what's going on guys my name is Wade with tech daily and in this video we're going to be comparing two of Samsung's not quite Flagship smartphones the 854 5G and the new s23 Fe now if you're in the market for a new device and you aren't interested in spending 700 $800 $900 on something both of these are great affordable options they have most of the features and specs you'd want in a high-end phone without the high-end price tag the big question of course is which one should you get well that's what we're going to decide here and if you just want The quick summary the a54 is the top level a series device right now which is Samsung's I guess budget line of phones and the sacrifices here like less powerful performance and fewer camera features yield you one big Advantage a sub $400 price tag the s23 Fe on the other hand is way way closer to Samsung's flagship sline and while you're saving maybe a hundred bucks or a couple of hundred bucks by opting for this instead of the flagship phone since this phone phone just came out it is still nearly a $600 device there's obviously a lot more to factor in here so I'm going to fill you in on everything you need to know about these two smartphones I'll also touch on where they might fall short if you're considering the flagship s23 or the upcoming s24 for that matter physically the a54 and the s23 Fe sort of kind of look identical and in fact last year Samsung made all their phones look the same from the cheapest a series devices to the most expensive I Flagship s23 and it might sound weird but if you're worried about people thinking you bought the cheap Samsung phone no one is going to be able to tell either way both these phones are 6.4 in corner to corner which I think is sort of that sweet spot sizewise they're actually bigger than the flagship s23 and closer in size to the more expensive s23 plus but the screen to body ratio isn't quite Flagship calber those more noticeable black borders in circling the display yield about an 83% % screen to body ratio on both phones so you've got a tiny bit more bulk with the borders and some people may not like that as far as the rest of the design and build around back like I mentioned already these phones look identical besides their color options and they're constructed of almost the same material the back panel on both is Gorilla Glass 5 so that's somewhat premium the housing and frame on the s23 Fe is aluminum the a54 is still plastic technically even though it doesn't feel that way in the hand this all makes the a tiny bit heavier but all in all these budget phones certainly don't look it anymore and taking a quick look around at everything else nothing really on the left side of either device on the right weirdly enough the volume and power buttons are positioned differently they're much higher on the s23 Fe for whatever reason on the bottom USBC ports speakers and blank spots for the non-existent headphone jacks on each up top is where you'll see the SIM card tray and this is important the a54 does have support for a micro SD card expandable storage so while you may buy the 128 GB model of this phone you can double or triple the storage capacity with an SD card for cheap the s23 Fe does not have SD card support and while you can configure the s23 Fe to up to 512 GB of onboard storage what you buy is what you're stuck with so that's definitely a point in favor of the a54 once again 20 or 30 gigs of space is used up out of the box on these phones with Android OS and various apps so more space especially via an SD card is always a plus speaking of apps one that you'll notice is installed on both of these phones is Bit Defender Total Security this video is sponsor with Bit Defender Total Security you can protect your but their overall specs mimic what you get on the flagship s23 as well their respective 6.4in displays are the same 2340 x 1080 resolution that the flagship phone has cramming in a little more than 400 pixels per inch they're both AMOLED panels which means they're both bright and super Vivid with deep darks and Punchy colors whatever you're watching is going to look great and they both support hdr10 plus content and the icing on the cake both displays here just like the flagship phone offer an Adaptive 120 HZ refresh rate mode for silky smooth visuals and super responsive Taps and swipes now if you want to get into the pars the a54 display isn't quite as bright as the s23 Fe and the am panel on the s23 Fe is the newer Dynamic 2x Hardware so you might be able to pick out a difference in the punchiness of the colors or perhaps even the darker inkie looking onscreen blacks overall though these two budget phones are barely a half step down from the flagship s23 when it comes to their displays and comparatively while the s23 Fe has the higher spec viewing experience it's not a night and day difference that all means the a54 once again comes out ahead just on sheer value alone you get a display that looks as good as the phone that commands twice the price tag and most everyone else who glances at it won't be able to tell the difference by the way underneath the displays both phones do have those fingerprint sensors for unlocking these aren't the flagship ultrasonic sensors and because of that they aren't always as fast or as consistent as the flagship phones furthermore the s23 Fe tends to allow for a faster unlock most times as well but these phes sort of go back and forth as to which one fails and which one unlocks for out loud listening pleasure both these phones have the Dual speaker setup there's the primary one at the bottom and the secondary one hidden in the earpiece and while there's no outright Hardware differences that I know of for whatever reason the sound coming from the s23 Fe seems quite a bit louder at max volume and much better overall quality-wise here's a sample from each so you can decide for yourself now when it comes to the specs and performance this is where we start to some differences between these two phones that really set them apart the a54 being within Samsung's budget a series lineup doesn't have the near Flagship components that an S Series would it's powered by Samsung's own exos 1380 processor and upper mid-tier inhouse chipset that's paired to usually 6 gigs of RAM though this phone can be specked with four or 8 gigs of ram in different parts of the world the s23 Fe has well legit Flagship components but they're actually last G Hardware it's powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chipset which is one generation behind the true s23 Flagship but it has the same 8 GB of RAM you'd otherwise get in the flagship phone so in a way think of the specs on the s23 Fe as what you'd find on the s22 flagship here the geekbench performance scores so you can get a numeric value to compare but in simplest terms the s23 Fe is going to be faster more powerful and more capable across the board now in day-to-day use that may not be a deal breaker depending on how you use your phone but if you're a big gamer or multitasker or you use your phone heavily for work the extra performance boost may very well be worth it in the s23 Fe and out of everything on the s23 Fe the performance is probably where you actually get the most value what's sort of odd right now though is that with the Android versions The a54 actually has the Android 14 and one ui6 update but my s23 Fe for whatever reason doesn't yet have that that's odd because the s23 Fe is a newer better phone and I'm not the only one still waiting for the update so that's a little odd and as far as longevity and guaranteed software updates both phones will get four major Android updates over the next few years but at least one of those has already been used on each phone the s23 Fe sort of has a wasted update to be honest since it was released just after Android 14 was public but either way both these phones will stay current with the latest Android and oneui software for a few more years so that's good at least and it sort of brings them up to par with the flagship phones with that guaranteed support all in all though the s23 Fe is a few steps ahead of the a54 performance-wise and I think if performance is your preference you already know which one you're leaning towards as far as the batteries powering each of these phones even though the devices themselves are the same size physically the s23 Fe has a slightly small battery inside 4500 milliamps versus 5,000 milliamps in the a54 and that's not the only difference the s23 Fe has wireless charging and reverse wireless charging the a54 doesn't get either of those power features but when it comes to their ability to last throughout the day I found that under normal usage they're both all day devices but because the a54 has the bigger size battery and also because it has less powerful less demanding specs it tends to have more juice left over at the end of each day you can likely get an extra hour or two of use out of the a54 at least and while it's not crazy it might be something worth considering if you aren't always near a plug last but not least let's talk about those cameras around back because while they look like they might be an identical hardware setup they're actually quite different now both phones do have a similar 50 megapixel main lens but the secondary camera on the s23 Fe is a dedicated telephoto lens for better zoom capabilities the third lens lens on that phone is a 12 megapixel Ultra wide the secondary lens on the a54 it's a similar 12 megap Ultra wide as well but its third lens is a 5 megapixel macro which is strictly used for up close shots and honestly isn't all that useful the selfie cameras are really different though not in the way you'd expect the s23 Fe has a 10 megapixel selfie lens while the a54 is a 32 megap selfie shooter but those megapixels don't really tell the whole tale inside the camera app these phones do share a lot of similarities with the shooting modes and the features but let's break down what actually sets them apart the angle of the wideangle lens is slightly different for whatever reason 5x on the a54 6 on the s23 Fe and like I mentioned the s23 Fe can zoom in much further and capture much clearer of a shot at every zoom level the s23 Fe has portrait video and director's view camera modes not offered on the a54 you also get different portrait focal lengths with the s23 Fe thanks to that telephoto zoom lens they both have a 50 megap picture mode but the s23 Fe also has 8K video recording capabilities which let's be honest no one will use but that's a flagship camera capability for sure and when it comes to some actual side by-side picture samples well on the surface actually these two phones take pretty darn good shots the selfie pictures aren't nearly as different as you'd suspect but things are a bit sharper on the s23 Fe thanks to it better processing power and the rear camera lens also captures more detail and is able to look brighter and more natural in the s23 Fe as well but the a54 does not take a bad picture by any means and I think since most people just take simple pictures of their friends their food and their pets there's nothing wrong with opting for the a54 at all but if you're itching for that Flagship camera setup with all the extra modes and features that Samsung tends to tout each year the s23 Fe basically gives you a flag ship camera experience for a bit less money to me the a54 is probably the better buy for 95% of people for 300 bucks basically you get a phone that's not too far off from Samsung's Uber expensive S Series and chances are you and all your friends won't even notice much of a difference between the two your wallet will though the s23 Fe on the other hand is a good Buy in and of itself still a couple hundred bucks cheaper than a brand new s23 flagship and has almost all the flagship specs but here's the thing the flagship s23 has already been out for almost a year Samsung just announced their s24 event and the flagship s23 well it's already cheaper than its launch price and it's only going to get cheaper still in the coming weeks so sorry to throw a wild card into this comparison but if you can wait you can probably get a flagship s23 renewed on Amazon or on the secondary Market from eBay or swappa for close to the price of the s23 Fe and that's just a product of the poor late release cycle of the s23 Fe unfortunately but what do you guys think which of these phones would you rather have if you have one already let me know your experience with it in the comments down below I'd love to hear your thoughts of course hopefully you guys did enjoy this video though be sure to
