[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] everyone this is Chris keys for from your guitar hanging out with Phil of Monster Magnet how are you doing I'm good good do it be here in Nashville Nashville yeah we're talking before rolling I saw you guys in May in Berlin oh yeah and today I get to see you guys bought two blocks from my house three yeah right yeah this is really good so they don't care about that but they care about your guitars they do so let's uh yeah I think so filler these things yeah what'swhat's your baby what's number one well number one would be this this one this is a 2003 oh it's a 2003 2001 made okay looks well loved its well loved I got this from Gibson back then and this is a 54 reissue okay the Oxbow reissue they called it at that time and I just love I'm a big Les Paul jr. fan and I love the wraparound bridge yep and you know when this became available to me I jumped on it it's been my main we to to e-flat and see mm-hmm there's been my main a flat guitar for a very long time ever since I got it does it I imagine it being a 54 reissue it might have PAF style pickups or low output they originally this came with first buckers okay with the burst buckers at the time and then through sweating on them yeah over the years it kind of microphonic it out and I put wolf tones in here okay I love Wolf's two pickups this is uh Marshall heads I believe Marshall had or Marshall had two all right I don't know exactly I'd have to open uh I think this is Marshall head - he would correct me okay well wolf in Seattle his pickup innit you know I've been through so many different boutique pickups yeah I try I wanted to try you know I said I'm like the gear and early yeah and and I just found these to be really consistent they give me what what I want I don't like really hot pickups they always kind of like I don't know they amps are hot enough ya know and I heard it for a second and I think you get more tone out of the guitar with that that doesn't have that crazy high output but there's so many great pickups out there now you can't go wrong yeah a lot of these guys you're always trying new stuff or you kind of set on these little kind of set on these right now I've been set on these for a good almost 10 years Wow yeah yeah you know almost 10 because like I start swapping stuff out and honestly I may because I'm deaf I can't hear the difference yeah and a lot of times when I swap stuff out I always go back hmm - what I liked in the first place yeah I think a lot of people do that you know I really have haven't got anything that's just like oh wow that's gotta be in my guitar ya know and I think and I'm a believer that the guitar itself has way more to do with what those pickups are doing mm-hmm you know the piece of wood huh yeah ours constructed you can put just about you know this thing just acoustically sounds awesome to me yeah I can put whatever I want here the guitars still gonna sound good it's gonna scream yes I love this guitar it's well-worn this has been all over the world with me do you record with this like so mine fucker was yeah my father there's a lot of this guitar and I have got a few Les Paul juniors and some other s she's at home SG juniors like some 50s guitar alright and p90 than that I'm agile you 90s and I recently got a goal top conversion so it was an early 50s goal top converted to 57 specs Oh makes a little more playable yeah I'll show you the photos of that cool that's a lot that's on the record a lot cool and this when you pull up the next one tell us what strings you're using I know you got Dunlop it what's what Dunlop and Ernie balls okay the Dunlop's are 11 of 50 okay the Ernie balls are 11 248 I believe is that just could balance out between the 2 tunings yeah okay yeah yeah and on the heavy tunings it's all Dunlop but this would be for the C guitar this is a guitar that that's been around for a long time this is a 70s standard sandwich body you know and again this has had a DiMarzio PAF Pro on it for years and you know sometimes people get little finicky with 70s Gibson's because the Norlin and then people you're on board with it you love my guitar is good guitars good yeah I don't know it's like you know of course I like the fifties and sixties stuff yeah there's no denying that I like to the Custom Shop stuff a lot yeah that's great but I got this guitar years ago at this local guitar shop in Long Branch New Jersey it was called guitar Emporium I had a guitar that was stolen once I walked into the shop I played this I walked out with it and this has been on this guitar or has been on every Monster Magnet record since dopes Wow they've used this guitar and dopes to infinity damn I wasn't in the band yet but he used a lot of my gear on that record Wow and a lot of my Marshalls and this guitar was the guitar he used to tune down to see a lot and this has thirty thirteen to sixty I believe okay I go pretty heavy yeah you know I grew up I like heavier strings yeah do you like to fight for those fans I do I do I like and there's something about it you know there's something about a little bit of fight and you know in this guitar also with the PAF Pro I mean you know again talking about pickups DiMarzio and duncan I've been doing the pickup thing a long time they might know something yeah they got to kind of figure it out yeah and like and like I really love the early you know the PAF Pearl has a certain mid-range mm that I can't find on anything else you know and so for tuning down the sea I found this to be my favorite pickup in it I mean this guitar has had original PAF's in it mm-hmm everything like back when before this stuff was really hot yeah and really expensive I had all that stuff I put this thing in it and it's not a better than me that's all matters right yeah that's all that matters cool let's keep going down the line okay then we have I used so that's for sea and this is my other a flat guitar I got this from Gibson a few years back oh I love the color yeah so this is um I was I wanted an SG in the early 60s kind of vibe without all the stuff on it which is the two pneumatic and stop tail piece and I was talking to the guys at the Custom Shop in the Civil you know we'll build you one and and then I came up with the idea so well let's do it in an any unique color from from that time period yeah this is a Firebird color yeah and so this makes sense to old Miss Polly to the guys at the custom shop were awesome to do this for me and now of course I say I'm not a pick'em derp but these had this cuz Horace Tom Holmes pickups in it okay which is like pretty damaged yeah that's I've and bred a mutter blessed sound great in this guitar you know so but this is my other a flat so it stays in tune great has a lot of good resonance to it because for a few songs in this set I like I've always been a s gos ball guy yeah you know so for you know Garrett and I switch back and forth appease I know Les Paul I'll go to an SG mm-hmm if I'm I know Les Paul hole go to an SG it's like you know what like Alice Cooper used to do yeah Glenn Buxton you know like there's a certain sound between Falls when s cheese and you know we geek out on all that stuff what guitars work really good together cool and then you got Dave's guitar over here Garrett this one this is the most unique guitar in the house look at that the pickups caving in this is a look it says special on it now this is a guitar that Dave picked up I think on Australia really he just loves this thing yeah the phone does the show that's what he you like what you like yep Epiphone SG special know how often is he playing third guitar uh he plays it throughout the set he does a lot of effects okay a lot a lot of more the species yeah I was gonna ask like what's good at the pedalboard if I might as well yeah like is he more than or is the Kino certain songs where you guys have that work it's you know like looking for your Orban it gets Spacey is the noise get out so there's the noise this guy okay and then this is we brought this there's another one of Dave's guitars that I actually love this guitar this is a Gibson SG exit they made back and I want to say early 2000 alright it's just like it's a student momma guitar they did for a while it sounds great I had one I still have it in my studio at home and Dave wanted once where he picked out this chocolate brown yeah and we call it the brown bomber what's the brown bomber got a switch on four that's it's a coil tap that I don't think we ever use okay brain dad I'll be like on what's it sound like you know I don't know I just didn't know if had like an onboard boost for some destructive forces and fuzz no and cut stock pick up in if the thing sounds cool cool yeah yeah so we have this strung up to c4 if Garrett and I bus strings will break that baby out cool you got your big little stack here rock and roll this is my this is my stack so what we have here this is a late 90s plexi reissue that's been modded to be one of the hooks so JMP okay JMP a hundred watt master mom you know what they did to just or just literally mimic that or is there anything they did to alternative that you know back in New Jersey is Matt Welles you know can't very well known Amtech in the Northeast and I let Matt do what he does his magic yes he's he's been through so many answers work for so many different people I can excuse one of those guys it just he's pretty much worked with the band since dopes okay I've know since super judge because we chose Matt was a tech at a magic shop okay and I just shop a magnet recorded this records all the way back to like dinosaur vacuum engine yeah yeah Matt was around for like I brought well I wasn't again I wasn't an abandoned but dave was using a lot of my gear I had a busted wah pedal and not was there to fix it and then it ought turns out he's like an amp guy and I've been using them ever since so when I got this head I want her to stop bring in some of my J and peas out on the road because I love the master model J yeah and now they're getting training about you know if we had a thing going on with Marshall and they didn't have a master volume model at the time so I had Matt modest to have it to have it and it sits and all it is is the same kind of master that's in that everything else is stock on it what do you like about master volume amps versus you know there's the old school the gain yeah and and to me it's like it's kind of what I grew up with yeah you know and a lot of these guys get really carried away with the plexi this plexi dad no master no Marissa I grew up listening to like you know Thin Lizzy yeah mid 70s ac/dc you know a lot of those bands were using these kind of amps live they may not have used them in the studio I don't know I don't know what that well but I like to get the distortion from the amp and to get it out of non-master hat I got to turn it up so damn much that I'll be drowning everyone out yeah you know and and I just always liked it I always liked the master and the cabinet's are actually metropolis cabinets Oh George makes great amps yeah George Jones yeah yeah so these are his what does he call them true replica cabs okay so the top cabinet has this Celestion this has a 6 the 75 watt cream box in it the G 12 H comebacks and this the bottom cabinet has this to regular heritage G 12 H is the 30 Wow okay 30 I like the 30 Watts Chris yeah not finished 30 okay just the 12 yeah and that has the 55 Hertz this is beakers what do you like about the two two working together the two cabs and the two speaker configurations basically once I've had one in the studio for a while okay and I do like having caps with different speakers in them for the studio okay live I play so goddamn loud I don't know the difference just do a line check a little bit honest with you I can feel it but I keep this one on top because it tends to be a little darker okay then that one and this one will rip my head off a little bit if this is up here mm-hmm but they both I could go I could go head I could go with a half stack and be done with it you know and not really care yeah I love I love playing what a half stack as well cool and I imagine that staves that's Dave's rig right here the little fender combo he's using this is a twin reissue blackface reissue and Dave comes into the mr. Eko alright the SIB mr. Eko then it goes into a TC Electronics flash back into a good old carbon copy and now these just for vocals no these are for guitar guitar effects okay then so a lot of it and then then they loop in and out of each other and he manipulates them yeah I was gonna say so he's doing that on stage rather than the crouched down okay this is all the space for this is like the space rock stuff here and you will hear it later I can't wait that's premiere for already freaking up speaking of pedals let's talk about your pedal my pedal boards right here alright Phil here's my favorite time let's hear it a pedal the pedal time yeah but first let's just hear amp alright so this is the Amster rock and roll rock and roll song classic rock you know [Music] [Applause] nothing wrong with that right and then you got the all right first question I'm gonna have for you dopes to infinity what so why we using here in the pedals on pedal wise that's on the C guitar pedal wise I'm using this really that's analog man's silver Matta tubescreamer oh okay Mike is one of my favorite always been my favorite yeah email great great stuff been my favorite of the powell game I met Mike before the internet he was handing out he was handing out a flyer at a New York guitar show like I can mod your to you know I was right tube screamers are being risky reissued I could put it you know and I was like alright great you know and and we've been friends ever since and mike has given me a lot of help over the years with pedals in the back then he was like before everybody he was yeah you know hand was him the other guy I don't think who gets enough respect in the whole boutique pedal game is a Jack from prescription electronics I was used we use the his yard box a lot in the studio I always had one of those on my board for years and those two guys really early on when I joined magnet back in 2008 they really helped me out a lot it's going to get my sound going in those days and I always give them a lot of credit a lot of respect for being in it and starting a whole wave that we see now yeah everyone's doing that kind of stuff yeah Mike is just fantastic cool you know so well let's hear that peddle I know that you can't play it with the I just always like to screamers yeah he they don't really do all that much but they kind of kind of suck everything in a little bit for me when I want it when I go to Leeds yeah if I want to tighten up my rhythms if I want it like sloshy ER I stay off of it if I want to tighten things up like it doesn't do that much of a volume boost you know no it's more like just an emphasis yeah yeah yes like yeah and they even know that another thing is like I'm the kind of guy like you see all these copies of tube screamers it's a tube screamer that does more of this it's a tube humor I've tried all those yeah it's like I always go back to the tube screamer but then again Maxon did this which I love I love always love the maximum pedals because you know it's hand in hand what I've been I was back then and they made all this stuff the SST 9 Pro so this is like kind of like what it I don't know exactly what the hell it does is I'm brain dead but that uh that one brings a little more to the table a little more to the table that's more gain it has been mean it has you can adjust the tone and you can adjust the mids I always crank mids on guitar I find it that's like the happy place that's where the car she lives yeah yeah work typically so this will be my lead boost you know if I have this going [Music] you know what I mean yeah it'll just I always explain it in Kevin ballin back from God like yeah good friend of mine it's just Anton density that I look for that weight you know use it a lot in the studio we can see there's a good word for that it's just yeah and then the other one that might hit me too is this this bad Bob loose I just fell in love with it that even off [Music] [Applause] how do you pick between those three tall I mean know the cow do you know when you're gonna play one versus the other I normally don't cook and I normally don't have that much stuff and honestly for me this is fun yeah well bars planes fun yeah we're just like you know hey you know what I feel like using this on this song tonight cool you know what I mean well I don't get too locked into anything and when we swap and stuff out and the other gem here that I just picked up from George and you know you guys should know about this is it's his new super boost thank this fucking thing [Music] Wow that's not bad I mean George metropolis knows what he's doing you know way to find all these guys at NOAA and so I can friends with the right people yeah [Music] so the way he explained it to me you know he does the the he makes the Metroplex in the superplex with the added boost age and this is kind of like taking that and having the boost on your board it's kind of cool so you can set this thing up just to give your amp a little bit more yeah take a little bit away give it a little bit more you know bottom a little bit more mid emphasis whatever you want it's like an extension of of the marshal gotcha which I like and you know what I love about George's stuff all of his amps really retain that big amp thing and the heart of a Marshall ya know what I mean he never really got a you know there's so many people went to that smaller than box thing yeah and he staged he's like I'll do that when Michigan dude come on man bigger the better but that thing just sounds great to me now are these okay gang then I gang petals a lot yeah I think that last the last combination was the one that's yes [Music] [Applause] right then we have over here I love the kicked back wah thing and that's Russian style yep the daredevil atomic cock it's great about this pedal it's great about this one it has to blend knob so [Music] so I'll actually use the one to talk to Johnny about making it in a smaller format Oh even smaller than that no no no no no the original was being bigger yeah yeah it's urgent - this is great for the board you know I use that for leads just to cut through some stuff yeah and you know just to cut through someone Dave's got that thing on we need something that's gonna cut through that that's like the fog of war right there and then I'm on that fuzz pedal wise I'm always swapping my fuzz on tour but the last couple shows I've been using this once again Mike Sun bender mark force Sun bender then this I've been using the Logan Square destroyers more of a silicon-based fuck doesn't ask what kind of like where do you follow yourself are you like Silicon to me yeah I'm like what I'm like whatever I feel like using that day yeah and I like this one a lot David main from damn hmm differential audio manifestations in the UK Dave's a big fan of ours and his pedals are just phenomenal then the Super Bee is more like a tone bender with a little more low end okay and sometimes I feel like when I switch to this when I go back and forth to this one the tone a bonnet [Music] [Applause] do you ever mess with fuzz-face as much you get you know oh I know I know benders I'm Atonement I like that tone benders the best yeah and then I do my favorite thing is this to get that Stooges 5 yeah you know it fuzz before the wah that's an older Geoffrey cheese wizard wah which is ever since I plugged that why and they've been it's the lawn huh yeah I like it you know it has enough throw it has a little bit more growl to it I love that and then I go in so everything will go into the mr. Eko okay which is an amazing [Applause] [Applause] I speak two planets baby so we could do something I thought you do some of that so I use the mr. Eko like Dave uses for more the crazy stuff yeah the SIP stuff is great you know so you have the volume out you got the mix repeats and the slam button which just you hit that it kind of simulates banging the arm on an Echoplex okay and then it goes into come complete oscillation yeah then the other one this has been tried I've been on my board for a very long time the 8080 it's just like a classic [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] very rich sound that sounds so good and then yeah what's that that's the only pedal I'm not really familiar with the spring chicken yeah reverb [Applause] that song before yeah so that's that and then over here you know I swap these two out quite a bit you know once I got this from George this was on the board this is the king of tune I'm sure you guys oh yeah oh god yeah what what Mike did with this pedal I don't know what he did but it's it's a classic you guys know what this is I had Mike sign at a while ago I love it and that's us we love the rundown on the pedal may have killer and and is that I guess the fuzz is kind of what people hear when it's you know whether it's still to infinity or anything off like spine a guy or spine to God I think I can go for the fun okay and then then the other face Lord and shit like that [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] and then my last thing I'll tell you is like the one thing that I think a lot of guitar players forget about it the most important effect you have as your axis at any time is this thing it's called a volume knob that people don't use it now that I'm using anymore back in the day they used to use yeah a lot of times I'll keep all my stuff line and I'll kick this back you'll be living like six or seven yeah and then I'll just crank it up for leads yeah you know and it's great that thing is loud yeah there's a drone flying around here fo whoa did anyone order Amazon yeah and so yeah I used my volume not quite a bit cool and we're not going out no come on put it out after that show um I'll do it it's your turn no good not after you did that show Phil was the last chance we get to say goodbye to the folks all right from your guitar thank you guys very much hey everybody thanks for watching the latest rig rundown guess what every week we upload a brand new rig rundown to prayer guitar calm a full week before it's available here on youtube so to get your gear fix as soon as humanly possible go to premier guitar comm forward slash rig rundown and while you're there be sure to sign up to get an email notification so you're the first to know as soon as each week's new rig rundown is available Cheers see you soon
