foreign [Music] foreign [Music] um [Music] um [Music] hey is [Music] hey um [Music] um [Music] hmm [Music] you're alive and welcome here we're going to begin this morning with hinematov [Music] m [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] my [Music] good morning and welcome everyone thank you so much for tuning in into our service this morning and letting us into your home my name is rabbi anival mas i'm the spiritual leader of congregation charizaric located in the beautiful prairies of manitoba canada we are in the city of winnipeg it's 9 32 a.m local time for just for the benefits of all our international viewers i know there are many of you following us from all over the map so just a quick reminder our chat is open we are reading your chat from youtube and facebook so feel free to use this all the time let us know who you are where are you from even if we don't read your messages out loud we will take time to read all your messages i would like to welcome you and also on behalf of cantor leslie emery good morning leslie good morning we have our beloved champions bill wiseman here hi bill brand new lake clergy tally milo good morning talisha natuva we have an amazing charizard quartet conducted by justin ottwak hi justin john say hi everybody alisa kira and uh steven cox our accompanist and of course our audiovisual director marvin polanski in control of everything but nothing nothing will happen without you so we are very grateful that you are joining us today we try to make things as easy as possible for all of you that's why you will notice there are no tickets no passcodes no nothing just youtube on facebook the same way many people been following us during the year so we want you to have the charizard experience for the high holidays and it's a great honor to be the one providing you with this spiritual experience to begin this year 5782 which by the way is a special year i'm going to talk more about that tomorrow 5782 is a yet of shemitah there is a seven year cycle that we count in the land of israel if you don't know what it is just wait until tomorrow you want to explain explain a little bit more but believe me it's a great great thing uh if this is the first time you're visiting us please remember to subscribe to our channel and also hit the bell so you will be notified every time we go live and every time we upload some amazing content to our uh social media platforms so as we begin this service for the first day of rosh hashanah i realized that our hopes our prayers for the coming year are much more the same as the last year we wish for health recovery and return to normal in the year ahead we pray for an end to the pandemic but recognize that we are god's partners in doing so so god expect us to do our share and that's why you will see that we have an online service this year we feel that this is our little contribution for a quick ending of this pandemic and to keep us all safe so uh i hope you can find a quiet spot in your home this morning where yontif clothes a kippah a talit if you have one and if you don't have a physical copy of the maxor you can get a digital copy uh by visiting www.said winnipeg.ca slash book also we made it very easy www dot said winnipeg dot ca slash book there you can find a pdf copy of the max or so all the page numbers that we are going to call up today you can find them there uh again shenatova let's start with the order of the service with the sound of the shofar on page 85. this is a very important time of our service it's a wake up call you see during the month of elul in fact we're going to continue all the way until the end of sukkot we pray the 27th psalm which starts with the words adonai odi god is my light what a wonderful thing to feel that we have light in our lives do you realize that whenever you have light you can see what is in front of you so you can avoid obstacles if you live in darkness you can't avoid the obstacles so having god's light in our lives is great but this is the interesting thing about light you have to open your eyes to enjoy light doesn't matter how much light you have outside if your eyes are closed you're still going to have challenges and you're still going to hit all the obstacles you have in front of you so the shofar is the sound to help us open our eyes our spiritual eyes so we can let all that light entering our lives so i would like to invite you to rice whatever you are if you have kids around call them up i know kids love the sound of the chauffeur and we are going to begin with this beautiful service of the sounds of the chauffeur we have bill wiseman who is ready here to recite the blessings on page 85. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] ready ah [Music] so you see in the torah we read that rosh hashanah is called yom teruah the day of teruah but teruah is using is used as a generic term in that context we don't really know what was the original sound of that teruah mentioned in the torah but we know that we have three different sounds for the shofar the one we call tequila which is a long one the one we call shivarim which is three sounds and then we have what we call teruah which is this staccato of many different sounds like short sounds so what the rabbis decided to do just in case is to combine the different sounds so eventually if we can mix them up we have better chances to match that original teruah mentioned in the torah that's why we change a little bit the order and the combination of the sounds let's get ready to the second set take [Music] him my what is the show for a hollowed out rum's horn the simplest fallwind instruments it goes back to the earliest days of our ancestors when we were tribes wandering in the vast desert in those days the shofar was an important mode of communication it was revelling time to wake up it was marching orders time to get moving it was a battle cry the enemy is upon us these ancient functions are all applicable to today's celebration it is time for us to wake up to the reality of being creatures in god's creation it's time for us to get moving and begin to work of improving our lives and it's time for us to confront the enemy within the voice complacency that says things are just fine just the way they are foreign [Music] foreign [Music] happy are people who hear the shofar god they know what it is to be near you all day they benefit from your reputation dignified by your righteousness you are the glory of their power through your favor we shall succeed you so much to bill weissman for those wonderful sounds of the shofar just a quick reminder we have also another set of shofar later on in the service and of course tomorrow morning it was going to be the same thing we are going to begin the service with the sounds of the shofar so it's time to move on to our torah service i would like to invite everyone to stay standing as we turn to page 87. this is uh the time to welcome our charizard quartet conducted by justin odwick accompanied by stephen cox to join our brand new cantor leslie emery page 87 cedric sephora the service the torah service [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] [Music] oh [Music] god god is a god both merciful and gracious patient and great in kindness and truth ensuring mercy for thousands of generations tolerating sin transgression and wrong and cleansing people of their guilt [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] god may my prayer to you arrive at a welcome time sovereign in kindness plainful answer me with salvation sure [Laughter] [Music] foreign foreign [Music] page 88. [Music] israel [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] hello [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey [Music] hello [Music] if you 21 verses 1 to 4. and our honorees this morning are alan and gloria cantor one more minute in just a moment i'll be calling them up to the torah as we're getting set up and bonnie how are you doing this morning very well thank you very well good it's so good to have you here and it is so nice to be here with the quartet this morning with justin oddwack mal magarell john anderson kira karasik and stephen cox on the piano and rabbi anybody mask guiding us along and now [Music] we're ready we are ready beautiful so so happy to have bonnie actually we have two bunnies today right absolutely pony champ and then bonnie robinson as bonnie robinson mentioned this morning uh what you didn't get the bony pass to go into shul today [Laughter] we're very fortunate and it just so happens that we have two bonnies who are excellent torah readers and who love contributing to what we do here at charizardic they are a wonderful part of our work here and a wonderful part of our community yeah so if you want if you ever want to read torah you have two options study hard or change your name to bonnie [Laughter] or both or both okay so here we have alan and gloria cantor visiting us on zoom alan and gloria cantor dear congregants they were one of the first congregants to embrace the zoom technology to connect with us where people were very hesitant they didn't know what it was about they jumped at the opportunity to do it and so we are very grateful for everything they do for us and it's a great honor to honor you alan and gloria with the first aliyah on the first order reading of the year so welcome and shana tuva and should i call them up officially let's see alan and gloria can i hear you did you call them up i will they yeah [Music] i [Music] by the way before i forget uh we have the first aliyah is taken from genesis 21 versus one to four and this is going to be taken from page 91 of the maxor and one quick reminder if you don't have the maxwell no problem visit www.saidwinnipeg.ca book and you will find there a pdf version of the maxer let's proceed with the alia and then i want to talk a little bit about what's going on in this story really alan gloria the blessing please oh you're not you're not you have to mute yourself [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] ah [Music] and all the blessings you can imagine for this new year and thank you so much for being there for us every single week we are really blessed to have you as members of congregation sheriff's edict all the best to the two of you thank you very much we'll be back i hope so okay so it's time to continue with the second reading so this is the the interesting thing about this uh let me let me change here and give me one minute this is the the the important thing about this partial you know during rosh hashanah i don't know if you remember from previous years we have three sections during the musa what is called zikranath and shofarot the kingship of god the remembrance of god and then the shofar the three concepts that we have in the in the rosh hashanah liturgy now the between this week today sort of reading and tomorrow sort of reading we are going to cover the three topics the first one this story reading for today is heavily based on the zikr or not concept of the remembrance and the memory uh the fact that god remembers everything we do just you can see that from the beginning of the reading when god remembered sarah and he responds and then sarah finally had a child of her own then later on in this reading we are going to read about the story of hagar and ishmael remember they were they were kicked out of the house and there they were wandering in the desert with no hope no future no nothing and god remembered them and god shows up for them and and god did a great miracle for them so this is a reminder that we should never lose hope never lose faith because even if we are going through struggles we have to remember we have to remember that god always remembers us it's a beautiful concept of this part of the rosh hashanah the zechariah note god that remembers each and one of us let's continue with the the next reading let me change here the name we have larry and evelyn heck do you have to unmute yourself guys and i'm gonna bring you right in here we are joining us from the lake larry and evelyn hecht once we have so many uh people in this service i can see the names that perhaps never been to one of our services so they have no clue who you are we know you well but for many people say who is larry and evelyn heck do they live in the lake no they are just having a nice time there but evelyn was the very first uh female president of congregation charizard so it was an iconic moment of the history of charizardic that mark before and after of what was happening in this room and we are so proud of so many things that uh move forward and push that into the 21st century but evelyn you started that so we are so happy to honor you here and of course larry as well and you are uh dear congregants we are very honored to giving you this the honor of the second aliyah so we are going to call you up in a traditional way leslie please [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] kunai [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] i [Music] ah [Music] [Music] to all of you our fellow congregants and we're so happy to be with you from wherever we are we've been with sheriff's edict for almost 60 years and may it continue for many many more oh man thank you so much for being with us uh today it's great to have you here and we are ready now to move to the third reading i'm gonna have to do some magic here to prepare prepare the next set of readers where where is it here i am you will see this is a technology school but sometimes it takes a little bit of time to bonnie cham thank you so much for your beautiful readings this morning so far and bonnie also is a past president of our synagogue and we are so lucky to have her we are getting ready to welcome gustavo zentner and fanny levy yes uh i got them i got them leslie and we've got i got it this is a gustavo and funny are actually it's uh it's the next chapter of a history that perhaps evelyn started because now uh they represent so many uh things that charizardic does and let me explain a little bit because they came from argentina many years ago many years ago let me bring them here how many years ago was that one funny uk 24 i think it's counting on 24 years and you show you saw basically the welcoming face of sheriff's edict when you came you got involved you became part of the congregation uh you went through ceremonies here with your girls having the bad mitzvah here at the sheriff's edict and now funny is part of the charizard board board of directors and who knows one day she might be the next female president of charizard which by the way bonnie champ who just read the torah so beautiful for us he was also a president here at the charizard so we have a history of women power here bringing great things at the synagogue so who knows who knows but we are very happy that you were able to join us uh and that it's uh it's we are very blessed that you accepted this honor and it's our great pleasure to invite you to recite the blessing for the third aliyah leslie is gonna call you up the right way um [Music] [Music] [Music] we're on page 92 for the third reading uh again bonnie chum is going to continue this beautiful reading for us genesis chapter 21 verse 13 to 21. amen [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] he [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign thank you for the honor from our family to yours in the entire congregation the happy and healthy and sweet roger now thank you so much to the two of you is really really really blessing to to have you here sharing this moment with all of us and all the best to you shanatova well it's time to continue now with the second scroll but before we do that i just want to be sure if you were following along the reading because that towards the end of the third aliyah is one of my favorite part of the reading exactly what it says that hagar and ishmael there was wandering they were wandering in the desert they were thirsty hagar was desperate so she prays to god and then the miracle happens but this is the thing what was the miracle is that god opened her eyes and she saw the water he doesn't say that god actually miraculously send water to the desert the porsche implies that the water was always there except that her eyes were closed so this is exactly what i mentioned before the sound of the shofar sometimes we need the show for we need the prayers we need coming to synagogue to have somebody to let us know to remind us that life is full of blessings we have so much goodness around you but you know what our eyes are closed so we don't enjoy it so it's really really my my wish my hope that these services that we are bringing your way will serve as a spiritual awakening so you can open your eyes and you can realize all the blessing you have in your life sometimes you don't have to look much far all you have to do is look around in fact do it right now look right look to the right i see the choir here for example look to the front i see leslie i see bill let's see tally you see the bonus i look to the left i see marvin and i feel blessed i feel blessed to be here with such wonderful people do the same at home look to the right look to the left look in front of you maybe behind you and be grateful for everything and everyone you have in your life let's continue now i would like to invite everyone to rise so we can lift untai that's the first scroll of torah [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] you may be seated as we turn to page 98 page 98 we have the reading of the master for the first day of rosh hashanah this is going to be taken from numbers chapter 29 verses one to six and it's just a biblical description of how the festival of rosh hashanah which by the way is called uh yom teruah was celebrated in biblical times the time when we used to present sacrifices but we still read it as a reminder the way it used to be and sometimes to reflect on all the changes and how we transform this festival into something that is so meaningful and it touched our souls so deeply so ah bonnie chan once again yeshir kojec to you what a beautiful beautiful reading beautiful reading so far but there is more because bonnie is going to read for us the the muftier but our honoree who is going to read the after eye in a few minutes is another bunny bonnie robinson who also has been with synagogue charizadek for many years she's uh an amazing turtle reader after a reader and governor you probably remember bonnie if you're being if you come to our daily minions she doesn't once a week for us and whenever we are desperate for somebody to save us because somebody couldn't make it who is always there for us bonnie robinson so again you see we have so many reasons here at the sheriff to feel blessed for people like bonnie champ bonnie robinson and so many other people that uh help us during the year so it's a great great honor and pleasure to give this master aliyah bonnie robinson who is going to be called up by leslie the proper way miriam [Music] maftirah again page 98. [Music] [Music] amazing [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] both bonnies thank you so much for being here once again and with that we are ready now to continue with lifting untying this second scroll of torah and for that i would like to invite everyone to rise [Music] torah [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] for guiding us so capably through our tourist service to dr bonnie cham for reading from the torah squirrel so beautifully this morning and to our quartet as well as our accompanist this morning thank you all so much we're going to continue now with a prayer for healing amisha barack prayer there are so many in this world in need of healing this morning we won't read all of the names directly but we do ask that if there's someone that you're praying for if there's someone that you're concerned about for mental health physical health and well-being keep them in your heart or in your mind while we sing this prayer together we're going to sing shibarak prayer by debbie friedman [Music] the [Music] may the source of strength who bless the ones before us help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing and let us say [Music] the [Music] body and let us [Music] i'm in and now i know bonnie is ready for her half torah and i look forward to hearing it bonnie whenever you're ready you'll be able to find our haftarah on page 99 in the mah sor we're in samuel 1 beginning at chapter 2 from verses 1 to 10. baruch a [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] wonderful reading oh let me go back to my station if you're looking for some inspiration bonnie robinson published a book this year she has been learning to play the ukulele better and better she even wrote a song yeah so you never know what you can do with a year so yeah so she's a total reader after a reader governor musicians she's a great many author wow keep adding to the rest of me very nice yeah i was one of the the lucky ones who read the book and it's wonderful thank you leslie yashikoya for your help thank you so much to everyone uh thank you to alan and gloria cantor thank you to larry and evelyn hecht thank you to gustavo and funny gustavo's ending on funny levy our torah honorees for this first safer and thank you pony cham thank you bonnie robinson for your amazing contribution reading torah and have torah this morning and we have so much so much else coming up just needs to to set up here we're going to return the torah scrolls to the ark at this time page 106 [Music] [Music] r [Music] page 109 [Music] it's [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] again now that the ark is closed you may be seated just for a minute we have a few announcements for you first and before all the announcements once again thank you so much to the amazing team that we have here at the sheriff's edict cantor leslie thank you so much for your contribution the wonderful cherished quartet conducted by the one and only justin odwick thank you so much we have the soprano kira alto mal and the bass mr anderson that's the closest to a base that i want to do today and accompanist stephen cox thank you so much guys your music is angelical as uh you will i don't know if you're following the messages but everybody loves what you do so do we i thank you marvin polanski audio visual director and also technical arts director he controls all the technology here in the sanctuary we also have a huge huge thank you to robert dirich and lena lakshin they are at the office now uh providing some technical support if you have any problems with the with the stream or anything you can call the office and they're going to try to guide you and to troubleshoot you so you can follow our services but so far seems to be going pretty good so far seems to be going pretty well then we are so so happy about that if you haven't done so please subscribe to our channels this is just a little bit of who you can get here at the charizardic we have online services every day of the year twice a day if it's a weekday it's 7 30 a.m and 6 p.m on fridays it's 7 30 a.m and 5 30 p.m on saturdays 10 a.m and 6 p.m on sundays 9 a.m and 6 p.m so you can join our minions every day and you can also expect great content that gets uploaded to our channels all the time so if you want to be notified about every time that we do something here in our platforms remember to subscribe and if you're in youtube hit the bell so you will be notified every time we do one of those things now you probably if you're following the chat you probably noticed that there are uh some messages coming from charizard number one you will see is uh the opportunity for you to download the maxwell it's very important we really want you to be a participator not spectator when we are in front of a screen the you know we are the temptation to just sit relax and see what's going on what's going on there is huge because that's what we usually do when we sit in front of a screen unless you live in my house when we try to something everybody's talking but usually people sit in front of the screen nobody say a word and enjoy whatever is coming to you this is a different kind of experience this is like coming to synagogue where you sing and you participate so i hope you've been doing that and if you have when i have the full experience you need the master you need the words to follow along so you can download as winnipeg.ca slash book but you also probably saw an invitation for everyone to make a donation to the synagogue and that's also very important this year we move away from the model of selling tickets so the only revenue we have this year is thanks to your donations so whenever you feel comfortable doing so if you want you can wait until uh the fest the festival is over you can visit as at willypic.ca hhd donate to make a contribution so we can keep going strong and to bring great great things your way anything else leslie i think you're doing great anything you want to add i'm loving following all of the messages on the chat and please we do read them and we do get them so thank you so much for sending such positivity our way and we appreciate you joining us this year for rosh hashanah and now we have a lot going forward to do it's actually one of my favorite points in the service coming up rabbi is it it is probably because it's me doing it you know what though this is an iconic piece it's like one you know there's moments where you think of rosh hashanah this is a moment that i think of rosh hashanah this moment that rabbi anibal mass leads us in the hiney prayer i'm going to start moving to the to the back of the sanctuary of course and basically the hinnani is a very simple statement but very powerful at the same time this is usually reserved for the leader of the service it's just to say hindeni here i am but you have to remember where the word is coming from the context of the word hyundai you will see in the torah every time that god calls up one of the important characters of the bible to do something in this world they answered god with the words hinony here i am ready god to do your will so this is what we are all trying to say here hidden here we are for you doing our best to open your spiritual eyes so you can receive the full scope of the light of god hidden page 113 thank you leslie if you were physically in the room when rabbi anibal walked down the aisles everybody would stand as he walked past and i invite you to imagine yourself in the room wherever you would be seated wherever you would be comfortable if you're a front row person a front row if you're more towards the back towards the back and arise with rabbi and eval as he leads us through this beautiful prayer on page 113. [Music] he [Music] [Music] your [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] holy [Music] [Music] again [Music] is [Music] [Music] hello [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] they [Music] i [Music] is [Music] ah [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] belongs thank you beautiful you may be seated we continue page 114 with the hatsika dish [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] how does it feel that this is your first time singing this hi holidays nusa it's surreal it is and it is beautiful i'm so grateful to be here with everyone i keep thinking how you know when well boy i'm going to age myself now 30 years ago 25 years ago i was back sitting with my zetas ivy and rhoda and my mom and my sisters back in the auditorium and now at this moment i'm here and it is beautiful to be here with you all this morning and to have the honor of davening with you all and leading you all in these prayers thank you so much we are blessed to have you thank you something wonderfully and it's uh time to sing even more now as we move on into the amidah this is the time where i announced announced before that we are going to have the three components malchuyod zikr not in chauffeur rot it's part of the musa amida but everything starts on page 115 we are going to do in the hakadusha that means we are going to start singing together and then eventually after the le dorvador a few pages from now we're going to have the opportunity to continue silently and that would be your opportunity to include your own prayers for this new year 57-82 page 115 uh we stand as the arc is open for the amiga [Music] [Music] [Music] ah [Music] [Music] [Music] m [Music] [Music] [Music] page 116 top of the page socrates heim the ark is closed and after the ark is closed you may be seated [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] i am [Music] um [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] second half of page 117 the door of the door [Music] god [Music] god [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Music] ah [Music] [Music] i [Music] foreign [Music] [Laughter] [Music] amen [Music] doors [Music] please continue silently from pages 118 to 133 remember you can use the hebrew the english or you can also choose to use your own words of prayer the most important thing this part of the service is for you to have a private audience with the creator of the world what happened at that time is between you and god you can share with god your joys your sorrows your wishes for this year 57-82 let's take the next few minutes to continue in silent prayer once you finish your prayer feel free to be seated i hope you're enjoying the service if you are remember you can always give us the thumbs up on youtube on facebook we always like to count those after the the service but only if you like the service but if you do give us the thumbs up um that's one way i know we are we are we're receiving great great messages here as well and also after the service is over if you want to get in touch with us because i know that in these crazy days that we are living sometimes that a synagogue with online presence can fulfill the needs of many people that they are geographically somewhere else we are doing we've been doing that for the last year and a half almost two years and we are so so proud of ourselves that we can provide spiritual guidance of people that they are actually not living in winnipeg so if you want to get closer to us please send us an email at hello at nzwinnipeg.c8 let us know more about you we are eager to know who you are and what you like about our services and how can we help you to satisfy your spiritual needs we are here for you and we have one more announcement before we move into the uneternity token that has something to do with the show for am i right leslie you're right unfortunately we couldn't take the shofar all the way around the world but if you live in winnipeg we've got you covered today if you'd like to hear the shofar sounded in person we do have our shofar blowing kabura members appearing at multiple locations in the city today at 2pm so you can go and hear the shofar sounded in person you'll be able to find them at the parking lot of the chairs edict the asper campus the shaftsbury retirement residence and the portsmouth retirement residence you can hear the sounding of the shofar from the comfort of your vehicle and have that feeling that you feel when you hear the shofar sounded as well speaking of people finding there we are here online one of my favorite things to see is when a former winnipegger finds their way back to share his edict over youtube it's like magic you know and you can come and find us from anywhere and visit anytime we're here twice daily as you know and it's an honor to be able to serve you in this way so let's continue now with the order of the service we're on page 135 for the unetani token as the ark is open please rise [Music] oh [Music] [Music] peace [Music] [Music] [Music] page 137 we have rosh hashanah in fact the united tokev has a second part that is going to be sung tomorrow the second day of rosh hashanah we try to alternate different styles and different texts of the max or some between day one and day two you have a complete picture of this rosh channel liturgy that is so rich and so beautiful and the first version of the rosh hashanah is on page 137 and i don't know if you got it understood if you understood a little bit of what's going on at the united talk if this is when we realize that god is actually looking at us very closely it's almost like single singling got out from a crowd and that could be very frightening well you see if this is like like life everything depends how you look at things because what somebody says you that could be frightening or you could also say thank you somebody noticed me this is the approach of what you should have to all these prayers in rosh hashanah it's not that god is pointing at you to make you afraid god is pointing at you to let you know how important you are how special you are and how loved you are but rosh hashanah page 137 [Music] the [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] um [Music] um [Music] [Music] much [Music] the repentance prayer and charity word of the evil of the sentence as the stephen cox thank you so much your sound is outstanding i hope you will have a chance to check the messages because there is a lot of love for you guys there so thank you for all what you're doing this is the time for the sermon right now and this year we decided to do something a little bit different usually i will stand in the center of the bhima i will tell you a silly joke and then i will present my my my message don't worry you're still going to have the silly joke and the message but instead of me standing on the center of the bema we are trying something different because sherry's eric is an inclusive welcoming and affirming synagogue so we wanted to extend the reach of the messages that we present to everybody looking at the chat actually this confirms my suspicion we have lots of people from all over the world some people were born speaking english some people like me were not so this year the message i came a few days before i pre-recorded my message and everything is going to go out with subtitles just to be sure that everybody can capture and can benefit for the special message that i prepared for you and as i mentioned before it's about the between god and our imperfections i am very pleased to present this year this rosh hashanah 5782 first day of rosh hashanah message just before rosh hashanah a team of terrorists invades the shul and takes the rabbi the cantor and the sure president hostage hours later the board of directors stands tough they won't give them a million dollars not a getaway car not a helicopter the terrorists gather the three hostages in a corner and inform them that things look bad and they are going to have to shoot them nevertheless to show that they are not really a bad bunch they will grant his each hostage one wish please says the rabbi for the last two months i've been working on my rosh hashanah sermon what a ways to die now without sharing it before an audience i'll die happily if you let me recite my sermon it's only two and a half hours long tops the terrorists promised to grant their wish please says the counter i finally got the rosh hashanah musaf just right what a ways to die and not sing it to an audience it's only about three hours long then i'll die happily the terrorists promise to allow the cantor's wish too and finally they turn to the shul president please says the president with tears in his eyes shoot me first so i want to talk to you today about nobody is perfect i remember this vocal coach i used to have that will repeat some catchy phrases in an effort to encourage his students for example he used to say proper preparation prevents poor performance i guess that sounds cool and it was one way to convince me to practice in between classes but he also used to say practice doesn't make perfect it makes permanent and then he explained see you see you have probably heard nobody is perfect so if practice makes perfect but nobody is perfect so why bother practice and he also used to say when we practice something regularly it becomes part of us but it won't necessarily make us any better and yet many people live their lives obsessed with perfection today as we stand in front of god during the high holidays it's easy to bring back that fixation with perfection when we don't perform perfectly it's easy to think that god is far from us i blew it god will never have anything to do with me or i know god won't even hear my prayers not with a mistake i've made and as a rabbi i must admit that sometimes religion pushes people down you can find sources that may seem to imply that if you turn your back on god god will turn his back on you if you make poor choices don't expect god to bail you out it was your own fault after all as an example the great maimonides said your iniquities have made a separation between you and your god but that statement is much like a misleading title in the newspaper unless you keep reading the rest of the teaching from maimonides you will go home thinking that god won't have anything to do with you the truth is when we fall god doesn't turn away from us but instead god comes running towards us when we messed things up god doesn't say too bad you had your chance god comes after us with a greater passion what my monitors is saying is that we take distance from god not the other way around 57 81 has been a very very challenging year for many of us this has been the most difficult year of our lives a year that has added so much to our plates that it has made it very difficult to do things the way we envisioned an especially difficult year to aim for perfection a year that made us lose our temper more often than normal a year then added high levels of stress a year that pushed so many people to cope with loneliness and separation anxiety the irony is that for those of us who strive for perfection we need control and this past year has shown us how little control we had a very sobering fact last high holidays we connected online we prayed we made resolutions and we expected different things here we are a year later and it feels as though nothing has changed we feel like we failed to ourselves do me a favor don't beat yourself up if you feel like you didn't perform perfectly all the time because god doesn't want you to be perfect in fact god loves imperfect people you don't believe me in the siddur and in the maxwell we pray to elohee abraham to the god of abraham the god of isaac and the god of jacob i can understand how we pray to the god of abraham abraham was after all the father of her faith i can also understand how we pray to the god of isaac as we read in the high holidays in the rosh hashanah torah reading isaac was extremely obedient even willing to be sacrificed but when we pray to the god of jacob that doesn't make a lot of sense to me jacob was a cheater a trickster a deceiver he stole his brother's birthright with a plate of lentils and then his brother's blessing with a sophisticated disguise jacob was known for making poor choices yet with aven god of abraham goddess isaac god of jacob what were the rabbis trying to teach us by choosing to open their media this way very very interesting the message is that god is saying to us every day three times a day i'm not just the god of perfect people i'm not just the god of people that never make mistakes i'm also the god of people that have failed i'm also the god of people that have made mistakes i'm also the god of people that have had a difficult past it's interesting that later in jacob's life after he changed his ways became a better person god changed his name from jacob to israel that was to show his new beginning his new self so i find it odd that the rabbis didn't start the media with the words god of abraham god of isaac and god of israel that seems to be to make more sense to me after all that was his new name that was a better name but no the rabbis on purpose kept us as the god of abraham isaac and jacob as a daily reminder that we don't serve a god of perfect people but a god of imperfect people too i believe that god is showing us the way to live happier and more fulfilled lives the same way that god understands that we can't be perfect we should be more considerate of other people's imperfection we go around expecting people to go easy on us do you know the kind of year i had do you know how much do i have on my plate do you know the stress of my daily life and the truth is we don't have to know the details to be kind and considerate the fact is all of us all of us have challenges and are dealing with things kindness and understanding should always be part of our lives no matter how difficult life may be we need to go around with a good heart my friends today is rosh hashanah a new beginning a new opportunity today god is running towards you god already knows every mistake you'd ever make and despite that god doesn't love you any less god is not just the god of abraham but also the god of jacob god still believes in you you still have an amazing future in front of you for the new year believe in yourself even with all your imperfections don't give up and be kind to yourself and everyone around you shanatova um thank you so much leslie thank you i hope you like this uh i know some people will miss the fact that it's not me from the middle of the bema but i thought the opportunity to reach even more people and to make the message really clear for everyone uh was worth it also the extra work to put the subtitles to every word i said of course yeah then i was playing myself in my studio trying to put a caption saying what is this guy saying i can't understand the word i'm just kidding just kidding just kidding and we are about to continue now on page 150 we have a beautiful prayer called haiyum that means today and it's another opportunity for us to be mindful and to realize what's really going on this day of rosh hashanah the day of divine trial but also a day of opportunity a day of opportunities to strengthen a relationship with god a god that loves people like you like me with or without imperfection page 150 please rise for hayyom tiempsenum [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] amen [Music] [Music] oh [Music] ah [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] oh [Music] amen as the
