Okay, Pelican Point, at the lighthouse. We've seen a big seal with a very big hook and weight in his mouth. It's definitely going right through his lip. Wally, you can follow with the toolbox actually. I'll bring the car. Okay, yeah. Actually better. Stop running,
you're going to hurt yourself! In you go! In you go! The hook is in. Keep calm! Keep calm! Snoek hook, yeah. From what I could see, it went right through,
so we can cut the end off. Definitely bolt cutter. Do you want me replace you? Yeah, I want to work on the head. Oh, Wally, you didn't see the emails.
We're getting straps with some buckles, yeah. Nice, man! 50 mm wide straps, sent to us from Germany! Okay, now you guys have to be strong and brave! I don't like the fact that he's so calm right now. Yeah. I should have a good grip here. Kat, maybe you can grab that pole. I'm very scared of one of us
getting clocked in the head with that thing. Thank you! We got all our awesome new hook extraction tools! If you can work like that... Yeah, I'm not going to cover his eyes. You stay here! Okay, first, I'm going to separate
the hook from the line. Wally, careful! I make sure there's not his tongue
or something in the background. Here we go!
See? It was not that bad! There was not a long tag on that. I'd like to get the rest of that hook.
It must be down there somewhere. Just to make sure it didn't go in his mouth. Here, here, here.
In front of him. In front of him. Yeah, exactly where you are. Okay, excellent! Was there another line on him? No, it was a short tag, a very short tag. We've got other ropes, have we? Yeah. Kat, can you look in the back of the pickup
for another one of these? Okay, he's getting ready. Yes! We need to stand clear
because we don't know where he's going to go now. Go around, yeah! It's in his fur. Come forward a bit first. Let's try and close it. Come to me. We go backwards if you want. Backwards? Yeah, we might was well! You can't believe your luck, can you? Another snoek hook, right through the lip. Luckily, we've got some very cool new tools! Standard snoek hook.
This hook has already been bent already. By the lip. Good practice to cut off the barb on that hook
but it still wasn't coming out on its own. Cool! Now, we were actually here to get a much bigger seal. He's just over the ridge down there. So we are now going to hop straight into that chase. We actually just saw this one
as we were getting ready for a different one. We're going for the big guy. Okay, he's down there on the bottom,
so you're going to have to drop us next to him. The huge one.
On the beach. Over the ridge. We're going to go down
on the beach in front of him. In front of him? Okay.
Do you want to be on the left side? You want to be on the right, eh? Yeah. It's fine. Go on his inside. Go on the beach. Come on! Come on! Come on! Run past. Run past. Go! Go!
To the water! Go to the water! Go to the water! Here we go! It would be nice to secure with the rope
because it's quite high. Here, right here. But the tag is definitely on the bottom. Watch the mouth, eh, Wally? His head's far back.
Your arm is on the tip of the jaw. Very thin, little line but a lot of damage. Careful. Excellent. Ropes? Yeah, they're right there. The other zip is an issue, the one that has been repaired. Put it on the eye rather. Yeah. Okay, he's coming out the back. Here we go!
No, go for Wally! For Wally? Off he goes.
Oh, it's a really bad cut on his neck! A thin, stupid, little piece of fishing line
causing so much damage to the poor guy. You would have also seen on the drive-in,
now we do have quite a few dead, prematurely-born pups in the area. It is normal for this time of the year. Last year, we had a very big die-off event
where we had over 15 000 pups dying in this area, or being prematurely born. This year, the numbers are a lot better. To give you some sort of perspective,
we've been counting dead pups per 100 meters and the numbers are less than an eighth of
what they were for the same time frame last year. All these pups that you do see dead
have actually been dead for a while, they're not fresh and we do believe that
things are turning at the moment for the better. So we're really happy about that. Guys, come check here! A seal that has died from a line around its neck. Ah man, it's terrible! Judging by all the fur falling off its skin... Normally, it's an indicator when they die out at sea,
so it probably died far at sea and washed out dead already.
