welcome to a new video let's take a look at some new malicious compliance stories the first story is called stubborn boss this happened one evening at the bus depot my brother and I used to work at quite a long time ago my brother started out as a general labourer cleaning the buses moving them to correct locations and other miscellaneous tasks throughout the night the supervisor was a jerk who thought he knows everything this supervisor was telling my brother to perform a task that was a little risky everyone in the area could hear the conversation pretty well because we worked closely together one night the supervisor said to move a certain bus in between two other buses that were parked a little too close together I don't feel comfortable backing a bus in there that's pretty close I thought you were good at parking these I am but those are just a little too close it won't fit then make it fit I'm sure you can see where the malicious compliance is about to come into play the supervisor told him to stop making excuses for not wanting to work he assumed all the workers were lazy because they were part of a union ok I will do that boss as he backed in everyone in the shop started staring because they knew it would be bad the whole shop was taken over by the loud scraping noises the supervisor ran over yelling what are you doing I am making it fit by this time the supervisor was mad and said now you have to ride an accident report well my brother was compliant on that end as well as he wrote the accident report he reads it out loud the supervisor told me to park the bus in Lot C I explained I didn't feel comfortable and it wouldn't fit he told me to make it fit before he could finish the supervisor cut him off and said what are you doing I am writing the incident report don't worry about it I'll take care of this that's fine everyone watched as this happen and it was the talk around the shop for quite a long time the management never brought this incident back up the supervisor must have brushed this under the rug as to not get himself in trouble about a year after that my brother was actually promoted to the supervisor and then eventually to the manager of the shop the next story is called the first day of vacation as I was finishing up high school I got my first job working at a shop down the street from my house I still lived with my dad and I had a pretty sweet deal because he was a consultant thus his big house with a pool in a nice neighborhood was all mine about three weeks out of the month sometimes as long as six weeks my dad told me I had to start paying for my own insurance for my car and there'd be no allowance anymore so I needed some sort of job but I didn't need anything major so I took the job under the premise that they just needed someone part-time immediately I was thrust into over forty hours a week at this place as the manager had some weird inability to hire people I honestly think he just lied about not being able to get people so he could run a skeleton crew to make his profit margins look better I can't count how many times they had one person working a shift that needed at least two and could have used three they place was always a bit of a mess because as mentioned we were chronically understaffed he was always asking us to do a ridiculous amount of work and at one point he even managed to make the beverage distributor angry so they'd no longer help stop the coolers when our drink supplies came in this meant sometimes you'd be in charge of stocking all the coolers a huge order while having to keep an eye on the register and all of the other things we had to do like facing all the shelves rotating the hot foods at center a long story short what should have been a brainless ship that did have bad pay minimum wage ended up taking up a huge portion of my time but life could have been worse I had a lot of extra money in a really nice house all to myself so there was some social perks indeed at a certain point I requested some time off to go on a road trip with some friends and it was granted the day that was supposed to be heading out on the road I get a call from my boss begging me to cover he acknowledges that it's supposed to be the beginning of my vacation but he couldn't get anyone to cover we probably didn't actually have anyone that could that day as we were so understaffed luckily for him the driver on our road trip had let us know that we were going to be leaving later than originally thought pretty much exactly when I'd normally be getting off shift so I agreed thinking that the boss would owe me one so I go in and is there gratitude is there some beer with a bow on it waiting for me as a post shift thank you know the dude gives me this ridiculous list of things to do there was always a lot of work to do there but this was actually the most ridiculous amount he'd ever dumped on me the icing on the cake was that he ended his whole spiel with and I need all this done tonight or don't bother showing back the would actually had the nerve to threaten me after I came in on a day that was supposed to be the beginning of a vacation so I waited for him to leave enjoyed some hot dogs while reading a magazine sold myself a ton of beer and then closed the place up about two hours early I didn't want to leave right away because then someone might notify him but this particular branch was empty after a certain time and so no one would notice then I went on vacation and seeing as I hadn't done anything let alone his laundry list of things I never went back despite the fact that I didn't do what he asked he still expected me back so I had the pleasure of listening to his five or six irate messages before he finally realized that it wasn't a misunderstanding about when I was supposed to return to work I was just following his instructions the third story is called floored grading system this happened back when I was in college this was a few years ago during a class that I needed for my major the professor wanted to use this online platform for two of our online assignments and decided to grade it through the rating system available on the platform this online platform allowed students to create questions and their peers can answer them and comment on them basically the assignment was that we had to think of multiple-choice questions related to the class and other students would rate the question and leave a comment and if the comment is good people could start the comment the higher the rating your question has and the more stars you have on your comments the higher overall rating you have which is what the grading is based on now obviously this assignment can be a competition of how many friends you have rather than how good your question and comments are and my friends went to talk to the professor after the lecture to tell her that this assignment can be gamed she agreed with us and said she changed the grading system to be based on participation she announced this change in the next lecture however in the lecture after that she announced that she changed greying back to the overall rating as some students have emailed her saying that they have put a lot of hours into researching the perfect question that would get him a high rating and if it were to be changed to participation all their efforts would be wasted not wanting to waste their efforts she decided to change the grading back to the rating system this is when our group decided that we will game the system we were also triggered by how the professor kept bringing up topics in other classes which we did not take so we were already losing to them in terms of prior knowledge since we were a small group it was easier to call and collaboration we started a Google Doc and shared it with everyone in our group who was taking this class we then shared the link to our questions and pasted our comments for easy identification we rated every question on the Google Doc with the top score and left a comment and starred comments that were written in the Google Doc as comments were set to be anonymous as a result my major topped the rating charts and we aced the assignment the professor was horrified at some of the comments which was simply good question but received a ton of stars the professor then changed the second assignment to be participation with extra credit awarded for quality submissions vetted by her she should have just done that from the start the next story is called send you everything a few years back I was working recruitment in a relatively large engineering company it was my very first job so naturally I was doing the grunt work which mainly revolved around two things interviews and initial short listing of applicants the company's job openings were all posted on a centralized website where people could submit their applications and resumes this short listing involved me going through every single application that we received for the job openings we had and doing a basic screening so that only suitable applications would be forwarded to departments considering the number of job openings and the reputation of the company we easily had over a hundred applications coming in daily therefore necessitating a basic round of shortlisting to save the department time filtering through irrelevant applicants simple but very time-consuming work fast forward to about a year after I joined a new manager comes in it quickly becomes obvious that she is one of those managers who new picks everything their subordinates start and assumes that everyone around them isn't doing their job properly less than a week after she joins the company she calls me into a small meeting room to discuss our work scopes so I sit down with her and give a brief rundown of what my work entails and already I can see the gears in her head turning through the whole conversation she keeps making snide remarks and hinting that I'm not doing enough work she clearly is of the opinion that my work is such a chicken feed that it would take a half-wit five minutes to get it done finally she stops beating about the bush and tells me I noticed that some of the job openings have been advertised for very long I knew where this was going she continues I want to close as many positions as quickly as possible so from now on send me all the applications that we get and I'll do the filtering myself and send them to the bosses at this point I know that she has absolutely no idea just how many applications we receive each day but when I try to explain this to her she simply brushes off the idea that it will be too much for her to manage find then starting that afternoon I begin downloading every single new application that comes in and emailing them all to her bear in mind the sheer volume of applications exceeded the email size limit many times over so I was forced to send her multiple emails pack with documents every day as expected they pile up quickly she simply doesn't have time to go through a hundred applications a day within two days I've received a good five emails asking for more applications which are helpfully forward to her swamp she starts to simply email out the unfiltered applications to the departments by the second week her email inbox is bursting and she's fielding angry calls from multiple department heads wanting to know either where the new applications are or asking why they aren't being properly filtered beforehand meanwhile with all the shortlisting taken off my hands I've got loads of free time to sit at my desk and watch her flounder before the third week rolls around she meekly approaches my desk and tells me that I've been doing a great job and that there's no need to send the applications directly to her anymore I never heard the slightest insinuation that I wasn't pulling my weight from her after that the last story is called I gave you enough information so we have a database that is very difficult to maintain it's not one I made it's one we are forced to use it is easy to delete the wrong thing and then we are charged two hundred and fifty dollars to recover it because of that only I can delete something the database has customer numbers dates and other items that are indexed the only one item that is unique to each document is the document ID number so for that reason I ask that people requesting the document be deleted to provide the document ID number I received a request to delete a document and it had everything on the document except the ID number I send an email back saying that I need the document ID number the response I got was not what I was expecting why do you need the document ID number I gave you enough information to find it I know but sometimes the documents share a lot of those attributes in the document ID is the only one it can't I don't have time to do your job for you just find the document and delete it so out of curiosity I looked it up using what she provided and just as expected there are two matching ones usually they want one deleted because they duplicated it some way now the nice thing to do would be to call her and tell her there are two and that I don't want to delete the wrong one but she was very clear that I shouldn't bother her with this so I deleted both the duplicate and the one she probably wanted to keep which led to the following message I'm missing a document it was there but now it's gone which one she gives me the information not the document ID and I tell her that is one she wanted to be deleted no I wanted the duplicate deleted how are you this stupid I did exactly what you said you've got to get it back this is going to cost two hundred and fifty dollars what for your mistake I'm talking to your boss about this in the end my boss backed me up 100% she ended up paying from her budget and she uses document IDs now nothing was said about her calling me stupid but whatever thanks for watching the video I hope you enjoyed it if you did please consider subscribing to the channel for more content let me know
