I saw the Jolly Roger flying or piqued my interest so I went over and I asked somebody what is this it's a very scary looking sticker and they tell me oh this is Sea Shepherd they finally the wedding legal fishing I'm adorable that's kind of interesting [Music] pirates yeah pirates well you know the fire thing was kind of adopted because we're called pirates for so long but we're really not pirate the world is changing our tactics are changing now we are working a lot together with government it's about time for them to wake up like I'm sure they've all seen what's happened in Europe our fish is gone the Atlantic is empty the cod collapse there is just nothing to catch and now the European fleet is here East Africa is already in a very bad state like the mega trawlers have been there they still are just emptying the oceans if you look at the situation in Somalia the Pirates can be argued that they used to be fishermen but then foreign trawlers came took the fish they have no income so I think it's just common sense that the countries are waking up [Music] [Music] Sepahan corner with animals proceeded upon dr. Halstead circumstances so Lynette de nos tamagoyaki rostrum and banker domain Maritim Gabbana and practical teaching at which Obie Bennett Cerf a la pêche pcs nor declare another la madre de noche para we have been maritima gautama repair services virtually a [Music] yes whatever I think that's a lot of humanity a single privacy and they come on board we check the chamber to make sure there is no bullet in the chamber so when they are told they are safe there is no bullet and then when we give them we check the chamber again and when they come back we check the chamber so we make sure that when that's told there is no bullet in it anymore and [Music] [Music] history of the bless also 1950 she was billed as a whaling ship and the harpooning the accused to be over here this would be where the harp or slits on and I think that's the sweetest thing it used to kill whales now it's protecting them [Music] Sea Shepherd defending the whales in the Southern Ocean so YouTube anis gray let's go down there to the whales and sea shiver was the only one who went down there the most impressive story was how the Sea Shepherd's stood up to that and got in between you know the harpoon ships and the processing ships and prevented him from being able to transfer any whales onto the processing show I've been there in the small-boat snaps to the harpoon ships and it's yeah it's scary it's different but then again throwing paint bombs versus physically stopping illegal fishing vessels taking them out of the action you save millions hundreds of thousands of lives [Music] we would get very very close to the whaling fleet and we would basically brought them from transferring that whales we would physically stop them with putting defensive lines into the water throwing stink bombs into their decks throwing paint into them to symbolize the bloody business that they are doing I think the most impressing the campaign called zero tolerance this is the Nisshin Maru the wearing factory that's all factory ship fuel tanker and to come together they need to get you and this is what we did for five days one of our ship was here in between our interest was to stop this retooling operation because if they cannot help you they won't be able to continue wailing so refuel let's see two ships need to come together like this so the Nisshin Maru tried to come alongside the fuel tanker and we had our ships go there in between them to stop them from physically touching for five days we were stopping it that situation that really really tense Nisshin Maru was shooting water down departures in general so the Bob Barker lost all steering looked all engines it started the key like this Bob Barker's captained the extremely brave Peter hammarstedt for shouting Mayday Mayday Mayday Bob Barker stop about to stop I have no engines and only then the Nisshin Maru pulled away and before that they had already crushed the main masts of the Bob Barker crush the Halliday so that the book Barker thank God him didn't sink buddy versus yeah it was very very close now after this we had the injunction come against our ships that we cannot go 500 metres close to there this is an injunction from and US Court and that's the weird thing how can a US Court have jurisdiction in international waters to a crew that it's international to a ship that's like the Netherlands but still we are respecting this injunction cuz we do not engage in illegal activities this flag at the moment we don't use it in Africa because there is a piracy situation and it's just not very tactful and politically correct to fly a pirate flag of course part of me always looks back to these days and the successes that we had like zero tolerance saved the life of 700 whales of course you always look back to it to the people who you work with to these accomplishments and think ah that was nice but then I'm also extremely happy with the directions either but hashtagging because for me personally I you you fishing and overfishing has been my thing I've always hoped like I hope it would do more for the fish because the fish they don't scream when they die and nobody knows what's going on with them like they are the underlings of the planet in a way so for me to see this collaboration with governments putting more work into protection of fish it's just a dream come true really [Music] [Music] so we're still at the refrigerated partnership under surveillance this morning we're gonna watch it for today didn't move last night because it starts to move again we'll go ahead with otherwise we plan on working it around up to five seconds we have an interesting ship here that looks like it's a research ship mm-hmm and it's been drifting out here for days normally you would expect the freezer ship to go from the port to the port it's going as quickly as possible unload the frozen food and return but just to sit offshore with a bunch of frozen food it's a bit strange it's just suspicious it's a funny yes I'll go seeds I predict now leave her where they have the cargo actually that impact of the but then it can also carry container supposin card oh yeah [Music] thank you because your refrigerated cargo ship inside the cabin easy easy and transmissions friendship and if this is illegal within the easy so we just want to inspect to make sure your freezers empty that's all it's under alone to the game you got reduce it calculate even if the second material sample took his teeth preferred Atlanta do tones about them on the request is all have to talk okay chief no this is some Java some the larger one plugs are you know Molly can you ask the pub if we have an idea of how many crew their office [Music] Japanese Navy sailors just went on both vessels secure the vessel and now they gave us permission to send the issue inspectors to proceed with the dude Latvia awesome [Music] but you tell him for ya [Music] South Africa its last double was frozen fish it doesn't show Ireland because it already was now have to treat them in plea impulse for preparation for next album his vessel did not make him turn signal operation from its connection from your naval ship sacred any prohibited transit inoculation but believe me we saw his screen in open sea this is real this is not possible meet different cargo gear tarik understand the delicate this - Derrick is two wires groundshare one wires just one demon plaintiff team appointed this problem it is not possible to work charge drifting in safe position take your time came in common because in doermann not possible for this vessel state on encourage because too much wave and swell here what I'll concede forgiven they gather fish songs what Elsa did not convince you you'd open under that don't know Thank You Leslie it's all empty now auntie no smell of fish [Music] so it's it's quite different then it's it's nice to have the government on board to be able to actually stop the the fish and inspect what's going on so it's a different experience but it's a good yeah usually that's the case yeah usually we go to like the Pharaohs and they say get out you know or yeah that that place they don't like us very much at all in the Pharaohs because we don't want them to kill the pilot whales and so you know they have this long tradition of driving the pilot whales with their small boats and driving them up onto the beach and killing them on the beach and so we've done there and interfered with the Hutt's there which is you know is there's a whole layers of legal issues there because it is illegal for the EU your HUD whales and the Pharaohs are obsessively part that you but they planned in there not they tried in years past to pass laws against us and they kept getting they weren't they the way they were worded they wouldn't enforce them so I think believe this year they they have succeeded in keeping us from going there I know the ships can't go in I don't know if individuals want now how that would work out but we're not going there on a campaign this year because of that because of the prohibition there and then we have other issues now that we're tackling like this illegal fishing which is a huge problem all over the world if you want to eat tuna for example you just go to a supermarket buy a can of tuna open it and you enjoy it because of like the taste but when you see how its catch you start to think about it this big fishing boats called Persinger's fish they are already in a big trap we cannot go out but I still plytix play several hundred meters and then so to say 'no boat starts to pull in the nets and the net the circle is getting tighter and tighter fish are squeezed out like a lemon and in this moment sassy really turns red full of blood is just a sea of blood in other nets it's called the scoop with a metal ring just go they go into the big net and scoop out the fish one time we have been around is pro saleable we counted 15 scoops when you say 520 thought so that's one catch it's 75 tons of tuna and they do it several times a day almost every day with a big fleet so now you get an idea why the ocean is over fished it's lettuce sim that our friend uh stopped enough so I guess they they should then and go to catch petty turn around and here you can see the two simple fun fish - should that into a circle it could be an interesting target for us yes resting have dinner before forever and evening much of a girl this is agony is Navy patrol we are going to board you for a routine mystery suspect earlier today in about half an hour over do you have any weapons or guns on board over no firearm damn floor for example the Mediterranean is a very over fish in this region there has been a lot of tuna fishing for the European industrial personal fleet they have been fishing here quite extensively since the 1950s as well so that has also led to the fact that there is not so much tuna left so that is why Gabon and other nations in this region are doing these inspections to make sure that they have the amount of catch on board that they are reporting [Music] so like you see today preschool 15 yeah tons fat set is rocked hey 10 tons so yellowfin ate and scripture so about you fish from the eighties yeah any bike oh yeah charge but you really like so far a line next pie charts on the whole trip in this work yeah yeah have you reported this bycatch my main goal will be about bycatch and the iuu they illegal unregulated and unreported fishing that is happening in the West African region and because it is estimated that between 11 and 26 million tons of fish is being caught illegally 7.3 million tons fish are being discarded as bycatch annually it's just being killed without being targeted here you can see the net in the net you can see a lot of dead sharks because the problem with the sharks is since they are lacking a swim bladder when they lift up the net already before the net is on the deck the Sharks died because of lack of oxygen because they do not have a swim bladder so if they don't move they will die immunity last year when we were here in Gabon we also had several cases of whale sharks getting caught in the net with the percenters so on several occasions we had to cut up the net to be able to save the whale sharks and releases from the entanglement in the net and that is also a beautiful feeling when you see the whale shark swimming away from the net [Music] [Music] [Music] I'll continue with this crabbing [Music] I fell in love with the shark when I was fierce also it's a long story of sharks for me the most difficult and then pursuit was when I saw my first day Chuck for the first patrol it was all about because I didn't see shark dead before so it was the third time ahead so it was everybody but my motivation was stronger after that because I knew that I wanted to be there again and continued I'll have a look at it [Music] what I wanted to do is help you know that you're helping the world be a bit better so I would say that that would be to me one of the things that has impressed me the most is how you get the energy from wherever you need to get it pretty good I wanted to do something for Earth when I came on board it was my first time at sea it was my first time in the galley as well so I had a lot to learn this is the seventh campaign I just love it I just love it I love being on this show I love the crew way I just loved that the whole thing and being a CI I feel more at home on a ship at sea than I do on land no after I spent 45 years in the Navy I retired in summer 2016 so one year ago and after a while of that missing going at sea but I didn't want to just go at sea for fun because I do have a sailing boat but I needed a mission to whale in the air completely [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] subnetting and wood it's called AFA D of the segregation difference and normally these are attached to a platforms that float in the water and then the F ad trail suddenly borer attracting fish this one does not have a float in it so it's just floating freely which is an entanglement risk for whales and obviously for ships because now it's stuck to our ship and of course it's rubbish that these states we cannot leave it in the ocean because may be sharp or fish or don't think it entangle there or another vessel it will go into the propeller [Music] then it goes further under what about getting one set of scuba [Music] the boat is here [Music] [Music] but I think these two are two different devices that this black float is from a local fisherman's net because I'm seeing this before a lot in the coast of Africa usually they would have a little net attached to that but now we are thirty miles away from the coast and the local wooden boats they don't really come this far so it's probably being torn out by a storm or strong winds or tide and sister drifted far out and this fa D is definitely for a per sailor so we've got very lucky that it didn't get stuck in our propeller or any other vital parts of the ship or it wasn't a shark or a dolphin or away and getting stuck a little adventure for the evening exactly [Music] most of our people are volunteers and dinner at lunch you'll see everybody here captain next to a daycare next to a second pool playing cards and of course if we are willing to protect the whales the Sharks the dolphins the fish we don't want them to be killed why would we eat animal products here all of our ships the whole fleet we now have 10 ships all of them are vegans and also anything that goes into the water with our shower water has to be marine safe so all the soaps shampoos laundry detergent everything we choose them very wisely so they are marine safe and also vegan and not tested on animals [Music] [Music] thank you so much I'll stop you arranging [Music] across the border what's the motto No I'll be a chica chica but you got my - why would you stop Santa don't know just draw away from home to go to from away from because power move from you from I know you from Kappa you run and trusted one just one yeah yes you was from Congo and just run combo it's hold back here fishing permits to fish companies footers but right now we are in Japanese waters and the tournaments for content expired last year so they cannot give us you need to follow your episode [Applause] [Music] so our next steps now is that we're going to bring to the officers over from the ships here for interrogation and then we're going to ask for the ship's Deportes we're figuring out which port that is now it'll be for some tea another glorious Navy day it's a rake it's very very good very good day several targets cross the border we we didn't have any information on what type of vessel it was before we had a visual on them although their behavior on radar look very similar to what we've seen in the past for tourists we're Navy on two boats and a third one try to manage to run away because we were busy with the two other books this year those two vessel are the first RS we are doing this is like my first one of working with the government having the soldiers on board and all it's the first time with that so that's completely different usually we have no real way of enforcing our authority you know we have authority from the United Nations Charter for nature that's about it cuz you look at any country in the world right now and there none of them are going up they're all either stable which is a few that are stable most of them are in decline the methods of fishing are so efficient now that there's no way that the fish can sustain and replenish governments have to wake up countries have to wake up and that's happening especially in Africa where we have now a multitude of nations that are willing to work with us and inviting us to come into their waters to protect them when you face in an unsustainable way you are taking more fish out of the ocean than what there is left to reproduce you are taking the young fish who still haven't made babies you're taking whole schools of fish [Music] let's say they have a license to catch tuna you will never catch only tuna on anything in the net that it's not - now they are supposed to throw it back to the sea alive but it happens very rarely [Music] they are crushed together they already bleeding and they are already dead so that it's just very very hard for them to return the fish to the sea life already estimates are saying that by 19 2015 level of how much fish there is it's below the overall threshold that the fish cannot repopulate anymore the stocks cannot raise to a level where there will be fish left for the future generations and already the levels of the big top fish in the food chain the shark the tuna all this big fish if like some scientists say that bluefin tuna which is a true predator in the Mediterranean already 90 percent of it are gone and it won't recover already some estimates say that ninety percent of the Sharks are gone and can they raise up to the levels where they used to be it's very very much a PvP all the treasures that we have around us are on the verge of disappearing and we already could see that happily here in the Atlantic in front of the western coast of Africa we're used to be tons and tons of fish big size and now we have we've seen these fishermen that are there in their nets you can see very small tiny fishes that could never be a very interest for a normal fisherman I didn't expect the situation to be so bad [Music] some of the species that they have caught cannot be consumed for human consumption so we were tossing back the species that they will definitely not use so the jellyfish and the Blowfish we saw this really big deal in the corner he start to move everybody was surprised in this moment because no one expected that was really like you want to say hey here Here I am yeah the Chinese fishermen came and took CEO and he threw it overboard backing through the waters oh and we could see that survived they just start to move again and he disappeared in the water so these are the small stories that you mind sir and keep on trying try harder I mean if the year wouldn't have moved and moved right and all the way to in front of our feet maybe well he would just be one another dead fish on board so it was yeah a little reminder that you have to to continue hiding [Music] I think it's not just what the single ships are doing that it will make the difference even one ship makes the difference because it's a message we have to understand we cannot stay still and just be witness of the this the ongoing disaster [Music] there are people who view this as an adventure just going to see it's not a normal thing unless you're a working sailor it can be this romantical adventure going off and saving the whales and dolphins but for me it's not that for me it's something that I feel it's the only way of living on this planet doing something where I actually makes the place better [Music] I'm doing this because I want the future world to future generations to have enjoy the ocean how we have in 20 years when you when you're with your with your kid or your grandson you see a whale you know jumping around in on the coast you're gonna say oh I knew a guy that you know dropped everything and went and helped you know put his little grain of sand to help that do I think that people can change the world in general of absolutely it shows you here come on to a ship on Sea Shepherd you don't have just one country you have numerous different countries coming together for one goal it does change but I think we're all still fighting for the same thing in the end you know fighting for the oceans and the life in the ocean so whether you do it romantically or efficiently is semantics right [Music] [Music] you
