foreign [Applause] welcome to ESPN college football presented by cars.com here at Husky Stadium it's the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Washington Huskies hi everybody Ron Frank come along with that Cunningham and uh Jacka root out on the sideline will be getting to Jack shortly Ohio State normally we start talking about A team's team's offense first it's not going to be the case this week because where the Buckeyes are getting their most solid play and they want to get that offense to move along and do it slowly let's talk about their defense and it has been dynamites number one in the country they haven't quite played a team like Washington yet but they lost nine guys off of last year's defense a lot of them first team all Big Ten guys so they're going to have to rely on the few veterans they have Golston the defensive end talked about how last year against Florida he watched their defensive ends and learned some new moves we'll see if we can employ those today but the guy that they all rally around James laurenitis now Laura Knight has won the big award last year the nagursky award is the best player in college football and the coaches said maybe that was a little early he went back to work he was named a captain as a junior the first time that that's ever happened under Jim dresslin 22 years head coach so he's a natural leader if you have not seen this year's edition of the Washington Huskies remember this name Jake Locker he is already a folk hero in this part of the world and he's only a red shirt freshman third start Ron and they're already anointing him as a savior of this program but when you talk to the coaches he's got a great arm he needs to work on his accuracy a little bit but he can beat you with his feet he's one of the fastest guys on the team thing that it was amazing Rod when we met with the coaches yesterday I asked Tyrone Willingham when did your team Stop Believing they could win and start expecting they can win he said was right when we named Jake Locker the starter last spring we're getting very close to kickoff when we return we'll hear from the third man on our crew jackaroo right after this [Applause] ESPN's college football brought to you by Just For Men hair color stay in the game with Just For Men hair color Pizza Hut the dip and strip Pizza get America's favorite pizza Pizza Hut and John Hancock the future is yours part of the capacity crowd here at Husky Stadium absolutely one of the most gorgeous scenes as far as an on-campus Stadium built to capacity Ohio State won the toss they elected to receive and this is Russell on the return and he is going to take it out across the 25-yard line let's check with the third man on our broadcast team let's go to the sideline and here's jackaroo Jack thanks Ron you know normally in September you don't get electricity but that's not the case with this matchup it's like a mini Rose Bowl in fact the year at the Husky Stadium it's filled with a sea of purple but there's one difference guys the Ohio State Buckeyes have snapped up more than their allocated ticket I haven't felt like this in September in a dog's age all right jack first play from scrimmage from the 27-yard line out with a gain of almost 10 yards in the play is Beanie Wells and now let's take a listen to Butch Reynolds Gold Medal winner and the starting lineups for the Buckeyes from the Ohio State University football team at quarterback Junior Todd Beckman probably be making his third career start you hand a bottle with the Chris Benny Wells Chris Benny Wells 235 6-2 he will run around you or run over you blocker portal is to a front it's six foot six Kirk Barton Kirk Barton is our big eater all right well on Two Carries they have kept it on the ground there is nothing fancy about what Ohio state is trying to do and they have already moved the sticks and they're at the 49-yard line and after taking a look at that offensive line first couple of ball games they were exactly playing together they have a lot of big physical guys but the one thing that Jim Bowman who doubles is the offensive line coaching offensive coordinators we're trying to do is get them to play together they look really good in the first two plays foreign straight ahead and this will go for a couple of yards and let's take a look at the Husky starting lineup here's former All Pro quarterback Warren Moon the starting defense for the University of Washington up front on the defensive line they're led by Sac artists Grayson gunhein and the linebacker Corps a frisky Bunch led by Dan Howe and those pesky guys in the secondary they're led by pac-10 player of the week last week Roy Lewis no dogs 9-1 thanks so much on second down first pass of the afternoon got a man down there in the pass incomplete and we got a flag Hardline is the intended receiver on the play there was a collision at the 12-yard line and that's where the marker was thrown I believe Forrester is the man who collided with him I'd like to call Early Ron they were pounding them so well with the running game and uh ran Forester ran into him he should have he never turned around and found the ball the ball was under thrown by Beckman if he would have found the ball I think he would have run into part line but Hartline got behind him and that's JD Williams the defensive back coach saying listen just find the ball you were in position to make a play maybe even an interception instead of a pi well checking into the lineup number 42 for Ohio State is tank Whaley a fifth year senior he also was the backup center first down following the penalty ball rest at the 33-yard line straight ahead again and Wells loses his footing and is going to go down after a gain of three let's go back down to jackaroo Jack oh yeah you're talking about my favorite position center Tyler Whaley has AKA tank Whaley played six games yet last year Ron as a center he decided in the off season to try his hand at fullback in the media guys they list him at 6-1 let me put anything this way if he's 6-1 I'm a basketball player at about seven foot that's Whaley in motion back to the sideline pass on the way well over throne heart line the intended receiver but the Beckman was a little pumped up on that throw right there you know after visiting with the Ohio State coaches yesterday you got the feeling that they haven't quite figured out what beckman's strengths are if you go back to the last couple of years Beckman was third and fourth string Justin zwick Troy Smith he never even was second string so I think this coaching staff still trying to figure this young man out well it's third down and the nickel defense on the field for the Washington Huskies Ohio State needs to take it to the 23-yard line Blitz coming off the corner tries to step up nice job of picking up the blitz but he'll be well short of the first down at the 27-yard line you know Kent bear the defensive coordinator for Washington they've been playing a lot of Zone coverage they've got some young guys in the back end vonzel McDowell a true freshman that time he goes man and brings pressure you always know as an offense you're in the quote-unquote red zone is because of the Blitz Ryan pretorius the junior out of Durban South Africa will attempt a 44-yard field goal near hashmark got the distance but does not have the accuracy wide left no good let's take another look at the kick well Victorious is kicking a little draw here Ron and he didn't start it out on the right upright sorry about the middle and just continued to draw across and an offensive drive that's better than the first two ball games against Youngstown State and Akron they actually move the ball running that's something that Jim Trestle knows they're going to rely on as they go on but that came away with no points Jake Locker on the field and he will drop back on a shotgun which they will do probably about 95 percent of the time but they came directly from the sideline and got over the football patch got it complete at the 33-yard line and here's Warren Moon with the offensive starters the starting lineups for the University of Washington offense led by the most exciting redshirt freshman quarterback in the country Jake Locker and he'll be handed off to the silky smooth Louis Rankin the guy who's going to be leading the big dogs up front fifth year senior Juan Garcia go dogs thanks so much for your help today to introduce your former teammates second down and short and they go with the running play right up the middle that's Homer and take a look at the wait a minute we're still fighting over the football here in fact players still pushing and shoving and as they shorted out let's say here from Gold Medal winner Butch Reynolds and the defensive starters for the Buckeyes the defense University football team up front you visit the end Vernon Goldston running has arms as big as my legs with the linebacker Court James little animal Laurinaitis he will hit you in the defensive backfield Junior Malcolm Jenkins look out because Malcolm has speed and he can cover the whole field that was a first down by Washington their initial first down of the afternoon quick Out Pass near sideline that's ranking and the running back who had cut out of the backfield is going to be gang tackled right in front of the Ohio State bench leading the attack laurenitis was the first man to get out there and make the hit well that's the one thing that Laura Knight has worked on a lot this off season you know everyone's going to keep Ohio State linebackers for the next few years and they're going to compare him to AJ Hawk who just had dazzling speed and such great instincts and that's the one thing that laurenitis worked on was his speed getting his stride a little bit longer Manila run inside out this this team has great speed on defense and it starts with those linebackers [Applause] Rankin out of the backfield in motion they go empty and here's our first quarterback run of the afternoon and Jake Locker close to a first down at the 47-yard line tackled by Kurt Coleman the interesting thing when you've got a shotgun situation that is an option offense you got to defend all 11 people when you got a quarterback this mobile and that's what you saw with Urban Meyer at Utah Bowling Green now Florida West Virginia with Rich Rodriguez you find guys like this and an extra Man in the Box it negates the defense trying to get that extra guy down there Paul Homer is the lone setback and it's going to be a quarterback keeper and Jake Locker will pick up the first down he'll take it to the 49-yard line of Washington Marcus Freeman and Malcolm Jenkins combining for the Stop Jenkins said to be probably one of the top cover Corners in the country watch the fullback block of Paul Homer I mean John absolutely buries Doug Worthington who had come off of his block and the kids are rallying around Jake Locker the coaches talk about how much harder they're playing because they know this guy can get it done [Applause] Ohio State showing Blitz from those middle linebackers Washington takes it straight ahead and let's check in back of the studio with Reese Davis Rhys Ron in the swamp Tennessee and Florida underway and Brandon James of the Gators punt returner extraordinaire who is suspended for the season opener and now Brandon James making his presence felt as Tennessee dared to point to him 83 yards a diminutive Speedster will house it Lamarcus Coker had a great kickoff return for Tennessee now the volunteers are threatening to tie the game okay Reese well what a downer after you've worked all week long and it is the special teams that gets you in trouble as that pass is thrown complete to Homer the fullback and he'll be tackled at the line of scrimmage and it was Malcolm Jenkins who was coming on the blitz that really disrupted everything well right now Jim haycock the defensive coordinator is trying to bring pressure to the left side of Jake Locker remember the film we watched against Boise State Ron it seemed that Locker like to go to the left on his run so right now Jim haycock's bringing somebody and saying let's get this ball out of his hands eighth play of the drive for the Washington Huskies started back at their 20-yard line inside handoff big opening and that is going to be raking he is close to the first down let's see where they Mark him I believe he's gonna have it by a half yard as Worthington comes over to make the tackle it is a first down for the Huskies Lewis Rankin a senior who has tremendous upside great speed he's a long Strider but the one thing they've been working on with Rankin is just get in the hole get your shoulders down he's a powerful guy last week against Boise State tried to bounce it a few too many times that time got right in the hole pick up the first down that's a good run by the senior this week they talked a lot with him about patience and not trying to rush or Force the situation short drop passes thrown complete inside the 35-yard line that's dangles on the receiving end and jackaroo let's check back with you Ron this is not the type of drive that defensive pointer Jim haycock wanted to see early in this game remember we talked to him although he didn't want to admit that the key to his defense would be shutting down Jake Locker when he listed the top three it was pretty obvious he didn't have to be a Nobel Prize winner to figure it out limit the big place for some team in the turnovers and be physical thus far they haven't done any of that Jack a little bit of a down to play with here if you will second down in just over a yard for Washington blocker looking got a man over the middle and the tight end did not turn around Robert Lewis had he turned around he might have had a touchdown laying right in his hands yep and Dexter Larimore inside defensive tackle Jim haycock has a lot of guys he can rotate got some pressure but I really like the call by Tim lapano the offensive coordinator you set it down to play with yes and they went for it they ran the corner route with the tight end just a little bit of pressure Locker had to throw that ball before he wanted to Godly comes off the bench at tight end and he'll be replacing Robert Lewis 11th play of the drive and it started I said the 20 actually the 27 because of the missed field goal we are scoreless if we have 6-14 to play opening quarter it's complete but a great job defensively as soon as Russo caught the football he was tackled by Anderson Russell [Applause] well so far everything Washington has tried on the edges is not really working the speed of Ohio State and the safeties and of course Donald Washington the corner Russell the safety and so right now Washington trying to get on the edge is just not working against the speed of Ohio State well lateral movement like that against a speedy defense you can get burned just like they just did and I have a feeling that the offensive staff might be wishing they had that play to call over again as the puck goes five yards deep into the end zone so we'll take a timeout 5 23 remaining opening quarter 37-yard five no score thank you this telecast is available on ESPN HD presented by Pioneer Kuro HD TV welds by the way four carries 27 yards on the opening drive and then seven yards a pop I'm not sure I'd stop giving it to him until Washington just says we're going to put a stop on good defensive line for Washington has not held their gaps there's been some really nice holes in there I agree go right back to it head of steam and this the best job that Washington has done in stopping him only a one-yard gain Reese Davis what do you got for us partner Ronnie got a Taco Bell Studio update and takes you to Auburn Mississippi State up five inside a minute to go and Brandon Cox throws it to nobody in particular on Fourth and goal and Mississippi State beats Auburn in Jordan hair 19-14 Mississippi State Five Points over Auburn second down pass is caught and hit immediately Ray small on the receiving end of that one and defensively Washington was not only up to the task it's going to be a third down Buckeyes and they'll need about four and a half yards for the first and Roy Lewis is the young man that they've really had to rely on veteran over there as a senior good break on the ball and now because of that running game Ron you can't just play pass defense here Washington's going to have to keep eight in the Box I think Lewis wore the number one goal jersey at practice all this week he was the pac-10 defensive player of the week crowd comes to their feet pass got it complete for the first down at the 32-yard line that's heartblind the sophomore out of North Canton Ohio [Applause] a lot of youngsters for Ohio State in their defensive secondary and for Washington in their secondary and this is Nate Williams a true freshman on the coverage and that was an excellent route by Hartline he ran in towards Williams and then broke out found him in man-to-man underneath and that's a good read by Beckman tank Whaley continues to operate at fullback for the Buckeyes they'll go with the running play hit at the line of scrimmage maybe a gain of one Donald Butler is there defensively jackaroo well you notice maybe the defensive line are doing a little better job on this series in terms of the rushing attack it may be on account of the fact that Randy Hart gathers them around and talked to them about Gap protection told them that they had to pick up their game just a little bit be a little bit more aware of the lanes they may leave open to this lethal running attack by the Buckeyes You Know Jack your point is so well taken because hey in the first two ball games they played worthy opponents but they didn't play Ohio State Focus has got to be a lot greater pass out in the flat has this one complete to the 40-yard line it was Trevor Robinson who had just come into the lineup Trevor at fullback a fifth year senior out of Richmond Virginia well Jim Bowman the offensive coordinator for Ohio State of course he's assisted upstairs by Joe Daniels who's the past game coordinator they admitted that they didn't hadn't shown a lot of offense in the first two games against Akron and Youngstown State and now they're at that place getting towards the Big Ten in a little hurry up here Ohio State hurries back to the line of scrimmage they snap the ball hit behind the line of scrimmages Phoebe Wells and knocked down for a loss it'll be fourth down Ohio State and it's cut true number 20. senior out of Edmonds Washington with the play and the strength of this Washington defense there's no doubt about it is the linebackers true just here on the outside goes unblocked but that was actually a missed block the tight end there excuse me the wide receiver Brian rabisky at the end of the line of scrimmage he's got to get inside out on that you cannot let the outside linebacker Run free AJ trapasso comes in to kick it away first time at Ohio State has punted today and they run into the kicker and a flag comes out boy you come up with a good defensive stand and then you have a move like that and someone will be talked to on the far sideline with the special teams go back over there well Ohio state lines up with the three guys in front of the punter and it was Stevens well the Husky fans can do all they want but that's the right call Chris Stevens interesting knowing the near sideline capasso was uh laughing loudly with some of his teammates to pick up a first down that's right he could take it any way he can and this one right here could be very large 147 left to play in his opening quarter first quarter flying by because both teams running the football Washington utilizing short passes the same as running the football big opening has five has ten headed off at 15 and now 17 yards that's Beanie Wells showing why he is so respected by this coaching staff 24 yards in the play Washington got caught up a little bit there watch gundheim the defensive end as the ball is snapped he starts to back away he's kind of playing patty cake over there with the tight end and he just gave way too much ground and that was the cutback lane that opened up and Beanie Wells for 240 pounds showed that he has more than adequate speed as well this time he's going to be tripped up after a gain of a couple E.J Savannah one of the linebackers comes over to make the stop for the Huskies you know Beanie Wells one of the things puts a lot of pressure on himself and he's been pressing all the coaches say he's been pressing his mother Paulette has been asking hey Chris relax a little bit everything's going to be okay and you start to see when he does settle down and wait for his blockers he's a very explosive young man for how big he is on the shotgun near sideline almost intercepted in and out of the hands of Roy Lewis well that was a bad throw by Beckman and even though he's only making his third start a veteran Guy Roy Lewis read his eyes the whole way the ball was severely underthrown you've got to make plays Ohio state has struggled in their secondary they have no interceptions on the year with drops and this one needed to be picked off 10th play of the drive coming up started back at the 20-yard line no score 61 seconds left opening border Beckman glitches on pass clock right over the middle great pass and catch heart line on the receiving end and what a job by Beckman to deliver the football under heavy duress well Washington got down in a 46 front they bought Butler the middle linebacker in the Blitzer behind him and Beckman just continued to buy time and that's an excellent job by his receiver Hartline knowing exactly where the hole was running one-on-one against the Freshman Nate Williams you're right Hartline deserves equal amount of credit as does the quarterback Beckman straight ahead with the running play nothing this time euphoa is there to make the tackle Wilson a senior from Hawaii well now you get into the back and forth of Blake calling the last time that Ohio State got down into this area you got a uh Kent bear called a blitz so now the nickel comes in for Washington on this second and long and if you're Ohio State you may expect Blitz well that's going to be the last play of the opening quarter just before the team came toward the sideline Maurice Wells checked in and he's the speed guy at tailback so when we return we'll see if the Buckeyes can continue with this drive we have no score at the end of the opening 15 minutes [Applause] [Music] ESPN's college football is presented by cars.com find the right car for you cars.com and in part by Mitsubishi Motors driven to Thrill and Esurance get your fast free auto insurance quote at esurance.com today welcome back to Seattle Washington we talked about one of the most gorgeous places as far as an on-campus Stadium Lake Washington back off to our right I don't know how many Yachts are out there on the lake this afternoon but there are a number of them and the noise in this Stadium there's a panoramic view right there just absolutely beautiful second down for Ohio State they need to take it to the seven yard line to pick up the first great protection ball is tipped and is caught by Ohio State and that's heart line and so far he has been a real hero in this ball game that's great hustle and heartline who became a fan favorite yeah Hartline who became a fan favorite let's watch him look to me Ron like he may have been out of bounds before he came back in to get this ball he is yeah this is illegal touching and they've got a flag down on it if in college football if you're knocked out of bounds and then come back and establish you can make the play on the ball of your own volition you can't and he just was unaware that's a good call good good pickup by the official to notice that Hartline was not pushed out of bounds and couldn't be the first to make play on the ball Tyrone Willingham coming down and nodding to the official yes good call so it'll be third down what great Hustle by Heartland you can't fault him you cannot fall you know he just didn't know he'd stepped out but great hustle now you're in that for the Huskies they rushed three last time Ron they've got three up there now I think they may try to get some pressure on Beckman not let him set in there Maurice Wells and Beanie Wells in the backfield their head coach refers to them as the law firm of wells and Wells that's Maurice in motion quarterback keeper Beckman inside the 15. he'll take it down to around the 12. it'll be fourth down but they should be in great position to get a field goal and go on top in this ball game gunheim was there defensively I think that Jim Bowman and Jim Trestle and Joe Daniels the offensive Brain Trust for Ohio State pardon the pawn playing a little close to the vest and I don't blame them they're in a hostile Place do not get a turnover they came away with zero points last time I don't mind the conservative call there Victorious with a 28-yard field goal attempt and he's got it took his time on that one knocked it through and with 13 48 showing on the clock the Buckeyes draw First Blood three to nothing Ohio State on top so we're back and now here's today's Sonic scoring Drive 14 plays 69 yards using six minutes and 34 seconds and every drive has been a long drive for both teams in this game both teams found a little rhythm in their running game yes and and even their for Washington on their drive a lot of short passes that were complete so both offenses getting into a nice little rhythm you'd expect more than three total points so far well it's a spinner high and short taking up the 16-yard line that's Homer the fullback and Homer puts a head down and he'll take it out to the 32-yard line so let's take a timeout 13 minutes and 40 seconds left until halftime Buckeyes three to nothing welcome back to ESPN college football presented by cars.com Ron Franklin at Cunningham and jackaroo coming to you from a jam-packed Husky Stadium in Seattle Washington Buckeyes on top three to nothing this is only the second Drive of the ball game for Washington Blitz coming up the middle laurenitis is picked up pass is almost intercepted Malcolm Jenkins almost picked it off Reese Davis right Ron want to take you around the family of networks the game on ESPN2 UCF and Texas delayed by lightning though the players are coming back onto the field Kevin Smith has the long touchdown in the game for UCF as they Christen their new stadium they're up 7-3 Michigan Notre Dame they've been a joke on offense two snaps over the quarterback's head there in negative yardage it's 10-nothing Michigan okay Reese wow running play Rankin turns the corner and he's going to be very close to a first down in fact the official is marking about a half yard short is there to make the stop well you look at that Notre Dame score and he'd never admit it not in a million years but there's a lot of people in these parts are pretty happy for Tyrone Willingham with what happened at Notre Dame he came to Washington when Washington just they needed somebody with vision and a disciplinarian and that's exactly what they got in Willingham and you look at Notre Dame from all of the guys that he recruited and now you're down to getting the Charlie Weiss's guys and a lot of people are saying Notre Dame made a big mistake by letting this man go Straight Ahead has the first down I know that Jim Tressel is a tremendous admirer of Ty Willingham Willingham of course had that great start and then things leveled out a little bit and they ran him off they brought Charlie in he's got a 10-year contract and uh I mean you watch Notre Dame Ron and there's just no two ways about it they're not good and and hearing two snaps over the head against Michigan and a lot of people in Washington were very happy that Tyrone was let go and they are very fortunate I think to have him here as the head coach the beneficiary yes quarterback draw fake the handoff and just took it right up the middle that's going to be a first down game of eight yards laurinitis makes the tackle but Jake Locker showing already what we talked about off the top you gotta respect him on every down and know where he is and he was the crown jewel of Tyrone willingham's first class and he's a guy that listen he was recruited by everybody in the country such a great High School quarterback a great High School pitcher and they can recruit around him and they've already started to do that laurinitis by the way already with three solo tackles in the ball game [Applause] flag comes down from the near sideline as Rankin is tackled by Ross Holman [Applause] obviously it's against Washington the illegal formation the Sixth Man on the line is [Applause] the under the line of scrimmage and uh jackaroo you could have been number seven I think I don't have any eligibility left guys you know one of the keys to being successful in any division is to make sure that you adjust to the tools that you're given that was the case for Tim lapino when he knew the offensive Court he knew that Jake Locker was going to be coming on board as the leader where'd he go to West Virginia to study the white Slaton combination says we've got the same thing with our quarterback and our running back here well it's a good observation because that's exactly what they do have Quick Pass complete gain of about six yards back it'll be a third down and they'll still need about two and a half Russo and it was interesting when Tim lopano started looking at teams that run the spread he started with what personnel do they have it's almost like when you're a golfer picking a professional golfer that has your life body type to study their swing and he saw with locker and Pat White very similar the speed that they have with Lewis Rankin kind of like Slayton so that was the right place for him to go look the difficult thing against a team like Ohio state with Laura knighterson company he got some guys they hitch illegally but they hit you tough and hard and you got to be careful and stay away from injury I'm not sure I'd try to run him 20 times today are you well we got a timeout we'll talk more about it just a moment three to nothing Buckeyes will be right back [Applause] so we're back 11. left until halftime three to nothing Ohio State second Drive of the afternoon for Washington their first one was 11 plays six minutes and 15 seconds but here comes the quarterback keeper and he picks up positive yardage in the first down but I'll tell you now he paid for it and this leads us to you continuing your answer on him being careful against a tough ball club like Ohio State Jake Locker may be the toughest guy on the entire Washington roster that that is why that people have kind of gathered around him as a leader but Ron as he starts to mature he had to go for it here because he was very close to a first down he's going to have to learn when to get out of bounds when to slide he he needs to run for this offense to be successful but if it's 15 20 times a game against teams like Ohio State and USC you don't want him keeping his pads up too much he's gonna have to learn how to get down but that fight at the end I don't think he got it he got close though well two pretty good guys coming after him Malcolm Jenkins and James laurenitis combined on the Stop and we'll see if they were successful in keeping Washington from picking up the first down there's one thing James Lauren nidis has seen a lot of running quarterbacks in his day I think the difference is Jake Locker's size he's almost 230 pounds so he's almost as big as laurenitis at 240. he drops his shoulder there ends up taking on Malcolm Jenkins who's over 200 pounds and you just don't expect that much power out of the quarterback position well the scary thing is what Jim Trussell said yesterday you know what that he may be faster than Vince Young sure looks he's not quite as long as Charlotte but he's awfully quick pass complete to Marcel Reese it'll be a gain of six and here's a good story and the reason they like Reese so much you talk about getting mismatches Marcel Reese is 6-3 okay he came here waiting 260 as a wide receiver he's down to 240 which means little quarterbacks are having to come up and Tackle what is equivalent to a bruising fullback and Tim labano said don't let his eyes fool you he's a mid four fives guy and last week had a 58-yard touchdown catch where he broke two tackles to take it the distance again from the shotgun got man coverage right over the middle boy the crowd wants a flag and I'm not so sure that they're wrong chick was the man who was right on top of Corey Williams [Applause] take a look a lot of man coverage early on I don't know right you know he had the left arm around I grabbed his left arm I think they should have called that it's okay if you have that arm there Locker took a shot right in the sternum at the end of that play but I think they probably could have got Chico on that one so it's third down and they need to take it to the 37-yard line of Ohio State looking he is hit as he throws and boy I'll tell you what that is costly because Reese Marcel Reese had broken free on a post route right down the middle and Locker came up awfully slow he's favoring the left side Ron it was a hit there by Hayward the freshman who's had to step up his game with the loss of Lawrence Wilson and he went right by The Tackle and and just level put his helmet right into the left shoulder of Jake Locker so it's punting time for the University of Washington we'll check on Locker on the far sideline High wobbly spiral gonna go out of bounds not sure he got all his money's worth on that one and they're going to say it is inside the 20. nope now he's walked beyond the 20 to the 21-yard line so let's take a timeout only a 20-yard kick and as we go to break one more look at that hit on Locker as he delivered the football we'll be right back ESPN's college football brought to you by Volkswagen when you get into a Volkswagen it gets into you and Aflac ask about it at work the first ever built Boeing 747 just one of the many historical aircraft found at the Museum of Flight here in Seattle turns the corner Wells 25-30 flag comes from down deep Jason Wells with a tackle on Beanie Wells and from where that one is thrown it looks as a holding yes it's going to be called against the Buckeyes so it erases a very fine 15-yard run Chris AKA Beanie Wells named that by his brother Ray because he was such a skinny little kid with a big head so he called him 10 yard pedaling from the spot of the foul repeat first down and let's go down and check in again with jackaroo Jack well we've been shadowing locker and I got to tell you guys he came off and he hadn't he had broken a sweat but he wasn't even breathing heavy I'll tell you what this guy is what they call in this sport a freak he's been taking a lot of hits but so far by my observation he hasn't shown any effects from it that one by Hayward though yeah I mean you know he may have to keep his [Applause] picked up by Washington now they're saying incomplete pass E.J Savannah's the man who came away with it boy there's talking about collisions with quarterbacks now this is not a reviewable Play When a play is called incomplete and the crowd will go crazy let's see if this looks out of beckman's hand before he goes forward oh yeah he does that's a fumble but it cannot be reviewed Ron when they call a pass incomplete they're blowing their whistles the play is dead not a reviewable play husky fans are not real happy about that now wait a minute now the whistle had blown you're exactly right it was a backwards pass [Applause] and this is it is well it is a mistake that's the mistake yeah and the Ohio State fans uh you should be understanding you just gave up a touchdown and it's not going to be counted against you it is second down and 15. Ohio State right up the middle Welles running hard out across the 20 to the 21-yard line that's Butler and E.J Savannah combining on the stop 10 took a lot of heat last year of course because of the Oklahoma Oregon debacle on the onside kick a call that was just flat out blown even after the replay that was the right call though Brian o'caine the referee that cannot be reviewed so they missed the call on the play but that was the right process not to review it third down lying to make is the 31. glitch coming from the top ball has tipped up the line of scrimmage and knocked down that's Rayford Caesar Raper the senior out of Spanaway Washington Daniel Taylor Nissan backs out into coverage so it's still just a four-man Rush and that was an excellent job there getting the hands up is Rayford who's six foot seven a lot like Cameron Hayward on the other side came down inside that's a big man to get the ball over officially this is Ohio State's first Punt and he'd give a nice job of gathering this one off the carpet it's returnable from the 41. Russo tackled at the 45 and let's check in again with Rhys Davis Reese what you got for us Ron gonna take you to the Big House Michigan and Notre Dame 10-nothing Wolverines Ryan mallick the president playing to the engine Chad Henney flips one to Mario Manningham against Wolverines on the doorstep Mike Hart would cash it in from there the Irish have roughly negative 25 yards of offense and Jimmy Claussen just through an interception and Michigan has the ball back in Fighting Irish territory it's on ABC 17-0 Wolverine well not surprised that Lloyd Carr's team gonna get it to bounce back got a man open over the middle throws it complete at the 30-yard line Corey Williams on the receiving end and the vertical right there crossed up Ohio State a little bit because that's really the first vertical route they've run today you know the one thing talking to Tyrone Willingham about this defense is they do make mistakes and that was just a mistake Marcus Freeman the will linebacker didn't get any depth he stayed in there and looked at Locker for too long and Locker throws it right over his head the hustle usually makes up for Ohio State but that was a bit of a blunt coverage Locker quarterback draw has five has ten down the sideline and finally out of Bounds at the nine and a half yard line first and goal Washington Huskies laurenitis and Kurt Coleman forced him out well when you have a quarterback and you know you're it's a designed run you get pads up watch The Right Guard Casey bulika the pads come up on the guy that he's blocking Nader Abdallah and he just drives him off and that's exactly where Locker runs behind when the guys think it's past their Pats come up you get your hands inside that's a nice job but if you like it number one Marcus Freeman was frozen on the play first and goal Washington Blitz coming up the middle they go straight ahead with Palmer the fullback and he'll have a game of about four yards on the play Paul Homer a sophomore out of Omaha Nebraska and when we saw that we thought oh my God yeah not a lot of guys coming to Washington from Nebraska I don't think well normally we couldn't hear that good they go down the road to Lincoln which is only about 45 miles if you're Ohio State be very aware of the option a straight option to the left with Homer and Homer's fast enough now he's over to the right but they can run the option out of this formation well you could see how much they've given up today and what they have been giving up for ball game is Washington will strike take it straight ahead clock runs under eight and a half minutes left until halftime three to nothing Buckeyes on top I'd like to see a little more getting your athletic quarterback out on the edge when you have first and goal inside the ten two handoffs to Homer inside he's a nice player but if I'm Washington I'd rather have Jake Locker with the ball out on the edge or run some type of option where he's going down the line of scrimmage I don't know if I want to give it to a fullback twice in a row Rankin and Homer two setbacks in the ball game this time Ohio State shows Blitz they come with it shovel pass and the ball was it picked off in the air it was caught yes laurenitis came up with the football the safest part of a shovel pass is the fact that once it hits the ground incomplete pass but this one didn't get to the ground because the all everything linebacker was right there to catch it the number one thing that causes turnovers is penetration there were three Ohio State Buckeyes in the face of locker when he goes to shovel this to Rankin check that there's five guys that have run by their blockers Locker should have just thrown that one in the dirt and come back for the next play that is a huge play believe he tipped it and got the interception that's an athletic play by him that's Maurice wells in motion number 34. pass over the middle is fought for did he catch it no signal is yet good for 16 yards Brian robisky seems as though the comfort zone for Beckman heart-line and also robisky the all of those guys were seem to really be on the same page and remember this is this offense had to change a little bit even though Beckman is plenty fast he actually has a faster 40 time than Troy Smith not quite the Dynamic Athlete Smith was so now they've gone back to a little more pocket passing and all of those receivers were backups basically last year so still working on some of that timing starting to look okay here in the third ball game that's Beanie Wells who split out way to the left side and they go deep foreign [Applause] you and Ed were talking about that ongoing chemistry development between the White House and uh and Mr Beckman it doesn't only take place during practice I've been watching off the sidelines Beckman and hardlock have been just huddled almost as if they were getting ready for an exam kind of debriefing each other throughout the course of their defense play in fact it's gotten to the point where they began to lobby for maybe back in the front in the air just a little bit more second down and ten for the Buckeyes Brittany Wells straight up the middle breaks the tackle has five has ten and it's going to be a run of about 12 yards on the play and what a great second and third effort on his part Jason Wells finally stopped it it runs right through Donald Butler Butler had him for a one or two yard gain and he just keeps chugging along you saw flashes of this last year of course split time with Antonio Pittman who decided to go to the NFL early but this offensive line playing much better than they did against Akron Youngstown State early on they are truly in harmony you're right Welch again maybe again up one and let's check it again with Reese Davis Reese all right Ryan want to check in right now on what's going on with Texas and UCF Colt McCoy to Nate and Jones boy Jones has really stepped up the veteran wide receiver making the catch there Texas goes ahead of UCF 10-7 and Sam Bradford Sam Bradford still tied in the touchdown passes to incompletions category for Oklahoma although he did finally throw an interception Sooners rolling over Utah State wow well the Sooners are very good and of course that first Saturday in October is the annual Red River rivalry pass almost intercepted Donald Butler had his hands all over it and it was just a little too tall how many times do you hear coaches talk about turnovers it is one of the biggest cliches in all the football because it's so true Mark missed down that's two dropped interceptions by the Washington Huskies the first one by Roy Lewis that time by Donald Butler if you're going to win in big games like this you have to make those plays third down and the line to make is the Washington at 49. buckeyes lead at three to nothing just over six to play until halftime and a pass thrown complete but short of the first down what do you do right here with this field position do you boot it away well the way Jim trussell's defense is playing Ron yeah I think you kick it away right now Washington has gotten some yardage but they've made the plays when they need to and on the road I don't think you want to get too risky right now he's sending tropasso out on the field the putter only the second time that Ohio state has had to punt today the first time they ran into the kicker did Washington so that one that was not counted as a puck this the second time that they booted it Russo bear catch and is made at the 16-yard line so let's take a timeout 5 pencil halftime show we are back 557 left until halftime three to nothing Ohio State Locker rolls it to the right this time still looking drills the ball and just throws that one way over the intended receiver and let's take a look at the John Hancock game tracks there's been a lot of offensive yardage so far but not much to show of it Beady Wells has run very well today Ron he just looks great and then of course the missed field goal and Ohio State's played it a little conservative because their defense is making some plays they've given up yardage but that one of course a huge interception down inside the 10-yard line by James Laura Knight has turned things around [Applause] second down in 10 Washington see the blitz coming right up the middle draw play and they had it snuck down he's going to wind up with about a two-yard gain on it Abdullah is the man who is there to make the stop Junior out of Metairie Louisiana and Jake Locker they're getting behind the sticks remember yesterday Tim lapano said we have to be able to get yardage positive yardage on first down now you're sitting staring at third and eight that's not quite the strength of Jake Locker yet he's a young man who's not quite in the pocket so they if I'm watching I move him again to the right but you may get a blitz again coming from that side to get it out of his hand Washington four of seven on third down conversions this time they picked up the blitz pass over the middle in and out of the hands of Corey Williams and now a flag is down at the line of scrimmage penalty against the Huskies well quarterback John David Moody and the number one ranked USC Trojans will head to Lincoln Nebraska tonight for a meeting with the upset-minded Cornhuskers in front of one of the toughest crowds in college football Saturday Night Football presented by Southwest Airlines at ABC 8 o'clock Eastern and one of the interesting stories to follow in that game is Sam Keller yeah who transferred from Arizona State to Nebraska was leading a couple of years ago USC number one USC 21-3 at halftime gave a little fist bump came out and lost 38-28 got hurt the next week and then that ended up getting him to transfer to Nebraska when they made a quarterback change right before the 0-6 season so the penalty is well it has been stepped off I beg your pardon him the penalty pushes it back to the 10-yard line baldman waiting for the snap about five yards deep in his own End Zone Buckeyes could get really good field position out of this one end over in Kick caught at the 47 of Ohio State robisky tries to reverse his field and he's going to have a nice return to the 42-yard line of Washington so let's take a timeout 4 51 left until the halftime Buckeyes three to nothing so we're back in Seattle you're looking at the Young Brandon sane at number three a freshman out of Piqua Ohio first time we've seen him this afternoon the folks he's a flyer he really has some good speed pass is caught and stepping out of bounds immediately his heart line and Jack that's part of those conversations you were talking about that the youngsters are having on the sideline every time the offense goes over to get a break you go back to Washington's penalty listen Ohio state was going to get good field position regardless but Chad Macklin the right tackle a senior that you need to rely on gets the personal foul post the play so you mark that off and in a game that you get in the center field position is going to decide it that's a big mistake so five yards stepped off against the Buckeyes the play comes back I apologize the officials microphone he did not get on that replay near sideline 40 35 and this is saying the young man was just talking about he's going to take that all the way down inside the 20-yard line it's a gain of 28 on the play this a young man that they've been trying to work in to the rotation he holds the Ohio record high school record in 100 meters at 10-3-8 and he weighs 220. if that that's the part that's shocking to me and of course the NCAA now allows colleges to play pay for kids summer school and a lot of these Young Buckeyes came in and worked all summer and they've been excited for this young man for several months this time for Mani formation Buckeyes lead it three to nothing trying to tack some more on sane this time will be stopped after a gain of one clock about to go under four minutes gunheim on the bottom of the stack and time of possession in this first half trying to 13-43 for Ohio State and 1209 for the Huskies show some long drives but Ohio State's the only one who's been able to come away with some points Robinson the fullback s to sane saying picks up the blitz pass incomplete at the 10-yard line it'll be third down Jake Ballard the intended receiver can't say enough about this offensive line Ron how much better they're playing than they did against Youngstown State in Akron no pressure whatsoever Beckman came down to his third choice on that play and nobody was even close to him now the question becomes will Kent Fair bring pressure I would think pressure and with a guy like sane a delayed draw May pop it for they have now moved saying out of the backfield that is him who has pulled off down to the lower part of your screen Blitz coming right up the middle pass is caught and not going to be enough for the first down at the 10-yard line Brian Hartline again vonzell McDowell Jr on the Stop and now a little different I think that Ohio State's going to go for it here and I think they're bringing Beanie Wells in I think this is the right call earlier I thought they should have kicked it feels like they have some momentum now and I think this is the right call and I wouldn't mess around with a 235 pound back just get him right downhill and let him try to pound it for the first down and the way he's been running the ball today I think he could almost point to him and say he's going to carry it guys can you stop him and a timeout now has been called by Ohio State show will be right back 251 left until halftime Buckeyes three nothing [Applause] pedal to the metal loud in Loudon volume on fall in Fenway first Firepower in the foliage as NASCAR comes to New Hampshire then the game's best rivalry in a pennant race on Sunday Night Baseball forget the pretty leaves remember the day it's tomorrow on ABC and ESPN the show the officials did not hold up play and the running play by Ohio State paid dividends all the way to the two-yard line but it's coming back Ohio state will be penalized five yards and erase a very nice 10-yard run so now the field goal unit comes on false start so both teams now with a mistake in the red zone it costs Washington at least a field goal if not a touchdown on the intercepted shovel pass now we've had a person moving on the front and it should have been at the two yard line for Ohio State you wonder why coaches get ulcers they're on the road you're in a battle somebody jumps off sides this is going to be a 32-yard attempt by pretorius it's blocked that is the second bad snap we've seen Ron there was a skip earlier this is the man who got his hands on it Jordan rapid a senior out of Moses Lake Washington that ball bounces it hits right when it gets to the hands of John Toma and he can barely get the ball up and that made the ball come out much lower than you would expect on a short kick so put that one on the Snapper Ron a good job by Tomah to get it down but it messed up the timing for pretorius and repping a fifth year senior one of the only fifth year seniors at Washington gets a hand up and boy what a change of momentum whoa two minutes and 40 seconds showing on the clock until halftime it remains three to nothing Ohio State and it's a quarterback draw blocker cuts it up first man to get there Marcus Freeman the junior out of Huber Heights Ohio well in Washington with 225 and two timeouts they're huddling it's a little shocking I know he's a redshirt freshman but you've gone through spring practice with him as a starter you've gone through the fall I would expect him not to huddle but seems like an awfully big waste of time to get back there and talk about it second down and four under two minutes now and this ball almost intercepted Donald Washington who yesterday coach Russell said probably is as underrated as anybody they have uh on their football team Malcolm Jenkins is known as maybe the best cover Corner in America but he's hitting at Donald Washington runs under the radar and he's really glad that they've got him at Ohio State and at the other quarterback position [Applause] now got a man wide open through and high but he got it complete and there's Marcel Reese the big receiver who was high in the air and came down with a 17-yard game one of the things that Locker is going to have to do Ron is work on his touch excellent job by Reese You've Got Deep coverage and the safety is late getting over there that's Malcolm Jenkins who is actually playing off in a safety position is late getting over there but this ball need a little more touch on that nice job by Reese going up to get it but you don't have to zip it you could have laid that ball in there you had time ranking in the tail back he's blocking right now Locker 5 10 15. counted off at over 20 yards on the play but that's what I was talking about back in the first quarter you've got to have somebody you'd have to defend all 11 when you got a quarterback who can run and it's his first step that is so quick he's got good top end speed but there's a lot of guys who run good 40 times but it takes them 10 or 15 yards to get to full speed Locker when he decides to take off his first and second step he runs away from people and I don't care what you do all week in practice Ron you cannot mimic that he's just too fast when he gets going so the Huskies very quickly set up shop inside Ohio State territory Buckeyes show Blitz but they go with the running play and it's going to be ranking for short yardage he'll get out of bounds to stop the clock 123 on the clock until halftime Thaddeus Gibson was there to make the stop Washington was still two timeouts and this is part of the process that young quarterbacks have to go through and part of the process quite frankly for Ohio State defensively this is a young group and one thing Jim haycock said you know last year we lost nine guys but we fourth and fifth year guys were who came in and guys who've been playing there's a lot of youngsters out here for Ohio State and their hands are on their hips right now chasing around Locker Curtis Shaw checks into the ball game a tailback for Washington and he gets the pass screen they spin him around and now being pushed back to the 39-yard line Anderson Russell was the man who uh was the spearhead of the attack and they're going to give him forward progress a gain of one it'll be third down Washington needs to take it to the 28 and the clock runs we're now under one minute until halftime that's a blow to the head that they missed should have called that and yes he is reaction he's saying but they're wasting a lot of time here Ron yep they are they're going to put themselves where they have to hurry up and they didn't have to get to this position 42 seconds down to 41. flag is down deep over the middle ball to intercepted because the receiver didn't even go after it Kirk Coleman came down with it well they're getting Ben osai the left tackle for moving early and this this is just other than a couple of plays by Locker fall start number 79 on the offense Washington has not looked like a well-boiled two-minute machine they've wasted a lot of time and now backing themselves up quickly let's go to the studio Reese Davis all right Ryan we'll give you a little peek behind the scenes this is our screening area as we get ready for the Pontiac performance halftime report we're watching Florida and Tennessee as the balls have flown a lot of opportunities here it's this monitor one of the 11 that has Lou in a catatonic State he hasn't moved much like Notre Dame's offense Mayday picked up what's wrong with the Irish at least part of their offense we'll break it down coming up at halftime okay Reese look forward to that Locker rolls the pocket drills the pass has it complete for the first down they're down to the 23-yard line Anthony Russo made the catch and it's good for 16 yards well this is a excellent excellent route by Anthony Russo Locker running to that side Russo able to come down towards the linebacker and then break it out he's actually running right at James Laura knightison as soon as he breaks out balls thrown right on time keep your eye on Lewis Rankin last week he threw a touchdown pass after they handed it off to him on a sweep In The End Zone intended for Quentin Daniels in fact Quentin is the man who was the beneficiary of that halfback pass last week well again we saw the throw earlier to Marcel Reese that floated on Locker he's got a very Lively arm remember this guy was a drafted pitcher coming out of high school and you tend to see that with the young quarterbacks they have such a lively arm they want to get so much on it especially over the middle and that ball floated on Locker nine seconds showing on the clock it is second down and ten and if you just joined us it's Ohio state three and the Huskies nothing and you've got time with your timeouts again I don't think they've managed the clock well but they could take a shot and then get a timeout if they need to and now timeout has been called by the Huskies [Applause] and we'll be back in just a moment [Applause] another good look at the capacity crowd here in fact it's band day the entire End Zone to our left but what I say that the end zone not in the stands but beyond the end zone there are white chairs there for several thousand high school kids who are here on Band-Aid on the field second down and 10. nine ticks showing on the clock until halftime Ohio State coming with the blitz right up the middle Locker got a man give credit to the Husky offensive line for giving their quarterback that extra second to get this pass away Perkins to attempt the extra point he's got it and with three seconds left until halftime the Washington Huskies have come from behind and put it in the end zone with a four-point lead watch the throw the safety Jenkins is just late getting over he's locked onto the eyes of locker locker puts it on the outside but boy he's got to get over there a little quicker we talk about the arm of locker this is a really good throw to put it away from the defender and a drive that the clock wasn't managed very well when you have an athlete like that you can make up for it let's go down to the sideline jackaroo Well Ron it may not have been managed very well but there was a level of calmness that emanated first from the head coach and was transferred to his players I think maybe the seeds were sewn for that with the type of practice we saw all week here yes they look for Quality they don't get rattled and they never show a sense of urgency paid off that time boy that's for sure Jack nine plays on the drive 80 yards two minutes and 31 seconds [Applause] well that's tank who picks up the ball and he's going to be stopped we are at halftime tag Whaley is the man who picked up the squib kick and the two teams head toward the locker room and jackaroot is about to visit with the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes and we'll get his opinion and let's go down to Jack Jack well coach he said before the game this is going to be a game of Discovery what have you discovered you know our guys are hanging in their tough they're playing hard you know hats off to Washington went down and scored right there at the end and and but our guys are playing hard we need to make less mistakes a couple penalties really hurt us especially that fourth and one where we clearly had it well made but we got to play a better second half how about offensively a little bit more in the air in the second half or do you still rely on the rush well we'll see you know we want to be a balanced football team and and you know the only times we were being stopped was when we were stopping ourselves so you know we've got to be balanced good luck coaching okay Jack thanks so much for score at halftime is Washington seven and the Buckeyes three and now let's join Rhys Davis Lou Holtz and Mark May in our studio gentlemen all right Ron glad to have you along on the Pontiac performance halftime report Marcel Reese said this week we have our Swagger back the Huskies are back and they take a lead to halftime against Ohio State and it's Senator Trussell mentioned the Buckeyes have missed some opportunities Mark but at the same time Washington had a potential touchdown taken away as well and they did and you look at their offense obviously Jake Locker is the key for Washington but I think if you look at their defense coming into this game Tyrone Willingham put an emphasis on their defense they're giving up 11 points a game coming into the game what they've been able to do on defense and special teams against the Ohio State Buckeyes has been impressive in the first half the thing that jumps out at me is the difference a quarterback makes you can't say enough positive things about Jake Locker his enthusiasm for the game he's only a redshirt freshman the way he runs the football he's made a lot of big plays his accuracy the arm strength and it's just overall leadership but it's also a prime example of Ohio State allowing the team to stay in and pretty soon they're going to reach up and bite you they've missed one field goal had another field goal block and finally made one so Washington has the 7-3 lead at the half with the men that some have called the West Coast Tim Tebow Tim Tebow welcome back to ESPN college football presented by cars.com 7-3 our score at halftime the Huskies of Washington getting a touchdown with under five seconds to play in the first half we thought we would have an even ball game here today but Ed and looking at the stats in the first half time of possession and everything else they're almost Even Steven the entire way down and I think coach Russell said it best when he was talking to Jack on the way off the field stop making mistakes both teams have made mistakes Washington dropped two sure interceptions Ohio State going down to score they jump off sides they had first and goal inside the five so a tight ball game like this when you have a chance to make the plays you've got to make him in for Ohio State I think we're going to see a lot of Beanie Wells here in the second half that sounds like a good prescription but the doctor I'm telling you so Washington will get the ball to open the second half of play from the six yard line Sean and finally ridden out of bounds by the kicker and let's go down to the sideline and hear from Jackal root if you know Tyrone you know that what he said to his team was play upon their emotions just before they came out he challenged him and said fellas this is why we traveled halfway across the country to play A ranked team this is why we practice for seven straight weeks he said the final 30 minutes today will Define our season and it's still September well the report card is extremely important Jack you're right for both of these ball clubs they're 2-0 but they still don't know and won't know until after today's game exactly how they stand pass is Too Tall and incomplete now here is today's game track presented by John Hancock 69 of those rushing yards for Washington coming out of the quarterback position in Jake Locker and the passing yards for Ohio State I said you're going to see a lot of Beanie Wells in the second half I think what they've got to do for Ohio State offensively is get him going again and then suck down those safeties and take some shots over the top but like you mentioned unbelievable how close Washington's been very good on third down conversions linebackers creeping up and they come with a Crossing action and Washington catches them with a quarterback keeper and it'll be good for the first down Jake Locker kept the ball and a stuck with the two linebackers Crossing for Ohio State and he just steps into the open area excellent job on the backside then outside working one-on-one against Cameron Hayward sometimes you don't block that guy but that was a it looked like he wasn't even sometimes you think that's an option to rank and I think that was a keeper all the way Jake Locker 10 of 20 111 yards one touchdown and one interception Blitz coming off the Corner Washington runs directly at it it's going to be a gain of one talk about something that the coaches said yesterday we were talking with the offensive coach in Ultra with the head coach about Ohio State really likes to confuse they've walked those linebackers up constantly and Tyson we're not going to get into a battle of chekhovs at the line of scrimmage yeah they explain why they decided early in the week we've got a freshman quarterback and they don't want him having to play back and forth with the defense I'll check into something they back out I checked to something else they're calling plays today locking them in and I think it's the right thing to do early in the quarterback's career pass complete to the fullback Homer and I'll tell you give credit to the defensive end who stayed right at home and made the quarterback Locker throw the ball immediately that was a nice job when you saw that last week talking about the audibles Ron when we watch the Akron tape Akron stood there got the call from the sideline and all Laura nidis and all his linebacker mates were doing was shuffling in and out backing up we're in man no we're in zone and the Washington coaches this week said nope we're not going to play that game with these guys and another reason Ohio state was doing that that they were up against a uh you know check with me type of offense third down and he wants to throw pass delivered complete and boy let's see where they spot it whoa this is very very close Washington on the tackle Corey Williams got the reception what do you think fourth in about 10 inches I'm thinking the Tyrone willingham's going to go for it he's asking for I believe he's asking them for to come out and measure so he can see how short it is but Locker really hung in the pocket on this one this is where his Lively arm comes in this is a long throw and he takes one right in the gut by Anderson Russell a young man who was injured a bunch last year playing very well so they're going for it fourth down and as Ed said about 10 inches and yep he's going to have it as the official runs in that second little push going backwards is what got it Anderson and Coleman are Russell and Coleman on the tackle well you know the coaches are going to critique everything that Jake Locker does because he's such a talent but such a young guy when you go for the quarterback sneak against teams like Ohio State USC Oklahoma places like that probably just want to keep your head down and bull forward you start spinning out and you're going to get a linebacker 240 pound linebacker that's going to drill you and stop you short but this is you don't want to slow down the athleticism of this young man when we talked to Jim trassell yesterday he said if you're going to run your quarterback we're going to tell our defense every single chance you get you better be trying to move him around there well they could have called that boy [Applause] I don't know how you don't call that a a 15-yard personal foul face mask I mean you know Jim dressel does not teach dirty football these guys play hard but that was twisting the head around pretty good show it's first down the new line of scrimmage the Buckeyes 38-yard line and nobody was on the same page on that one we had uh more than a couple false starts five yards will be stepped off looks like Ryan Toler is the man who Moved first Ryan is quite a story and the fact that some guys came in fat I just put it that way they were two ways about it and so Ryan Toler a true freshman was given the opportunity to be the number one at left guard and he has not relinquished it a lot of people here thought the Tyrone Willingham was doing that to motivate the older guys and this is like a dog with a bone he said I'm not backing out of here this is Reese Marcel Reese the large wide receiver and now here comes a flag and that is going to cost Ohio State 15 yards exactly what we were talking about at halftime Ron mistakes this is a mistake by Ohio State The Tackle is made you've got to give up over on the sideline they're going to get a huge personal foul and Russell just didn't need to do it play was out of bounds whistle was being called good job by Reese you know what back away from that I believe it was a late hit I don't think that they're calling Washington here it's that push right there at the end and Russell just needs to know to back off of that so the 15 yards post play foul is stepped off the new line of scrimmage is the Ohio state 19-yard line Buckeyes show Blitz off the right corner United failed to play Larry Grant is the first man to make the hit down to jack a root guys you know since we hit Seattle all we've heard is locker locker locker locker Mr everything I found out after some investigation though he is unable to do a couple of things seems when he was 11 years old he got on a skateboard like most of his mates fell off for the first time has never been on a skateboard ever again he can't wait for it and he can't snowboard I guess he's not a candidate for the X Games the way he's playing in four years he's going to make a lot more money though ball is pitch back great Pursuit by Ohio State and this play is going backwards it's going to be a loss for four Malcolm Jenkins is the man who forced the play and I would say the intensity on the last two plays particularly on the part of the Buckeyes is up and increased and it's that getting to the edge play that we saw him try to do in the first half with the speed of Ohio State such a great compliment by Tyrone Willingham yesterday for Ohio State about the effort that they give not only does Jim trassell's defense blast with speed but they get great effort and right now all the running plays that have been successful have been between the tight ends that stuff on the outside is just not flying Chen's play of the drive it started at the Washington 41-yard line they got to take it down to the nine yard line laurenitis is there to bring him down and it'll be fourth down and a field goal attempt would here would be in the vicinity of 45 yards well Jim haycock doing an excellent job Laura Knight has lined up to the outside here that's one thing that they said he really worked on was how he used his hands that time going up against Michael Gottlieb threw him off and was able to make the play show the attempt is going to be 46 yards darnitis by the way with seven tackles in this ball game already good pass and it's blocked right in the middle Coleman number four a sophomore out of Clayton Ohio got a hand on it Kurt Coleman the strong safety second block of the year against Washington Ryan Perkins had one blocked last week against Boise State so let's take a timeout 7-3 Huskies on top I'll draw before we go this telecast is available on ESPN HD presented by Pioneer Kuro HD TV Wells back in the ball game at tailback as this crowd really gets loud at Husky Stadium they'll give it to him in a draw play two yards tackle made leading the way was E.J Savannah and Donald Butler watch Curtin who's the wingman he's got to get down and close this Gap watch he just throws a little chicken wing in there and then you bounce back out to make the outside guy run the hump he gets nothing on Kurt Coleman that's his football one-on-one do you expect a veteran guy to get down there you make make the other guy go around you because he's probably not going to get there but you got to close off that inside cap 35-30 he's gone 10-5 touchdown Brian robisky 68 yards [Applause] well Washington has not shown a lot of man coverage and a lot of that has to do with the young freshman vonzel McDowell and Beckman saw right away that he had 101 on robisky the robisky ran right by the true freshman extra point is up and is good is taking time out our new score with 9 36 left to play in the third quarter is Ohio State 10 and the Washington Huskies seven ESPN's college football brought to you by BMW the ultimate driving machine and Sonic it's not just good it's Sonic good hey Jack heads up [Applause] hey Jack how about that guys great hands but you're not riding in my car back to the hotel [Applause] I tell you the guy who threw that from Pike Place Market all the way down to Husky Stadium he's got an arm they should sign an arm I'm telling you it's about eight miles away the crow flies the fish is being donated to the food bank I'm not sure where the coat's going guys well you bought it at Goodwill just take it back there from the five and down up to 24 and let's check in well wait a minute now the ball is loose Ohio state is saying that they have it but as you can see a massive pile up at the 25-yard line Ohio State football well true freshman plenty of speed that ball is out so even if they review it it stays but you know you get these young guys in there they get into traffic not even much of a hit James Scott I believe is the man who came away with it and is being credited with the recovery so a huge turn of events here and the Buckeyes of Ohio State placed in a position where they could put some real distance in this ball game don't be surprised if they take a shot even though they're lined up in the eye formation a lot of times you're seeing that quick change take a shot with one of these guys down at the bottom Minnie Wells bounces it outside 20 down to the 15. it'll be a first down Reese Davis let's check back with you right Ron Texas and UCF in Orlando tied game 10-10 and Brandon Foster gets to deflection takes it back for a pick six UCF quarterback Kyle Israel three of 14 in the first half and the horns have a 10 point lead at the break 20-10 our situation first down Ohio State they scrimmage from the Washington 14 yard line Wells again gets outside he's going to score 10 five touchdown Ohio State and within 60 seconds they have reversed the momentum and the fortunes of this football game because of a Washington mistake and if you've watched Ohio State play over the last couple years they run this play and run this play and run this play where they pull one of the guards to go up that hole was so big the guard didn't even have to get a block and Wells is so much more Nimble on his feet than you expect from a near 240 pound man ran right by a quarterback well Victorious with the extra point attempt is up and good and eight minutes and 57 seconds left in the third quarter all of a sudden our score instead of Ohio State trailing 7-3 they're up by 10. you know Jim Trestle when we met with him yesterday was talking about this is a game where we figure out where we are we're very young so let's find out who we are on offense but you just can't block it up any better than that so they had some questions about their offensive line in those first two games I think they're being answered right now because McDowell you feel bad for the Freshman he just he's out there on an island because all of the purple shirts were smothered by guys in white Louis Rankin is the man who is back deep this time for the Huskies standing at the five yard line you can see the Ohio State players on the bench trying to congratulate everybody on their Hustle and they're hard to play and that's one of the things that this Ohio State team is always known for is the fact that they play hard and Tyrone willingham's about to find out about his buck as well Victorious with the kick not going to make the End Zone it's returnable from the one-yard line it's ranking and jackaroo let's check back with you you know we've seen a lot of shifts of momentum but I want to take you back that score may be traceable back to the stop by the defense when the defense came off the first people to congratulate them as they went out to take over was the Ohio State offense all of a sudden you could see a palpable electricity developing here on the sidelines and thus far it has not gone low wattage well number one defense in the country and this offense think of all of the guys they lost Troy Smith Gonzalez Pittman again it's going to take them a little while but when you've got the number one defense in the country yeah you better Pat him on the back when they come off well Washington totally out of sync now as three different players jump Macklin and Lewis particularly and they're going to be scrimmaging with the first and 15. well now it's time for our Aflac trivia question this week's question Ohio State started the season with wins against Youngstown State and Akron what School from Ohio beat the Buckeyes last beat them College of Wooster Case Western or Denison oh you got to go back a few years to find the laws of the state of Ohio for Ohio State apparently well the helmet comes completely off the receiver Corey Williams well there's another little rake of the face mask and that stitches effort this Ohio State Defense Jim haycock and his assistants the defense coordinator have these guys playing at a very high level effort-wise [Applause] almost intercepted after it was chipped and it was a Marcel Reese who the pass was intended for chimday chiqua is uh on the cover for Ohio State and another thing that uh Jake Locker needs to start working on is under throwing the ball a little bit more cheek was in great position you can see that as a quarterback because you're looking at it the whole way really under throw that one of two things good can happen pass interference or your guy sees it he's going to come back and make a play tried to get too much air on that third down they need to take it out to the 33-yard line to keep this drive going pass almost intercepted [Applause] and made a diving attempt couldn't hold on well that's not a very good answer by Washington's offense and you talk about the momentum I think Jacka root is right it's all starting on the defensive side of the ball for Ohio State they are in Jake Locker's head a little bit he was locked into that receiver the entire time and Coleman read him and almost came up with a play [Applause] ballman stands back to putt good high coverage kick Bearcats called for and made at the 35 by small so let's take a time out after that 41-yard boot 7 47 left in the third Buckeyes 17-7 so we're back in Seattle Ohio State 17-7 their last two drives two touchdowns taking only four plays 96 yards and using up 80 Seconds and the Bucks have got it back at their own 35. Beckman near side got it complete robisky again breaks the tackle and then is being forced out of Bounds at around the 40-yard line let's check in with Reese Davis all right Ryan the outcome of the game is certainly not in doubt Oklahoma against Utah State but watch the Red Sox freshman DeMarco Murray gets a great hole and he is off and gone 92 yards he houses it his sixth touchdown of the seasons Sooners are rolling again 45-3 Bruce the amazing thing about that football team is they got two more running backs just like him so what one doesn't get for you the other two will uh it's going to be an amazing test as they go through the Big 12 as to who is going to be man enough or men enough I should say to knock off the Oklahoma Sooners Alex Boone left tackles called for holding but Ohio state is really going after the Freshman McDowell right now I believe that Tate Washington has taken him out of the lineup to this play on first down here's a pass to sansenbacher and he will take it out to the 32-yard line well Kent bear had seen a knob of been picking on McDowell so Matt Mosley comes in Washington a little down at the cornerback they have a transfer out of UCLA Byron Davenport that they were counting on him he just can't get his hamstrings healthy so you roll out a true freshman against a team like Ohio State you pay the price Matt Mosley was a wide receiver they just moved him over at the beginning of King second down and again they stretch the field showing the strength of his arm that's a tough throw but it also was a tough cover robisky and who did they go after went right after Matt Mosley if there was a weakness on this Washington defense it was in the secondary because of the lack of depth at corner they're very good on their defensive line very physical they're great at linebackers now Ohio State starting to exploit some of the youth and inexperience of Washington and here's the good news for the Buckeye fans Beckman looks very comfortable in the pocket because his offensive line is playing great over the 10-point lead they're not as reticent about throwing the football they put it on the ground and this is not going to have the first down E.J Savannah steps up in the hole and knocks down Beanie Wells for about a yard loss so it's going to be fourth now well and now see if the Washington defense can start giving some some momentum to the Washington offense just like Ohio state had done at the beginning of this quarter [Applause] Russo is the Deep man capasso waiting for the snap back at the 28-yard line and another low pass from Center and they even had a couple of warm-ups there before the offense came on the field [Applause] well win or lose both of these coaches are going to have a lot of teaching to do they're just it feels like the first game a little bit guys making mistakes some blunt coverages dropping interceptions that should have been caught good pass this time from McQuaid and a Dandy punt wow this thing may go to Lake Washington it bounds into the end zone he jettisoned that thing 53 yards a career long okay early we asked we asked question Ohio State started the season wins it against Youngstown and Akron what's cool from Ohio beat the Buckeyes and I'm going to guess Denison I don't have any idea what's going with Overland just because okay I've been looking through the book now for about 20 minutes and can't find it and I can't find it in the book either I got nothing you've got got fish in your hands is what you got oberlining 76 in 1921. obviously Jack was coming out of high school before the SATs Jackie always guess C if you don't know the answer quarterback keeper Locker still going he's going to take it for a 12-yard gain Malcolm Jenkins on the tackle Jack let's go back to you you know I watched Jake Locker while his defense was on the field and you would think is a is a redshirt freshman you might be a little rattled right now you might be a little upset very calm demeanor went over talked to his assignment coach upstairs went over sat with his wide receivers really didn't show a lot of emotion what he showed me was a Steely resolve kind of like a guy looking down the barrel of a gun you can't rattle this guy I'm not sure if he can get him in the end zone Rankin the ball carrier Kurt Coleman again coming up from that safety position to make the tackle we've been lucky enough in our first three ball games we got to see Josh Freeman the great true sophomore in Kansas State who I think is just going to be a tremendous quarterback we saw Sam Bradford last week at Oklahoma who has the same type of demeanor they're all kind of different quarterbacks in Jake Locker there's something about these young guys that come in and Lead and it was Ron Prince of Kansas State he I think sums it up best emotionally neutral doesn't get too high doesn't get too low because the entire team is looking at that guy [Applause] gotta be in the wide open over the middle tied in Robert Lewis and he will have the first down plus about eight yards and there's a whole slew of freshman quarterbacks starting around the country Sam Bradford there's not there was that was about the only question at Oklahoma before the season was how they were going to be at that position and he's played very well Cody Hawkins of course Dan Hawkins son at Colorado and Jimmy Claussen taking his lumps at Notre Dame they were negative yardage I think at halftime against Michigan so some good some bad so far play ranking Paul what a move that he put on and he'll take it to the 45-yard line for a gain of six well this is what the Washington coaches have seen Lewis Rankin his ability I mean he spun Kurt Coleman around yes he did right it's the one step it's the left right back on the left and Coleman goes right on his Fanny he's going to catch a little heat for that one in the film room tomorrow but that's the type of moves Rankin possesses so it's a second down they need about four yards Buckeyes leading by 10 we're under four minutes to play third quarter they keep them walking and up there on the left side then there's the pressure gets away from it gonna run it and we'll have the first step and plus a lot more you see why they love him wow I mean this kid there is no give up in here 17 yards on the Run Larry Grant is the man who was walking up and coming with the Blitz you know when Jim Trestle said yesterday that this guy might be faster than Vince Young I didn't quite buy that I'm starting to think he might be right Vince gained maybe some because he had such long strides but his explosion when he decides to go I just don't think people realize the acceleration he has well now they're scrimmaging from the 28-yard line of Ohio State this time the Buckeyes stay at home back into the boundary with the carry is ranking and quickly let's check in with Reese Davis Reese all right Ryan Florida at one point at it 28-6 lead on Tennessee is 28-13 Gators in the red zone and Tim Tebow throws his first interception of the year the true freshman for the volunteers Eric Berry is going to take it end to end and all of a sudden the balls are back in at 28-20 in the swamps okay wow nice story on game day today about uh the family workouts that they are having down at Florida one day a week including the kids in the family right now they need to get that team together as a family quick look and cannot hold on Marcel Reese and I'll tell you as big as Reese is that would have been a tough task for Jenkins to make the tackle because the 240 pound receiver with a head of steam had the ball been thrown right there for him that have been tough and Locker gets knocked down at the end of the play very dangerous play Cameron Hayward goes down on his left leg but again that's one of those throws that's the 97 mile an hour fastball it does just doesn't quite have to be that at all and that's one of the places that Bradford and Oklahoma is touch is ahead of both Kansas State's young guy and this young guy he knows how to put touch and knows when to throw that pass his second pick-off of the day and he's tackled by Jake Locker if you're a Texas Fan that looks awfully familiar it's the exact same interception James laurenitis made at the beginning of the second half last year and that huge win in Austin for Ohio State that propelled them towards the national championship game he's up at the line of scrimmage and backs away and Locker never saw him it's hard enough as a quarterback to see a middle linebacker anyway but because laurenitis came up and then backed away he just never saw what an excellent job by Laura nidis so again the Ohio State Defense bails him out and let's see if the offense can answer they did on back-to-back Series in an 82nd period Beanie Wells and I had four very tough yards there well if Jim Tressel's defense keeps making plays they're Washington's going to get a face full of Beanie Wells he's going to start Jim trassell and Jim Bowman and those guys are going to want to shrink this clock and laurenitis with two interceptions today one that fantastic play on the shovel pass but that one there Ron that's just Instinct he came up he wasn't getting anywhere Blitzen comes out makes a really nice play got to be impressed with like the teaching that's still going on on the sideline they're up by 10 points in the ball game but they come up with another big steal but yet the coaches are there teaching and still teaching it's going to be out to the 50-yard line to Hartline and he'll have the first down and the guy that's teaching them is Jim haycock now he's got some history at the University of Washington he was the defensive line coach here from 83-87 I was lucky enough to be here as a freshman before Jim left to be the head coach at Illinois State he's not your typical defensive coordinator you know those guys are usually going about 170 miles an hour in a 55 mile an hour Lane Jim is very laid back he's a teacher he you know he'll raise his voice but it's more about what are we doing what's our structure a very smart coach Blitz off the corner down below past run complete again to robinsky and robisky you get him in space and he may be 6'3 but he is troubled to bring down as well Mosley finally got him well in this veteran staff you know it was funny talking to Tyrone Willingham yesterday we asked him what the concerns he had the very first thing he said was this coaching staff of Ohio State and you see right now with Jim Bowman and Jim trassell and Joe Daniels they're going after the weakness of Washington when they throw it and having their way Brittany Wells again ran into his own man and that's the only thing that slowed him down and then he fights his way to the 30. it'll be a second down at about three E.J Savannah will be credited with the tackle and Wells who went over 100 yards for the first time last week in his career over 100 yards two weeks in a row and he seems to have gotten a little more patient I think you know his offensive Line's playing well which helps but that's one thing they've been working really hard with Chris on two tight ends of the ball game nickel and Ballard and again they'll work the big guy pumping away has the first down taking bodies with him and also this clock now is just disappearing we are almost at the end of the third quarter euphoa is the man who made the tackle for Washington well and you almost start to feel sorry for the safeties that's mesven Forrester who has to come up and he hasn't been touched Wells has not been touched by the time he gets there this defensive line for Washington starting to get a little tuckered out well now that time of possession is beginning to take its toll timeout called by Ohio State let's take it with him 107 left third quarter Buckeyes by 10. IBM presents the 25 greatest players ever number 25 Ernie Nevers Ernie Nevers was an All-American at Stanford University and played in the 1925 Rose Bowl Stanford coach Pop Warner called Nevers the football player without a fault IBM getting it done back to live action Ohio state with a first and 10 of the 21 and Maurice Wells number 34 has come into the backfield along with Brandon Singh play action and they're going to throw two sane and the ball is underthrown meanwhile a flag has been thrown right into the middle of the offensive line and have a feeling that's going to be holding against the Buckeyes that is the call so they brought in the two tailbacks scene was lined up furthest on the left and he is the Mandate through the past two got a sense coming into this game Ohio state Wisconsin to get Brandon sane involved you know just too much speed from Washington talked about they knew the Buckeyes hadn't shown very much the first two weeks they have opened a new volume here today as far as plays that they have not used yeah and if you're getting ready if you're Northwestern who's lined up to play them next week you better be ready for more packages with number three he's a guy can flat out fly Maurice Wells stays in the lineup number 34. he also possesses some great Mobility and he gets the ball bounces it outside has 10 tatted off at about 14 yards on the play [Applause] take a look at the IBM 25 greatest players next week we'll 24-3 but Ernie Nevers he's in the College Football Hall of Fame he's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and served up a home run ball to Babe Ruth that's right during the season that babe hit 60. that's a pretty good athletic career yeah the next time you are with your buddies and you ought to toss out a a little stat that would hang up quite a few folks it's a good trivia question there second down line to make is the 10. ball is taken away intercepted by no they say heartline made the catch I beg your pardon quite sure looked like it though didn't it Ron it looked for the moment as though the ball had been picked off by Roy Lewis is in coverage there he gets the break the ball thrown back to the inside boy what a nice job by Hartline because that ball was coming out it looked like Lewis had it and Hartline yanked it away heart line of course became a fan favorite last year with his Reckless play still going all out so that's the end of the third quarter and let's take a time out as we head to the final 15 minutes it's Ohio State 17. and the Washington Huskies seventh and for the University of Washington you know there's it's fun to see that this stadium is full and even though they haven't played great here so far it's been a long time Ron since this stadium has felt this way and uh they're going to need some noise right here with Ohio State pounded on the door again well let's see that defense can stand up the final 15 minutes of play Buckeyes leading by 10 and trying to put seven more on the board Wells not going to be able to muscle his way this time he'll be knocked down for about a yard loss E.J Savannah the first man to make penetration well now you know what Washington's going to do defensively down here on the seven yard line and uh they're going to pack it in so now you've got those guys like saying you've got small back at the slot receiver your quarterback Beckman has been in a pretty good Groove here in the second half I think you spread it out a little bit and try to hit a quick slant well you see the difference in yards first half and second half it has been all Ohio State a second down throws for the End Zone incomplete no flag and it was robisky the man that they were trying to locate in the corner of the end zone now for Washington on Third and seven third and goal from the seventh they start bringing in their pass rushers but be careful of the draw your linebackers have to watch for the draw especially with the speed back more as well is in there but now they have moved him out of the backfield it's empty with the exception of Todd Beckman the quarterback got a man in the end zone and it is tipped at the very last minute by Butler I mean Butler realized whoa I got a man behind me and he had to turn into Plastic Man to make that play thank you Butler's had his struggles today young man from right across the lake in Bellevue Washington he got spun around but boy he just got enough of that because that looked like Jake Ballard was going to haul that in for seven Victorious to attempt the field ball in attempt of 29 yards pretty severe angle right here good pass and plenty of distance he's got make it 23 yards on the field goal 23 yards and the Buckeyes now extend their lead to 13 points 20-7 and just moments ago in between quarters want to show you what went on here at Husky Stadium honoring the gentleman sitting here to my rights academic All-American before being drafted by the Phoenix Cardinals he played Five Seasons in the NFL and finished his pro career in 1996 with a Seattle Seahawks Ed started announcing games on the radio in Phoenix then moved to television he worked for ABC and CBS and is now a lead color soap very proud of you and it's as I mentioned during the the quarter break it's a lot of fun to come home always but it's also fun to come home with the Home Folks honor you the way they have here today you have been able to go many places that folks didn't know exactly who you were and you know what's nice for me Ron to come back is to come back under these circumstances when the house is full yeah you know this this program was down let's not get ourselves uh they've been struggling Tyrone Willingham comes in and I think we both realize he's got single Focus he's just got such vision and it's nice to come back even though they're not playing great today Ohio State's the better team it looks like so far boy it's nice to see a packed house well this is going to come out to the 37-yard line and let's check down on the sidelines with jackaroo Jack I want to end this Love Fest that's going on upstairs I want to relate the story the three of us wrote out here this morning and it was bumper to bumper traffic and all of a sudden if you remember Ron Ed said hey see those guys over there in that purple are looking in the car to see if it's me you remember what I did I rolled the window down and I said hey Ed Cunningham's in here and they said Oh you mean the guy from Happy Days oh well you know what though I found out later that those guys were cougars from Washington State so oh gosh didn't leave it to a guy from the University of Vermont to come up with that oh Jack Lewis Rankin and tailback they're not going to hand it to him they hand it off to the return to the reverse man is Corey Williams and he is going to take it up to around the 39-yard line DeAndre Goodwin I beg your pardon number 16 rather than 18. if you're Washington you're down what amounts to two touchdowns and the way that Ohio State of course that ball out of bounds so the clock's not running but the way that Ohio state has started to eat the clock offensively I think in plays where the clock is running I think that Washington needs to start snapping it with 15 seconds or more left on the play clock if they want to get back into this thing [Applause] Lewis Rankin again being shoved back quarterback John Trojans head to Lincoln Nebraska tonight meeting with the upset-minded Corn Huskers in front of one of the toughest crowds in college football Saturday Night Football presented by Southwest Airlines on ABC at 8 Eastern Ron Franklin at Cunningham and jackaroo coming to you from Seattle Washington Husky Stadium it's the Buckeyes who trailed at halftime 7-3 on top 20-7 Locker too high on the throw and he had Russo open lockers just got to get himself settled down you know he reminds me a lot Ron of a guy that I played with here Mark Brunell yeah Mark was a fantastic athlete who happened to have a really good arm so he played quarterback but he didn't really become a pocket Pastor until later in his career here and right now Jake Locker looks like he's got to go through that process that Perfect protection guy runs a square and you got to hit that [Applause] with the kick B robisky at the 15-yard line so we'll take a timeout 12 48 left in our ball game Buckeyes by 13. we'll be right back so it's first down for the Buckeyes as they scrimmage from their own 25 and a half yard line wells will get the handoff and beanie turns it up field out across the 30 to the 31. and let's check in with Rhys Davis Rhys Ryan Tennessee had momentum against Florida down 28-20 volunteers with the ball and remember Eric ains has that injured pinky finger so he's handing off with the left hand it gets away from Mary and Foster Dustin doe scooped score 35-20 and the Gators are back in volunteer territory late in the third what age can not stay away from injury really been unlucky unbelievable Florida replacing nine guys on defense he's still playing at that level draw play Penny Wells 35 and almost to the 40-yard line he'll have the first down and I think Jim Trestle had his way this would be about an eight minute drive I'm not sure they can soak that much out of it with the the way that welds is running and with his average per carry but it just run that clock down and get ready to hop on a plane back to Columbus you know I wonder how much beanie's mother Paulette is watching today she she has a habit of not watching the play until it's over because she just wants to make sure her son Chris is okay last year against Michigan he had a 52-yard touchdown round run she had to see most of that because she realized the crowd was cheering too loud well at this time it's brand insane and who he's caught by the Jersey no gain jackaroo Ron few players have waited as long as Todd Beckman to play Washington and yet will I take that back because he actually had the opportunity to prepare for a Washington game back in 2004. now remember both these schools are on quarter periods so players are allowed to practice and do everything that they need to do and still until school starts well Beckman elected not to enroll but he was the scout team quarterback the last time Ohio State prepped for a game against Washington in fact he was voted scout player of the week that day that's right good job Jack and a quick Out Pass completed right here to Sam senbacher and he will have it to the 41-yard line and that's it and it's McDowell who is out there to make the tackle and that's a term what Beckman did is called a gray shirt which means he didn't actually enroll your clock the NCAA says your clock starts the day you take your first class well Ohio State like Washington on quarters they don't start until late September and Beckman got there and there was a couple of good quarterbacks and Justin zwick and this guy named Troy Smith so he decided you know what I'm going to sit a year out so I'll have a little more time to play at the end of my career Maurice wells in motion with counter play here the scene and same still dancing not going to make the 50-yard line it's close to the first down in the back from where the linesman across the Kelly is walking in he may have it you know this time is there to make the tackle yep in fact they're looking at the yellow line he does that you know I really thought it was a neat deal that Jim Tressel and his staff decided to bring the guys here a day early because they're not in school I really thought I mean it does help you such a long trip you don't want them to have jet lag and be ready to play but I just thought that was a nice deal for his uh for his young players to be able to come out here and experience the city well yesterday afternoon also we asked him how much time were the players given and he said you know they were given a short time to go down to the wharf watch him pitch Fish Head apparently and uh you know just to look around and to see the place they had two or three hours to do that and it probably is about all they needed for sightseeing but I'm with you that's part of the experience of being a college athlete and it lets you grow a little bit I love you there a bunch of guys on that on the team that had never even flown let alone to be the Seattle foreign [Applause] is going to be stopped for a loss of about two yards Jack let's check with you you've got more on that story yeah remember when we were talking to Jim Trussell too I love the way he told us and I was amazed he said he wasn't quite sure how many kids had never flown but he said one thing I did take a poll of all of our travel Squad and only three players on the Travel squad for Ohio State had ever been to Seattle he said I think that's kind of neat because when they're playing careers are over and someone says hey you ever been to Seattle oh yeah early on in my career that's great second down Beckman near sideline and the ball is overthrown Hartline had fallen down but he was he had fallen down actually out of bounds well Ohio state has actually been the last two trips to Washington they leave this series seven to three he seems to play quite a bit in the regular season but the last two trips oh and two and 86 they went down 40-7 and in 94 they went down 25-19 Napoleon Kaufman with 278 all-purpose yards that day so a little better trip so far for the Buckeyes in 07. third down line to make is the Washington 41-yard line draw play dwells got it plus so that is a nice twisting and turning move 14 yards on the play Donald Butler finally with a stop of Maurice Wells when your offensive line is blocking as well as Ben person is right here the Right Guard watch him get up on Donald Butler and although it's a bit of a whiff he gets up so quickly on Butler Butler's got to run underneath of him and Wells is the faster of the two Wells I should say that Maurice Wells is quicker and you just when you run underneath the block you're just not going to get there first down and it's Maurice again he will go for a short Gainer Reese Davis what do you got for us UCF getting back in the game against Texas Ron on ESPN2 Kevin Smith going in for the second time on the day and it's now 23-17 the sixth ranked team has the lead about halfway through the third again it's on ESPN2 okay Reese thanks so much well you called it when we were looking at the games over the weekend you said that's a sneaky one Central Florida is playing a little bit better a little bit better brand new stadium too built 70 000 feet it's fantastic well it's Welch again Maurice tries to spin going to throw down for a three-yard loss E.J Savannah here are the stories for today the headlines if you will of what is going on in the World of Sports Auburn loses to Mississippi State and that was in Auburn 19-14 Florida Atlantic defeated Minnesota 42-39 and Michigan leads Notre Dame 38 to nothing Mike Hart 187 yards rushing and two touchdowns well Mike Hart needed 187 rushing yards and two touchdowns after guaranteeing the victory last week so at least he's a man of his word third down Brandon sane on the draw play 40 35 ran into his own blocker came close to the first down I think if you cut it inside he not only would have had to first he might have scored well that young man has a lot of speed and people at home may be saying wow why such a conservative call on Third and long but at 20-7 on the road seven minutes left there there is well there's a couple of big game coaches in this country as good as Jim Trestle you know you've got to talk about the Pete carrolls and the Bob Stoops but boy he's tough to beat eight and three in his career at Ohio State against top 10 teams uh he just knows how to manage a game as well or better than any head coach in the country and it could be his 200th win by the way Butler made the stop now what do we have he nine tackles for him when you're talking about that list the offense five-yard penalty remains fourth down we'll talk about that list of coaches don't leave out the old ball coach for South Carolina I'm telling you now that guy yeah he could figure it out he is amazing absolutely amazing well and Bob Stoops remember yeah spent all that time and when you talked about Stoops obviously learned a lot from Hayden fry from Bill Snyder but boy he speaks glowing with Steve Spurrier now this one is pooched toward the far sideline and is going to be touchdown inside the five-yard line so let's take a timeout 20-7 Ohio State leads will be right back ESPN's college football is presented by cars.com find the right car for you cars.com and in part by Hyundai now there are more reasons to check out a new Hyundai visit hyundaiusa.com so we are back Washington takes it over they have spotted it at the five-yard line going to be their worst starting position of the day past your own complete to the nine that's Russo it was interesting talking to Tyrone Willingham about Jake Locker he really has Locker been anointed as the Savior and we were talking about it was interesting that Tyrone described it as the hero's journey Sometimes When You're Reading literature the hero is down when you meet him and he has to redeem himself by the end and he said other times he starts at the top and then he's going to falter and how's he going to come back not a great game against Ohio State so far for Jake Locker still time to save it but it's how he bounces back from these that will continue his growth as a quarterback straight ahead with the handoff out to the 11-yard line is ranking Abdallah is there to make the tackle on him it'll the amazing thing about the city of Seattle right now the two hottest athletes the two biggest names are both 19 years old Kevin Durant in basketball who was uh picked second by uh Seattle and this young man right here quarterback for the Huskies I have a feeling Kevin Durant's scholarship check is a little higher than Jake lockers if you want to go with the money after rug feed Durant 19 year old a little higher The Rocker yeah but the shoot contract alone there's 50 million I think wow short drop pass just a little bit behind the intended receiver watching Locker the other day in practice he has a tendency on these short throws the the quote unquote three-step drops to rush it out of his hand he's got a nice quick release but sometimes he just gets jumpy with that ball and it's it's affecting his accuracy well that one was well behind of Marcel Reese nothing Marcel could do about it so the Huskies are going to have to punt it away here with 525 showing on the clock the sixth time that Washington has head to punt and it's not a real good kick wobbly spiral going to be taken at the 47-yard line by small and small will get it inside the 40. let's take a time up 12 left of their ball game Buckeyes 20-7 [Applause] well I have a feeling that it is not the youngest Buckeye at the ball game today certainly very close to it uh 20-7 his ball Club is winning 5-12 left to play Beckman hands it off to Maurice Wells and he takes a pretty good shot there at a time now for the Dell Playbook and this was the play that really started to change the momentum last week against Boise State the University of Washington trying to protect the Freshman cornerback who played a lot of cover two with two safeties and McDowell off 10 yards to today they've run a couple of one-on-one coverages and on the outside robisky Beckman saw this and it became a fly route right away rabisky did a nice little stutter on the line of scrimmage the safety has no chance Wells to get over there and that's just a good read by the quarterback the receiver they're starting to really communicate well out there on the outside with the quarterback and the receivers and the dial out there against robisky again but they're going to keep this on the ground and Maurice wells will be stopped Reese Davis what do you got for us this time how many more surprises not any more surprises at least not this one in the swamp Florida 35-20 Tim Tebow to reverse little health and blue and Mark Percy Harvin Tennessee stayed home but he's like trying to catch a vapor with oven mitts he goes in 42-20 is the score early in the fourth quarter and Darren McFadden doke Walker Award winner and Heisman Trophy runner-up getting set to lead the Hogs into Tuscaloosa that's coming up next Reese our clock is running it shows 3 45 to play the Buckeyes now up by 13. they trailed by four at halftime 7-3 Beckman gonna go deep you gotta man wide open over the middle and that is Heartland 36 yards on the pass play and boy the blocking but the offensive line was sensational Washington came into this game with nine sacks and they've gotten some pressure when they Blitz but when they've rushed four they have not gotten close [Applause] heart line moving rather gingerly as he came off the field there and the extra point is good so the 3 30. left in our ball game our new score the Buckeyes well they have owned the second half 27-7 we'll be right back [Applause] There are 16 national championships between them too many great teams and memories to count too much pride to measure the top ranked USC Trojans visit the Nebraska Cornhuskers tonight at eight Eastern as ESPN on ABC presents Saturday Night Football and back here our situation boy Hartline a career-high six catches 88 yards sitting right there side by side that's quite a day yeah and then think of the guys that they had to replace Gonzalez Ted gin go first round draft picks in the NFL you're starting to see the coaches wanted to know what they had offensively I think they started to find out today and I think the pieces of the puzzle and the report card's gonna look pretty good oh nice return all the way back out to the 47 yard line take a look at game track brought to you by John Hancock well Beckman found that one on that we just Illustrated a moment ago against McDowell and then of course when you play true freshman on special teams you're going to see some turnovers Chris Wells get to know that name he's starting to figure out how to be a little more patient his offensive line played much better today than they did in the first two games and he's over 100 yards for the second game in a row well he's really a force now that pass intercepted Jenkins Picks It Off you just cannot as a quarterback when you're playing against guys like Ohio State Malcolm Jenkins all Big Ten watch the eyes of the quarterback the entire time are locked to his side of the field of course he's looking for Quentin Daniels and you just cannot with a guy like Malcolm Jenkins four interceptions last year of course he's going to be able to read the ball and that will be something that Locker just needs to work on he just cannot have his eyes on one side of the field for the entire time laurenitis with the two interceptions in the ball game shonoff will come in at quarterback well fumbled snap from Center and let's go down to jackaroo Jack yeah you were talking about the coaches for Ohio State feeling much better about their offense for me here on the sidelines today guys it was absolutely amazing to watch the maturation process it all started between plays as they watched their defense carry the game for a while but then watching the wide receivers trying to Buck up their quarterback watching the quarterback trying to glean some information from their running back Beanie Wells and to watch them begin to mature Todd Beckman has become a big 10 QB in one day well this running play is not going to go anywhere but I can tell you right now that what they have done offensively is a season high in total offense 432 yards and as as I mentioned for those of you who didn't join us in the first half they trailed at halftime 7-3 and for the number 10 team in the country you know you and I talk a lot about maybe we should wait to start ranking these teams until week three or week four because you look at Ohio State there how many questions can you have eight First Team all Big Ten performers off of the team that played for the BCS championship against Florida and listen they've done a great job recruiting Jim Tressel has a ton of guys you said in the open of the broadcast they they don't rebuild they reload I don't care you lose that many first-team All Conference got to have some games like this in Jim Trestle Circle this and said this is a where are we now type of game against a good opponent it looks as though that they well I guess they're not going to take a knee but that's Antonio Hinton ended quarterback and he's just going to take the direct snap and run and he's taking it all the way out across the 40-yard line and and a flag is down here's a reminder it's the first race in the chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship the points are reset and the drivers are refocused it's 10 greatest shootout and this is just the beginning who can jump out to an early lead and set the pace as the chase kicks off in New Hampshire the NASCAR Nextel Cup series at New Hampshire on ABC tomorrow coverage begins at one Eastern with NASCAR countdown will be sitting on the pole for that one Antonio Hinton sitting on the pole right now for Jim Trestle it was a three-quarter back battle going on through the spring in the fall Beckman won the job you think maybe knew the system a little bit better Henton just a freshman got a late start in football Antonio Hinton not allowed to play football because his mother would always forget quote unquote to sign him up for peewee football he should always let that date pass hey oh sorry honey I just I forgot to sign you up well he's just going to take it straight ahead and there's no way at this juncture with a 20-point margin that Jim Tressel is going to do anything to embarrass his uh counterpart across the way is way too much respect for Tyrone Willingham well and Coach dressel's respect for this Washington program goes way back when we were talking to him about bringing his kids to Seattle early he'd only ever been here one time before and that was to watch the Huskies during their 1990 spring practice we were awfully very we were awfully good back then he was head coach at Youngstown State his wife Carol is actually Don James is actually Jim and Dick trestle's cousin but he came out to watch the Huskies and that's the only time he had ever been here so there's a long-standing tradition of respect that The Trestle family has for the Washington program I loved it this afternoon before the ball came started coach James came out didn't have on a husky shirt he met on the Kent Stage yeah of course all those wins at Youngstown State he's starting to lock him down here at Ohio State 200 wins about to go in the books for Jim Trestle the kick is going to go out of bounds here's that shot I was talking about and we we commented up here and said hey isn't that a Kent State shirt that uh the coach is wearing and uh it is you can't see it from there because of the sweater draped around his neck but well it's a husky sweater and a Kent State it's Don James on the left golf shirt of course Don James from the state of Ohio got his head coaching start at Kent State and came from there to replace Jim Owens here at the University of Washington but uh a lot of great coaches obviously coming out of that area of the country including Mr Trestle well I'm glad we came up here to uh to do this ball game I have not been to Seattle that many times but the Great Northwest Mother Nature did a wonderful job up here now as soon as his play is over I got a quick story to tell you Carl Bonnell has come into the ball game and quarterback and we'll throw one first down got a man wide open and has it complete at the 30. stepping out of bounds is Corey Williams this past spring and had an opportunity a friend of mine down in southern Washington invited me to come up to go Smallmouth fishing and we went on the Columbia River and Ed I'm not sure have enjoyed anything so much any more than that in my life absolutely gorgeous country waterfalls coming out of the side of mountains and with a heavy just really it was a terrific trip first time I had salmon was it had been caught about an hour and a half before he threw it on the grill attorney brother of mine literally walked up from the docks after getting off the boat with his father and we grilled it right there pass is incomplete it was trapped and with this win today two minutes showing on the clock and a 20-point margin it's going to be the 200th win for Jim Trussell you know it's amazing when he was hired took over in 2001. congratulations well earned but when you look at how many guys have gotten 200 wins in their career and he fits right in there right and as he should right after what he is and just before Pop Warner that's that's an amazing group he's just joined [Applause] and he's going to be dragged down and that's Larry Grant who will take Bunnell to the turf and with that this clock is going to run down closer to one minute left in the ball game at a really interesting first half and in fact Washington scored with the two seconds showing on the clock on a pass play to uh to Russo but then in the second half Ohio state has come out and really has been focused and intense you flipped aside the head coaches go from Jim Trestle over to Tyrone Willingham I think he learned well first of all they get to do a lot of coaching with their Young quarterback listen the the schedule this year for Washington absolutely brutal three of their first five opponents were in BCS bowl games last year they go to UCLA then USC then thankfully get a week off and then Arizona State and Oregon it is absolutely brutal and I think that uh now that lock is out I'm sure he's already on the phone upstairs talking about what they saw but there's a lot of coaching that can go on Improvement and you know they've got it well that's Reese Marcel Reese and he's loose at the 10 and down to around the seven yard line here's that schedule you were talking about Ed well you started sir Syracuse and nobody really knew if Syracuse was going to be any good but you still have to go on the road then you play Boise State who had won 14 in a row they put an end to that now they go to UCLA the number 11 team in the country then host USC and listen we saw what Oregon did against Michigan over 600 yards and Arizona State people in this part of the country know that Dennis Erickson can coach Arizona State's going to be awfully good by that time of the year quick pass over the middle and the slant is knocked down by spitler and spitler may have grabbed him by the arm away from the hand he knocked the pass down with I think that's the reason for the penalty marker pass interference in The End Zone by rule the ball be played first down at the two yard line you know it's nice to see Carl Bunnell get some time here fifth year senior went through a very difficult transfer from Washington state had an awful awful left shoulder Dina last year that they completely had to rebuild played and won the Washington State game with one shoulder which really started some momentum into this season and if it weren't for Jake Locker he'd be the lock-in starter here for the Huskies Rankin gets the handoff and he will walk it into the end zone Paul Homer the fullback with the lead block and the Huskies get on the board here late in the contest with 58 seconds showing on the clock [Applause] Perkins will attempt the extra point trying to make it a 13-point ball game 27-14 and he does Reese Davis let's check back with you [Music] Ryan coming up in a matter of moments from Tuscaloosa that's the other half of the hog dynamic duo and Nick Saban Spears to kick returns of Felix Jones Arkansas and Alabama from Bryant Denny coming up okay they'll tell you Mr Jones out of Tulsa Booker T Washington last year when we saw against Tennessee he was averaging about eight yards per try and we all know how good McFadden is but you know Jones brings you a different gear that's really a dynamic duo and it's interesting I don't blame him I'd run the same offense they're running isn't it unbelievable that at one point last year it looks like Washington's lining up for an onside kick here people were complaining that they were running the ball too much you know there's all that humble balloon with the Mustang family and everything it's like they went to the SEC Championship with two of the best running backs in the country what are you watching oh my 58 seconds showing on the stadium clock man is the man who will execute the onside kick on the way and it is caught and brought down by Ohio State and it's heart line well we got a big night coming up that is for sure of course Michigan Notre Dame became a runaway SC Nebraska on ESPN 8 o'clock Eastern in Georgia Tech against Boston College that's it will be a really good football game Arkansas against Alabama next up on ESPN none of those are mullets no and you know that Boston College I I'm right with you Jeff jagadinski goes in there he was a an assistant his entire career and they really put it on NC State when Tom O'Brien came home last weekend he's got a veteran quarterback all the difference in the world all the difference in the world Brandon sane gets the handoff and he will be stopped inside the 40 and now they only have to run about one more play Washington is calling a timeout gives us a quick opportunity to thank the wonderful people here at the University of Washington they really have rolled out the carpet for us and made things extremely easy with Willingham and all his staff just super cooperation and we wish them the very best and for this gentleman here we will be in Columbus this coming week for the conference opener against Northwestern go back to when we talked to Tyrone Willingham and we saw that shot of Don James and Jim dressel and Tyrone Willingham a lot of people in these parts are very happy that they got what they call a young Don James now as the head coach it's a single purpose here a single vision and I know today was a tough one for Tyrone willingham's troops but he doesn't allow weakness in any part of the program academics out in the community he said if you have a soft spot in your program young kids will find it it's just like your household if the mom lets you stab a little later you're going to go to Mom and ask to stay out later and Tyrone Willingham and his staff have really locked things down here and it's exactly what this program needed well he's a quality guy and we we wish them well the rest of the way as as you pointed out it's a tough schedule Hinton continues to run the Buckeyes at quarterback and this probably will be his last snap as the clock is now to 12 down to 11. and they'll go straight ahead with the carry sane and he's going to bounce it outside and he's going to take it into the end zone with one second showing on the clock 37 yards foreign piling it on as the clock runs out that was just a normal Run play trying to run out the clock but we heard about him all week and Brandon saying has amazing speed so the clock has run out do not have to kick the extra point in college game is over and you see the two head coaches meeting the middle of the field that we've mentioned several times during the contest how much respect they have for each other our final score is the Buckeyes 33 at Washington 14. for more in today's game two to ESPN news for a post game extra Fred Cunningham and Jackal root I'm Ron Franklin saying so long from Seattle this has been a presentation of ESPN the worldwide leader in sports now let's join Rhys Davis Lou Holmes and Mark May back in the studio all right Ryan a potential major upset brewing in ucf's new stadium the University of Central Florida against Texas Kyle Israel going in early in the fourth quarter and the golden knights of George O'Leary with a 24-23 lead game is on ESPN2 as number six is in trouble in front of a sellout crowd in the new stadium in Orlando 24-23 will continue to keep an eye on it as Texas has flirted with disaster for the entire season they are down by one to Central Florida right now we'll keep an eye on Texas Floyd right now time to go to Tuscaloosa the SEC West showdown between Arkansas and Alabama let's go to T-Town now [Applause]
