hey everybody barry here again today i'm going to do something a little bit different i'm used to working on ls stuff over the last couple of years and i haven't really touched small blocks 350 305s that kind of thing in a little while so today i got a set of heads i'm gonna clean up for a guy um he's had this 350 in a boat for a few years and over the last winter it seized up on him so uh i guess he had some water going on in this cylinder and he took the heads off and asked me to freshen them up um just you know lap the valves take them apart clean them up i got this cylinder head done before i thought about making a video so this one here is untouched and i'll start with this one some things i noticed where it's been in a boat and it's got open cooling um a lot of stuff built up here so that's definitely gonna be blocking off water passages like this one here is almost closed off altogether and this one here is really bad too so i'm going to clean up all this stuff head bolts are rough and then going to take the valves out clean them up on the wire wheel on the bench grinder lap them put it back together and you can see i went over the deck here already i just went over it with a little hand sander a little electric one with uh i think it's 320 grit sandpaper on it so it's not going to remove any material from the head but it'll um take off any of this old rusty stuff here and you know just kind of make it uniform again so i'll get out this head now and get it taken apart then we'll clean up the valves lap them clean up the cylinder head and the intake ports here are kind of dirty looking too so i'll clean that up clean up the exhaust ports out here get rid of any oil gasket material and then reassemble in the past i've always used the old screw down crank style valve spring compressors but this one is really really good it's just a clamp so you hook this in here onto the top of the valve spring cap this contacts the valve you clamp it down and then take the locks out sometimes the locks stick so i always give it a tap with a hammer just to make sure here's our two keepers and then slowly let the pressure off here's our springs the cap and the valve rotator for the exhaust side we're going to cut the little o-ring seal off so the valve can go through the cylinder head fix this one and the valve is out so it's pretty simple rig really safe and cuts the time down by a whole lot rather than using the old crank style one [Music] got all the springs decompressed and taken out um as you can see we're missing one valve which i found out is stuck in the cylinder head so i would imagine obviously from the look of the water and rust in there that this was the cylinder that was giving the guy issues with the engine so i'm going to see if i can tap it out if not i might have to soak it all night i would imagine it doesn't look like it's stuck on the guide here because it looks kind of clean i would say it's just stuck on the seating ring down here so let's give it a couple taps see what happens oh so serious [Music] before i go any further hitting it look what's inside this valve that is an absolute mess wow and it's still stuck it won't turn or anything they're definitely gonna need some cleaning make sure that the valve seat and face isn't pitted and i'll check it out again after i um lap the valves to make sure there's no issues with compression or anything there seat looks okay from what i can see i'll clean those up looks like there's a little hint of rust in there but the rest of them look fine i'm going to be putting new valve seals in this too the new fel pro kits come with umbrella seals and o-rings for the exhaust side and a positive pressure and o-rings for the intake side so they're a really nice kit more evidence of water issues look at this that is wicked we're going to clean all this up make it look new and fresh make sure the cylinder head itself isn't rusted out and if it isn't we'll continue on [Music] so i got the intake side cleaned up looking a lot better i gotta clean everything out of course before i reassemble it because it's gonna be a lot of dust in there and some stuff so um next i'll get the exhaust side cleaned up and then in under here so the intake is done cylinder head surface is done and the exhaust is cleaned up there was no gasket material left on it so it was really just clean it up a little bit i used 320 grit on that little sander it doesn't actually remove any metal um but it'll clean off the old gasket material some old gunk that kind of thing i don't really see much as in the way of detonation damage but there is some damage here from water sitting in the cylinder so um that's pretty much all is wrong with this head i got this little bur bit here carbide bit so i'm going to clean up all in around here just kind of clean up around you know in the combustion chambers clean up the ports a bit get rid of any old carbon any rust and then do a real good cleaning and clean up the valves and then we'll [Music] reassemble [Music] [Music] so this is the state that came out of the cylinder heads i cleaned out the coolant ports all around here and cleaned up the chambers they got to be a little bit better yet but i'm going to spray in some brake cleaner so i can degrease them and continue on with that because it keeps plugging up the carbide you can see here that it's already starting to plug up again so i'm going to spray some brake cleaner in there and go on and lap the valves clean those up so this is normally what i do with valves they might seem a bit aggressive but i usually use a bench grinder so this is the old valve with all the rusty build up on it so we'll see how it comes out [Music] so [Music] so it's not too bad a little bit more i got to clean up that one's got quite the pit right there i don't know if we're going to get that out or not we might need a set of valves these are pitted up really good this is the one that was obviously uh sitting in water for quite a while i might have to haul velvet and one of my old cylinder heads and put it we'll continue on and get the other ones done anyway let's turn it a little bit more than i expected this is another exhaust valve that i think was sitting in water by the looks of it unless it's burnt from heat but it doesn't really look like it looks like pitting so it looks like we're gonna have to go for a new set of exhaust valves next we'll check out this intake valve which doesn't look very promising either and as i suspected the intake valves are cooked also that is some deep pitting looks like we're gonna need all new valves so check back for part two have a good day everybody
