hello and welcome to this instructional video my name is Ryan and I'll be going over how to run and interpret a crosstabs analysis in SPSS so for this instructional video today I've created a data set that has two variables we have sex and we have sport preference so for the the storyline behind this is that let's say I went to a high school and I asked 100 students to indicate their sex so they're either male or female and then I also asked them to indicate which sport they prefer between basketball and badminton let's run a crosstabs analysis and answer some questions about these data now actually running a crosstabs analysis in SPSS is pretty straightforward we just need to go up to the analyze menu go to descriptive statistics and then click crosstabs now I run crosstabs I like to keep sex as a column but it doesn't really matter if you put sport preference or sex in the row or column the math is the same either way and then when we run across tabs we usually want to know the percentages so I'm going to go ahead and check those and I'll leave everything else as it is and then we're ready to run so we can click OK so now we have our output let's think of some questions we might be able to answer using cross taps so let's say that we are asked to report to some school administrator which sport students prefer because the school has enough funding for one but only one after-school sports program we don't want to exclude males or females so we need a sport that both of them like to find out the percentage of students that like each sport regardless of sex we can look in the total column on the far right and then we can look in the percent of total row for each sport because again we're interested in what all students like not just the males or just the females when we look in the percent within total row we can see that 63% of students reported preferring badminton over basketball only 37% of students reported preferring basketball over badminton that sounds like a useful piece of information to pass along because it directly answers the question of which sport all the students prefer so we go ahead and report that badminton is the preferred sport but the administrator is wondering which group of people likes badminton more so what they're really asking is two questions the first one is what percentage of females prefer badminton and then what percentage of males prefer badminton with crosstabs we can investigate the composition of a group such as those people who prefer badminton we'll go to the badminton row and because we're wondering what percentage of people within each sects prefer it we need to look at the percent within sects row then we just follow it along to the females column and we find seventy 1.7 percent and then the males column where we find 55 point six percent so we'd say that a crosstabs analysis revealed that about 72 percent of women prefer badminton but only a little over half of men prefer badminton to basketball this illustrates crosstabs utility in showing us how the people within one group are structured so as a final example let's say that the school administrator has one final question she asks us of all the people who prefer basketball what percent are male answering this question is just as easy as the last example first we're gonna start in the basketball row but instead of going to the percent within sexes row we need to go to the percent within sport preference row this is because we're now trying to answer a question about the composition of the group of people who prefer basketball now when we follow this row along to the males column we find the value sixty-four point nine percent this means that of all the people who prefer basketball about 65 percent of them are males that is all I have for you today thank you so much for watching this stats in five tutorial I hope this short video helps you better understand how to answer questions using crosstabs output if you have any questions about the statistics and methods lab at ASU West Campus the producers of this video you can visit our website at Sam lab ASU comm and if you like this video then like us on Facebook you can find us at facebook.com slash Sam lab asu again I've been Ryan and thanks so much for tuning in you
