yes everyone welcome back to Food review club now you join us today in New Haven Connecticut for what I think could be a very very special review as always you join us today at Sally's uh Pete's here in the city um and they call it a Pete's round here it's definitely not called a pizza and it is a very very different style of pizza although it does look similar to the New York thin and crispy it's just not different dough hydration levels I'm excited coal-fired brick ovens these brick ovens are the size of houses they're near enough build the extension of the building off the front of the oven that's how big these things are so come inside of us and let's check out this legitimate icon to a lot of people this is Mount Everest this is Santa Claus this is the Tooth Fairy all rolled into one Rumor Has It Jesus worked here at one point as well yeah is that okay yeah do you want to see them making your pizza yeah yeah ring order please [Music] so I would definitely recommend um trying our mozzarella and tomato sauce pie I recommend actually trying a couple of small ones so you can get a few of each different kinds if you get our mozzarella and tomato sauce half of that half of a sauce pie and then maybe try one of our white pies as well our potato and rosemary is very famous and popular and we're also known for the New England clam okay this way it looks amazing all right a mozzarella the big one but you want to do a large one a large mozzarella and tomato sauce and then a small tomato soup and then a small sausage yeah is that good yeah that's totally cool all right totally safe look at the oven yeah I don't think that they're baking just yet but as soon as they start baking I'll take you right on back all right please have a seat enjoy we'll get you some soft drinks started off with here's a good guy for you this is ready he's been here since he was 13 years old he's 15 years old now how's it all right good good I heard you guys um from the review Club yeah that's it Food review Club um yeah near London just north of London yeah Cambridge about an hour north wow yeah I'm gonna be honest for me this looks like my it should be my favorite of a pizza so we're both really excited to be here I'm glad for you I'm glad I'm excited yeah thank you so much yeah what makes let me ask you a question then right what makes the biggest pizza so special what makes the pizza sauce yeah it's the love we put into it and it's just like it's like no other pizza around really why we're number one you know excuse me you know it's a it's a big um combination of everything the work that we put into it no in the oven and everything it's just like all the combination put together it just makes it one almost ordinary pie the the pie the Char and the pilot looks insane I can't wait to taste that coal-fired flavor like with that that's those charred edges been anywhere else yet we've done a few reviews in New York last year but this is the first one today in our second trip so yeah really excited you won't be disappointed yeah would you have a favorite pizza place I like um on a on a flavor front Le Carly beautiful flavor stunning flavor they had like a three cheese combo on it it was really really nice okay yeah but my style is this style like I love this the crisp big crisp pies though yeah I'm excited thanks so this is um we've got some crazy people on the walls here like is it true that Frank's not just got it yeah Frank Sinatra used to sit over here in 15. wow this is what used to be 15. it's 15 now but this used to be 15. and you should sit here but right literally right there now yeah Sally's brother used to be his driver oh wow so he worked for him for many years and that's Tony with Kennedy's father and you know he knew John F Kennedy he knew all the guys all the big guys Jerry Lewis Sammy Davis he knew all the guys you know he knew everybody so because he used to always run around with Frank really this is an iconic Spotlight and he used to work here so he used to work with his brother when they first opened this you might not know but Pepe's is Sally's Uncle oh wow okay so they started working there first before they came down here we might go there today but are you guys friends or is it like a yeah family family yeah good what I mean by that is no like uh rivalry or something you're in the same boat it's a rivalry but it's not nice great pizza yeah that's good to know yeah to there down over there yes modern all of them you know it's just great pizza what we do that's lovely people got to stick together aren't we yeah there's a saying that the rising tide raises all boats that's right so we we just like a little net family and all the tours they come around they stop here they'll stop at modern they'll stop at Pepes the parties they'll go to a few places you know yeah and they'll have pizza all over New Haven we're also going to do Louie's lunch as well that's what great spot great thing that seems the most crazy spot putting in bread like that and yeah great burger tasty very he's not here right now usually he's here their friends would lose lunch really is to always get them when we were kids we used to always get it lose lunch and to this day we still get burgers really yeah absolutely I'm excited this is a bit of a random place for us to come but I think most people that know food and know what this these places are about we'll uh will hopefully appreciate it how did you hear about us just stop being online like yeah that and and uh sorry Louie's lunch as well what was the uh munchies munchies there's some really big videos done on that place they just it's so exciting to see the hamburger cook like that I can't wait to try it great I won't be asking for ketchup I know that don't you dare oh dear I'll get thrown out it won't be a very good video with it yeah definitely not no not the kitchen no all right you're gonna lose don't ask for no cancer and it all these seats and the walls all original as well like this is this I think the last renovation in here what was the last renovation so you think the 80s 70s 80s these are 80s inspired Tyler Ray would probably know they might be able to see Ricky so the sun usually comes in every day he's in one of those pictures you might before you leave you might see him usually comes in midday so yeah you'll get a chance to talk with him but if he's here talk loud because he has a little hard of hearing the last renovation was in the 80s and uh I hope they don't do it again anytime soon it's just just so different um price watch those wondering at home so these are your new having pizzas you've got three options um small 16 75 that's a 12 inch just for 12 inches like that's a large back home in England the medium which I think we've gone for two mediums again they said the mediums are huge 23 or 29 you get the the fall 29 20 inches huge 20 inches um not bad at all pretty much similar prices to what it was in New York but to be fair I'd pay anything to come here today this is for me like I said in the intro top of the mountain um it's cool that you get three different sizes up yeah I think a lot of people here they want to try a bit of everything so you've got a gift from some so I can't just get one massive yeah but you've got some other bits and bits on here as well a few desserts from starters a few additional bits and bobs with the sausage and the and whatnot but for me you can't go too far on the classics I want to taste that sauce taste that dough um we were doing some research and the differences with the the dough chewier which has got the hydration levels are totally different so adult should be chewy iron should have a completely different structure so I'm really excited to see if it actually is different um I love the New York style and the flavor of the pizza it just felt like it felt like a different product it didn't even feel like a pizza so what is this gonna be like I feel like I'm dialing in the levels now a little bit and hopefully you guys enjoy it so if you haven't already like and follow for more And subscribe if you haven't already this should be fire there's some crazy smells coming out the kitchen it looked amazing so when we came in the oven wasn't on there firing it up there's a there's an energy building in the room now um see I feel like a kid at Christmas I'm gonna show you what we burn with a couple of matches and a couple of rocks this is our Easy Bake Oven right here and this is what we make it happen how old is he something about 1900s wow okay it is old oven it's been here for a minute this used to be a bakery back in the day and they had a pizza place next door [Music] [Music] [Music] look at this is that gonna be enough for us both do you think I don't think so thank you so much you're welcome honey I don't know what to say bro so here we have exhibit Number One Source only I believe this one she's got a slight dusting of Parmesan on top and here we have the uh my mouth is water in it I can't quite believe this and this is the uh the mozzarella pie first observations look at that intense Char around the outside of this this pie our pizza here we go let's just dive in bro are you ready now one thing that's not coming across over the screen right now wherever you're watching this video is the smell smell the magic the vibe I know you're not gonna get any of that I'm gonna do my best to articulate this we know I'm a big hippo and it's not my strong point but just mark my words that this smells amazing and here we go for the I mean have a look at the cook in there bro it's good here we go people my first ever slice of New Haven pizza here at Sally's [Music] wow all right no that's just wow I took a wrong turn one day I'm driving home today right let me compose myself I've absolutely no hesitation in zone while I know what this is still open after 100 years um [Music] breathtaking it's so saucy the dough has that too very very different to the New York style the New York size that crisp crunch like a cracker this has a slight chew to it slight Bend it's like perches different character totally then on that go you've got this thick heavily applied sauce thick as you can see here look how deep it is it's thick it's not too much slight bit of acidity to it perfectly seasoned [Music] not too much cheese [Music] it's just like it just [ __ ] works mate so many pizzas that we've had in the UK have just been I can only describe them as wheels of sadness joyful yeah and that child on the outside just right these coal-fired pizzas are cooked under such incredible Heat that heat is what brings to life the dough wow wow wow should we have one of The Originals for that amazing let's try let's try an OG slice you can see it oh just it's been sitting there for a while now so cool you ready I smelled it tomorrow oh right is that made with magic Magic it just shouldn't it just shouldn't worked but it just does I feel like you need loads of cheese on top you just don't do it you don't don't no that's a plan that's our plane that's the classic plain pizza a lot of sauce it used to be Sal's favorite it's breathtaking my friend more business here thank you absolutely stunning I don't know what to say it's just yeah you guys know what you're doing thanks see the jar on the bottom that child brings it to life absolutely some people think it's burnt but it's not fun for me there's nothing worse than having a pizza that's underdone with those it just gets desperate to be just to be brought back to life it means that extra little fire to give it that that nice taste that that it has you know because of this raw it doesn't taste right how long have you been how long have you been here yeah for a minute yeah I've seen it all yeah I've seen a few few pizzas come out of here here's the original recipes exactly like it used to be yep exactly 19 some sours here I used to work with South yep and then I worked with the brothers the mother that's the brothers right there they got me around here to a picture up there I'm not down there somewhere but Sally was called Salvatore yeah that's the wife and the two sons over there he's right here wow tell me about something Sal tell me about it yes an incredible person incredible individual he liked he always had us around I mean all his kids and we used to live on the Block hang out on the Block people the kids cuddles used to live across the street when I started working here my sister used to live next door and build build the next door that's how I started yeah I used to come around the back you guys you want a pizza absolutely yeah very good guy very generous very um outstanding [Music] there's no other sound there's only one South what are you uh in a heart of gold what do you thinks I would think of the progress of the business now right now yeah what do you think you'd say I think he's still around here yeah yeah I got poked a couple times walking by over that way yeah amazing serious and I say Sal we got this it's funny come into these Giants of the game you uh some to swap meet in Your Heroes sometimes you're worried whether it's going to live up to or not if it is just hype or whatever else but I'm I'm so glad in all with all my heart that I've eaten us today and it's exactly what I wanted it to be thanks yeah I'm so glad I really am I am so glad we've been to a few places where it hasn't quite cut the mustard stood up to his expectations this is the real deal yeah the real deal and I think I was I didn't think I'd like that as much as I did and I think that's got more more to it than that amazing such a simple simplified but it's not that simple though is it it is but it's not yeah exactly it looks too easy Callum should we uh conclude outside show us the the undercarriage I don't think you showed us this one's a bit more charred than the other one it's the the sauce on top is just so thick like it's not not that it's none of it's falling off so so what makes that better than normal the cheese on for you flavor of the sauce you're gonna have some in a second cam atos it's like the most incredible thick tomato soup it's not like a pizza sauce it's like an actual product in itself they've got garlic in there I've got all that seasoning it's got that sharpness to it I know it's a tomato soup it's not overdone it's overproduced and it's just and then a little dust in the cheese on top which brings that saltiness to it it's also sweet it has that that zip on your tongue the butt into it how's that zip brings you alive I was saying as well this sauce is made in a secret place and I hope they keep it that way no the people in the back of the kitchen look at the pieces out you know it's just like three people next door make the sauce [Music] love it very different yeah yeah for sure you had it there less is more Pile in your pizza up with all these spicy sausages and different things you're just masking the flavors for the good stuff that is special and it's so many levels outside for the conclusion you'll only meet someone then they've also got a party trick so uh apparently can blow the world's biggest uh chewing gum bubbles she said she's going to be in the Gettysburg as well the right gust of wind there so you might take off and that's what happens but here's so for whatever reason I've Loved gum and gumball machine since I was a kid yeah I don't know why well actually I know why my dad gave me a gumball machine from when I was three years old so that was me when I was little that was my first gumball machine oh wow I still have it I don't have a tattoo of it on my leg well here we go Sue oh it's gone up look at that wow that's the original gumball machine that's a big tattoo as well yeah so if anyone's interested in seeing Sue blowing her bubbles her gum bubbles what's your Tick Tock called bubble gums too bubble gum soap that's amazing thanks so nah you're obviously chewing some gum now to if anyone watching then wants to get into this how long do you need to tune for to get really getting the juices going like you have to chew it until all the sugar is out wow so you want the gum to be hard okay not a soft gooey gum because it's not gonna you think soft you think so that's probably where people go wrong with it if you think soft can do more no it needs to be hard no I have to be like that wow yeah [Music] my God no no it's not ready yet not ready yet the best gum to use is double bubble so double bubbles out there um that's the kind of gum you have to use well so I've really nearly as much as the pizza I've enjoyed meeting you today same here seriously same here I've done this for a long time and I'll have to meet great people especially from around the world it makes me love what I do banks have been so nice to us you're welcome you're welcome can we also get the proper of a beach a dash b as in boy e e z as in zebra a Beats a Beats [Music] a few moments later um what an incredible experience that was um first time we've ever been there you really capture the Essence and the magic of the people in the room the only the food it's it all adds up so when you're putting a score together for somewhere like that you have to put take it all into consideration the cleanliness the vibe the magic the feel the quality of the ingredients the price point it all comes into it and I think that you know sometimes I could get a bit carried away it's in my nature I'm very passionate um but that was probably one of my favorite reviews we've done speaking to speaking to them inside of that you guys get to meet the people as well which is fantastic for you guys and these these places were started by migrants you know coming over there recipes and their love and nearly 100 years later it's still here thriving it's the American dream it's the American dream talent I just find I just find the whole concept very very special um and we have got a little takeaway let's get show everyone in the daylight just how rich and Electric about to double stack it that's a bit sacrific I've had to put the cheese on the cheese out I've left this one open but it smells so good oh just look at it it's just so at the beginning I said about the hydration of the dough would it be different to taste it absolutely was you can bet you've had a a lot of pizza you verify that right yeah it's a lot chewier a lot chewier more Neapolitan qualities to the pizza but it's just cooked bang on so you have the Chris you have the crunch but there is definitely a true factor to it the structure is so different and it's this thick sauce with that zip on the tongue the cheese that parmesan was just hit the spot the chart itself a lot a lot more tar than the New York style and I really didn't think I was gonna like the tomato sauce so much better it's amazing I am a little bit speechless Callum so how did it stack up with you know flout in Belfast and the other ones red they're different they're just different um for me this is in its own League um New Haven original Pizza since 1930. I keep saying nearly 100 years got a little way to go yet it's nearly 85 nearly 85 years there's still a fact check for everyone getting in the comments I still are old enough um you said that pizza's pizza oven has been around since the early 1900s because it was a bakery beforehand yeah crazy Madness brother I would be wrong if I I just it's just perfect perfect score 10 out of 10 for me whoa 10 out of 10. wow the rest of the trip has got a a long way to go uh but look we could be pleasantly surprised Sally's are Beats thank you so much for having us today that was a breathtaking experience meeting you all like and follow for more And subscribe if you haven't already because ladies and gents that is [Music] got the fastest freshest food in the kitchen different places different flavors try different things [Music]
