Sea Otter Pups Learn to Groom!

Grooming for sea otters is incredibly important because most marine mammals have two to three inches of blubber, at least, surrounding their whole body and that's how they stay warm. Sea otters don't have that at all, so they rely solely on their dense fur and they need to make sure that that fur stays waterproof, that it doesn't mat and if it does mat, they can get hypothermia very easily. So while they're growing up sea otter, we have to help them with grooming. You know, they don't just come out knowing that they need to take care of their fur. So in their younger stages, we actually groom their fur for them. Drying it off, brushing it, making sure that there's no mats forming. And so to encourage them grooming, what we do is if they start grooming a certain spot of their body, we make sure to let them groom that and we work in a different area.
