I have been using Samsung S24 series for a few days Today let’s focus on the Ultra We’ll dive into its design, screen, imaging, and AI in four parts First up, the design This year's Ultra series comes in four colors Titanium Black, Titanium Gray Titanium Yellow, and Titanium Violet Black remains the classic choice The only one with a dark frame in the series It’s my third pick Next, the Titanium Yellow Reminds me a bit of a starlight color Similar to a color from a previous Samsung foldable I highly recommend the fourth one as your go-to choice I am really into the violet one Especially its dark back cover Paired with the light-colored frame and camera The contrast just pops It looks fantastic The last one is the gray one we’ve already seen Compared to the iPhone It's a bit more golden For the S24 series, gray and violet are my top picks If you're having trouble deciding My advice: go violet for style gray for business The S24+ features an exclusive Marble Gray At the Galaxy Unpacked event, it was compared to the Amber Yellow model Between these two gray wins my favor Among the S24+ lineup, violet is still my top recommendation So next Let's talk about The subtle design tweaks in the S24 Ultra, which are quite a few First up, the titanium metal frame Since the previous series already adopted a lightweight aluminum frame S24 Ultra isn’t distinctly lighter But definitely lighter Also, the phone’s frame Seems to have a sandblasted-like finish Making it more fingerprint-resistant than the iPhone But it doesn’t stop all fingerprints The second change Is saying goodbye to curved screens Really, not even a hint of a curved screen anymore (except for a slight 2.5D glass on the edges) The shadow effect on the edges caused by the curved screens is gone too With the switch to a flat screen Comes a better horizontal grip Improved display of content And better mistouch prevention All these are back After a whole decade Samsung's last non-curved screen flagship Was the Galaxy S5 back in 2014 Without curved edges Even though it's technically thinner In terms of feel It's pretty similar to the S23 Ultra The third change An ultra-narrow bottom bezel Compared to its predecessor's bottom bezel The S24 Ultra totally wins In comparison with the iPhone Both have almost the same width at the bottom Probably among the narrowest bezels in the market now In terms of hand feel Since it weighs over 230 grams Combined with the right-angle frame When held with a hand It does put some pressure on the hand In this regard, the S24+ is much better Weighing 196 grams It's comparable to the iPhone 15 Plus in weight When hand feel and screen enter the equation the S24+ is a better choice As for the S24, it's even better for single-handed use The feel is similar to that of the iPhone 15 From my personal experience The S24 Ultra Feels more like a mini-tablet While S24 and S24+ Offer a more comfortable grip as phones For the second part of today's video Let's move on to the screen As for the screen It could be captured by two words at the launch event Not mentioned Firstly, the anti-reflective coating (Corning Gorilla Armor) Is truly amazing Let’s compare it with its predecessor under light when the screen is black Can you see this reflection? Let’s focus on S24 Ultra again See it? This comparison Guys In the same setting Now, from the S23 Ultra's screen You can see my reflection Right? But with the S24 Ultra Let me show you its reflection for comparison The S24 Ultra doesn't eliminate reflections altogether But the black becomes much purer When the screen is on Watching the same movie on both You really need to experience it for yourself If you go to a Samsung store Just Compare it with the S24+ Because the anti-reflective feature brought by the Corning Gorilla Armor is exclusive to the Ultra The improvement in effect isn't something you can grasp through specs alone Actually, adding an anti-reflective coating to phone screens Is nothing new Many foldable screens have coatings But those in foldables Often bring a bluish visual effect Now, with the S24 Ultra What do you think about this screen's coating (Corning Gorilla Armor) The coating not only brings a purer black But also a cleaner white In most scenarios With the S23 Ultra, I can clearly tell That I'm watching a glass screen But with the S24 Ultra, it’s like I'm looking at a piece of paper Because of this, the S24 Ultra has become my recent favorite for watching videos and reading e-books The second upgrade of this screen is that It now supports an always-on display Let me test the brightness The brightness is almost the same as that of the iPhone 15 Pro But the black still appears purer The screen doesn’t turn grayish when reflecting light Let’s test out its power consumption With always-on display off, it lost 4% battery Within 9 hours standby With always-on display on, it lost 10% battery Within 9 hours standby That means an extra 0.6% per hour However, currently on Samsung models There aren’t many applications for the always-on display For example, if I send a text message now You may take a look See? The phone lights up to show there's a message When the screen locks Look But once it goes into lock screen mode There’s a small notification icon instead I think Samsung could optimize this feature in this aspect Speaking of battery consumption Let me also talk about this phone's gaming performance and battery life For playing Genshin Impact The phone lives up to the standard for a flagship For Honor of Kings, the phone can’t play 120fps So no test there The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3's power consumption control Really brings a boost in battery life When playing 1080p online videos under the same setting The S24 Ultra used 46% in 9 hours While the S23 Ultra used 52% in the same time The third upgrade of the screen Is the addition of a color temperature sensor Meaning it supports true-color display The screen looks cooler under a cool light And looks warmer under a warm light Both the always-on and true-color display features Are available On S24 and S24+ The S24+ has finally upgraded Its screen resolution to The long-awaited 2K level Moving on to the third part of the video Let’s talk about The telephoto lens, a major concern for many On this year’s models, it's changed from 10x to 5x Many people are worried Wondering if this means a halving in image quality First, I’ll say it once more More zoom doesn't always mean better For most users 1-3x is the most commonly used range The zoom beyond 5x is a niche need And above 10x, even more so Like for concerts or fan meetups Let's look at photography This time, Samsung's 5x lens Comes with a larger aperture Allowing more light in And thereby improving image quality Let’s start with samples at 10x taken in daylight Under 10x zoom The S23 Ultra's optical lens performs better This is with ample lighting Where optics can beat any algorithm But between 5x and 10x The S24 surpasses the S23 Ultra by a large margin At 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, and 9x Each focal length makes clearer pictures So, think about Which one do you use more in daylight: the 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9x Or over 10x If it's the former, go for the S24 If the latter, the S23 Ultra And if you've never used a telephoto lens And aren't sure how to choose My advice would be Either go for the S24 Ultra Or the S24+, which will suffice When the telephoto lenses of the iPhone and vivo are put together They all perform similarly vivo's algorithm leaves more traces Resulting in fewer noise issues Samsung and Apple have a similar approach Not too heavy on algorithms Accepting noise where it appears Now, the second part Night photography performance Once the light dims The S24 Ultra's large aperture and bigger sensor shine Their advantages become clear The 5-9x zoom is noticeably better than the previous generation And at the much-discussed 10x zoom The S24 Ultra and S23 Ultra perform almost the same So, you can say In indoor or low light conditions The S24 Ultra from 5x to 10x Outperforms its predecessor Let’s compare it with iPhone's 5x telephoto Note that on both phones The night mode is off My observation during testing was Samsung's imaging is very fast And it goes the extra mile to avoid the night mode It’s a bit like Goku fighting Cell In Dragon Ball Goku could have bulked up for more power But he chose agility So he stayed in his Super Saiyan form, as he always did Faster low-light photography Means capturing a moment quicker That's the essence of a large aperture For low-light video shooting The S24 Ultra clearly outperforms the S23 Ultra in image quality both at 5x and 10x The quality is better For the third part Let's dive into AI Which is a key focus Of the S24 series Regarding AI Many of you might be curious About which AI capabilities are from Samsung Right? There's a high expectation for Samsung's AI power So I’ll walk you through it Samsung’s first AI feature: Live Translate Call If the person calling you Is a foreigner And you're not familiar with their language Well Here's what happens Say I receive a call from a foreigner Apart from accepting or rejecting the call You may choose to enable the call assistant option in the middle Let's tap it for real-time translation "Hello, I'd like to book a table for three At 7 PM tonight" "Good morning how can I quickly get to your restaurant?" Samsung’s second AI feature: Simultaneous Translation Wow AI has taken over the service that used to cost hundreds of dollars in an hour Imagine using this when traveling abroad For asking directions or ordering food You may activate this feature By pressing the voice button and starting to speak You can choose face-to-face communication Or side-by-side interaction The face-to-face communication option feels almost romantic in a way "Hello, what coffees do you have?" "We have Americano and Latte" Samsung’s third AI feature: Auto-translation in the keyboard For this You need to use the Samsung keyboard Your text can be translated into another language while you’re typing This is handy For messaging or emailing foreign colleagues Making communication more convenient Samsung’s fourth AI feature: Voice Recorder I'll play a video here The challenge is It features two different women Let's see if the algorithm can distinguish their voices In the video there are 5 or 4 people With different accents American and British Including a young lady speaking English with a Korean accent Alright, the video has finished playing Now, notice There are 5 people in total But the last person who speaks is actually the first speaker Click on this recording There's a transcription option Let's transcribe and see its speed Okay, transcription is done You can see Speaker 1 Speaker 2 Speaker 3 It successfully distinguished the two women's voices Then, Speaker 4 Check this out at Speaker 1 again is the fifth speaker The phone identified The fifth and the first speakers as the same person Based on their voice and tone And here We can choose to translate it All of these are Samsung's built-in local AI algorithms Another feature is Summary As for this Samsung has partnered with Baidu’s Wenxin Yiyuan in China Let's select Summary It can quickly organize your recent meeting recordings or speeches Just like this There is a title and three paragraphs This is a summary of the text we just discussed Samsung’s fifth AI feature: Photo Processing After taking a photo When you swipe up the photo You'll notice The phone automatically analyzes the photo's characteristics And provides AI suggestions correspondingly By my count There are about a dozen different AI features so far This is fun For example, for this photo I took by the airplane window With the sky The feature suggests a 24-hour time-lapse capture If you tap it, it will generate a 12-second video with changing sunlight from a single photo For example, in this photo you see reflections on the window In light of this It suggests removing the reflections In this photo, there is a shadow I captured So the phone suggests removing the shadows This shadow In fact has not been fully erased But it does lighten up a lot than before I’ll show you the comparison This is the original picture And this is the processed one If the focus of a photo is a person or an animal The phone will suggest creating a blurred background All of these are realized by algorithms developed by Samsung During the real tests of these features They didn’t always give a perfect result For example, for some pictures The AI effect works works well on them But sometimes it can screw things up So I suggest everyone to try it out for themselves And also Samsung’s Galaxy AI Will keep learning To improve its capability Another part of Samsung’s AI abilities That I find really interesting is that You shoot a video Just as you normally do But when replaying it All you need to do is to press and hold the screen And the video Would instantly become a slow-motion video You can apply up to 8 times slow motion (in editing mode) Let’s try an 8-time slow motion And change the starting point a bit From here The very beginning of the video Then let’s look at the preview Go What do you think All these AI features I mentioned Are developed by Samsung So what are those features That are developed together with some Chinese brands In terms of image processing There are mainly three The first one is to eliminate an object by matting and then regenerate it Like this man here I can select him And move it forward Let me show you the final result (I deleted the generating process because it’s a bit slow) Pay attention to the area where he was at It has been replaced by image just generated Also pay attention to the man’s new position And see if he fits well into it (not really good for now) The second feature Is, by adjusting the angle of the picture To AI produce its surroundings The third feature is to generate pictures with AI These three features are realized in cooperation with Meitu You can use the first two features without downloading Meitu Besides Samsung launched a new feature called “circle to search” Which is developed by Samsung and a few Chinese companies Including Baidu and JD At first I thought this is just the same as Bixby Vision But I find something different after trying it out The biggest difference is that Through circling It helps to locate the object with higher accuracy At the same time The image recognition ability has been enhanced And it shows relevant information provided by Baidu Baike I should say that This is the purest and most ads-free Baidu search engine I’ve ever used Who knows that the purest Baidu Will be provided by Samsung one day That’s I all want to share about the real experience of S24 Ultra The most impressive part of this phone Is still this giant screen A square, amazing And pure mega screen No matter it is watching movies Scrolling short videos Surfing social media Or reading e-books It has brought your experience to a new level In terms of camera All brands are now intensely competing To offer the best picture quality on smartphones What they are going to do next is to optimize the continuous focal lengths And AI is undoubtedly A main theme of this year’s smartphone market The S24 series is the first to really Integrate the whole AI concept on phones And marks the competition in this aspect in 2024 Let’s wait and see The AI showdown in the smartphone market in 2024 Alright That’s all for this video I’m Vincent Zhong I’ll see you in the next video
