[Music] hello my name is Myra floor and welcome to my channel today's video is going to be a school counselor tag much like those teacher tags that have been kind of floating around the YouTube community for the past few months now I don't think there is an official school counselor tag that I have found so I created a list of my own based on some questions that were on a teacher tag and others that I felt were more fitting for the school counseling profession ok let's dive in so what grade level are you a school counselor I am a middle school counselor specifically my grade level next year will be sixth grade so right in beginning of middle school and I follow my students every year until they transition into high school where are you a school counselor I'm a school counselor in Washington State specifically in the greater Seattle area how did you decide to become a school counselor so the my path to being a school counselor wasn't always straightforward I didn't know that I always wanted to be asked or I didn't always want to be a school counselor I actually graduated with a bachelor's degree in international business which is a far cry from education but the reason why I went to international business or went into international business was because actually was more interested in the International part I've always had an interest in communication intercultural communication how people view the world differently based on their culture where they're from what their families like what the surroundings are like and I just I did the business part on a recommendation from my mom who was like oh they'll be more lucrative than international relations or whatever that is which was a huge mistake because I am NOT suitable for business or that type of career after I graduated I moved to South Korea for a year to teach English as just a part of an adventure I want to try out too it was like being in front the classroom I quickly found out that I am not cut out for teaching but I was really interested in where students kind of came from what impacted their learning and their education what was going on at home and how could I help those kiddos in that way so that they can be successful in the classroom so once I left South Korea I came back home move to Seattle and went to grad school and Here I am let's see um how long have you been a school counselor so this is going to be my second year so I'm definitely a school counselor newb last year was my first year as a school counselor and I was the seventh grade counselor it was a maternity leave replacement so the the permanent school counselor had a baby and decided to be out for a semester and came back only part-time second semester and she'll be returning full-time this coming year so I had to go tell Pentagon but luckily I found another job in a middle school in a surrounding area which I'm so happy for because I really love the middle school level I did my internship at high school level also love that too for a different internet for different reasons but I think middle schools my bread and butter for sure what is your caseload size um I think it's about 360 so far school doesn't start for another three weeks so there could be a lot of registrations over the summer that haven't been processed yet our students that might be leaving so hopefully I'll hover around that number I think I'm contracted to have a max of four hundred students on my caseload with this School District what is your favorite part school counseling okay so I feel like I answered this question a lot for people who are interested in what I do and I think my changer my changer oh my god my answer changes every single time so I think my favorite part of being a school counselor is the fact that this profession aligns with a lot of my personal professional means you can even say political beliefs I there's something about being I was about being trained to work with students who are typically underserved or for example students who may be what they call it who might have like a mental health problem which we know is a stigma in our society and if you're not trained to be able to support students with mental health that could be really difficult so a lot of my trainings also with families and educate educate regard or even helping students with academics so what do I want to do with my life or what are my strengths for my weaknesses one of my interests or working with families who um or what have you told you say it but don't have a lot and being able to search for resources in our community to support them and feel like they aren't forgotten I think it's a great modern thing not being said I think that's not why I do it as well too I do it because I I love this job it's dynamic it's always changing every day I could plan the whole day to the minute and it can be completely thrown out the window because of students having a crisis or yeah usually students are you crisis so you always have to be kept on your toes they always have to be learning changing public education there's always new efforts and new um evidence-based I don't know to say geez it is always changing and you always have to keep learning and adapting and know in order to be able to support coming generations did you always know you want to be a school counselor I think I touched on this earlier but no I didn't when I was a kid I want to be a veterinarian I couldn't imagine even being at a school or being in a profession in which I was constantly talking to people I was painfully shy growing up I would even say socially anxious so having this position never really entered my mind until I went to South Korea and Matt dosed kiddos and it felt very natural for me to be in a school setting what is your typical outfit of the day super easy skinny jeans a t-shirt or a cami with a Cardian over it and flats my last school was pretty laid back in terms of the dress code so that was good for most of the year my new school I think people might dress more professionally which is great and fine for me as well to be a go shopping and kind of get more business casual wear but typically it's gonna be the same things probably be skinny slacks and a blouse or an accordion and plus so why why did you choose your youtube name my adventures I bend my adventure since 2009 when I started a blog to document my life as a teacher in Korea I attempted to keep that blog going even after I left but it didn't really work out although I have I did keep that handle for my Instagram which I've been using for several years now so I thought about something else for YouTube I really couldn't find anything else that I loved as much as my adventures I wasn't even sure if I was going to only make videos about my school counselor life I really do see myself maybe branching beyond that and talking more about my own life I figured I could do my adventures in counseling or my adventures in life or whatever I thought it'd be flexible so I just kept it long as you'd say I'm not creative okay and question number 10 why did you want to become a youtuber so I have been part of social media ever since I was 14 13 14 I'm 31 now I had blogs tumblr blogs instagrams Facebook's Facebook and I've all kite and I've met really good friends on the Internet as well - especially living abroad with other people who shared their lives on their tumblr blogs I haven't really been doing that ever since I came back but it's kind of something I've always wanted to pursue I chose YouTube this time around because I figured it's a great way to first connect with people from other from other parts of the world or other parts of the country in the school counseling field or other teachers but it's also a great way to learn a new skill I'm not well-versed in making videos at all or editing or anything like that so I figured this could be a great way to not to also learn something new as well so if anyone has any tips on making my videos better or any anything related to that I much appreciate it so feel free like poke hey you know this video could be better if you did this or this or pointing out things that maybe I wouldn't say to my own training either be awesome but it really mostly was to kind of share my perspective as a school counselor I don't see a lot of school counselor youtubers at least ones that are active I know there are a lot of bloggers a lot of instagramers but in terms of the YouTube community community I don't see that much so I thought this would be a really great way for me to add my voice to the public education discourse that is on youtube so if you are interested in hearing more about what I do what school counseling is all about or just any questions that you might have you can feel free to comment below like and subscribe if you want to see more of these type videos but for now thanks for watching and I'll see you in my next video
