons of different viscosities and they are selected to give a finished lubricant which has the right properties for the intended application the additive package which is unique to each product is designed to give the lubricant extended life help control friction and minimize wear typical additive treat rates can range from 1% for industrial lubricant up to 20% for automotive applications precise amounts of Base oil and additive are Blended together to give a lubricant according to the design specified by shell product formulators once all the components are Blended together a number of quality checks are carried out to ensure the final Blend is correct and the lubricant is then ready for evaluation following testing in our main laboratory we then evaluate canidate oils in this purpose built demonstration laboratory using these pet gearboxes we've evaluated in great detail various Blends and how they warm up and how this affects their viscosity so we can identify which formulations give the greatest benefits we've observed again with the perspect gearboxes that lubricants which have lower temperature rises tend to give lower friction losses and so give higher gearbox efficiencies the benefits of such oils are that they will give reduced vehicle fuel consumption and so reduce operating cost for customers durability tests are used to ensure our oils minimize component wear during use in addition specialized friction tests are used to ensure our oils give smooth gear changes these are just two examples of the type of tests we use to ensure the high performance level of shell spyx Drive Line lubricants sitting have a new test yeah this one looks like it's a good one yeah looks promising Welcome to our Drive Line Test Facilities this is a place where the final stage of each new product development is happening and we are testing the lubricant in real Hardware so let's get inside and take a closer look at our heavy duty drive line test Rak this heavy duty Drive Line rig enables us to measure Exel and gearboxes and tund them with the engine we are using industry standard test cycles and the operating temperature and the efficiency of the lubricant are measured we can measure differences for lubricants formulated from simple mineral base oils compared to those formulated for higher performance synthetic base oils and we can also measure differences for transmission lubricants formulated for different viscosity grades [Music]
