welcome to a new video let's take a look at some new malicious compliance stories the first story is called enjoy your weekend many years ago I worked at a gas station on a college campus mainly the evening shifts Thursday through Sunday nights the manager I'll call her Wanda was a total horror she was constantly failing at her responsibilities then blaming the employees when the owner would mention something I had been working there for about four years when one morning I wasn't feeling well I called around to see if anyone could come in for my shift but no one was available I called wanted to let her know I was sick and unable to come in since part of her job was to cover shifts when others cannot she told me to be at work in on time or else I would be fired so I got up and went to work and within an hour I was throwing up I even threw up behind the counter when I couldn't make it to the bathroom in time I called Wanda and told her I had to leave as I was throwing up constantly she got an attitude but said she would come in anyway and how her later she showed up complaining that I ruined her day because she and her boyfriend were planning to leave to go on a vacation that evening I started to gather my things and she asked me what I was doing I said I'm sick and throwing up I'm going home she replied I'm just here to watch the store while you get yourself together if you leave don't bother coming back so I left around 8:00 won a call to ask me where I was I told her I was at home in bed still throwing up she told me I needed to come back to work so she could leave for her vacation I reminded her of what she said before she left and said I was more than happy to comply I hung up the phone and unplugged it I plugged the phone back in at 11:45 and called the store Wanda answered after a minute of ringing so the store had to be busy I said something like Wanda its Christine I just wanted to let you know that I'll be coming by Monday to get my last check and also I agreed to work doubles tomorrow and Sunday so employee X could go home for the weekend good night after that I unplugged the phone again I had a cell phone at this point but Wanda didn't have the number so I didn't plug my phone back in until Monday I went up to the office around 3:00 to get my last check and Wanda was furious she had worked an entire extra week's worth of hours in one weekend and she was salary so no extra pay she also got in a lot of trouble when the owner found out what she did and I was rehired immediately she was fired within a year of that incident the next story is called blade fee I have three roommates that each give me their portion of the rent and I pay it in full our apartment complex has an option to pay rent online we have a grace period of three days before we're considered late at which point we can't pay online any more the account gets locked out we have to go into the office and pay via cashier's check and then they allow you to log back in two months ago are logged into the website and went through the motions of paying even getting me thank you for your payment screen like usual I thought rent for that month had been taken care of come the fourth day of the month we get a slip of paper that says late payment naturally I went to look online to find information but found my account locked and a short message that said something along the lines of talked with the leasing office I walked in and spoke with the property manager who had a pompous attitude the entire time I'm also going to cut out the part where she asked me for my apartment number but I'm going to say it because some of you might ask so I got this late notice and I'm confused as to why because I paid rent she checks something on her computer and then looks at me according to this you didn't there were no attempts to pay rent on your apartments behalf I know that the payment went through on the website it showed me the thank you screen I pull out my phone and show her the screenshot I took of it along with the bank withdrawal there is no date on this screenshot so I can't take this as proof maybe store your proof with date via email for your records since you're a day late here's the amount you owe now I wanted to argue more but I had just gone back from school and really wasn't in the mood I go to the bank and get a cashier's check and then go back to the office she takes the cheque from me and I take a moment to stop at the little corner with all of their business cards and get one for each member of staff they all had their emails on it now she didn't tell me that I should send it to myself all she said was via email so that's exactly what I did this is where the malicious compliance comes in last month I wrote an email to the entire office staff that said I'm paying rent today after I was done I took a screenshot of the thank you screen and the calendar next to each other I then sent another email to the entire office staff the screenshot attached if there wasn't enough I send another email after the bank withdrew the money and another saying that I was done paying rent for this month but to expect the same thing next month for my records of course this month I did the exact same thing the property manager called me and told me that sending him an email for everything wasn't necessary but I insisted that I needed witnesses for my records that way I couldn't get accused of falsifying again I thanked her for her willingness to cooperate and for the wonderful idea of sending things via email I also told her that I would be doing this until I decide to move out but would gladly send him emails on behalf of the rest of my roommates for as long as they decide to stay there just as the icing on the cake we just signed a new 14 month lease so that means at least 14 months of emails from me I also talked to corporate who refunded me the second time I paid because the money had gone through the first time the third story is called sure I'll call my supervisor when my brother and I were in our early 20s we worked at the same small theatre in a rather posh area of West London it was a lovely little place with small productions and was visited by some pretty cool people but occasionally you'd get someone visit who thought a little more highly of themselves than others you know the type who treats service people is lowly and it's okay because they're so important it wasn't often but we'd have a few people visit once in a while now I and my brother are not from this plush part of London actually we're born and raised in the east side but speaking to us you'd never really guess that because we are pretty good at adjusting our accents for our workplace also no one knew we were related unless they work with us most of our co-workers were from more affluent areas and sounded so and were all awesome we had great banter anyway I was a barista at the time and one of the rules as if it was cutting close to the start of a show you weren't allowed to put certain food orders through because it just wouldn't be ready in time and if the customer wasn't seated by the time the show started they'd have to wait until the interval for entry most people understood some people just thought we were lying and didn't want to take their order I don't know what possible reason they thought I would want to lie about that so one day this lady comes up in demands one of said food orders and I politely explained the above scenario point her to the foods that are able to be ordered and asked if I could interest her in one of those I guess somewhere along the line my accent slipped up in her face just turned it was a pure twist of disgust and her voice changed I could almost feel the disdain pouring out of her mouth of course you're incompetent you're not from here I want to speak to your supervisor I want to make a complaint about your service skills I was pretty taken aback but not surprised we've both had this a lot I asked her if she was sure she wanted to speak to my supervisor she assured me she absolutely was I was happy to comply so I called my supervisor over my supervisor was my brother at that time because he is awesome he asked the lady what the problem was and she proceeded to insult me personally about my poor service skills being a result of my social background and how I didn't belong there having come from that place putting on his best accent he replied asking her if she wanted to continue personally insulting me his sister and co-worker or if she would like to pipe down and continue taking her order with him who reiterated the same menu rules I've never seen someone gasp in such a dramatic way it was wonderful she did shut up and place her order the next story is called you got it long ago while in grad school I worked at a big-box electronics store doing a commission sales job the job wasn't all that bad but as with all big-box retailers they really wanted you to push their lame personal service contracts which was their fancy word for an extended store warranty where the real money is made as they say this place was a way for me to make money on the site while finishing the last leg of school so I didn't bother with the warranties all that much I'd mention them they were good money but I wasn't pushy with customers then a perfect storm hit that allowed me to not only make some money but a huge amount of money all while having some fun at the store's expense perfect storm ingredient one management started heavily hinting that they were going to start writing up salespeople if they didn't start selling X amount of warranties per week and getting X amount of people to sign up for their useless store credit card perfect storm ingredient to this store had a generic low price store brand of networking hardware well it turns out the company's buyer and some other management people had taken massive kickbacks from this low price brand to keep them in the store the buyer and anyone else in on the scandal was fired in addition prices were down in commissions were raised to get this brand out of the store as fast as possible thinking about my new weekly goal and wanting to be a good seller I started selling warranties more aggressively with the following speech to customers so I know you haven't heard of this brand compared to your other brand but think of it like this you can buy this router that does the same job for $20 get a $10 warranty save $40 because they're having a fire sale and if it breaks then you come back and they have to replace it the real beauty is they're getting rid of this line so they have to replace it with the next best competitor which means you get a full price brand-name item for the $10 it cost you for the warranty surprisingly a lot of people saw the logic of this and bought their fire sale tech along with a warranty that often cost as much as the item being sold eventually my boss who was a pretty cool guy called me over to ask why my warranty numbers were suddenly so high I liked the guy so I explained exactly what I was doing he stared for a moment then said you shouldn't be selling a $10 warranty on a $10 item we're discontinuing I explained I was just following upper management's orders everyone hated upper management so he just smiled and shook his head I kept right on selling warranties until the fire sale was over and had some of the best weekly Commission numbers I ever got at that store thanks to the fire sale commission prices and the added warranties the real kicker the store manager who'd threatened writing people up if they didn't give warranty targets came over a couple of times to congratulate me on all the great work I was doing she could see the numbers but apparently my boss forgot to mention to her why that number suddenly spiked the last story is called enforce the rules selectively I used to work for a manufacturing company who makes waste containers dumpsters and such and at first it was a good job with a good manager and no problems I enjoyed the work it was a dirty physically demanding job but kept me in good shape I could just put in my earbuds and cruise through the day without any issues my initial job was to prepare the units for painting by polishing imperfections with a sander and grinding down the areas that were too rough as well as cleaning them up after the welders were done with them but after a while they kept laying off so many people and dumping their jobs on me that eventually towards the end of my time there I was quality control help the painter was a warehouseman finisher grinder and also janitor for no additional pay beyond the small cost of living raises we got once in a while after about a year of working for this company prior to having all these jobs dumped on me without any issues new management showed up and as they like to do they started making all kinds of changes just for the sake of making changes things that made jobs harder with no benefit cutting corners that should not be cut and generally hurting productivity and workplace safety the change in management was bad but it was not the end of the world it made things harder for no real reason but all in all things were still manageable until I ended up off work for about a month with a collapsed lung that I still to this day believe was caused by working conditions therein lack of ventilation when I came back to work I was on light duty for quite some time since I had a surgery to repair the lung and prevent it from collapsing again I went from the golden boy who they called on when things had to get done to the redheaded stepchild of the company and management was doing everything they could to get me to quit they would throw my tools away hide my stools so I couldn't use them while I was working hassle me over things like my earbuds citing safety as while I couldn't use them the production manager would lie about things and write me up for non-existent violations refused to fix my bay doors that had been crashed into by forklifts numerous times that had to be closed and opened with a crowbar by two people since the track was mangled other things include the company giving everybody in the plant raises except for me catching me five minutes before leaving work to go on my weekend and informing me that we had to work the next day and selectively enforcing safety rules and even making rules up on the fly after about six months I had enough and decided that if they want to constantly cite policy and safety rules to screw me then I could play the game too I would make this manufacturing plant the safest company on the planet and ensure policy was followed to the exact letter this was now my mission I began to slow my work way down and only do the jobs I was hired and paid to do instead of doing the work load of ten employees with nothing in return they now got exactly one person's worth of labour out of me customers orders began stacking up deliveries were late bad welds and welds that got missed during production were overlooked causing the units to have to be repainted when they had to go back to the welding lines to be fixed the warehouse became a wreck with containers backed up to the point that people did not even have room to work I went from completing a large unit in 30 minutes to a taking me two and a half hours on the same one not to mention all the repairs that needed done that were missed during production when before I would have caught him before the units even left the production line other petty things I did included not showing on Saturday to work when the manager would catch me at the last second and tell me I had to I took to cutting out the text in the employee handbook citing that working on scheduled hours required management to notify you three days in advance and leaving a letter with that portion of the handbook on his desk the following Monday there was nothing they could do since I was following the handbook to the letter at this point it was a game of who would blink first they could lay me off and I could draw unemployment on them or I would quit next on the list was safety they like to hassle me so much about trivial things that I figured they would appreciate me going through the plant and documenting every single violation and anything else that was not right I had a notebook that was filled with violations from one end of the plant to another things like crane lifts that were being used improperly with J hooks that the company was previously warned about the same J hooks they like to hide every time an inspector came through the plant welders that had frayed cords around piles of water tools being left on top of units that could fall off and hit someone lack of ventilation particle counts that were too high forklifts that were not serviced enough I tagged out equipment that technically shouldn't be used in its current state and locked out the forklifts that needed breaks or any sort of maintenance eventually the production manager took the bait and untagged one of the forklifts I had locked out due to having bad breaks anybody who knows lockout procedure can understand what a massive screw-up that is once I compiled my list of improvements I went to the government official who was overseeing safety and procedure since we often worked on government orders I gave him my notebook informed him of my manager taking the lockout off a defective forklift then went on break and waited about thirty minutes later I saw my manager walking back from the head office and looking mad beyond belief later I heard from someone who knows him that he got punished severely especially for the forklift from then on he avoided me and wouldn't even speak to me or look at me after that I continued to slow my work pace down and got a bit of satisfaction each day from the complete mess the place had become and how backed up it was every single day after I left the company I heard they hired five guys to do my job and that they still did a bad job at it had they treated me better instead of coming at me like they did that would have been still getting the top quality of work from me that they got when I first joined them and things would have went along just fine I can't even imagine how much money I must have cost a company by stick - the exact letter of the rules thanks for watching the video I hope you enjoyed it if you did please consider
