ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO 15 MILES PER HOUR WITHIN 500 FEET OF A SCHOOL. >>> NOW TO A DEVELOPING STORY IN THE SOUTH BAY. MOMENTS AGO, THE SAN JOSE POLICE CHIEF GAVE AN UPDATE ON THE AMBUSH THAT LEFT ONE OF HIS OFFICERS SHOT. WE LEARNED THE SUSPECT NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAD A GUN. HE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AND POLICE TELL US THAT HE IS A CONVICTED FELON. THIS ALL HAPPENED JUST BEFORE 8:00 A.M. AT THE MIDTOWN PLAZA CONDO COMPLEX. KATIE NIELSEN HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THE STORY FOR US AND SHE HAS THE LATEST. KATIE? >> JULIETTE, AS YOU MENTIONED, ANTHONY MANTHA ADDRESSED THE MEDIA WITH DETAILS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED EARLIER TODAY. HE SAID THAT ONE FEMALE OFFICER WAS SHOT AS SHE WAS RESPONDING TO THE CALL. SHE IS IN STABLE BUT CRITICAL CONDITION AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL. HE SAID SHE WAS THE FIRST FEMALE OFFICER TO BE SHOT IN THE LINE OF DUTY. IT WAS ACTUALLY HER PARTNER THAT PULLED HER OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE. AS FAR AS THE SUSPECT GOES, GABRIEL CARRERAS IS 44 YEARS OLD AND HE HAD APPARENTLY ALREADY BEEN CONVICTED OF A FELONY AND WAS ON PROBATION AT THE TIME OF THE SHOOTING THIS MORNING, WHICH MEANS THAT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD A HANDGUN IN THE FIRST PLACE. THE POLICE CHIEF EXPRESSED HIS ABSOLUTE DISMAY AT THIS MORNING'S EVENTS. >> TONIGHT I STAND BEFORE YOU FULL OF EMOTIONS, ANGRY, GRATEFUL AND WITH A PROFOUND SENSE OF PRIDE IN THE OFFICERS OF THIS GREAT DEPARTMENT. >> Reporter: WE ARE LEARNING MORE DETAILS ABOUT WHAT LED UP TO THIS INCIDENT. APPARENTLY AROUND 8: 20 THIS MORNING A WOMAN CALLED 911 SAYING THAT HER HUSBAND WAS DRUNK AND TRYING TO HIT HER. SHE APPARENTLY TRIED TO HIDE IN THE BATHROOM BUT SAID HE BROKE DOWN THE BATHROOM DOOR. TWO OFFICERS RESPONDED TO THE CONDOMINIUM COMPLEX AND THEN THE POLICE CHIEF SAYS WHEN THEY GOT THERE THEY WERE AMBUSHED. APPARENTLY THE MAN WAS AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS AND WHEN THE OFFICERS ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WERE THERE THE SUSPECT CAME ONTO THE BALCONY AND SHOT THE FEMALE OFFICER ONCE IN THE MIDSECTION. THE CHIEF SAID THE PARTNERS OFFICER PULLED THE INJURED OFFICER OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE. THAT IS WHEN THE SUSPECT BARRICADED HIMSELF INSIDE THE HOME ALONG WITH HIS WIFE. THE POLICE CHIEF SAID THAT IS WHEN AN APPROXIMATELY FOUR-HOUR-LONG STANDOFF TO PLACE, AND AROUND 12: 15 P.M. WHEN S.W.A.T. TEAMS WERE IN PLACE WE HEARD A NUMBER OF LOUD BANGS AND PEOPLE IN THE AREA DESCRIBED FEELING TEARGAS. >> I WAS JUST STANDING AND LOOKING AT WHAT WAS GOING ON AND I HEARD A BIG OLD ROOM. I THOUGHT I WAS TIRED BECAUSE MY EYES STARTED WATERING. THE AROMA OF AMMONIA CAME OVER ME , AND I SAW ANOTHER GUY JUMPED OUT OF THE VAN AND HE WAS RUBBING HIS EYES. I KNEW IT WASN'T JUST ME. WHATEVER THAT WAS WAS REALLY STRONG. >> WE SAW COPS WITH AR-15s JUST WALKING AROUND, UP AND DOWN THE BLOCK. WE KNEW IT WAS A LITTLE BIT SERIOUS. OUR COMPANY TOOK PRECAUTIONS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE BEING TAKEN CARE OF. >> Reporter: WE SAW ONE MAN BEING LOADED INTO AN AMBULANCE. WE BELIEVE THAT WAS THE SUSPECT. SOURCES WITHIN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT THOUGHT HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN BITTEN BY A POLICE CANINE AS OFFICERS ARRESTED HIM. THE POLICE CHIEF CONFIRMED THAT HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. WE DO NOT HAVE AN UPDATE ON THE CONDITION OF THE SUSPECT, BUT WE DO KNOW THAT THE FEMALE OFFICER THAT WAS SHOT IS STILL IN CRITICAL BUT STABLE CONDITION AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL. MATT MAHAN WAS ALSO AT THE PRESS BRIEFING SAYING HE CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THERE IS MORE GUN VIOLENCE GOING ON IN SAN JOSE, ESPECIALLY AT THE HANDS OF A MAN WHO THEY SAY IS A CONVICTED FELON WHO NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAD A GUN IN THE FIRST PL
