[Applause] [Music] welcome to Vienna I'm going to be having a meet up here at Cafe Central in about an hour but before that happens I wanted to have a chat uh to you guys just give you an update on what's going on um yeah so I am going to try to make this a one take Wonder uh I'm not going to stop recording for anything really so we'll see if I can talk about the things that are on my mind right now I wanted to talk about an issue called self-efficacy a lot of people are familiar with the term self-esteem right it's the idea there people are look at that funny self-esteem is this idea about you know how you see yourself how you know capable you think you are how happy you are with yourself but self-efficacy is something kind of different and it's rather important it's how you perceive your ability to accomplish something so you know I have a certain self-efficacy about my ability to shoot this one video in one take um or to have a a useful meet up here in Vienna or you know to take on some career I think self-efficacy is really important when it comes to careers I've been getting a fair few emails recently where uh people are asking me about you know how to make YouTube videos or getting into science communication or do something in physics or perform a particular experiment and the thing that troubles me about these emails is well for one thing I just don't have time to reply to all of them but the other is that was the whole point of my learned helplessness video was that you can't really just ask other people to help get you there I mean I'm sure they could if they had infinite amount of time but you know people don't have that and also the really valuable experience is figuring out how to do it on your own and I think one of the really important things is you got to have self-efficacy you've got to have the belief that you can do it and you can uh you know accomplish the task um successfully so I mean that was kind of the point of the learn helplessness video and yet I seem to get a lot of emails from people about the Learned helplessness video saying Hey can you help me and that was the whole point was like people can't help you I can't I mean I can try and I you know do on as many occasions as as possible but but really I I can't do it on bulk and the point of being successful or in order to be successful you need to gain that self-efficacy yourself and feel like you can you can accomplish it by yourself even when you don't know what to do I was thinking about this and why you know a lot of actors and actresses um Offspring go on to be actors and actresses and a lot of doctors Offspring go on to be doctors and a lot of professors progyny become professors and so so forth I mean it it kind of makes sense and there's a number of reasons for it uh one of them is you know connections another is social standing another is resources I get that there's a lot of really practical reasons I get that there's a lot of really practical reasons why you know uh a kid will fall in their parents following in their parents' footsteps with their choice of career but I think one of the major reasons that we might often Overlook is this concept of self-efficacy when you are around people your whole life who are capable of doing a thing like being a doctor or being an actor or a lawyer or you know anything a professor it makes you feel more confident that you can do it too because um you know that will give you the kind of self-efficacy like if these guys can do it um so can I I've kind of noticed that with friends I've had who you know see me making YouTube videos and then they start making YouTube videos which kind of makes sense I mean it gives them the selfefficacy cuz they know you know how disorganized I am and yet I still somehow seem to make it work this is I believe me Kaylor Platz I think that's what this place is called um it's a very nice building there's some nice art here nice music these people think I'm crazy because I'm filming myself but you know such as YouTube life right okay so self efficacy I think it is really really important um selfefficacy is is really important and developing your own self-efficacy to do the things that you want to do is super important lately I've been seeing a kind of self-efficacy develop in the world that I'm not happy about and that is kind of terrorist selfefficacy I think there was a time a while ago when you know people wouldn't have just committed acts of Terror on their own um but now you know when I saw the events happening in Paris and how much attention they got and you know how much it just seems like you can really make an impact on the world and become headline news uh everywhere around the globe just by you know causing a real havoc and it's kind of like I think a quote from a John Green Book where he says you know people are so intent on making their on the world they don't care if it's a scar and I think that the recent rash of sort of terrorism incidents really looks to me that way because of all the attention on social media because of the way that we're all talking about it because we're all talking about it it encourages other people to think oh yeah I can do that too if they're disillusioned with their lives it kind of gives them that self-efficacy to go out there and really you know commit some atrocities that are awful so that is when self-efficacy is not so great and in that case I don't know how we respond because I get that there is a lot of hate out there I get that um you know the things that have been done are absolutely awful and I think the natural reaction is to get mad and to really want to hit back but that is kind of obviously the worst thing that you could do because that is just going to lead to more of this so I'm not sure what the world is going to do right now but I highly suspect that you know we haven't seen the last of this and and really the way social media and the news media is working right now is such that it's just going to lead to more and more of these events and the more people that really hate and you know promote kind of hate speech and really get in inflamed by this and just I mean it just makes the whole thing worse and so I don't know what the solution to it is um but uh self-efficacy is is a real important piece whether it's you developing self-efficacy to do the things that you want to accomplish or whether it's the selfefficacy of terrorists who think now I can do do that too and I can be effective and I can be successful at that I think somehow we need to break that self-efficacy of them and show that that is really not what you know what the world listens to in a couple days I'm heading to Oslo I will be there for the Nobel uh Peace Prize ceremony and concert I will be hosting a live stream um so I'll try to post some details about that be posting things on social media around that but um I think now more than ever we need to think about peace which is you know for me something that I've never really thought much about because it's such a grand big concept that feels really impersonal and I don't know it just seems like one of those Pie in the Sky aspirations that's you know how can you really create peace in the world but I think now more than ever we need to actually think about it and I don't know start taking some action because without it I'm concerned about the direction that the world is heading in so I'd like to be part of the solution and I hope you will join me so uh that was my one take Wonder Walk Around Vienna I hope you're all well and I wish you happy holidays what
