the sega dreamcast a system that upon release was the world's most powerful game console this device was like no platform before it offering up the most technically impressive gameplay that gamers had seen as of yet at launch the dreamcast was in a different league to its competition with the system's most powerful specs and smooth graphics putting both the sony playstation and nintendo 64 to shame as amazing as the start to life was for the sega dreamcast the sony playstation 2 with its dvds and almost perfect marketing would hugely hamper the dreamcast's demand pair that with microsoft entering the console market with their almost endlessly deep pockets in 2001 sega would sensibly exit the console arena while this is the case then why 14 years later in 2015 was it trending on facebook of all places that the dreamcast 2 was coming out and on the way hindsight now shows us that this certainly never happened but was this purely just all fake news or was there an element of truth to any of this let's find out i am lazy decade and this is the unbelievably stupid story of the sega dreamcast 2. ever since the day sega closed the door on the home market in 2001 many have mourned the loss of sega as a competing brand within the hardware industry in modern times many retro gamers dream of a follow-up to the dreamcast no matter how unlikely the chances of this actually ever happening is in reality despite the limited chances of something like this actually happening this did not prevent huge swaves of facebook users from spreading the news that a dreamcast 2 was apparently on the way in fact so many people bought into and promoted this story that dreamcast 2 would become a top item on facebook's trending topic feature this hype appears to have been generated by several websites this would include an article from the far right multi-language newspaper and media company affiliated with the falun gong new religious movement known as the epoch times who would post a headline dreamcast 2 reportedly under development could be a pc console hybrid further to this a website known as cinema blend who focus on movies tv shows games and celebrity gossip would add to the speculation with a headline stating the dreamcast 2 wants to answer pc gamers wishes i mean if you stumble across news on facebook it has to be true right if these headlines weren't enough to make the wonderful posters of facebook believe in the dreamcast 2. the way the articles have been written certainly would have helped cinema blend would write there's a possibility of a new console coming from sega that sounds like a pipe dream and something far off from reality but it's actually the truth there's a project making a lot of headway called project dream which is aimed at bringing a pc style dreamcast 2 console to the market patrick lawson a member of the sega dreamcast 2 super group aimed at reviving the dreamcast brand with some help of sega of japan interns and independent oem designers has been making some serious progress with the project the plan is that it will be a direct competitor to things like the steam machines or dedicated gaming rigs offered by companies like cyberpower and alienware the article goes on to run through the specs of this device and more information such as it will run an intel core i5 haswell and will be designed to play sega games right off the hard drive after being digitally installed the point of the system will be to play old and new sega titles on hdmi compatible devices with hd upscaling capabilities in fact they go into as much detail as even adding the whole point is to put sega back into the running as a viable console competitor the system will have a similar shell as the original dreamcast but modified and updated for today's standards a mock-up is what's in the main image of this article this system will also have a wireless controller just like the xbox one and ps4 or the wii use pro controllers so was it any truth to this or was fake news being pushed on facebook well it doesn't take much digging to learn that the sega dreamcast 2 super group which the journalist mentions in this article was no more than a dreamcast fan group with less than 900 members so there are misleading points placed throughout the write-up to be fair to the person who wrote this though for those who have made the effort to read the entire thing it does state right at the end of the article that all of this simply started through a petition through change.org when a gentleman named ben plato from melbourne australia made the effort to gain 22 000 signatures to present to sega to try to get them to release a revised model of the dreamcast with a digital library the piece concludes that the group involved even have plans to host a kickstarter campaign to get the hardware and designs finalized but again reading this article it all still sounds very ridiculous to me so let's dig deeper the real story suggests that the so-called sega dreamcast ii supergroup's real name was simply dreamcast revival after all if you have the most basic grasp of gaming history you would quickly realize that the name the sega dreamcast 2 is the most ridiculous name for a console ever as the general rule was that sega would come up with a new name for their console each generation and numbers would generally be affixed to consoles if old hardware was given different form factors see the master system 2 the mega drive 2 and the sega mega cd2 to see absolute proof of this so the name dreamcast 2 certainly seems to have been made up simply for clicks on misleading articles patrick lawson who we mentioned very briefly earlier in this video would speak to several websites about the facebook group he was a part of which would lead to multiple fake news headlines and facebook users thinking sega were making a new console so the name the dreamcast 2 was definitely made up for clicks but what about the rest of the story lawson would clarify to the gaming press that even he did not know where the dreamcast 2 name had popped up from other than potentially through falsehoods that have been created through facebook's trending topic algorithm as for the petition that the group posted it was for a completely new console with wi-fi for wireless controllers a 500 gig hard drive a gd rom drive hdmi output and the ability to up scale games in 720p or 1080p the chinese whispers claiming it to be the dreamcast 2 seem to have spread from the fact that their petitions state that they want the console to connect to a hypothetical dreamcast classic store that would allow for digital downloads elsewhere lawson would state that the truth was he and the rest of the group were trying to recruit backers so that they could raise a million dollars to help fund a kickstarter so that they can raise a proposal to sega of japan ben plato a sega fan who worked on the petition with lawson would regularly post updates on his change.org competition on the 9th of december 2015 one of these would include that an innovative hardware manufacturer with crazy coders and designers had recently approached him to design and manufacture their new system all they needed to do now was get a green light from sega he concluded that he is planning the proposal to sega right now damn crazy kids with their crazy dreams chris powell of seganerds.com speculated that this was the update that would lead to all the fake news being spread through facebook and all of the misleading articles about the petition being posted moving on from this a website would be created known as project dream which reportedly did not consist of much but wanted visitors to sign up for newsletters with a key feature being a countdown ending on the 31st of december of that year later lawson would claim the team had two ideas for proposals one for sega to begin manufacturing apc dreamcast hybrids another which was an ultra powerful console that could also run next generation sega developed games why does this proposal make me think of when ali g said that sony stole his idea for the playstation 2 because he thought of it first whilst playing the playstation the methods behind this madness apparently comes from the fact that the team felt sega could pull this off due to still being an arcade manufacturer lawson stated part of the magic about sega is that being primarily an arcade amusement company they have the resources and ability to sell a home consumer product at far better price points than sony nintendo and microsoft because they have never built consoles from scratch and instead use arcade machine parts and accessories we have sega of japan interns involved they will present the ideas to sega of japan next quarter sega will revive its old ips kotaku would report that while lawson didn't want to go into exact specs one proposal they planned to make to sega was called ring edge zero after the ring edge arcade board we chose at the ring name because people would immediately know who licensed and manufactured it by hearing that word the sega ring edge is not something we have ever mentioned on here before so what was he talking about here well the ring edge is a sega arcade board from 2009 it's based on pc architecture using a microsoft windows operating system this technology was used in the arcade board in an attempt to encourage third-party companies to produce arcade games for these systems it was designed to be cheaper and streamlined so at least you could see where lawson was trying to come from speaking of lawson who has turned into one of the focal points in today's tale it is said that he would even use the fact that yujinaka accepted his facebook friend request to show how much support he was getting for his group's idea lawson's boasting and public wild ideas would not last for much longer though as ultimately project stream would decide to boot him from their team due to placing him as the key reason as to why so much fake news had spread around what they were trying to achieve through his big mouth and wild claims bertie wiseman another member of the group would state project dream is not dreamcast 2 but a campaign to get sega into the game console market again plato would add and if everything goes according to plan then the next step would be to convince sega to make the real dreamcasts too so hang on a minute their long-term plan was to release a sega dreamcast 2 all along ali g would be so proud of this inventive idea anyone want to invest in the ice cream glove in further regards to the fake news the pair states we did manage to track down the person who had been stating a lot of false things about the project dream campaign we actually banned him from the project entirely i mean this is merely a fan base project so nothing is set in stone concrete or moving forward just yet wiseman will go on to state that despite working on the project the chances of sega going ahead with a new console would be very unlikely he goes on to say we would like project dream to take off big time and be built and backed by sega fans regardless of whether it gets sega's endorsement or not plato concludes with it should not be treated as a joke but should be treated as something that's a work in progress for the best possible outcome for a dedicated dc gaming rig it needs to stop being considered as a dreamcast 2. it's the return of an awesome short-lived console but far improved in june of 2016 though project stream would be officially shut down the project stream facebook group posted in a statement the project has been taken offline this is due to a schism within the team caused by inefficient and amateurish conduct resulting in members being removed and others leaving the team in light of such unprofessional behaviour and an embarrassing lack of progress seasoned members of the gaming industry have chosen to distance themselves from the project i too am stepping away from the project tom on dreamcast junkyard.co.uk would state that a contact close to the source would confirm there had been various members resorting to infighting and conflicts of direction this led to the closure of the project so i am lazy decade and that was the very stupid story of the sega dreamcast 2. and if you probably takes a good sort of uh 10 hours per video so bear in mind that we create between us between 16 and 20 documentaries per month is a good sort of over 100 hours per week so it really is a huge
