Samsung M8 4k Smart Monitor - What No-one Else Is Telling You

let's hope that the m8 review goes better than last year's m7 and then the monitor just died so this is samsung's brand new m8 monitor and it's the direct successor to last year's m7 monitor if you guys watch that review video you'll know that it didn't go quite well for me as well as a lot of other people that purchased the m7 is this going to be the same issue i hope not but we're going to go ahead and find out now unlike a lot of other reviews on youtube about this monitor i am in no way working with samsung they did not send this to me i bought it with my own money and i'm going to give you my brutally honest opinion about this monitor because i want to let you know if it's worth your time and money so i'm going to go over all the monitors features how everything works and you're going to walk away from this video knowing everything you need to know about this monitor so while i'm doing this unboxing let's go over some of the specs so as we know it's a 32 inch 4k monitor at 3840x2160 it's got a brightness of 400 cdm2 it's got a contrast ratio of three thousand to one it's got hdr 10 plus support the response time is four milliseconds so it should be really good for gaming the refresh rate is only 60 hertz so if you're looking for that 120 you're not going to get it out of this monitor it's also got a 99 srgb it uses a va panel type it's got bluetooth 4.2 y5 it has a 65 watt usb charging feature and it's running samsung's tizen os now i'm already not feeling super confident about this review i just unwrapped the monitor from the packaging that you saw me take it out of the box i have not touched the monitor screen at all there's also not a cover to protect the screen which typically there is and if we look at the monitor here you can see that there's already smudges and fingerprints right here there's also some on the bottom look at all those marks that's not for me that came right from samsung i will also tell you another first impression the monitor uh does kind of flex a little bit as you can see it's not super wide and it feels kind of fragile so you got to be really careful when you're putting things together so it's super simple to put onto the mount all you need to do is to lift it up put the little grooves into place there and it just simply clicks into place so as far as the build quality goes i'm not super impressed it feels super flimsy on this stand as you can see i'm barely touching it and it kind of wobbles all over the place i also like i don't like the fact that you can't mount it on a vase amount you have to use this stand and everything is also made out of plastic you can also slide it up and down which is pretty smooth but again it doesn't feel very solid okay so here's everything that came inside with the monitor we get a little webcam here that's detachable it also comes a little usb type c connection that you have to plug in to the webcam itself to make it work why it came with two pieces i don't know but it simply just clips onto the back just like that it also comes with a little remote here it does also have a built-in battery so you don't have to worry about replacing those here's your huge 140 watt power adapter it also comes with a usb type-c usb type-c cable it also comes with a full-size hdmi to micro hdmi cable and that's everything you get in the box so let's go ahead and hook it up and see what it looks like now if we look at the back of the monitor you can see that there is two usb type-c connections as well as a micro hdmi now only one of these usb type-c connections are for in and the other one can be used for charging the whole back of the monitor has this herringbone design on it and it also has two rear-facing speakers on each side of the monitor and in addition to just taking off the web camera it does come with this little cover that's magnetically held into place on the back they can just put over the front so you don't have to worry about people seeing you it also has some backwards tilt it doesn't tilt forward any more than this but you can tilt it back a little bit if you need okay so let's go and turn on the monitor for the very first time i'm going to go ahead and set everything up so the setup process was pretty painless all you need to do is connect it up to your wi-fi then it asks you which digital assistant you want to use bixby or alexa i would suggest alexa if you have it because it's definitely better than bixby so here's you can see we have all of our streaming apps up at the top i haven't added any of these these are ones that that came already built into the dash if we go to our list here you can see you can change things around if you want and then if we go to our apps you can see it has a list of other streaming applications that you can go ahead and install if you don't already have them on here the only thing is it doesn't use google's app store it uses the tizen os so whatever you're going to get on here that's pretty much it so let's go and take a look at our settings real quick here's the picture we have our different modes we have standard movie filmmaker that's pretty much it we have eye care expert settings where you can pretty much tweak anything you want the brightness contrast sharpness color tint you can apply picture settings to all sources or just the particular one that you want picture clarity settings we have a contrast enhancer color tone white balance you can change the camera shadow detail color space settings smart calibration and reset picture if we go to our sound you can see it has the output for the smart monitor speakers or you can connect a bluetooth speaker if you want we have sound mode standard and amplify and we have our expert settings for balance eq digital output you can only set it to auto right now auto volume sound feedback and reset sound then for our connection as you can see you can change the network we have external device manager apple airplay settings which is nice because i have iphone and ipad we have settings for gaming general accessibility voice voice assistant amazon alexa voice wake up on voice hint amazon alexa settings broadcasting system manager parental settings power and energy saving start screen options and reset let's take a look at the start screen you can auto run the smart hub auto run last app auto run multi-view mirroring auto run multi-view casting for power and energy savings we have brightness optimization brightness reduction motion lighting we have a screen saver and auto power off so the os seems to be pretty smooth i don't see any lag everything's running pretty well so that's definitely a plus i'm gonna go ahead and put on one of my videos to see how good the picture quality is ufo makes a lot of really good home security products and this dual camera doorbell is no exception if you receive a lot of packages at your house so as far as the picture quality goes right now it definitely looks really good it's nice and crisp and clear and the colors look pretty accurate as far as the sound quality goes the speakers are pretty trash i would definitely recommend hooking up an external set if you do have them or use the bluetooth feature versus the built-in speakers now the monitor also has this thing called multi-view and basically what that does is it splits the monitor into two halves allows you to watch video on one side and maybe browse the internet on another the only thing is is it makes the picture super small maybe even unusable especially if you're going to be using it for a web browser but the feature is there now you also don't have to go all the way into your settings it does have this bar here that puts the most used options all in one place and it makes it really easy for you to get to and change the monitor does seem to go pretty bright again it has the 400 nits of brightness and it does seem to be pretty bright even though it's in a brightly lit room very easy to see now the screen also is not glossy it's got a matte finish on it so if you happen to have the monitor in a place where there's sunlight or really bright lights you're not going to get that glare like you would from a glossy screen now one area of concern for this monitor is if you're going to be using it in a dark room and watching things that have dark areas like dark movies you're definitely going to see a white haze across the whole screen and it's exactly the same as the m7 last year now as you can see the monitor does have a white haze to it when we're looking at it in a dark room on a dark background and if you're not exactly level with the monitor like i am i'm kind of above what you guys can see i see white haze across the whole monitor and it looks pretty bad so if you're going to be watching movies in a dark room that are dark it's definitely not going to be good for your viewing experience so now that i've raised the camera you can see exactly what i'm seeing and there's that haze across the whole monitor it's actually not all white either it kind of looks like it's got some reds and maybe some greens in there as well which is kind of weird and then if we look at the monitor from a side here you can definitely see how there are more red hazes versus the whites if you're not looking at the monitor straight on now i also noticed that this monitor has some quality control issues if we look at the bottom left hand corner here you'll see this white light that's the led light from inside the monitor coming through between a crack of the frame and the panel itself it's also on the opposite side of the screen but not nearly as noticeable so i will be returning this monitor so this is the other side of the monitor but as you can see it's not nearly as bad but still noticeable now that was with the contrast and the brightness up to 100 i've turned down the brightness pretty much down to 16 and the contrast is definitely better but there is still a haze across the whole screen it's not as prominent but it's definitely still there so i did find a movie that was pretty dark in the background this is a little clip from the batman just to kind of show you what kind of experience you're going to get in those darker movies so if we look here at the screen in a darker area you can definitely tell that there is that white haze over the whole screen it's definitely not the best but if you don't plan on watching videos in the dark room with a dark portion of the video then you really don't have to worry about this now depending on which angle you're looking at this monitor or if you're not looking at it dead on again like i showed you before you will get that white haze and then some areas it'll have this reddish haze which i can see right here so that's definitely another con for this monitor and as far as text goes on this screen it definitely looks nice and clear and not jagged now another really cool feature about this monitor is the fact that you can use airplay with it so i'm currently mirroring my macbook pro screen to the monitor wirelessly so you don't have to hook up any usb type-c cables all you need to do is go into the settings up in the top right hand corner click on screen mirroring and you'll select the 32 inch smart monitor m8 and as you can see i'm just mirroring what i have my screen and i will tell you there is a little bit of a lag between you moving the cursor and the cursor moving on the screen which doesn't make it easy to use and i definitely would tell you to not use the airplay if you're going to use this for gaming open youtube you can see it's already connected so that was pretty cool it just opened up the the youtube app and it started playing the video that i was last playing so not bad so here we're using the m8 webcam and as you can see the picture quality looks pretty good i don't really have anything to complain about there's no graininess it's pretty clear so good job on the webcam now another really cool feature is the fact you can hook up the monitor to another samsung device such as a galaxy tab s8 ultra or if you have a samsung phone you can connect it via the usb type c and use samsung dex so you can use the monitor as a pc without actually having to hook up a pc to your monitor so all you need to do is plug in the usb type-c cable it charges your device and as you can see we can go into samsung decks so here we're in samsung dex as you can see we can use it as a portable pc so if you want to hook up a mouse and a keyboard so you can use it like a computer all you need to do is hook up a dock in the back of the monitors usb c port that's not being used and then you can use your mouse and a keyboard just like you would on your computer another really cool feature of this monitor is the fact that it has built-in web services such as microsoft 365. so if you need to use excel look at your emails maybe make a word document you can do that all right from the monitor without any computer connected to it so here's you can see i am logged in we have a word excel powerpoint outlook or onedrive teams and onenote so there's a lot of different options you can use again all directly from the monitor without a computer even hooked up to it now it's definitely not the quickest application in the world but at least allow you to do some work with only a mouse and a keyboard connected to the monitor okay so here we are playing a little call of duty cold war zombies and i must say it looks absolutely beautiful now i also do have hdr turned on it looks great if you turn it off it doesn't look as vibrant as it does right now the response time is set to extreme i don't notice any input lag so so far it looks amazing now before when we had it on a darker picture you saw that it had that white haze and i'm curious if it will do that same thing uh one where in the game with the game mode on everything's brightly lit right now and everything looks great we don't really have to worry about that contrast because there's no dark pictures but once we get into that darker area i'm assuming that we're going to see some of that white haze like we did before so as you can see i have the game mode on we do have the response time set to extreme we have surround sound turned on but we're not using it right now and i also have the game hdr mode on so i can confidently tell you if you're going to be gaming on this monitor you're going to have a great experience the picture quality is absolutely beautiful and because of the low response rate there's no input lag the only thing i can definitely tell you you're going to want to do is to either use headphones or hook up an external speaker because the speakers on this monitor are not good at all and then in the 4k details for the xbox you can see it supports the hdr10 for gaming 4k obviously 10 bit 4k but it only accepts 60 hertz another cool thing you can do is if you have an ipad you can connect the usb type-c cable to your ipad and it will mirror whatever is on your screen here onto the monitor you can also rotate the screen it also charges your device while you're mirroring and there's absolutely no lag whatsoever that i can see so here we're testing out the wireless mirroring option on your ipad with the monitor i can definitely tell you that there is a little bit of lag versus when we had it connected up to the wired connection but it does still work good morning good morning today is new kids on the block day which has been celebrated annually since 1989 this holiday may not be so new anymore but it sure is hanging tough oh boy good night good night sleep tight now i know i said before when i was setting up the monitor that i didn't notice any lag in the menu but after getting to use it a little bit i can definitely tell you that it does lag at times it can be a little annoying especially if you're trying to do things fast because you'll click on the button it won't do anything right away you'll click the button again and then it kind of just goes crazy a little bit so that's just something to keep in mind and here's a closer look at the remote control it has a dedicated button for disney plus netflix samsung tv plus prime video here are your volume and channel buttons your home button your back button your play pause button this is to select and the ok button in the middle the voice button and the power button okay so here i have my mac studio hooked up to the samsung monitor and i also have the mac studio display monitor right next to it and also so you can see i have the brightness turned all the way up on my studio display and the brightness is all the way up on the samsung monitor so you guys can get an idea of what the differences are there so here we have a pretty colorful wallpaper that i'm going to use as a comparison you can also see how brightly lit the display is on the mac studio and then i'm going to bring this over here and you can see that there's a huge difference between the brightness the colors on the samsung seem more saturated they definitely look good they're very vibrant but again like i said your experience may different be different than mine based on how your settings are so colors definitely do seem like they can be very accurate you may just need to do a little bit of tweaking in the settings itself to get it the way that you want and then here i have the same image side by side as you can see clearly the samsung is definitely dimmer but the colors look a little more vibrant than they do over on the samsung studio display so here is that colorful wallpaper side by side with the samsung the colors are definitely really close i can definitely tell that the samsung is more saturated than the studio display but it's subtle it's not like in your face so if you didn't have these side by side you may not be able to tell the differences small text on this monitor is definitely easily readable especially at this size as you can see when i move over the preferences from my mac it does definitely get bigger on the studio display but when i move it over to the samsung because of the scaling it definitely gets smaller but it's still easily readable and it's still nice and crisp and clear so now after seeing all that the biggest question here is would i recommend this monitor to you and my answer is definitely no i think samsung missed the mark on this pretty big because last year's m7 had pretty much the same features as this monitor does with a couple exceptions and it was about half the price as this monitor i definitely don't think the inclusion of a selfie camera and maybe some extra brightness are definitely worth doubling the price of a monitor so let me explain to you how i got to this conclusion i definitely do think that the cons outweigh the pros on this monitor and that's why i wouldn't recommend it but let me tell you the things that i did like about the monitor first i did like the fact that it had multiple ways to connect to it not only do you get the two inputs in the back to physically connect to a patio can also connect to it wirelessly and you can also stream on this device picture quality is also really nice especially when you're streaming 4k videos on youtube the picture is nice and clear and very crisp and that's pretty much where the things i like about the monitor end and where the things i don't like begin i don't like the fact that you can't visa mount it so if you want to put this on an arm and move it to wherever you want you can't do that you're stuck with this stand yeah it moves up and down but it's super wobbly and it just feels cheap to me secondly the build quality is not that great it definitely doesn't feel solid it feels wobbly like i said before and the monitor itself feels like it flexes it definitely doesn't feel solid and when you're moving it around it kind of feels like it flexes a little bit which is not good the next thing is quality control like i showed you before in the beginning of the video it looked like the monitor was already used and sent to me the the monitors brand new it just came out how do i have fingerprints and everything all over the monitor already next are those the little cracks in the side where the led lights were coming through from the frame that's definitely not good and i would definitely recommend anybody return this if you do have that issue sound quality on this monitor is absolutely horrible yes it will produce sound and allow you to listen to certain things but as you turn up the volume it actually will make rattling noises in the monitor depending on what you're watching like i said before i would definitely recommend hooking this up to a sound system or use anything besides the built-in speakers because they're that bad contrast ratio is definitely not that great either as i showed you depending on where you are looking at the screen if you're not looking at it dead on you will see a haze across the whole screen and you might even get some of that red haze off to the side like i showed you before so contrast ratio should could definitely be a little better there is also that ui lag that i mentioned earlier if you're moving through the menus pretty quickly you're definitely going to experience it and it's going to get frustrating i would definitely recommend staying away from this monitor don't listen to all the hype that everybody else is putting out on their videos this monitor is definitely not worth the 700 price tag like i said before you can get a much cheaper monitor that's better than this and just buy a fire stick hook it up you have all the streaming capabilities that this one
