I was scrolling through Instagram the other day when I found this crazy Caterpillar and I want to try recreating it oh wait that's my caterpillar this is the real caterpillar I saw on Instagram I'll admit the real thing is a lot better but do you know what it's not it's not bigger which some might say makes mine better well we'll see let's get into this now I like traditional sculpting but if I want to make this out of resin it'll be way easier to 3D print it otherwise I'd have to sculpt it get the silicone use a vacuum chamber make a mold box and then have to cast the resin in a pressure pot with 60 pounds of air pressure which is too much pressure digital is also a lot faster I want to show you how easy it can be to sculpt these squishy inflated shapes the first trick is going to be masking off the entire body now we can erase where we want the shapes to squeeze through now that we have our pattern down I'm going to brush over it with the inflate tool at first the edges are rough so I'm going to switch over to a smooth tool to round those off and then we can go back to inflating them now I'm using the brush tool and the drag tool to grow these spines all done with the mask and we've already got the body well some of it now for those six legs which I only need to sculpt one of when I made these I was looking at a regular caterpillar like this guy but slug caterpillars move like slugs and they have very tiny legs not very different from their antenna we'll just swap that out with the newer Mini model this caterpillar has 12 eyes six on each side adult mods only have two eyes let's get this thing printed [Music] wash and cure [Music] that's a nice click I didn't design that but that's a feature not a bug but I did design a hinge joint to articulate the head and it's got a hole in the disc and then these little hemispheres should pop in allowing it to rotate got it off camera but it cracked not a lot of motion either I need to shrink the circumference and I think I'll put a Groove here to put less stress on the part when it pops in okay here we go head 2.0 it worked much better that's a problem I've printed a new version with bumps [Music] perfectly balanced and it's color changing resin now we just need to make it a little bigger [Music] [Music] this thing is so heavy this is the elegant Jupiter they've sponsored this video and this is their biggest printer yet [Music] like the Saturn II it has an air filter but what I'm interested in are these funky little caps they fit onto a regular bottle and they just plug right in to the vat and it auto feeds the resin so you can print as big as you want and not run out I really like having this light here too it makes it so you can see through the tinted window as it's being printed [Music] this is a giant print unfortunately the first one failed all right back to the drawing board this is the layer that stuck to the bottom the force on the supports of this overhanged area was too much I could increase the exposure but I'm going to position it like a tower this way the thickest part is at the bottom where it's most supported and everything else is pulling on those same supports the first print was also a little too big the reason I did it the other way was to avoid putting supports on these detailed areas but that's okay okay let's try it so good so far and here is the top half [Music] I learned that instead of using Snips you can save a lot of time by dunking it in hot water the heat softens the supports this isn't the best example of it but it works really well [Music] if you're wondering why I printed the caterpillar in multiple pieces it's because each piece needs a different color but I need the colors to be transparent I'm going to need transparent paint that's why I asked createx to send me some this is their transparent red and this is their candy red which is like a completely see-through die I asked them which would be better to use and they sent both I did a quick test to compare the transparent yellow and the candy yellow and for this project I think either one would work out of all the blues there was only one that I didn't feel was too green and that is the ultramarine blue actually a perfect match but to get this look we'll need to paint the inside opaque first now we can start with our first translucent color I mix this blue with a bunch of clear gloss to dilute the paint so we can slowly build up that color we're getting close squishy things that the base are not transparent we'll add some more blue in these divoted areas and I'm going to highlight here with a Greener blue okay don't overdo it that's looking just right I'm mixing some magenta with black and white to create a purple that goes in that same divided area [Music] just like that we'll need 18 of these yellow Pokey things this color is extremely subtle but I'm using green and white [Music] same for these little things [Music] now it's time for the yellow belly this is my favorite yellow Sunshine yellow which looks orange super diluted once again let's need a slight tint for this Hood okay we can up the concentration for more yellow thicker areas are going to be darker yellow there's a little bit of brown that you can see through the outside there's that effect and some brown tips for the legs which I'm stealing from this caterpillar because it adds detail this is the only candy color I had to use it's called tequila yellow it's a beautiful amber color and I'm also going to use it as a wash for these creases [Music] I mixed some white resin into the head print but it's still a bit too see-through so I'm mixing some white paint into the next layer it's starting to look less like a gummy worm spring very light here let's add in some brown and a bit of dark red the area around the eyes is almost as dark as the eyes themselves [Music] add some black and there it is 12 eyes later why so many eyes but will it attach things have been known to go wrong it worked off camera again unfortunately the amount of Leverage I needed couldn't be captured on camera here is a miniature reenactment it looked just like that and it's posable it is coming together but it's lacking some realism we gotta take it up a notch because bugs are hairy little buggers [Music] I got these paint brushes to create the white bristles on these yellow poker things foreign I want to try using a flocking machine to apply them I sculpted these glue grooves so the flocking wouldn't stick everywhere that did not work the bristles are just too heavy I have some one millimeter flocking here that's what it's supposed to look like but it's way too short I tried again with the bristles but nothing's working this is some four millimeter flock I had this might work I'm struggling to get a consistent effect let's start over and try a different machine this one can get plugged in for more power and its gravity fed I got them at the same time but I've never used this one [Music] yeah this works way better for four millimeter thank you let's put some hair on those legs and a darker color for the collar that's a satisfactory amount of hairs a little super glue will hold these in place each of these holes is angled in a different direction based on that photo like everything else [Music] now you might think those brushed bristles were an absolute waste but we'll get to use those after all for these whisker-like hairs now don't be alarmed but these might be used for stinging most slug caterpillars sting but the jewel ones don't this looks a lot like a jewel caterpillar but it also looks like the stinging kind [Music] I mean these are especially suspicious [Music] now for some glossy clear this will help the light shine through and also fill any print lines [Music] again if you're interested in supporting my channel you can join my patreon where I'll be giving away a mini caterpillar and I'll put a couple on my Etsy shop thanks for watching
