[Music] ladies and gentlemen let me introduce you to the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse now there's several different trims available however these two are probably the most important these are their Halo ones and the reason why is because over here we have the RS this is trimmed out specifically for more Street City Vibe and then over here well this is the Z71 and this one is a little bit more country this actually has the ability to do light off-roading all right so we're going to some mountain climbing and it's kind of cool because there's this dirt road that has some undulations and a few little Hills here and there and some little bounces and this is probably where you would max out certain all-wheel drive vehicles not just because of the terrain itself but because of rocks and other things that are around there that would make the tires really struggle because it really is about tires when you're doing this type of [Music] terrain this is still the C1 -2 platform so this is essentially the old platform that they've had before the differences are the powertrains and what actually drives these vehicles in terms of whether it has a single clutch or dual clutch all-wheel drive system not transmission all-wheel drive system we'll get to that in a second but there's an interesting thing here look at that long wheelbase it is pretty long it's about 100 just under 121 in hey but you know what else has 121 in wheelbase Chevy Tahoe now that is a vehicle that's about 6 in longer than this and it is higher partially because it's built on a frame this essentially is a car right but inside this has first of all best cargo space in its class it's 98 cubic feet of cargo space overall with all the seats folded down the Tahoe has a lot more it's like 115 or whatever but the point is is that for a lot of your regular commuting this might be a lot easier to drive and less expensive at the end of this video we will talk about pricing I do like the camera setup but the best part to me is the way that transfers torque it's almost seamless I've struggled to make the tires slip and I've deliberately been pushing this thing in some weird places and this setup where it's able to send so much torque to the rear and then split that side by side you really feel it when you're going up a hill and you just know that one tire is slipped but then it catches itself and you don't even know you don't even know it's just from a little bit of experience and seat of the pants where I can go oh okay that's what it was doing it was just about to lose a little bit of traction but it didn't so yeah this is a really good all-wheel drive system kudos to shev lay for that now off-road or not even Offroad on dirt roads this vehicle is actually very composed it has no real problems getting around obstacles um but more importantly when you um need a little traction it does it which is the whole off-road part and at the same time and this is probably the best part it gives you a decent ride and we are talking about four-wheel independent suspensions not like it has a solid rear axle or anything like that but we also are talking about a slight lift because the suspension system in this vehicle is slightly different than the RS given the fact that they've had to beef a few things up there are heavier Duty components but in addition spring rates are different the way they actually set up the struts a little bit different so a lot of the components are the same as the regular vehicle and the RS yet there are a couple things that have changed as such it gives it frankly I think a better ride now let's quickly talk about the obvious differences between the Z71 that's this one and the RS it's that white one Z71 has 18in wheels with goody your Wrangler mud and snow tires they are more aggressive than your average tire but they're really not that aggressive they're Better Built for mediocre terrain I'll say uh we've already had an opportunity to take these Offroad and bounce around with them so you'll see footage of that but most importantly these things work well on the road as well they're they're they're like um not too loud now let's move over to the RS 22in Wheels yo 22 in so there's a lot more mass in these things cuz that's all steel that you're spinning around there and then of course you've got Continental Tires on these uh not exactly alterrain the difference here of course is the fact that these are a heavier but also the contact patch that's going onto the highway is a little bit more aggressive for Highway and we've driven one of these on some back roads and some Highway and the ride difference between them isn't that much different which surprised me I expected a little bit more but the Z71 has a little bit more squish to it and that makes makes some sense because it has a more off-road friendly setup different spring rates and it has more sidewall going into those tires now another big difference between the two of them is the front end check this out oh red dough hooks that's Offroad actually this thing has a skid plate too underneath which is great not this painted piece but it's well under there but if you look you're going to see that it's approach angle well it's far different than the RS the RS really shouldn't be off Highway too much because yeah you see that lower chin spoiler and that whole section down here very different from the [Music] Z71 17.7 in screen this thing is huge this is your volume control knob but you may notice there's no tuner knob yeah bummer okay so the way this screen works is relatively simple however it takes a little time to figure everything out at least for me old man small brain couple things here that some of you guys might actually use Alexa uh Wi-Fi hotspot Google assistant I've asked her some terrible things and she hasn't responded I don't understand why why um phone and then controls and all that other stuff now with the addition of these controls here you can still work the heating and air conditioning system on the screen but you have the backup down here of actual physical buttons um I like the fact that they do that I almost think it's unnecessary because you have these physical buttons but I guess having a backup is a good thing right now yes you have a lot of controls here by the way on the steering wheel that is including pedal controls for the transmission aren't they cute I guess if you don't want to use Hill descent control in something that's kind of off-road is like this and this does have Hill descent control you could go into a lower gear and go down the hill in first gear but here's the deal that's the only way you can do it because look here this is the gear leave that all right so neutral is that way that is drive and that is reverse you can see by the way good cameras there loving the cameras um the thing is this doesn't let you go into any other gears so I'm going to put it to park it's a little button right here so very Mercedes like in this respect but then if you're driving along and you're like I really want to be in third gear for some reason maybe you're towing I don't know you have to use the paddle shifters is the only way it works once you hit Red Line these things do not respond happily I believe they will force you to change gear they don't want to over tax the [Music] engine let's talk about super Cruise because that's really one of the main reasons we're doing this drive in the RS the RS is mechanically different a little tiny bit than it's brother the Z71 which we've taken off-road but in terms of their driving Dynamics and super Cruise they're similar so super Cru standard on the RS but optional on the LT and Z71 so how does Super Cruise work well there's a variety of things that are going on it has actual Maps hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles of Highway that are actually in the system and when you are on the correct path and you activate super Cruise it'll allow you to do handsfree foot free driving basically all right so let's try it on this road I don't know if it's going to activate on this highway I think you have to be on a slightly larger highway but we're going to find out yeah this this this is really pretty here by the way we're just outside of Georgia no we're not outside of Georgia we're in Georgia Nathan God I'm so tired okay so I'm going to turn on on cruise control and then I'm going to hit the super Cruise ah see that says super Cruise unavailable no Road information that straight out means that it doesn't have the information in its system on the course that we're on right now however we will be in a spot in just a momentto that will allow us to use super Cruise okay attempting yet again super Cruise in three 2 1 aha woohoo okay so you see everything lit up the steering wheel has a green bar going through it it would flash red if if things were no bueno but right now green and we're going through corners I shall remove my hands in a moment let's see how it does I'm a little nervous okay here we go I'm not touching anything super Cru has been engaged understand that I tried to activate this thing seriously like times um but it's not the fault of the system it's the fault of the people who organized this and didn't have enough highways see the highways are part of the system they are actually in the super Cruise system they pre-ap these things to let super crws know which highways are usable and which ones are not and there's hundreds of thousands of miles of Highway that are in in this system all right it's correcting that's good cuz there's a semi coming the opposite way I am ready to grab the steering wheel but everything is cool so so far everything is hunky dory um I've used this system before in pickup trucks it's actually my first time in a non- catalac vehicle that I've used super cruise and yeah so far so good but we are going to be doing some Corners coming up and I want to see if this thing will actually do that without us flying off the road and becoming a barreling tube of death okay so here we go minor Corner Str better than me which doesn't say much by the way if this thing has Lan departure control I can't seem to find it I think you might have to go into this system here to do it and so while we're doing this while we're waiting for this corner this is the part that's scary oh it's accelerating it's doing it it's doing a really good job such a good super cruise actually this thing is working really well okay so here's some complaints while I'm complimenting super Cruise uh mirrors way too small for a vehicle to size these mirrors are perfectly fine on a Chevrolet Spark uh or sonic I know they're discontinued or other small vehicle that you can imagine that's still being built there too small for a large SUV crossover first thing second thing is the location of the drive modes which by the way this one does have an off-road mode and has a sport mode which it's in right now but it doesn't really have you know the full-blown off-road modes that you would have on a c71 which makes perfect sense what doesn't make sense is the fact that it's located here and you really have to take your eyes off the road in order to make sure that it's actuated properly I don't like that it should be over here somewhere it's that's another issue and then there's all the other things that you have to go into the interface to function like oh I don't know if you want to shut the lights off or turn the lights on instead of the having them work automatically I don't understand why that even exists so those are those are some issues I really wish General motives would think about because it does make it difficult for people like me who have a very small brain to actually make this thing work the way I want it to work but that aside even though this has ridiculously large 22in Wheels the ride is compliant handling is good I would say that it's probably not happy about the fact that it has all that extra mass of this wheel I mean that is an alloy right and so if they were smaller tires and wheels that were lighter it' probably be better for this um but it's all about the looks it there's no other reason to have 22in wheels unless you have like a covered wagon at this point all right what you're looking at here is a 328 horsepower 2.5 L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine puts out 326 lb Fe of torque those numbers yes not 200 300 328 horsepower coming out of a 2.5 L 4- cylinder engine now turbocharger is actually stuck a little bit down there and it's a twin scroll turbocharger so they're taking some of their design cues from BMW who's been doing that for a while and power comes on pretty Lively around 2,000 RPM now this vehicle as it sits can get around 25 MPG on the highway if you get the front wheel drive version of this which means you have to look at a base model right then you're getting up to 27 MPG on the highway combined you get 20 MPG with the all-wheel drive and I believe 21 MPG combined with the front-wheel drive they have an 8-speed automatic transmission not a 9 speed uh long story behind that condensed is that it's essentially the same transmission the two of them obviously except for one speed but what the reason was they wanted to make sure that they had uh the proper gearing for the amount of torque that these produced this is an allnew engine even though it has components that are related to the 2.7 L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that they have in some of their other vehicles this one has a couple other things going on with it which we will discuss in just a momentto however I can say this that in its class other than getting up to a V6 like say Ford with uh their Explorer which has an Eco between turbocharged V6 all of the four Cinders that this competes against this tends to be on the higher end and thus one of the more powerful powert trains out there in this class now this is not a hybrid but there is a little device that's elect that actually helps with power and with MPG and it's called an ease system electric phaser and essentially it sits on the outside of the cam it's a little electric motor and it spins and it can actually change the phase of the cam so if you need better fuel mileage it spins one particular way if you need more power it spins a different way and it sits there with the cam and makes it happen yes [Music] let's talk about pricing I'm a little confused because at this event they've actually been telling me slightly different pricing than what I'm seeing here on the website for Chevrolet so according to this the LS which is the base model this is by the way all-wheel drive that LS you can have eight passenger seatings so no Captain's chairs $4,995 now if you got the LT which is nice ER but then you're now at Captain's chairs so seven seating all-wheel drive version of that that one starts at $3,395 once again according to the website then there's the Z71 that's this one here I'm leaning on base MSRP is $ 47,7 and then the RS and I hope you're sitting down $ 57,58 now cameraman Cole and I who's behind the camera there both sped out our coffee in the morning when we realized how much more expensive the RS is now granted there is a lot of kit that you get on the RS and you get those monstrous wheels and you get the grill and stuff like that but honestly the price disparity between the two makes very little sense to us so curious to your perspective anyway the good news is is that both vehicles do show that they are far better drivers than the vehicles they replace the V6 engines that were in here some people say they were Troublesome some people say that they just didn't have enough power well both of those things may have been solved with this much more powerful powertrain and it is more efficient so with all that being said they drive great on light off-road the Z71 did very well traction system is outstanding on the back Country Roads the RS handled great are they Best in Class M are they good yes are they worth the money only time will tell but once we get these vehicles over to the tfl studio we'll have a better chance to drive them in the environment we're familiar with thanks for joining me this is Nathan I'll catch you next time
