welcome to a new video let's take a look at some new malicious compliance stories the first story is called won't release my car this happened a few years back though I'm still driving my 2005 Santa Fe that's involved with this I had just gotten a new job in a different state and because it was somewhat of a promotion the company paid entirely for the move after seeing all of my stuff packed away safely the movers started heading to the new state but as they were driving a different route to avoid icy roads through the Rockies they were going to take a little longer so we drove through the night and ended up staying at a hotel on the way over I noticed my brakes starting to vibrate just a bit on the descent into the new state and they were squeaking tad new brake pads maybe new rotors if they can't be machined no big deal right so after we got our stuff unloaded and into the new place I take the car to a mechanic shop that had good ratings and was even recommended to me by a co-worker but I swear they took a look at my out-of-state license plates and saw dollar signs when I dropped off the car I signed the work order for a tire rotation and a free inspection just wanting him to confirm my suspicions on the brakes I specifically told him to not do any work unless I specifically authorized him over the phone and in writing you can probably guess what happened next I called after about an hour to see what they'd found and sure enough the boss of the shop said that unfortunately are not only needed new pads and rotors but new calipers as well totaling $1,200 but not to worry as they'd already started working on it and would have it done in just under a couple hours needless to say I was mad as all hell and told him that I had not authorized that nor did I agree that those repairs were likely necessary I told him I would be over in a minute to cease all work on the car and that I would talk to him in person on the way over I called a different shop one that had better ratings and the one I eventually used for every car related need after this for the rest of the time I lived in that state and explained the situation she said that it was highly suspect that they wanted to replace the calipers but that they'd be happy to give me a second opinion of course and that they usually ran around $300 for new pads and rotors I always get second and sometimes third opinions on non-emergency repairs like this just because of the skewed incentives on the dodgy repair places to trump up what's needed like the original place was doing anyway I get to the repair shop and proceeded to tell the manager that I was taking my car elsewhere for a second opinion and that if he was right and the calipers needed to be replaced along with the rest of the brake assembly I would be happy to have him bid on the work he responded that he'd be happy to have my car towed to a different shop for one hundred and fifty dollars but that he was legally obligated to hold my car as it was an unsafe vehicle and he would be liable for any damages that ensued if my brakes were to fail should I leave I knew this was made up we yelled about it for ten minutes with him every time refusing to budge saying that he'd have it towed for 150 or do the repairs nothing else I told him he was committing grand theft auto and that I would call the cops if he didn't put my car back together and let me drive away he told me to do it that they would back him 100% and they might find me for driving with completely destroyed brakes so I did I called the non-emergency police line and was eventually transferred to a very nice female police officer and I currently explained to her my situation she was super helpful and confirmed of course that the mechanic had no legal basis to hold my car against my will and although she did warn me that I was of course liable for any and all problems that might arise if I was indeed driving with bad brakes it wasn't his problem she actually laughed at him saying he was liable if I got into a wreck after I left and that he was in violation of the law so I took my cell phone in and had him talk to her and he proceeded to be a massive jerk to her on the phone at first not believing that she was in fact a real police officer and then insisting that she didn't know what she was talking about he'd done this before and knew the law he still didn't believe she was a real actual police officer so she promised that he'd find out soon enough she told me she said that after he handed the phone back to me fifteen minutes later after I waited outside because I was really close to just losing it talking to this jerk a squad car rolls up and asks me where the manager is they were informed already of the situation walked up to the guy and handed him something I assume was either a ticket or a summons or something they wouldn't tell me what afterward but they did look satisfied as all hell and were super nice to me and told him to put my car back together immediately and let me go this had all been over four hours from the time I dropped my car off to the time they drove it out of the bay ready for me to drive away and after all that he hands me the bill $50 for a tire rotation and $100 for the inspection I had a copy of the original of course and told him to go screw himself on the inspection fee and looking at my car outside I told him to see for himself that the tires weren't actually rotated the cops were still there too so there wasn't much he could do but let me sign a zero dollars work order for nothing and walk away it was glorious and of course the other repair shop said it was just the pads that needed to be replaced and they were able to machine the rotors so that there wasn't a hint of vibration all told two hundred dollars and a great new mechanic I could trust in a new area to boot the next story is called be careful what you ask for you might get it I used to work customer service at a massive credit and charge card call center we'll call them United States PD all right job well paid but with a lot of annoying customers of the wealthy variety had a lady call up and say immediately after passing security that she'd been hit with another charge from us on her account that she was sick of these and so would like to close her accounts she had three of these in she'd been with the company for about fifteen years had a quick look and could see that she'd had about three over-limit fees in the last couple of months all refunded immediately and recognized that she was just angling for another refund on her latest one having figured out that that old I'm closing my account line was a good way of getting us to bend over backward now the kick is that I'd have absolutely just refunded the fee if she'd just asked for it it wasn't much and I had the authority to do it but she did it she didn't even say she'd closed her account if we didn't refund the fee she just immediately asked me to close her accounts expecting me to plead with her to stay and that got on me so of course I just did as I was asked said brightly sure let me do that for you straight away immediately started the account closure process gave her all the required scripts said she'd receive her final statements at various points she had to give bits of info like confirming her address and you could hear the struggle in her voice as she mentally debated whether to back out of the corner she'd put herself in and admit she just wanted a free refund finally at the end of it she obviously realized that she was being an idiot and really wanted to keep the accounts open and said quietly you know I'd have kept my account open if you just offered to refund a fee to which I responded in my best customer voice tones really madam well why didn't you say that you're a long-standing customer and if you just wanted the fee refunded I'd have been very happy to do that immediately if you'd ask we don't have any extra authority to do things because you threatened to close your account if we can refund the fee will happily do that and if we can't we can our policies don't change just because you say you want to close your account but you said you were sick of us and wanted to close your account and seemed so adamant about your dissatisfaction that I thought it best not to argue the point as I thought it would just make things worse so she a little happier now said okay great so you can refund the fee and I'll keep my account open sorry madam I'm afraid the accounts are closed now and I can't reactive them I can't even refund the fee if you'd like to reapply then you'll have to do so through our website I'm afraid that the accounts I've just closed a legacy accounts though so you'll have to choose from the ones that are available to new customers and that don't have quite the same benefits I'm afraid and by the way don't forget to let your husband and kids know that their cards won't work anymore also it looks like you have 15 or so standing orders going through the card every month you will need to contact these companies individually and give them alternate payment details else the payments will be declined is there anything else I can help you with the perfect way to deal with such a jerk of a customer what do you think the last story is called Bruner Department I helped create this goes back decades I'm almost over I joined a company that was set up as a consultancy to a large corporation to repair their relationship amongst the local community that they were part of I was in the IT division I was part of a team of five people who installed computers in local businesses and it ran a billing package for these businesses we trained the staff and supported everything this was all done as a low-cost outreach and was very successful this went fine for about eight years until the top guy in the company left to join the corporation and a new guy took his place as director the new guy who wasn't really a problem was more of a paper manager a genius at it really but he left all personal issues to the department managers however he didn't go along well with the IT manager and she finally resigned after months of tense standoffs over various policy issues now I was the most experienced staff member and I might have had a chance to get her job but the office grapevine said the director had already secretly selected someone himself this was surprising as we'd merged with the corporation and all hiring was required to go through human resources but he wanted to be able to replace our manager instantly so he'd been grooming the replacement so the moment she resigned in a fit of anger during a meeting he had her replaced right away remember how I said the director wasn't good at personnel he wasn't good at hiring and interviewing either the new IT manager was horrific ly unqualified her resume was invented from top to bottom she had no management experience and as we discovered she knew nothing about IT how much nothing she didn't understand the difference between Macs and PCs she made a major purchase of new office software for the entire office Mac office software we ran das on PCs at the time although Windows 95 had come out a few years earlier we were locked into IBM pcs with DOS based applications on a contract with IBM her resume boasted a deep programming background but she didn't know what subroutine was it simply got worse and worse over the next few years she deliberately drove out all experienced staff she would require highly granular timekeeping for all of IT tracking who called in for support when we spend support at a business or the corporation even though there was zero use for this as there wasn't even internal tracking for who used what when we complied including tracking the time to track the time and her increasingly complex needs for details started to take up to an hour each day the director ended it she also routinely took personal credit for projects done by her department with no acknowledgment of the actual individual who performed the work one by one my co-workers left two other jobs and in one case she framed one guy for a failure she caused and got permission to fire him she replaced everyone with people she had known at previous jobs regardless of their backgrounds and job skills a COBOL programmer replaced one of our training and support people he was a great guy and miserable in the role she put him in she hired another woman to replace another staff member but all this woman had done before was author training manuals our training materials were all provided under our contract I never figured out what she did aside from acting occasionally as a personal secretary which made no sense since we had a secretarial pool and she got paid three times what they got paid as for me my wife and I had had our first child around this and I simply didn't care about issues of pride anymore I was careful to not get fired myself because all I wanted to do was bring home a paycheck for my family the IT manager took credit for everything I did I was careful to document my work and in many cases her taking credit failed because it was too obvious she wasn't involved she moved on to trying to get me fired anyone who has done customer and computer support knows that you will get customers who just cannot make happy usually just a personality conflict in the past we simply traded the call off to another member of IT staff and that would often do the trick my manager tried to inflate all of these to fireable offenses to my face she would promise to have my back as the original IT manager always did she loved her staff and would take a bullet for us behind the scenes she tried to build a case against me the first time I realized this was a meeting between the director one of our business consultants my manager and myself I've been given a heads up by the business consultant and when I walked into the meeting I had all my notes on my supposed failures she made her pitch to the director but the business consultant and I destroyed her and demonstrated to the director she was inventing things she was humiliated and I remained unscathed the second time an assistant manager of one of the businesses I'd recently installed a computer system it raised a huge stink he'd been following me around during the install and questioned me turns out he was trying to set up a system at home to call in to his office to get onto the network which back then was a bigger deal than it is today however I'd actually done this for another business but not this one he'd made some random guesses as to what he needed and wasted $5,000 because it was all IBM hardware and software he blamed me again the IT manager told me she'd reviewed my notes and knew I was blameless I wasn't stupid enough to believe her again I got the business consultant to go to the head manager at this business and ask about this it turned out the assistant manager there had never requested remote access internally and the entire staff there supported my version of events of course my manager once again had tried to escalate this to a major failure remember those detailed notes she had wanted well even though the ridiculous depth of them was gone I still kept them she called another meeting this time inviting senior man from the corporation as well it was another embarrassing moment for her i refuted all the claims made by her and the assistant manager of the business and with documentation my good friend our business consultant backed it all up in the cherry on the top the head manager of the business called the senior management at our corporation to apologize for his assistant manager and to praise my work my manager looked like the idiot she was all because I continued to comply with the task she originally instituted to drive the old staff out now she kept her job mainly because our director would have to explain why he hired someone so clearly unqualified and he couldn't because he violated human resource policy to do so but I know you readers out there want to hear some juicy revenge as well that weekend following that meeting a major businesses entire computer network I'd installed went down after a lightning strike I remotely diagnosed it and knew it needed a simple harddrive replacement and a restore from a tape backup I came in on Monday before I could leave to fix the client she called me into her office she offered me a three-month severance package full pay benefits etc they only offered these two management types normally she hated me and wanted me gone I told her I would gladly accept it but didn't she want this client fixed it was kind of a big deal she said no while I signed the legal paperwork she rambled idiotically about my job performance etc but I just finished signing took my copy of the papers and told her that she didn't know anything about what she was talking about and this severance proved that I packed up my office said goodbye to my friends many of whom were shocked and crying over this and I can't deny I was a little wet around the eyes too I told him it wasn't a problem and you know what it wasn't a problem I'd been building my own software company on the nights and weekends for years with full permission of my original manager I walked out there with three months of free salary into my own company which was now paying me more than my old salary now that I could go full-time with my partners and my friend who got fired I used my contacts and found him a job a better job too as for my manager they took over two months to figure out how to replace and restore that hard drive to the business that had the lightning strike I wasn't kidding about her hiring the wrong people for our jobs that business likely badmouth them because they barely retained 30 percent of the businesses as they lost them one by one over the next few years my friends kept me up to date until they left thanks for watching the video I hope you enjoyed it if you did please consider subscribing
