All Right girls come on in here all right now I know why you're really here it was for the breakfast in there so are we got anyone else back in there mark I need I need a bouncers what I need back in there all right guys we're ready to start and as I'm starting let me just make welcome everyone who's watching just a couple of announcements I'm getting ready to fly to Los Angeles after this study and I'm gonna be doing a one passion conference in Tustin California which is somewhere in the Greater Los Angeles area at Mission Bible Church and if you're out there we've got a hundred pastors over one hundred pastors already signed up to meet with me and I'm gonna be doing a three-day conference on evangelistic preaching how to preach the gospel as an expository a conference we've got a lot of expository are not evangelistic in the pulpit and calling people to faith in Christ so that's this conference is going to focus on that and then you go to our web page and learn more about it but would love for you to be a part of that conference and I'm gonna be speaking at UCLA on Friday night and if you're out in that area especially if you're a college student please find me Grace on campus and I'll be speaking there so also while I'm thinking about it if you're not a subscriber to expositor magazine we produce a magazine four times a year once a quarter and this present issue that just came out a couple of days ago is called the preaching and the power of the Holy Spirit and how we need the power of the Holy Spirit to enable us to to minister God's words we can't do it in the arm of the flesh what we have to do it in the power of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit works through the man who opens the book and ministers it so if you if you're not a subscriber please do it it doesn't cost very much at all I have an article in it every week jump I mean every issue John MacArthur has an article every issue and we have a variety of people from al Mohler to John Piper to mark Dever to whoever I mean it's a notable line-up of Bible teachers that contribute substantial articles so this is not a devotional this is really getting down into the into the roots of how to preach the Bible Minister the Word of God so just wanted to make mention of that so we're in Romans chapter 6 so I want you to turn to Romans chapter 6 and this is going to be a great study Lord willing because the passage is so great and if you're jotting notes but the title I've put on this is what happened to you and we're going to be looking at verses 2 through 7 if we can get through this so and the reason it takes so long going through Romans is just like every verse every phrase is just so rich and robust with truth that we don't want to leave anything on the table so we want to look into all of this but I want to begin reading I'll start reading in verse 1 but we're going to pick it up in the middle of verse 2 what shall we say then are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase may it never be how shall we who died to sin still live in it or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death therefore we have been buried with him referring to Christ through baptism into death so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father so we too might walk in newness of life for if we have become United with him in the likeness of his death certainly we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection knowing this that our old self was crucified with him in order that our body of sin might be done away with so that we would no longer be slaves to sin for he who has died is freed from sin so I'm calling this what happened to you occasionally we'll run into someone we haven't seen in a while and they'll just look very different it may be they've gone on a diet and they've lost a lot of weight and we'll just say you know what happened to you maybe they've had surgery could be like Kent here and it's grown out of beard and I just want to say so what happened to you yeah he's been to the dermatologist and been zapped and just like so what happened to you and because the change is so different and you just don't even look like yourself anymore well the same is true spiritually because when you believe in Christ there is a dramatic change that takes place in your life and when others now see you and hear you and observe you they ought to see such a change in your life that they would say what happened to you well our passage that we're going to look at tells us seven things that happen to us and this is very important and just by way of introduction let me just give you some initial observations in verses 2 through 7 and then we're gonna walk through it systematically but number one this has already happened ok if you're a believer if you're a Christian this has already happened all right this is not happening ongoing present tense it's not future tense this will one day happen in your spiritual life when you reach a certain level or plateau it's not saying that this all happened in your past already the second thing is it happened when you were born again when you were born again there was a radical dramatic change in your life the third thing that I would tell you is that this all happened at the same time everything that we're gonna look at here in verses 2 3 7 all happened in your past the moment you were regenerated and and as we look at verses 2 through 7 this isn't like a multiple choice and and five out of the seven happened in your life or others of you two out of the seven it's actually all or nothing and if you're a believer all of these happened in your life and the fourth thing that I would tell you is is it produces a significant transformation not a small a significant transformation of of your life and the fifth thing that I would tell you it's all because of your union with Christ that you are now in Christ and Christ is in you and whatever is true of Christ becomes true of you as it relates to what he accomplished on your behalf so let's just walk through these seven things I'd like to cover all seven of these I may move through this little faster than normal and then we'll have some discussion at the end you just whisper it will never happen oh you only got five well that's all there is oh wait a minute number six is there are seven realities that we're going to look at here can't you can you can look at the card right there can't you're looking at it upside down as you turn it around alright here we go seven this is your life this is what happened to you all right number one we died to sin you see that second half of verse two how shall we who died to sin still live in it it's it is a statement of fact it's in what we call well it's really put in the form of a question but it's a question that's making a statement the we refers to only believers it refers to all believers how shall we who died to sin now we looked at this last week one thing I failed to draw to your attention that I want to make sure that I put before you is that this death is a death to the reign of sin in your life and the previous at the last verse of chapter 5 verse 21 talks about sin reigned in death do you see that we died what died is we died to the reign of sin we will continue to sin as Christians I want to be crystal clear this is not teaching any perfectionism but at the same time there was a death to sin and the death to sin was not a death to individual axis sin the death was to the tyranny of sin over your life the the the Dominion of sin over your life the government and the reign of sin over your life that once had you in a death grip and and you could not live in any other way other than to pursue sin so you died to that and that is a big deal this happened at a specific point in the past and it's it's an heiress tense verb which probably means nothing to you but it's translated as a past tense verb and to answer the question how shall we who died to sin still live in it the answer is it's impossible if you died to the reign of sin you cannot continue to live in it and to live in it means to to swim in it it means to be immersed in it to be again under the death grip of sin and this is the habitual practice of your sin of your life is to live uh sin it is totally completely impossible because you have died to sin that that is just a fact so that's that's where he begins number one and we talked about this last time we died to sin second we were baptized into Christ you'll note at the beginning of verse three or do you not know and when he says or do you not know he's saying hey if you're breathing you probably know this this is common knowledge this is Christianity 101 this is kindergarten level stuff if you're in Christ you know this and so it when he says or do you not know he is implying let me remind you of what you already know that all of us the US is the same as the we in verse 2 and and in verse 1 the US refers to all believers it refers to only believers and you'll you'll note when he says all of us he's talking about every single believer so there's no exceptions to this do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus let's just stop right there all of us have been baptized into Christ Jesus if you're a believer you were at a point in time in your past baptized into Christ Jesus now there's in-house debate among conservative Bible believing scholars as to whether or not this refers to water baptism or spirit baptism I want to go on record as saying there's not a drop of water in this chapter okay this is all talking about spirit baptism now water baptism will be a picture of this reality but this has nothing to do with water baptism this refers to spirit baptism which is mentioned in 1st Corinthians 12 verse 13 and is mentioned in Colossians 2:12 and in Ephesians 4 verse 5 spirit baptism is when we are placed spiritually we could even say mystically into Christ such that we are now so identified with Christ that certain things are true that we will be looking at and I'll go ahead and just kind of tip my hand or Paul's hand on this such that when Jesus died we were in Christ and we died to sin when Jesus was buried we were in Christ in the mind of God and we were buried with Christ and when Jesus was raised from the dead we were in Christ Jesus and we too were raised to live a brand new life we died with Christ and so we're dead to our old life that's just a fact and we have been raised with Christ to live a brand new life that is a fact because we have been baptized into Christ and that means we have been submerged into Christ we have been placed into Christ we have been positioned into Christ we have been immersed into Christ and this little preposition says baptized in Christ Jesus that doesn't mean baptized in the name of Christ Jesus that little preposition in is preposition the primary meaning is in two we have been baptized into Christ Jesus for example Kent has an elevator out in the lobby and when I say I can stand in front of that elevator if I hit the button the door opens I have to step into that elevator and now whatever floor that elevator goes to is where I go because I'm in the elevator the elevator goes down I go down the elevator goes up I go up so we have been placed into Christ and when he died we died and when he was raised we were raised and I realized that this is metaphorical but I want you to know it's real it's not just philosophical cloud bank type stuff this is as real as you and I are sitting in this room that you were taken by God 2,000 years back and placed into Christ and you were baptized into Christ Jesus you were made to be one with Christ and this is the doctrine this is a major massive doctrine called union with Christ Sinclair Ferguson just came out with a brand new book that's like 800 pages thick it's called some pastors and teachers and it's a collection of all of his theological articles over the last 40 years as professor of systematic theology he's got a whole chapter in there on union with Christ and the influence in his life was another Scottish professor named John Murray we have his commentary on Romans and many other works and John Murray says the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation his union with Christ now that's a pretty enormous statement because when you read Paul's epistles this little prepositional phrase in him in Christ just just read Ephesians one and two and try to count how many times he says in him in Christ we were chosen in Christ we were predestined in Christ we were redeemed in Christ we were forgiven in Christ we were made alive in Christ we have been enthroned with Christ in heavenly places this is union with Christ and here's the reality Christ is now in you and you are now in Christ it's a two-fold union you are in Christ crisis in you you could not be any more identified with the Lord Jesus Christ from the inside out and you are intimately identified with Christ and you now share a common spiritual life with Christ for example John 15 verse 11 these things I have spoken unto you that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be made complete John 14:27 peace I offer unto you peace not as the world gives my peace I give unto you it's it's not a peace like what Jesus had it's the very piece that was in the Lord Jesus Christ now pours into our life the very same joy that was in the Lord Jesus Christ now pours into our life it's not a joy like his like he reaches on the shelf and grabs another bottle of joy that's the same as the joy he had noticed the very same joy that was in him now pours into us because he is in us and we are in him his life is flowing into our life it's a very real spiritual reality and so this is our union with Christ Colossians 3 verse 3 says our life is hidden with Christ means where our life is just wrapped up with Christ and in Colossians 3 verse 1 it says we've been raised with Christ in Colossians 3:4 it's even more succinct it says Christ is our life so whatever spiritual life you have going on inside of you it's the life of Jesus Christ imparted by the Holy Spirit that now is dynamically alive in you you don't have to pray for it it's already a reality because you have been baptized into Christ now there are times we experience more joy or less joy there are times weeks it's more peace or less peace but the reality is Christ is already in us with the reality of all this it's just a statement of a fact so that's the second thing we were baptized into Christ you were the Spirit of God has placed you into Christ and has placed you into the body of Christ third third truth we were baptized into Jesus death now we've already talked about this and there's a little bit of overlap in a few these places but I just want to make sure that as we move through these verses that we get it all at the end of verse three is what I want you to see that we have been baptized into his death do you see this we have been baptized into his death this baptism is not water baptism it is spirit baptism the work of the Holy Spirit we have been baptized immersed identified with into his death so when Jesus died and we were baptized into him his death was also our death and we died to our old life what your life was before you became a believer you've now died that's just a fact you want to pray for it it's a reality that old man that old person that you once were has died and there was a funeral and the casket is in the ground and it's over Galatians 2 verse 20 says Paul says I have been crucified with Christ and he'll repeat that in this in this very chapter in verse 5 he as we've been united with him in the likeness of his death and in verse six he says our old self was crucified with him the one thing that is continually repeated in this cluster of verses is our identity with the death of Christ when he died for sin we died to sin when he died for sin we died to sin and when we died to sin I mean we died to the rain and the rule and the authority that sin once had over our life sin was our old master and we obeyed our old master and that is what verse 16 says do you not know when you present yourself to someone as slaves for obedience you were slaves of the one whom you obey either of sin resulting in death or of obedience resulting in righteousness we lived our life obeying sin before we were converted before we were born again and the moment we were born again we died to that relationship that we had to our old master and we no longer now have to obey sin we once had to obey sin we no longer have to obey sin now there we will continue to sin but that is unnecessary though we do it it's like obeying your old boss that you don't work for anymore he can still ask you to go get a cup of coffee but you don't have to go get that cup of coffee because you don't work for him anymore you're under new management yeah you have a new master the Lord Jesus Christ so we were baptized into Christ dead and Jesus actually died can we agree to that alright you actually died can we agree to that you died and just as real a manner as Christ died that was not figurative when Jesus died that that wasn't symbolic when Christ died that wasn't analogous when Christ died that was reality Christ died in the same manner you and I died that's why salvation is such a big deal that's why what happened to you like there has been a break now from your past and you are no longer living for sin you are now living for a new master because you have died to sin all right the point has been made now number four you were buried with Jesus look at the beginning of verse four therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death now why does the Bible make such a big deal about the burial of Jesus I can understand easily the death of Christ should be emphasized and the resurrection of Christ should be emphasized what is the significance of the burial of Christ and Paul will make this also in 1st Corinthians 15:3 and for the significance of the burial of Christ is that he actually died upon the cross he wasn't unconscious he wasn't asleep he didn't he didn't swoon into an unconscious state and they would just shake him and arouse him on the third day and he would resuscitate and open his eyes and and wake up no he actually died upon that cross therefore on the day it was not a resuscitation and it was not awaking up from a three-day nap it was a powerful miraculous resurrection of the dead from Christ and the burial of Christ is validation and documentation that he really actually died so the resurrection was the miracle that God performed it's the ultimate apologetic well for verse 4 to say we have been buried with him through baptism into his death the significance of that for us is the same it is to validate and authenticate that we actually really died with Christ there was a real death that took place in our spiritual lives when we believed in Christ because we were in Christ and when he died we died and it was so real that we died upon the cross that Paul mentions yeah and we've even been buried with Christ that that old life is over that old life has been buried that there is no resurrection of that old life it's dead it's gone it's ancient history it's behind you it's over we were buried with Christ in Colossians 2:12 says having been buried with him in Baptism and again that spirit baptism I think this is one reason why we do baptized by immersion because it best pictures being placed as you're placed into the water you are being buried pictures being buried with Christ and when you are brought up out of the water it pictures the next thing we're gonna look at you've been resurrected with Christ and raised from the dead so this leads us now to number five we were we were resurrected with Jesus that that is at the end of verse 4 and verse 5 so he goes on in verse 4 to say so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father and of course Christ was raised from the dead and he tells us how Christ was raised from the dead he says through the glory of the Father and that is a synonymous expression for the power of the father it was a glorious outshining of the power of God that raised Jesus from the dead and broke the shackles of death notice what it says so we - now the we refers to the same we as verse 1 verse 2 the same us as verse 3 the same we as the beginning of verse 4 please note that the the trail here through this passage we're not talking about the whole world we're talking about only believers in Jesus Christ he says we - now that word - is important because that tells us we too have been raised from the dead there has been a resurrection that's taking place in our life and it is in an entirely new life it's not the old life resurrected it is a totally different life that has been raised so he says we so so we too might walk in newness of life walk he refers to our daily lifestyle where there ever meets the road one foot in front of another it talks about our walking spiritually through this world talks about following Christ on the narrow path that leads to life but what I want you to specially notice that the end of verse 4 it says in of life that word newness means new of a totally different kind now in the Greek language there are two different words that are used for time one refers to just past or refers to chronology another refers to a totally new kind of something that's just totally brand new that's the root word that's used here this is a brand new life this isn't the old stevelawson with a plus on his F that this isn't the old stevelawson with with sugar and salt added this isn't my old life now with a little more octane this is a totally completely different life that is in me it is now the life of Jesus Christ himself that is being worked out in my life so the point is it's just radically different this this word for new it's not new in time it's new and quality it's new in in kind it is a resurrection life it is eternal life as something I never had something you never had previous it is abundant life I was previously dead in trespasses and sin and now I have been raised with Christ to an entirely new life and it it shows in my walk it shows in my daily conduct it shows in this new pattern and direction in my life no I'll still stub my toe and trip and fall I'll still veer out of the center the narrow paths I'll still commit individual acts of sin but I am NOT going in the old direction anymore and I'm not under the old master anymore and I'm not living in sin anymore I am now under new a new master headed in a new direction with a whole new life inside of me it has to come out it has to be seen that's why I'm saying it's a dramatic change that is brought about in a person's life it's a big deal so he goes on to say in verse 5 for if we have become United with him in the likeness of his death that if should be most properly translated since it's a statement of fact since as far as our understanding of what he is saying here since we have become United with him in the likeness of his death and we have because we've been baptized into Christ and we've been baptized into his death he says certainly and and there there is a note of a bhoot certainty about this this has happened we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection which means we have been spiritually raised from the grave of our old manner of life and we now have a new life with a new walk and this is a statement of fact now there will be an ongoing struggle and Romans 7 will talk about that so it's not like we're just skipping to glory and there's no struggling with sin because we will still wrestle with temptation and we will still have to resist the devil and we will still find ourselves in spiritual warfare and we will still have to discipline ourselves for the purpose of godliness so all of that will continue in our life in fact that's one evidence that you really are saved because you weren't you weren't fighting it before you were saved you were just going with the flow you were like a dead fish floating downstream you were just going with the flow of this evil world system you were a part of the system and you were a bang your old master the fact now that there is a struggle is actually evidence that you're in the kingdom now that you have a new life that is fighting against this this old this old desire for sin so we come now to number six we were crucified with Jesus that's at the first two-thirds of verse six and we've already talked about this but Paul circles back to this so we're gonna circle back to this and he states it in in more demonstrative language at the end of verse three says we were baptized into his death but and in verse 5 we were reunited with him in the likeness of his death but verse 6 is even stronger he uses the word crucified so he's like driving a nail into this argument so notice how verse 6 begins knowing this like you know this it shouldn't be something new and this word know is a word that means an experiential knowledge it's not just that between your ears you know this it's down in your heart you know this you have experienced this you know with inner certainty in your soul this is true this isn't just a box to check oh yeah yeah I sign off on the doctrinal statement yes this is true yes this is true no you have experienced this in your life you know the reality of this in your life that's what this word knowing indicates knowing this that our old self and the word self here is a Greek word anthropos we get Anthropologie means man the old man who you once were that old man in your BC days before Christ knowing this that our old man was crucified that's in the past it's already happened now there will be other verses that we'll be looking at in the near future that tell us we must daily die to self and daily die to sin so this whole thing isn't over I mean we're not just cruising into glory but this refers to the governing principle and power of sin that once governed and controlled our life that old man that old life that you once lived that old man that you just that you once were god it's as though when those Roman soldiers were there at the cross it was as if they laid you out on that same cross beam with Jesus and you were on top of him and he was under you and you were so identified with him that when they lifted up the cross and put it in the ground they were not 1 but there were 2 people on that cross and when they nailed Jesus to that cross you were nailed to that cross and you when he died you died and what you died to was your old life and the power of sin over your old life you're now dead to that he says in order you were crucified with him in order that our body of sin might be done away with and there there's much in-house discussion as to what is this body of sin I take it to mean just our old sinful flesh and I think if you would turn back to chapter 3 just for a moment in chapter 3 starting in verse 13 I just want you to see all these different body parts that are mentioned here and I think that this is the body of sin he says in verse 13 our throat was an open grave our tongue was deceiving our lips had the poison of ass our mouth was full of cursing and bitterness our feet were Swift to shed blood and verse 18 our eyes there was no fear of God before our eyes I mean that that's a graphic picture of total depravity that is a graphic picture of the Dominion that sin the pollution the corruption of sin that once ruled your life from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet your eyes your mouth your lips your feet your hands that's what we mean total depravity that the the total person corruption had gone to every square inch of your inner most being there there was no part of your life that was unwise 'end by sin I was a double negative meaning every part of you was poisoned by sin and so now in Romans 6 when he talks about in order to that our body of sin all of our sin was was being carried out through our through our body through our eyes through our hands through our feet that rule of sin it says has been done away with yeah that does not mean that it is totally absent it's a word that just means nullified in its power its ruling power in fact it's translated in first Corinthians 1:28 as nullified in the new American Standard and means to be deprived of its force now it still has power to raise its ugly head but not the power that it once had so we're gonna have to come up with another excuse then to say well that's just the old me again no the old you was nailed to the cross and is no longer alive in fact it's been buried and there's a new you that has been raised from the dead second Corinthians 5:17 therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation the old things passed away behold new things have come now there's one last thing that I want you to see and it's at the end of verse 6 and in verse 7 and this seventh reality that took place in our life when we were born again is we were freed from sin freed from sin and he's freed from the tyranny of sin freed from the overruling power of sin and so he says toward the end of verse 6 so that we and I just want to keep emphasizing we know we hear let me say it one more time refers to all believers it refers to only believers so that we would no longer be slaves to sin you know what that means you once were a slave of sin and now you're no longer a slave of sin you once did what sin told you to do and you were defenseless in your own ability to resist the the power of sin in your life it was it was overpowering you but now you're no longer slaves to sin you're a slave to someone else you're a slave to the Lord Jesus Christ and no one is not a slave you're either a slave to sin or you're a slave to the Lord Jesus Christ emphasis on Lord but no one is out there in no man's land no one is without a master and no one is not a slave so we are no longer slaves to sin we're no longer in bondage to sin or under the power of sin verse 7 for he who has died and that goes back to verse 2 and verse 4 and verse 5 and verse 6 we have all died with Christ and we have all died to the ruling power of sin so it says for he who has died in the he refers to every one of the we is freed from sin and literally it's translated has been justified from sin it's the same word that you use for justification and the idea is everyone who has been justified is sanctified their life is changing you you cannot be a believer in Christ and clothed in the righteousness of Christ and continue to live that same old stinking FAL wirless centered self righteous life that you once lived because when you were born again there you died that old life died and we need to know that and stop pretending like we're this sometimes the same old person in thinking of ourselves in that way no you died so dead that you've been buried with him and in that and that grave has had concrete poured over it supernatural concrete and that old life is not coming back and you have now been raised resurrected with Christ with a brand new life and it's the life of Christ now in you and it's Christ now living in you and so III think a person ought to know that they've been saved I mean I think a person would know that this has happened in their life and again if a person is without the assurance of their salvation and and that is possible I still contend it's basically because you've been sitting under such shallow Bible teaching that you don't even know this and have another paradigm for the Christian life that is not found in Scripture so how should we respond to this I'll just give you two things and we'll open it up for question number one is praise that there should be extraordinary praise in our heart for this dramatic change that has been brought about in our lives in fact I don't know that we can ever stop praising God that he stopped the the old life we once lived and we are dead that old man is dead and buried and we now have a brand new life so let us give praise to God for His grace the power of His grace second thing is prayer to God that this change would be more and more evident in my life the reality of it has happened we should pray that the evidence of this new life would be seen more and more with each passing day and we will be talking about what needs to happen for the greater evidence of this to be manifested in our lives but the beginning point is where Paul begins us here we're going to begin with some certain realities about our life so we did it we got through six verses so I love these verses and these verses I need to have in my mind in my paradigm of thought about my life and how I view the Christian life or building out from this point is going to be skewed so let me let me throw it open and I would love to know what do you think you got a question there Jonathan yeah great question first of all the actual new birth is subconscious we are not actually aware of the new birth itself but there are things that accompany the new birth that we are aware of there will be a sense of relief that the burden of sin has been rolled away there will be a sorrow over our sin there will be a joy that will flood our soul that we now have come through the narrow gate and my sins have been forgiven so these are things that accompany the new birth and just to give you this heads and tails of the same coin there is the new birth and there is conversion and we make a distinction between regeneration and conversion though they happen at exactly the same split second regeneration is what God does to our spiritually dead soul and it is a work of God and God alone we had nothing to do with regeneration just like we had nothing to do with our physical birth it's what happened to us at the same time there is conversion and conversion does consciously involve us and we're aware of our conversion and conversion is a turning like when I fly to another country I have to turn my American currency into a British pound or a European whatever that is currency and then when I come back what is it euro thank you I knew I would say it wrong a euro and then when I come back to the United States it has to be converted and it has to be turned back into something else the conversion part I am consciously aware of joy and and and and peace and even some sense of still grief over my sin I mean all of that takes place and the heavy burden of sin removed but in the regeneration part that is subconscious the conversion part is conscious yeah of course in this study it's so good he asks what is the best / most gracious way of bringing this to a person claiming Christ but no evidence of it in their life yeah well we certainly the most gracious loving way is that there is an appropriate time to talk to someone and that there could be an abrupt time that could be perceived as unloving to pray that God would provide just that right moment to have this discussion and then second a couple of things you you could walk through this passage now this passage is admittedly a little complicated and has taken me a couple days to kind of sort this all out in my own mind but there's like Matthew 7 not everyone who says to me Lord Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven but he who does the will of my father who is in heaven many will say to me in that day Lord Lord did we not prophesy in your name did we not perform many wondrous works and miracles and I will say I never knew you obedience from the heart is the leading indication there of the one who is truly saved and how easy it is to say Lord Lord but there and it's very possible the reality not be there so that's another possible text to go to there are many many passages to which one could go to to talk to that person I like I like to use first John and there are some 8 or 9 necessary evidences of the new birth if you have been born again all eight of these will be present in your life and first John 5:13 these things I've written unto you that you may know that you have eternal life and so you may know that you have eternal life as you see the fruit of the new birth in your life and if there's no fruit there's no root so it's just that simple so and I would bring that up but we have to speak the truth in love and it's not only what we say but it's how we say it and so there is a spirit of gentleness that we should have so maybe that answers the question thank you for watching from Ohio I see that it's 8 o'clock is there anything else Jonathan that's yeah well I don't know that we have time for lengthy oh that's a little fast ok it's on Steinbach time yes so we are saved but we still sin so he says porn addicts gambling addicts for the gay lifestyle will most likely struggle for tea time should death occur while one is sincerely working on freeing themselves from this addictive bondage with their heart in the right place will they see war well if there is an ongoing practice of those things no that will be evidence that they've never been born again will there be struggle will there be temptation yes of course there will and there's I can't give a simplistic you know answer to a very profound question that took in a lot of different patterns of sin but I think we can see from this passage that there has been a death to the old life and there has been a resurrection of a new life and so if there has not been life change then there has not been regeneration now the extent to which one can continue to struggle with sin is it's hard to you know to quantify the church at Corinth pushed the outer limits of just how carnal can you be and still be a Christian and so we see that here is a New Testament church that is in Christ Paul says at the beginning of chapter one these are true believers and they are caught up in some some pretty bad stuff but they repented and they turn from those things so much so that in 2nd Corinthians Paul has to tell them even for the brother that they discipline and put out of the church like okay after he's even back now he's repented I mean they they were so ready to make things right so the one who is struggling with those sins that they they would have to strongly desire to repent and and and confess that this is wrong and an evil against God and ask God for greater grace that they might live victoriously in Christ and as I said we're gonna be looking at chapter 7 I mean there's a lot there's a lot more to be said on this subject we but we've only put our foot into the shallow end of the pool I mean there's more to this matter of sanctification so but this is laying the foundation that everything else will be built up from or upon but I do want to be crystal clear if you've been born again there will be a dramatic change of your heart and your soul from the inside out does not mean there won't be still temptation or even a struggle there will be but having said that there will be a change and there will be a desire for greater change so we'll get into that alright men good study will be here next Thursday and at some point I'll you know be on the road more but it's interesting I'm literally leaving here and going to the airport and then I fly back in Wednesday night and we'll walk back in the room but I'll be ready I've xeroxed my Romans commentaries to read along the way so I'll be here I can't tell you how anxious I am to sort this all out in my mind I need to go through Romans 6 and Romans 7 and Romans 8 I need this to be clearer in my understanding a sanctification so we're all in this together asking God to instruct us and beyond that I need I need the reality to be seen in my life I need for you to see this in my life and I need to see this in your life well we need to encourage one another in this so we want it to do more than just be right we want to be righteous we want to live this out so may it be so in my life but in your life but we'll be in verse eight starting in verse eight next time and it will that there's some more bricks to put on the wall in the wall for our understanding on this well let me close and word of Prayer father thank you for this study I thank you for these men I pray that this has been helpful I know that it's been helpful because it's your word and your word is living and active and sharper than a two-edged sword so I'm just the sower of the seed I pray you would till up the soil in every man's heart here today so that it would bear much fruit I pray this in Christ's name Amen amen guys if some of you guys really want to have your questions answered you could actually sit at the table and text them to Jonathan okay and they could come in if you're kind of shy or bashful and don't want to speak you can actually text it yeah [Music] which is an indication to our sir and he weren't struggling like this so that's also why we have Romans 5:3 I was thinking about this before the less is contemplating and you know that you can't lose your salvation I was thinking about that sale okay so how do we have these fence if you know they're saying and you know don't have a fear of losing it what's this what's the purpose yeah so that you may know it's besties yeah when you have the one that was doubts to do paralyze you can check yourself yeah it's gonna drive themselves crazy who obsess over every little small detail and and their life and there aren't people like that and we need people like that to help us stay organized and things like that they obsess over a little small things yeah other personality types are just more big picture people yeah so there is an element of personality you know I don't know I've doubted at times am i doing the right thing am I in the right place you know I've doubted things like I just have never doubted like that I'm a Christian that I've been born again I mean it's just so real so decisive it's so bears witness in my spirit and in my heart that I'm not like sitting around thinking and well I guess maybe I'm not saved I mean because I know that I'm saved and I know sound doctrine you know my doubts are in other areas no sound Christians have some fun they think it's just it's a different way it's looking at things because we're all different the way we look at so I think it goes back to about teaching yeah I'm not really if they begin to start questioning yourself there's a people I've seen people question go if you've got it yeah there's got to be a change is there really a common the nfj I'm just saying I think I think it's also the other Christians you hang out with and their influence on your thinking and your life yeah I know okay great we're glad to hear this out of his office yet so we're still this is the meeting after the meeting this is the real big turn them the other was the warm-up back at the concert this is the real concert right now so no I think if you hang out with Christians who are just always doubting their salvation and they almost pull you into this vortex I almost put words in your mouth and don't you doubt your salvation - come on let's pray that they influence you into like it this is really yeah humble and spiritual for me - last week success going something and it applies to this prayer that the change would be more evident last week you pointed out something there's a searchlight on me there we grow at different pace oh yeah [Music] and then I woke up when you brought that out cuz I yeah that's a wonderful when you come on without my you know my relationship with the Lord I don't doubt that I'm saying but I know that Ryan Boyd you just thanked last week was power it was it's crazy to think about these okay so but before the Lord was resurrected and came back to you know what was going through his mind oh you have to think he Emmy he probably says yeah I know once my yeah I know I'm safe but what did I just do you know and the Lord had to give him that reassurance so the fact that the Lord gave him and coming around learner it to me to me means that it's a very real to have believers for the Satan is so doubts it cause confusion in in in I guess lack of joy right and that's not what that's not what there should be a good boy yeah I know what's that are you sitting on the bench well yeah now we have to disappoint her so in the spiritual life very core gem Gnostic comes from the gymnasium and actually it's very disciplined to work out and to get in shape and to push himself to get to the next level we have to do the same in our Christian lives discipline yourself therefore the per for the purpose of godliness and you're worried about things like that that's evidence that you are saying well my why because I did Lauren say don't care I really I'm on this pretty students diet and I I told my wife I had physically really just I mean present myself not going to work on the spiritual yeah work out your salvation and fear and trembling God has worked it in and you work it out well if anyone's still watching this is actually the elect that it stayed and our mission field has gone deep this is the separation of virgins from the wives we are awaiting our masters not get the don't work the shout of the bridegroom but thank you for joining us and being with us my lord minister to you right where you are reread Romans 6 and help get it into your life [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
