we're joined by fs1 NFL analyst Ray Lewis talking about grave Shannon let me start with you to have a problem with Adams response no I do not have a problem with a problem with the response because if they'd asked me there's 15 years ago I would say the exact same thing I realized that I play an inherently dangerous game and although I did not know all the facts that they know currently giving the same sort of circumstances what I know now I still would have made that decision for me we see this happens every day that people that don't play football skill we just saw a situation in San Antonio where an undocumented workers were locked in a non ventilator storage container trying to get to America to make a better life for themselves and their kids and they asked one of the subs one of the survivors they said I knew the risk when I got in this vehicle yeah you know the risk now are you willing to risk risk that for a long-term a reward for you and your family I would skip and for me perfectly me all things being equal I really ain't trying to die anytime soon because the end result with you down the football feel you down the bed the hospital at the end of the day the results are the same but skip we see people all this all the time if I want if I gotta go I want to go on my cell book sailboat on the ocean well we see people have the ashes spread about sea or at Apollo Stadium if I have no problem with what the young man said because you know what happened with me scared my grandmother passed in 2011 in July and the last three year that's been a many a Friday and Saturday and Sunday with my grandmother in that nursing home and a lot of people in there never play football and had those same debilitating they do neurological and brain diseases so if the darkness can tell me 100 percent for certain Shannon had you not play football there is a 0% chance there's a 100% chance you would never ever had these debilitating brain and neurological diseases now you give me something to think about but because I there's a chance I could have had these diseases anyway no I'm gonna play football and I know so what and I just I also want I don't want anybody after the thing well you said you're trying to minimize like blacks can't be smart no God blessed me with far more athletic ability than he did book sense and I use what God gave me to get out of a situation legally am i I'm not magna laude smart I'm thank you Laurie smart but I'm okay what I I disagree with that what you're smarter than you give yourself credit well you don't think your book smarter than you give yourself credit for and I'm gonna call you skip I could have got a lot better but I was I was mainly focused because I wanted to I just felt that I could do more for my grandmother with my athletic ability than my brains so I have no problem but don't discount the brain I have no problem with Jamal Adam say it because if you to ask me this 10 15 years ago skip I would have said the exact same thing okay I think I definitely agree for a number of reasons right so what the thought process of I would die for this opportunity what he's talking about the sacrifices that we go through day in and day out and the rigorous workouts and the childhood coming up and just just finding a way do not have an away not being able to eat all the time some of the some of the situations all of these things he's talking about that's what the pile of things he's talking about that nobody knows what the real sacrifice really is so when he says that I've said that myself many times like I will die doing this right because the ultimate for me just like you was how can I make my mother smile like how can I get my mother out of this situation that she's in and and and everybody's gonna go into job that there's risk from every level no matter what job yeah firemen whoever whoever it believes but yeah it's gonna it's gonna be something and so when you ask yourself why would he say that I don't you I would say it because he's that passengered about it like he really believes it and he loves this game and and and if you take the TVs away and you put all of us on one football field we will play it until the Sun comes up and the design goes down it's true and and that sister the fact of it is now since there's so much information out here now of course we have to do more studying both the league and the players right how to keep how to continue to be safer in this game right how did not take the hits and you know and just let them just keep bothering you and I think there's so many alternative medicines now I alternate of doctors that you still have to do a lot of checkups yeah so everything both of you just said it's why too often I'm a little too callous to this a little too insensitive and I don't have enough sympathy for CTE victims or players who say do you know what what I gave up I can't walk or I can't sleep or whatever the issues are and I I've been doing this for so long I've known so many players even older than you two we're really good in their time and they would have done it again man they loved it and they miss it dearly to this day and some of them in their 70s and if you told them at age 72 you could I got something I can give you that will let you play football again you don't think they'd go play football again yeah they would so in the big picture everybody knows you you knew the risk from high school wasn't was high school football not violent for both of you oh yeah come on very let maybe like crazy violent Lahoma dream yeah and the bully in the ring and that's at practice every day every day every day every day and it wasn't reffed as well the pads and the helmets weren't high quality so you don't think you had concussions in high school yeah don't love you I know you were running back right yeah yeah you run into still my job not only was I trying to see stars I wanted to make somebody else e star because did I oh I got it boy oh I feel your start I don't know he feel you know we used to have I used to have dark helmets and on the dark helmet how hard you hit people yeah your marks on the helmet meant how really how good you really was said that the I walk I wanted a white helmet because I wanted a blue mark that rare Barnum yelling on my helmet peel my DK I got eye I despise sort of war analogies here about football but I got to give one thing this is what I've always thought about playing especially at the NFL level especially on defense not so much on offense because you or your job is to run in gentlemen who have the football under their arm but the Marines were always taught going into battle that you quote unquote have to give yourself up for dead psychologically because you'll have a better chance of surviving if you just go in with the attitude I'm not gonna make it I'm gonna get hurt I'm gonna get shot at so I give myself up I'm just going to go fight this fight as hard as I can fight it because I'm virtually dead already so I'm okay right well I think some of that mentality has to operate going into an NFL game especially for a defensive blown listen absolutely and for a number of reasons there's one thing you can't do and we always say this don't ever tease nobody about the injury because if they have an g because it's it goes around and so the last thing you want to think about it man I'm gonna get hurt you know no they're absolutely not and that's the first thing that you have to take out of your mind it's funny you bring up a military because there's a guy who's in the military he always wore my jersey up under his uniform right for this protection and and this and I've got many like just just thoughts about what it was like and then the first day he didn't he actually got shot right but it's the mindset you're talking about the only reason I tell you that story it's the mindset that you go in with that you try to do anything to take your mind away from thinking like that right and for me personally I've done a lot of different things to make sure my mind never wanders and and that's why you have to give so much cuz think about the military you already know at least there's a chance there's now with the way they're fighting you join the military there's a chance you're going to a war yeah Iraq Afghanistan in the middle somewhere you're going somewhere skill so but for me for Mary Porter and what she did for her dad and my mom's 3 ok Lee's just for balance Martellus Bennett was asked about this yesterday and he said and I quote I ain't dying for this bleep great well okay but that's an offensive player a skill player not that you want but you were asked to block some so you're gonna be a more physical position right well the thing you skip when he says dying on the field there's not a been an instance where there's someone that had made a collision frame and they were instantly died now you remember I think his name was Thomas Harry on the San Francisco 49er in 2005 and the preseason game in Denver he collapsed of a heart attack and died so that was the closer that we've had Darryl Stingley got paralyzed by Jack Tatum into hitting the rate of against the UH Patriots a skill long-term effect we know there's a greater probability that we're gonna have these debilitating diseases but skill ain't trade my life I ain't read nothing [Music]
