hi I'm Willie welcome to my channel thank you for being here I appreciate each and every one of you and what we're going to look at in this video is layer three switches versus router on a stick so let's hop into it here so router on a stick versus layer three switching so what is a router on a stick uh if you've been around for a while you know we've talked about it other people talk about it but what it is is it's a method of routing VLS and Inter VLAN traffic using a single router interface and a switch and I'll show you a diagram here in a second so one physical interface is configured to manage traffic for multiple VLS how does it work it uses that single inter interface connected to a switch the interface is connected excuse me the interface is configured to understand VLAN tags using correlating sub interfaces um allowing it to Route traffic between the vlans and when should you use it small networks or situations where you have limited Hardware resources you can't afford dedicated routers um you want to keep it simple we always like to keep it simple and uh or you don't have an L3 switch it's also powerful or also useful when you need Advanced routing and firewall capabilities that probably aren't available for most layer three switches right so we're going to see how we're still going to use a router and here is a picture of router on a stick so you can see we've we've got our router here we've got a trunk between our switch and then we've got our different VLS that we are routing and we are um Limited in the amount of data that we can transfer by this single port in between those so if you've got a one gig Uplink and you're saturating it I mean that's that's it you only get a gig so um it is limited to the speed of the trunk link for all VLS but provides Gateway services for the route of Last Resort layer three switching what is it well it is when a network switch performs routing as well as switching layer 3 switches can process routing protocols such as ospf bgp uh rip if you're still using that and make routing uh decisions like traditional routers how does it work layer 3 switches can move data within VLS as well as between them at wire speed because it never has to go out over a single interface everything happens in the fabric of the switch and it uses internal routing tables they handle packets based on both Mac addresses uh like a traditional switch and IP addresses like a router and when is it used it's suitable for larger networks or environments requiring high-speed routing between vlans if you've got traffic you want to offload such as you know you got a smaller Network and this is actually something we used to do very common you'd have a you know a usg3 or a smaller router and you'd have a bunch of cameras you didn't want all that that traffic traversing so you'd set up a a VLAN on a small layer three switch like an edge Edge switch and then you would just have a route between the USG and that for when you wanted to get to it and everything was nice and all that traffic stayed in that switch um layer three switches are faster than router on a switch due to their Hardware based routing capabilities and we we use it in cases where performance is critical such as uh data centers or large networks or if you have some of the layer three switches we're going to be featuring here on the channel in your lab your even your small to medium business now is becoming attainable to have layer three switches and here is a a quick picture of a layer three switch super fast and efficient but doesn't provide Gateway services such as Gat or firewalling in most cases when youve we've got that that route of Last Resort which is the route that gets us to the Internet so you can see our layer three switch here the VLS are internal and then you've got your machines that are connected so uh you can switch and route between many ports not just you know one here's a uh side by side of router on a stick versus a layer three switch just bringing those together so you can see them kind of side by side and layer three switching let's kind of wrap up with this um you can see that I've got two layer three switches here they've got connectivity between them so that could be like I said ospf bgp nameing and you know a routing protocol and then we've got a physical connection to a firewall which is then connected to the internet so layer three switches can route between vlans and other three- layer switches using Dynamic routing protocols at wire speed so they are very fast acl's are used on uh switches instead of firewall rules to limit traffic and should be configured very carefully if you've never configured acl's don't do it hot do it in a lab environment uh because acl's will lock you out completely uh so you have to be very very careful with that it is very easy to make a mistake with an ACL um that that will lock you out and if anybody who's watching this who's been in it and been in networking for a while you understand how easy that is now most layer 3 switches most layer 3 switches don't provide firewall functions such as like state state full inspection DPI country blocking or Nat uh um what you need to get out to the internet unless you have a block of your of ips that you own and you're giving those static IPS to everything it's very important because RFC addresses cannot be routed over the internet and your ISP should actually be configured to kill that traffic when it sees an RFC so a 10 do address a 17216 192 168 those should die as soon as they hit the internet um however uh you will still likely have another router firewall that will be your gateway of Last Resort that gets you out to the Internet so they're going to work in conjunction unless you're spending money on some super high gear um super high-end expensive gear you're not going to uh get firewalling Natty capabilities in most layer three switches so uh that will wrap that up I wanted to kind of get this out there because we're going to be doing a lot of layer three switch content uh starting with the next video so if you've got questions about layer three switching versus router on a stick or layer three switching in general post those questions down in the comments and make sure you give this video a thumbs up and that you subscribe comment share follow me on Twitter
