you know how we only see black holes in movies well it turns out they are real and massive super massive of course scientists have known about the existence of black holes for decades but they've never been able to find one until now thanks to the 32 year old hubble telescope scientists at nasa believe they have found one of the oldest black holes in our universe so what can this black hole tell us about our galaxy in our universe all of this and many more we will discuss in today's video so make sure you stick around in order to understand why this discovery is important it's essential to know what exactly black holes are a black hole is simply a place in space where gravity is so heavy that light and matter are pulled toward it the gravity is so strong that light can't escape a black hole black holes are usually caused by a giant star collapsing on itself and exploding in a supernova a supernova is basically the explosion of a star this explosion causes galaxies and stars to form at the same time as black holes like we said earlier light and matter can't escape a black hole black holes can't be seen because they are completely dark hence the name black hole this is why for a long time scientists have believed in the presence of black holes but haven't been able to see one until now scientists at nasa have spotted what they believe is one of the earliest massive black holes in the universe they even named this giant at the center of our universe gnz 7q not the most creative name so if black holes are invisible how are scientists able to spot gn z7q as previously stated black holes are totally dark so they can't be seen there are however special telescopes that have been designed to detect the presence of these black holes these telescopes look for something called quasars a quasar is a super bright object in space that scientists believe was formed less than a billion years after the big bang a few hundred million years quasars are formed when a supermassive black hole drags enough material from the surrounding environment into its middle the material is then heated by friction and other gravitational forces until it turns to energy for the black hole only young galaxies and colliding galaxies have enough material to form a quasar so scientists discovered this massive black hole by spotting the super old gnz 7q quasar according to them gnz 7q is around 750 million years younger than the big bang in other words gnz 7q is almost 15 billion years old interestingly gnz7q behaves differently from other quasars most quasars are super bright but gnz7q is the opposite it emits faint x-rays and that's probably one of the reasons it hasn't been spotted till now you see scientists have long predicted the existence of ancient low-light quasars like gn z7q but had never been able to find one it may shock you to learn that the area where gn z7q was found is well known and scientists have conducted many astronomical measurements there in the past but have never come across a quasar so why all this fuss about gnz7q in the first place because gnz7q could unlock a huge part of the mystery surrounding the origin of our universe scientists have long believed that at the beginning of our universe the first galaxies began to merge and the gas within them compressed into new stars these stars were born at the same time other stars were dying resulting in supernova explosions the supernova explosions would stir up nearby gases which would then fall into the black hole in the middle of the galaxy scientists also believe that this process does a few things for galaxies it gives them enough material to turn their central black hole into a super massive black hole like the one gnc7q is pointing to it covers the galaxies and dust and provides the right conditions for quasars like gnc 7q to form for a long time there was no way to confirm this hypothesis thankfully gnz7q has now come and scientists can use it to shape their understanding of black holes according to dr jennifer wiseman of nasa gnc7q is not a full quasar yet in her interview with cbs news she said the object has not yet turned on or we can't see it yet as a quasar but it's kind of intermediate some of it tells us that stars are still forming rapidly and that material is starting to fall into the center of this object this early galaxy so using several wavelengths of light we're able to discern that this object is sort of intermediate between the earliest galaxies and these earlier quasars in the core this is kind of intermediate she also tells us why nasa hasn't been able to discover gnc 7q for so long we have some incredible images of the deep universe these are fields of galaxies some of these galaxies are shining on us from a very long way it's taken a long time for the light to get to us one of these little red dots that was kind of overlooked before in one of these galaxy fields turns out to be an emission from a very distant galaxy shining from just within 750 million years from the beginning of the universe the big bang that's a long time ago still we should also keep in mind that without the hubble telescope these interesting discoveries wouldn't be possible launched in 1990 the hubble space telescope continues to shape our understanding of the universe just like it did with the discovery of gnz 7q many scientists now believe that there could be more supermassive black holes like gnc7q they are even more optimistic about finding black holes thanks to the fact that we have super telescopes like the newly launched james webb telescope
