this is ryobi's new oneplus battery-powered cordless dethatcher and today i'm very excited to be able to show it to you and to give you my official review let's get started [Music] [Applause] [Music] so this year ryobi came out with this new 14 inch clearing with d thatcher and at the time of this video it's actually being marketed as a d thatcher and an aerator and i'll talk a little bit more about that in a second but what i want to do is just go over the basic features and specs with you talk about how i've been using it and what i've used it for and tell you what i think about it and have a special surprise at the end of the video [Music] [Music] so right out of the box you're going to get the dethatcher machine itself it comes with a charger and two four amp hour oneplus batteries that work with all of ryobi's oneplus tools so drills saws flashlights you name it they make tons of oneplus tools and all the batteries are interchangeable and all the batteries on the oneplus line all the oneplus batteries work with this machine which is great it does come with two cartridges it comes with the spring loaded tines for dethatching and it also comes with a more aggressive solid metal heavy duty scarifier attachment which they're marketing as an aerator now as you can imagine that caught my attention because obviously i don't consider this to be an aerator i don't think any of you consider this to be an aerator especially those of you that have used or seen similar tools on the market so i did reach out to my contact with ryobi and passed on the feedback that this is more of a dethatcher scarifier type machine and that i don't think it's an aerator and they're very open to that feedback but at the time of this it is being marketed as a dethatcher aerator i'm going to refer to it the different attachments as a dethatcher and a scarifier so as not to confuse anything just in case they decide to change things up later on changing out the cartridges is really easy you can use the allen wrench that comes in the box or you can just use a drill attachment there is a small plastic piece that the screws pass through that hold the cartridge in place and you need to remove that and transfer it over to the new cartridge i wish that both cartridges just had the same piece on it so you didn't have to transfer it over now as i mentioned this does come with two four amp hour one plus batteries and it does take two batteries to make this thing go it doesn't matter what size you can use any size of the oneplus batteries you can mix and match the oneplus batteries as long as you have two of them in here you're good to go now this does have four different height adjustment settings and it's stupid easy to change the height all you do is pull the lever out select which one you want push it back in it's as easy as that i'm adjusting the height just sitting here for all of my fellow software engineers we're on a zero based index here we start at zero for the highest setting and go to three for the lowest setting so using the machine's really really simple there's a handle on both sides here that you need to squeeze in before pushing this button to start it and after it started you can switch between the handles as long as you keep one of them pushed in depending on you know whatever your needs might be so really nice that they give you both options for each side and not just one i like that a lot now you'll notice that i don't have the bag attached here it does come with a bag all of these machines come with a bag no matter what brand you buy from about the bag i don't like the bag i i always try to use the bag however the bag in my experience is just not worth using especially if you're planning on using this across your entire lawn multiple times it's just not worth it what happens is when you run the bag on this it'll collect material fine but after one or two passes it's full and all of the material gets caught up underneath the bottom and the machine's not going to perform very well so for me it's just worth ditching the bag especially when i'm doing an entire lawn multiple times ditch the bag let the material just gather across the lawn and then you can go over it later and collect it by raking it into piles or vacuuming it up with your lawnmower there's lots of different ways to collect that material but for me the bag is not the ideal way to do it now the real question with this being a battery powered machine is how long do the batteries last and that was one of the first things that i wanted to find out and i wanted to find it out in a couple of different situations i used this at my parents house as i get ready to put down new grass feed across their whole front lawn and we used it to clear out all of the grass that i killed in preparation for planting their new lawn i also used it right here next door at my neighbor's house they've never dethatched before and i knew i'd have a good time over there and so i took it over there and ran it over there so i've put it in a couple of different conditions and i found that battery life really depends on how much you're using this how hard it's working if there's really no material there and you're just trying to get dead grass out of the ground it's going to last a little bit longer than when you're on a really nice lush thick lawn it's not going to last as long so in my experience battery life on this machine ranges anywhere between 20 and 30 minutes of runtime with two 4 amp hour batteries now another way to put that would be about 1500 to 2 000 square feet give or take depending on how fast you're pushing this around the yard and you do have to push this around the yard but it's not a big deal because when that when that uh cartridge is spinning underneath it's gonna kind of pull you along anyways there's really no effort from your part other than just telling it where to go and the best part for me honestly is not having to worry about dragging a power cord around with you and having to manage that every time you turn around making sure that you have enough cord to get you across the yard or switching from one outlet to another outlet that hassle no more this is great and that's honestly my favorite thing about this is just not having to worry about extension cords charge battery plug them into the machine take it out let it rip so one last thing i want to mention before i get into some final thoughts i highly recommend picking up extra batteries for this at least one pair of extra batteries especially if you plan on making multiple passes across your yard with this while you're using it it's going to be way easier for you to have an extra pair of batteries on hand that are charged up and ready to go when the initial set runs low or runs out i think a lot of people are already invested in ryobi's product line so you might have some extra batteries lying around the garage which is great otherwise it's going to be an initial investment in those extra batteries on top of the cost of this which i'll talk about in a second as well so overall i think this is a great option and i would absolutely 100 recommend it just on the fact that it's cordless alone if you're looking for a cordless option if you're looking to cut the cord from an existing tool if you're looking to upgrade i highly recommend this i think it's great not having to deal with a extension cord like i said before is worth all of it to me and if you're already invested in ryobi's oneplus lineup all the better you're ready to go this will complement that and fit into that lineup of tools really nicely so i do find the 400 price point on this to be a little high especially given the fact that i'm recommending you get extra batteries when you buy it so that you don't have to wait around for batteries to charge there is an initial investment there and i think a lot of the cost of that has to do with the batteries themselves and the charger that come with it batteries are expensive and with this being a battery-powered machine you need batteries so consider that it seems like everything is a little more expensive these days and that's just kind of something that we're dealing with but even still i'd like to see a lower price point on this especially considering the competing products on the market today well there you go there is my review of ryobi's new oneplus cordless battery-powered dethatcher i hope this was a helpful review i hope my thoughts are helpful if you're looking to
