Salatin's "RAKEN" House | Rabbits & Chickens Together

this is the racking house this is very special the wonderful design let me tell you the story of the busiest day so far on the greatest American farm tour we got up early this morning it's a great day we're heading to Joel Salatin Polyface farm the first stopping at a grocery start eating breakfast you guys like that is it good yeah yeah those trays are working out nice after that I got to put the Virginia sticker on our United States map then I made some of my good buddies Pete Canaris bulletproof coffee oh by the way that guy has put up 30 incredible videos up on YouTube he's about to unload all kinds of great info about food for us check it out then Beauty came back from the grocery store very excited about finding some consult flour and kids fires a whole box for 10 bucks after that a quick stop at Target then we hit the road and eventually crawled I think about 37 miles an hour up the mountain coming into the Shenandoah Valley but my word the views [Music] we got to the campground and set up the bus after that we got in the car enjoyed the breeze on the way to downtown Staunton [Music] [Applause] [Music] and there we discovered something very special we're going to head out to Joel Salatin this afternoon I'm going to grab something to eat Oh what how often do we get a chance to eat out a restaurant that serves Polyface good how often not this is a local co-op kind of health food store called cranberries oh my word I smell it too often not smell restaurant and can't eat it but I can eat this cranberry [Music] after cranberry it was finally time to head to quite possibly the greatest farm in America [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] those views though is that not if it's not some of the most beautiful country we've seen on this tour then we arrived and quickly checked out their greenhouse garden and there's huge wood pile wood boiler for heating one of these houses or all of the houses it is 6:30 we're not expecting to see anybody tonight but they have a policy where anybody can come and just look around so that's what we're gonna do you see the guy yeah is that what you're saying thank you the better we're going to go up and I don't reach I don't even ready nervous no any reason to be nervous you put a bunny early I see you already found the tractors what's your name what's your job on the farm oh good track tractor yeah you drive the tractors oh my all by themselves youngest tractor driver right here this is the farm managers son very friendly I guess he's the new head spirit Polyface farm this is Nathaniel you guys trust around this annual all right any guess is that what's going on in here kids chickens and bunny this is the racking house it's very special the wonderful design or then have the rabbits good with rabbits and huts why not put them above chicken the manure drops down through there raising the rabbits for me the manure drops down through onto deep mold what y'all do get some grass for the bunnies that's very kind of you shopping in it are you gonna dress for the dinos I don't think your finger my finger oh the diners are loving that guy good job anyway what I was saying was the manure drops down into deep batting they've got wood chip batting in here this is similar to construction there they drop that manure drops down the wood bedding and the chickens stir it in to create a rich compost and the chickens of course are adding their manure and you get eggs out of it too Oh riots going on for riots warning but like those it's like at those soccer matches where everybody rushes the fair come on everybody calm down calm down we're getting some more grounds bad for everyone Nathaniel's showed us the baby chick whoa check it out dividers in here so you don't have too many in one area nine and thinking this is one of Joe's grand children's project a little chicken tractor looks like some layer bird the grandchildren's sheep operation jolts man cave so what y'all think Joel's man cave looks like video games big screen theater seat ass audio after discovering all those cool things we got Nathanael back to his dad and we went on a walk to see what else we could discover [Music] all right come on come on Miss around running out of steam look what we found pastured poultry and pasture poach it in but not just one an entire fleet stack them in a formation here so that I can get in between here they're not right next to each other runoff doesn't go right into the other pan you can see where the chickens have been the healthy disturbance the manure is going to come back greener and healthier than before they move these guys every day at 10 by 10 10 nothing fancy one hanging auto water a bucket that feeds that auto water a trough of food under there unless kamanu but the cows came through here earlier to mow it down form chickens don't like terribly long grass so why not get the cows to do the work for you then you come any pins we have there are a bunch of pin there's one two one two rows and there's more down there three four there's four rows from my quick calculation are over fifty pastured poultry pens here and if I remember right from this books it's about 75 in each pin you guys do the math oh wait a minute we got some vacancies over here so I guess I'm full capacity you could have that many right mom you sure am I going to hit it I think so unless you feel fancy hot okay baby hey how can I help you and then you have to have to hop on oh ha and you have to hop from one leg to the other what's going to happen is I'm going to hop and then I'm going to fall on it that way what's up step on go forward Brenna's remember bike elliptical okay just going to go under it you're going to later okay I'm just going to pick you up here you got hold the camera for this in case nothing goes wrong they're getting here we're gonna watch out there and it's probably not even on is why they really have a good show what here catch me on the Sun just my leg come on gradually no matter you can get over the van and you know whoever's in the house having a good job because this been threatened even over here the fence is not even connected puts my office sometime here and never that is entertaining [Music]
