this is what the settlement of richmond vale in saint vincent looks like on a good day and here's how it looks now after the las vegas volcano awoke from a long slumber rain mixing with hot ash from nearly a week's worth of eruptions have blanketed the island in what residents say feels like wet cement now the volcano have kept us with our pants down and it's very devastating no water a lot of dust in our home etc so we still thank god that we are alive today but we need more help the volcano first erupted last week pumping dark clouds of ash around 10 kilometers into the air it triggered an evacuation by sea and land of around 20 000 people in the island's north locals say they're trying not to go outside but with the ash cutting power destroying crops and contaminating water supplies some are left with little choice we don't have water we had a little bit of current but on and off not again i myself is here to get myself some water for my home use and family's use around a third of the island remains off limits airspace remains closed and the conditions have also rendered some roads impassable complicating search and rescue efforts no casualties have been reported and while some supplies have started arriving officials say more help is needed we have to get stuff rolling into people it's important that we have water we have shelter we have food we have medicines experts warn the activity could continue for days or even weeks and even when the dust finally clears the government estimates saint vincent's recovery costs will run into the hundreds of millions of dollars manny tsigas abc news you
