welcome to chandwell my name is michael and this is the second of a three part series in which i show how i made the largest of chandwell station buildings many thanks for all of your comments on part one a couple of you mentioned that it was hard to appreciate the size of the station so i thought i'd show you that in n scale this station is very small indeed so here are a few shots of the station which should hopefully show you the true size of it [Music] if you enjoy these videos or find them useful please press the thumbs up button because this really does encourage me to keep making chandual videos and sharing the progress of my layout with you [Music] at the end of part one i showed you the interior of pippa's pantry with its tiny little tables i completed the look of pippas by putting some pink net curtains in the lower part of the windows this speaks to me of greasy calf and chintz and should hopefully set the scene nicely next door in the visit chandler tourist board i placed more of the chandwell posters in the windows the camera can even make out the photo of the weir pub even if your eyes can't i based the windows themselves on those at chester station and i used sticky address labels on birthday cake box to make them i made a video of this sticky label technique for windows and i've linked to it at the end of this video i saved the front windows for last and by this time i was finally getting quite good at hand cutting 0.2 millimeter wide curved frames using on your scalpel i'm over the moon with how nicely they have turned out i stuck some of pippa's curtains to the back windows too and i made sure i did this double-sided so they look right on the insides as well as the outside once the windows and the interior decoration were in place i used plenty of pva to glue on the ceiling turning the building over i added the front i added a strip of stone texture to represent the inner face of the parapet and then used clamps and a right angle magnetic clamp to keep everything in place whilst the glue set i had a bit of a challenge at the vanyard end there was no building interior to keep this all square and there wasn't even any ground because these walls were designed to sit on top of the station concourse that was already in place it's quite long and the card was already starting to bend quite a lot at this point i added the inner face of the wall and then used clamps to keep everything as straight as possible while the glue dried i intended to have the vanyard covered in three glazed hipped roofs so anything that i did here would be on display i cut a kind of grid out of card and strengthened it with card strips which would eventually represent steel girders i would mount this on top of the inner walls and it would both strengthen the overall building as well as provide a base for the glazing the quality of my assembly proved to have led to a one millimeter discrepancy which i had to slice away leaving an extremely thin joint for the front wall i was a bit worried at this point i thought i might have ruined it but thankfully it all turned out okay i glued the roof grid to the building along with the front piece which had a stone back added to it i used a steel rule with my clamps to try and keep the wall straight while the glue dried although i had taken care to construct the tower with no visible card edges there was still a visible join i couldn't decide whether to leave it or to try and hide it in the end i decided to use strips of scale scenes coins to cover up the joins these can be quite fiddly to cut out but as long as you fold them before cutting them they are very easy to use i added a tiny amount of pva glue to the folded edge and then each individual stone and use tweezers to gently get the coins into the right place the edges of the building and the tower really look good once the coins are added and i'm glad that i did this [Music] i cut strips of stone texture that i've glued to cereal packet and then colored the edges of the card with a pen then using a guideline printed onto the building i added a long bead of pva glue and carefully attached the stone strip i did this all around the building some were two millimeters and some were one millimeter the ones on the tower and around the clock face were a little bit fiddly to cut out i showed how i did the curved elements in the video i made about the lore relief part of the station building and i've linked to that video at the end of this one too i think the relief elements on the stonework really add texture and solidity to the overall building i designed the hipped roof myself using an extremely simple method that requires no thinking about maths or even angles and yes there's a video for that and i've linked to it in the top right just up there getting the shapes right in inkscape it was then a really easy job to mount those shapes onto card and then assemble them into a hipped roof using simple triangular supports i used copper tape along the base of the roof connected to the tape from the inside of the building as a simple way to get power to the leds that light the rooms below more triangular supports are glued onto the roof base i used more than was probably necessary but i didn't want the roof to sag made sure i cut a notch to go around the part where the tower is set back into the main building and i love it when my measurements work out it dropped absolutely perfectly into place i used the exact same technique for the pyramid roof at the top of the tower the pyramid is just a hipped roof without a ridge so the same technique for getting the triangles the right shapes worked really well here i used red tape to hold the roof together while the glue set as well as the stone detail i made small sills out of cereal packet covered in the stone texture i was quite rough on the back wall where no one would ever see it but i took a lot more care on the front to cut out little notches so that they fit snugly the sill for the ornate large window on the tower frontage was a bit of a faff to cut out but it fit on the very first attempt which was a bit of a surprise [Music] once everything was in place on the building it was time to glue it down i always glue my buildings to the baseboard because i feel that this makes it easier to embed them into the landscape i ran around the base of the building and making sure it was in alignment with the tracks glued it into place it took a fair bit of wiggling back and forth until i was happy with its final position i really do need to make an appointment for a post lock down haircut i'd already attached the chimneys but i still managed to get a pile of books and pineapple tins in place to hold it all down while the glue set [Music] i used a very simple method indeed to make the two little buildings that sit at the end of the station these four pieces of card are tim's cars they go together like a simple box the door aperture is cut out at the right height for where the ground will be once the building is in place i simply used pva glue to butt join the four pieces of card together i held each piece in place with york magnetic clamps this helps to keep everything square adding the roof at the same time makes sense if there is nothing else holding the building together this keeps the building square and once the glue is dry the little box is rock solid because this building has a parapet wall on the left it made sense to tile it before doing anything else to avoid any card edges showing and because the building is so small i printed and folded a strip of stone texture pre-cut to the correct size this is designed to simply fit around the building i didn't cut the dawn window apertures until after the piece was attached and the glue had set the other little building i wanted to model the window being bricked up but to give it a bit of 3d texture i cut the hole in the outer layer coloured the paper edges with a pen and then mounted a piece of red brick texture behind it i use the same technique of wrapping the building and it has resulted in a couple of little buildings based on the end of sheffield station which have no visible joins and which complement the overall scene really well in the next and final episode i'm going to show how i built the tiny wall memorial how i modeled the ground gently rising two centimeters along the station frontage and how i made the vanyard roof and canopy finally i'll show you some of the little bits that are dotted around the station building to give it the sense of individualism and life if you have any questions please leave a comment until part three thank you for watching stay safe and i'll see you next time
