Haley we are so excited to see you here in San Francisco I hope that you feel the same way I love San Francisco absolutely you are headlining Pride on Sunday that is a huge deal thank you I'm so excited to be here and to celebrate with everyone it's going to be a wonderful day look you have been involved and this has been a big year for you first of all congratulations on being a New York Times bestseller what thank you it's so wild I can't believe it's this is this is real life it's been a long journey um for girls like girls the novel The Way I novel I released so people who for people who aren't familiar girls like girls was your hit single a few years ago you had this great video and then you had an idea that you wanted to expand it Beyond just a song and so here you are with this book which is why a it involves high school students and from what I understand it is Loosely based on your own life in high school video and wrote the song for girls like girls and it was inspired by a young love that I had in in my adolescence and I wanted it to end in Hope and so I expanded it into a novel eight years later and it's finally out and now we are number one New York Times bestseller which is so wild and I'm so grateful for it because girls and girls was really um pivotal moment in my career my life where I would do something to express my true authentic self and be able to find a community of wonderful people that felt the way I felt and I was able to find my my voice and my purpose in in the music industry the story is a juicy one because from what I understand but please tell me how it really went you and your writing partner were just kind of like casually sitting around and you're like oh PS I'm gay you have to to sing about and I came out to her and it was a rainy day which in La which never happens for us and uh and so we wrote the song girls like girls and I never planned on releasing it and I last minute decided you know what I'm just going to release it and see what happens and so it's it's really wild what happens when you're able to be truthful to yourself and get to share that with the world you're able to find a community of people that feel um the way you do
