Rolling Stones Mono Boxset - Real or Fake?

hey there youtube it's michael gallagher here the media preacher back with another video and today i'm gonna do um another sort of unboxing music type video um because i've had something arrived this morning in the post very excitingly um i was expecting it to be a bit bigger than it is but it's it's a compact thing and hopefully you know great things come in small packages sometimes um but i've ordered something on the internet that um i was debating whether or not to get a lot of you enjoyed the video i did on the beatles mono box set and i've been looking at the rolling stones equivalent to that box set the rolling stones in mono which is basically the first part of the rolling stones career in a what looks to be a really really nice box set and the box i think came out in about 2016 originally and it was quite expensive when it was new but now it's harder to get hold of and it's a lot lot more expensive and you're talking you know well over 200 pounds um for a copy of the box set and there's a lot of rumors and web pages online that seem to suggest that even when spending that type of money you're likely to be getting a counterfeit um box set and of course you'll remember that the beatles monobox set that i had was counterfeit a lot of you were like thank you for posting the video thank you for warning us about this um but that box set was about i think it was about 35 pounds when i bought it so i sort of suspected that something might not be right with it and you know i've got the stereo box set which is the real deal i'm actually pretty happy with the box that i've got it's a nice display piece and i can listen to the recordings in mono when i want to so i was looking at the stones box sets and not being entirely convinced i could even get an original i went for one of the cheaper options on ebay um this guy sort of sends me a a mess i messaged this guy sorry jeff that was selling these things and i said to him you know is this a real box set because in his description he was selling it for about 70 pounds about 69 pounds i think so it wasn't wasn't cheap but it was certainly a lot cheaper than you would expect to pay for this thing and i messaged him asking is this a real box set he was based in england so i thought perhaps it's just a bargain but he'd sold lots of them before which was a bit of a i guess a flag that maybe he's not just selling his box at a cheap price he's maybe selling some counterfeit box sets but i asked him i said is it real he came back to me and he said well it's from asia it's the asian box set if you want to buy the american or the uk box set then you're going to be paying over 200 pounds which is right so he didn't say it's counterfeit as such but he he certainly suggested that it might be um i made him an offer a cheaper offer on it but he wasn't into that he said no it's 70 pounds that's what i'm charging for them they're a good price take it or leave it so i sort of thought about it for a few days and then ultimately i thought you know what jeff i'm going to go for it because i want to hear the image i'm not that familiar with the early rolling stones albums and i kind of like the look of the box set and if it's and if the set's done well and the beatles ones is ultimately the actual box itself is done pretty well it was the um inlay cards and the covers inside that really gave it away um i thought you know what it's a nice display piece and i don't want to spend 200 pounds on the rolling stones early catalog i'm going to take a punt and i'm going to spend 69 pounds with free delivery um on this box set just dropped it off hermes have just dropped it off at the door it's arrived so i'm gonna cut this bad boy open and see actually what we've got and i'm gonna invite you guys to share that with me hopefully i don't cut the actual set up by using my keys there we go right oh here we go it's well packaged well it says the rolling stones in mono inside of the package so that's a good sign it looks looks well printed from there on first i mean i don't know what the original one looks like because i haven't seen it but looking at this case i'm really happy with that that looks maybe this is original i don't know i'm looking at the case that looks really well printed i don't know why you can see that um everything's sort of square and it's sort of got a magnetic type strip it's got like a v there on the uh it looks pretty good everything looks symmetrical so that's a good start um it comes with this booklet to be honest with the printing on this booklet doesn't look as good as the printing on the box which is making me think that perhaps this isn't a genuine box set and at 70 quid it probably isn't you know what it hasn't this hasn't quite got the gloss and the finish that you that you'd expect perhaps from the real thing but it's it's actually not bad and the booklet's there talking about all the albums that's that's really nice actually i'm actually pretty happy with that yeah so you get this nice booklet with it bang let's have a look at the actual albums themselves so we've got the first rolling stones up i remember that we had a copy of this on vinyl and it's got loads of like blue standards and like chuck berry type songs sort of thing that keith richards goes absolutely mad about um my first impression of that is that you've got the picture of the rolling stones and there's a little mono catching up there if this was real i don't know if there'd be sort of a white border going all the way around and there isn't there's no white border on this side of the cd which makes me think that perhaps that's an indication this is not real but actually the the printing on the on the back of it that looks pretty square and that's all perfectly legible i can read everything so i'm really that's nice then we've got the rolling stones 12x5 in mono again i don't this is an original box set and the reason i say that is because the printing on this looks too dark it looks a bit like the sort of thing if you printed off your own photograph at home on your printer it looks a little bit like that it doesn't it's glossy it's a it's a glossy finish which is nice and again it's cut slightly strangely at the end there there's not i would expect to see more of a border perhaps on the real thing but you know what it's all legible it's on glossy paper it's nice and clear it's it's not falling apart let's have a quick look at one of the cds so they come in the old elephant condom cases uh and this cd has the london logo on it so presumably this must have been from the british album originally um but cd looks it's got a silver back to it which is nice and so it looks like an original cd certainly from that and yeah that looks really good actually that looks really good um so the cover's not quite right but it's not a million miles away it's certainly good enough for what i want and i can hear the albums which is ultimately what i want to do and i want to have a little display piece next to my beetles in mono and it's a bit of a talking point then you've got uh rolling stones number two um here which is on the decker label this let me show you the cd quickly so actually really nicely printed cds there and where you can see that they don't look bad at all and they're well protected in these little sleeves that they come with so that is the rolling stones number two rolling stones now this one looks really well printed my goodness i would struggle to tell you that that was counterfeit actually that is really nice that looks square everything looks nicely printed on it some glossy paper so shanks i don't have the original so it's difficult to sort of compare them out of our heads the rolling stones i'm sure my dad had this again on record um and everything in it is perfectly looking you see the the writing there on that it's all perfectly legible um it looks great it looks really really good i like that um and that one is on the london label and then we've got ah the american version of out of our heads um which presumably is on a decker yes that's on a decker label that's cool cover actually i think i probably prefer the american cover than the english cover december's children i don't know this album at all which is the same um photograph as the american version of out of our heads so i'm guessing that this was the english release of this album um but again that's printed and cut really really nicely looks great aftermath this is i just love the album cover of this aftermath albums i'm really looking forward to hearing this i don't think i've ever heard this album um although i would know under my thumb and mother's little helper obviously because they're on the stone's greatest hits albums that i've heard in the past i don't think i've ever heard aftermath properly so i'm looking forward to hearing that and then we've got i think this is the american version of aftermath which has a different track listing so it starts with paint it black so the americans had painted black on an album i don't think we did um but again that's really well printed it looks great um between the buttons rolling stones i've not heard this album but i've seen that album cover many many times at record fairs things i'm looking forward to hearing that we've got the album flowers that's got ruby tuesday on it let's spend the night together mother's little helper is on is on this album also looking forward to that again really nice that's really well printed it looks fantastic actually oh one of my absolute favorite albums of all time the rolling stones let it bleed it's got uh let it bleed in it love in vain give me shelter you can't always get what you want monkey man and country honk which is sort of like the country version of honky tonk woman really classic i've actually got this on vinyl um but that's a really nice addition getting a lot of albums here for 70 quid a hell of a lot of albums um the satanic majesties request i've heard lots about this album but i've never actually heard it properly all the way through you know what again that is printed really really well if this is a counterfeit i don't know for 100 that it is i think it probably is [Laughter] given the price oh my goodness wow that is got a stereo version of this album obviously um but it's going to be nice to have the mono version too i've got excuse me this is it's that sort of thing that gives it away perhaps as being a counterfeit and that there are two open sleeves there the cds in one but this this probably wouldn't be open if it was an original this would be cardboarded and shut down although i might put my stereo version of the album into that as well and the same thing maybe with let it bleed i might take a stereo version but i think i've got the deluxe edition of let it be so i probably won't do that actually but i certainly had a stereo version of it at one point that i might i might put into that i've got a spare copy of it and then we've got stray cats again the cardboard's nice and thick and it's nice and glossy but it's just slightly oversized which is causing um it's causing cause the cd to fall out and i don't think we would have that on an original set but you know what for 70 pounds i'm getting all these rolling stones albums beautifully presented in this lovely um box set that's really nicely printed and i'm getting the booklet and everything in it and on it is legible and well printed and so for a set that would cost if you wanted to buy it new in excess of 200 pounds an original set i actually don't think this is bad value for money at all and i'm gonna have this on my shelf next to my beatles in mono and if people ask me about it i can say oh well they think they're counterfeits but uh but they're nice to have um i don't like the stones as much as the beatles i'm in the beatles camp very firmly um so i probably wouldn't spend the type of money that this cost to get it a1 but i'm really really happy and i'm looking forward to listening to these albums and the sellers put this note in with me here he says hi michael positive feedback is always greatly appreciated best wishes jeff and jeff is based in swansea so i don't know it's it's he didn't say it was counterfeit he certainly didn't say it was original he sort of reading between the lines told me that it was probably going to be counterfeit but for 70 pounds all my doors just opened i'm actually really really happy with this so um yeah that's my rolling stones in mono box set unboxed can't wait to dive into it and start listening to all the uh and the albums i've heard that the sound quality on these is really good and the online forums all say that actually the counterfeits of these are very good and the sound quality on the cds themselves the counterfeits is also very very high and apparently you know these albums were all mixed originally in mono they were recorded really for a mono format certainly the very early albums and apparently the mixes have a lot more punch than the stereo counterparts that are available so i'm i'm really looking forward to hearing um these cds as they were originally intended to be heard it's kind of like getting an old widescreen vhs as the movie was originally intended to be seen so look forward to it i hope you
