okay hi everyone anthony fantano here internet's busiest music nerd i hope you are doing well yes so the long-running influential and legendary music publication rolling stone put out a list of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time there has been a lot of discussion a lot of controversy over this list and uh yeah i'm just hoping to go over it myself i'm not really expecting in the grander scheme of things something that is too different in tone than like what we saw recently with rolling stones kind of like you know redoing their top songs list and stuff very kind of a agreeable uh list bland list outside of like a few weird kind of placements you've literally put mr tambourine man on the list twice you know in i think an over eagerness to kind of praise um some very modern and trendy stuff despite the fact that it's very apparently not going to have that much of a shelf life but with that being said starting at 200 we have travis scott astroworld okay i mean very popular psychedelic modern trap record all i'm going to say at this point is if this record is on this list at 200 rodeo better be on this list way [ __ ] higher tributing pop smoke here meet the woo it is a good project it is a good project i was late to adopting this because obviously a lot of his virality came after the release of this like by the time he put out meet the woo uh you know the sequel um but you know going back to this it is a very solid uh you know new york drill project and probably one of the tightest and to the point uh project in that genre that we're ever gonna get nice capone and noriega the war report this is a good record this is this this is this is a classic 90s banger if you have not uh treated yourself to this one i uh recommend that you do saba care for me um this is still a record that i don't really care for but i get the appeal i get the hype i do prefer his last album that he put out which i think had a lot of solid tracks on it but um but yeah you know uh keep on keeping on if you dig it you dig it nice sound bombing too i mean you know super influential project it's got just about everybody on there who you want to hear in terms of like just high performance in flow high performance and lyrical content uh without obviously like pushing things so far that it just feels like a an exercise in um you know technical ability so uh so yeah sound bombing too hell yeah nice little sims sometimes i might be introvert definitely a record i mean would i have placed it higher probably mac miller divine feminine is still not a a big fan of this project but you know listen macmillar's got to be on this list and if this if this record you know one one of his more tuneful and less rap oriented projects is landing this low on the list uh we've got to have faces or um you know a good am like ranking way higher here right flo milly oh why is you here no shade to flow millie i do like a lot of her verses i love her flow i love her delivery but i did not think this is this was like you know a great record like this this is not one of the better hip-hop records of 2020 in my opinion this is the first kind of placement on the list where uh again flo milli has a very distinct vocal flow delivery that has made her the viral success that she is but there are so many other things about what she does that i feel like are like lacking and don't put her on the level or past the level of a sound bombing too or a grave diggers because the internet for many people uh 166 this record has gone down as kind of a modern classic i i still don't see it there are some tracks that have aged very well on it but like so much of the record is still a slog for me especially in the second half hannibal ox the cold vein nice 2001 classic abstract hip-hop record super influential fantastic lp production on this thing uh cannot be beat as far as uh new york abstract hip-hop goes blank face schoolboy q another pick that i'm not super crazy about am i being called out here i don't feel like we're going over this list and my issues with it as much as we are reliving past traumas of opinions that i've had that uh everyone hates polo g dia legend i mean the good is better but then also like having this project placed above all again like grave diggers and sims and so on and so forth it's i i think this is a bit of a miss okay interesting pick i mean steinski what does it all mean uh i have the cd this is a really good cd it's like technically a hip-hop release it's also you know very much like a plunder phonics release as well getting a hold of this and like you know kind of reading into the liner notes and looking up steinski interviews if you can um we'll definitely like you know inform you quite a bit as to you know like what the state of sample-based music was uh back during that time when it was being put together and how it's kind of progressed into what it is today but a cool project and you know surprised to see it on here honestly how are you putting records on here that like we're we're literally hot for like 20 minutes at this point this just feels disrespectful to everything underneath on on the list honestly we'll rock marciano on here that's good that's fine i mean there is like you know a valid low-key minimal new york hip-hop wave that continued through the 2010s and i think very much kind of like laid the groundwork for a lot of the drumless stuff we're hearing right now and rock marciano is an important piece to that dna so having this record in the mix makes sense yes enter the stage man this thing is bangers on bangers on bangers this also makes me think of some of the other new york groups out there that like went hard as [ __ ] if onyx was going to be on here i would think that onyx would have like been on the list by now we're getting close to the top 100 and we're getting city girls over all of those [ __ ] classics when you know the the the best sounds that city girls bring to the table are like merely just uh a copy and paste job of i don't know stuff like miami base and [ __ ] like that where there are like tons of classic miami bass records that you should probably have here instead uh planet hurt the the most of this record is just dreamy r b fused with trap like dosia is barely even rapping on this record again we're nearing the top 100 here yes fish scale this record rules man [ __ ] love this record really versatile and movie-like record from ghost that um you know i imagine supreme clientele is going to be even higher here yeah and you guys thought that uh we're edgy now [ __ ] coloring book i mean it's i like it and and i prefer it in many ways to uh acid wrap but like ugh coloring coloring book at 105 no i expected clips on here got it in the top 100 though i would say the hell hath no fury is is more like a top 50 record in my opinion not a top 100 record it's a top 50 record broke with expensive taste not a great album mess of a record should not be here no name room 25 nice great record fantastic record now this is what i was hoping that they would do a little bit more with this list if they were gonna do modern [ __ ] pick the really quality underground stuff that has stayed relevant to people even if it didn't hit the charts but has still like stayed relevant to the fans for more than a [ __ ] summer please migos culture 2017. i mean this is the migos record if you were gonna pick one uh makes sense to me i think this record is one of the tightest most succinct and important trap records of this decade but with that being said uh where is flockavelli obviously there's a whole history of trap music prior to that lp but that album created such a splash and i think it's deserving of some space on this list especially if we're getting culture at 54. the carter 3 above the chronic i mean essential as far as bling era hip-hop of the 2000s but higher than the chronic acid rap no no no no no no no no no no chief key finally rich at 32 a lot of the tracks on there aren't even his best the drought 3 ds2 top 20 and we haven't even seen rodeo yet number 16 cardi b invasion of privacy why 2001 over th el chronic what [ __ ] metric miss education top ten true low end theory top ten true enter the wu tang top ten true it's great it's influential i don't think it's top 10. it's great it's influential most people think it's top ten i don't think it's top ten tpab it's top ten it's true it takes a nation of millions wow it is true it is a top ten record jay-z the blueprint okay top ten fair i'm happy it's here but obviously we're not going to see 444. okay stankonia top 10. it's true what's number one stankonia blueprint uh tpab all ranking lower what's number one it's it's got to be ready to die there you go it's ready to die knew it wow a lot of stuff that was kind of left out no death grips on the list as uh some of you guys are probably pointing out in the comments noah no death grips on the list sadly no pinata either because obviously they enjoyed bandana so much more than pinata and uh yeah we didn't see flower boy or igor but we got call me if you get lost no onyx no red man no organized confusion no blue and exile no dell the funky [ __ ] homo sapien and look this may be some like nerdy fantano core [ __ ] to some of these people but like there should be clipping on here there should be injury reserve on here just saying no aesop rock no billy woods if you're looking for modern talented mcs who like have lyrics have substance have personality have style and have good records like no denzel curry no denzel curry also shabazz palaces black up [ __ ] the lupe fiasco debut i'm sure there's more that you're going to add in the comments that i haven't added but either way i think this is a swing and a miss it's a swing and sort of a miss in so many ways those are my thoughts on this list let me know yours which i'm sure you're already doing you already have
