hello friends and welcome back to our slash I don't work here lady today we have three stories waiting for us so let's get started Karen insists she doesn't work here a little background I have an almost two year old who's a bit of a finicky eaters many kids that HR there's one brand of little blueberry flavored heart-shaped rice puffs that he absolutely loves and we use them as rewards for when he accomplishes something like successfully using the potty or putting away his toys sometimes we also give them to him just because we love them he caused them puffs and practically chants it when he knows he's about to get some it's pretty adorable but I digress now I'm a six foot three inch man and very broad shouldered I'm pretty calm pleasant person most of the time and I try to make friends with everyone I meet but I've been told that I'm intimidating just because of my size I'm aware of this and try not to loom over people or throw my weight around but sometimes people get skittish just because I'm there so anyway I'm at a major chain grocery store after work picking up a few things that my wife asked me to grab on the way home I remember that we're low on puffs and swing by the baby aisle to get some even though my wife didn't ask for them specifically lo and behold there's Karen and her smart business casual jacket with her overloaded cart standing right in front of the puffs she's holding a box of baby oatmeal reading the back of it I calmly watch as she puts the box back picks up another box of the same brand of the same powdered oatmeal just a different size and starts reading that again I wait but I'm standing there wondering what could possibly be different between the two she then picks up the first box and starts comparing them they're identical other than box size and I'm tired of waiting for it's only been 2 or 3 minutes which isn't that long but I'm ready to get home to see my kids so I say excuse me ma'am could I Karen without looking up I don't work here me right could I please okay I said I don't effing work here except she said the actual word is she glared death at me me yeah I get that I just need Karen get away from me just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I'm gonna help somebody a man buy baby stuff me look I just want that cereal I say as I pointed the puffs on the show okay don't touch me I said I don't work here manager I need a manager now there was a nice older lady stocking shelves at the other end of the aisle I've talked to her a few times over the last few months she always has been really sweet and always tells me all about her grandson who coincidentally has the same first and middle name that I do she knows me so I'm not worried when she heads over she's not a manager but being older a lot of people assume she is I'll call her W for worker W is there a problem here Karin this man is harassing me me I just wanted to Karin I don't care what you want I won't be bullied turning to W I demand you have him thrown out I won't put up with this w ma'am can we please calm down I'd like to K don't you tell me to calm down he's the problem w ma'am I can't help you out if you don't calm down please can and she turns her hands palm up in a pretty Universal non-threatening position okay don't touch me I'll call corporate what's your name I've been pretty irritated but I haven't gotten mad until now I worked customer service for a lot of years and I'm used to being treated poorly by seemingly insane people so I've been trying to remain calm once she threatens to report this sweet old lady for just trying to defuse the situation I get angry standing up straight looming forward just slightly and with my best semi loud dad voice that I usually reserved for when my kids about to do something that's gonna get him hurt I say lady I just wanted to buy that cereal for my kid and your cart is in the way I know you don't work here I'm not an idiot I was just trying to ask if I could reach past you to get it Karen goes completely pale and frankly looks like she's about to wet herself she silently grabs her cart and scoots it back two or three feet I smile and say in his calm and friendly a manner as I can manage thank you ma'am I grabbed the puffs put them in my cart and walk away have a nice evening a few seconds of silence passed as I walked toward the registers before I hear W say ma'am if you still need that number for corporate I can get that for you this is my flat not a shop to quickly make sense of the title my fiance and I moved into a flat together one-bedroom flat above a shop which happens to be a tailor shop of some kind it's a small place but we turned this into our perfect home that's another story of how we improved our home anyway after a few months we settled in and I was walking home from work the perks of living very close to work I work in a petrol station as part of the supermarket so we have uniforms that clearly state that we work there anyway so on the way to the flat we unlock a big door that gets us into the main sort of building this goes for all our neighbors we have to keep that door locked at all times just then there's a few stairs to our flat anyway since this huge door we go through first happened to be right next to this tailor shop minding my own business as usual trying to get myself home ready to chill out I hear a lady call out to me as I was about to shut the door and lock it I opened the door thinking it's probably one of our neighbours who forgot a key or any of the neighbours guess as soon as I opened the door a giant quilt was dumped into my arms hello my dear I was wondering if you can patch up this hole in the corner of this for me and I heard from a friend that you can make blankets out of old clothes as like a memory of people I clocked on this lady thinks I'm the owner of the tailor shop which was closed me oh I'm sorry I'm not the shop owner the door - that's right there I pointed to it and realized they were closed and it's closed the lady but you are the tailor shop are you me I'm afraid I'm not I don't own it and I don't work there either the lady pointing at my flat keys and the door which I just opened which I can't wait to close then what's this place then you have to be the tailor's then me this is the door I go through to enter my flat you know where I live I do in fact live above the tailor shop but it doesn't mean that I own that to the lady that's just ridiculous stop messing around when can you sort out this quilt now in my head I thought I can easily sew and if I had a sewing kit I'd have it done for just to make a bit of extra cash but I didn't mean look handing her quilt back I don't work or own the tailor's pointing at my uniform in the logo on my jacket I work over there pointing to the supermarket where I worked long but shift since 6 a.m. I even opened my jacket and showed her my name badge and my clocking card to really prove to her that I worked somewhere other than the tailors lady said oh I'm so sorry love but do you know what time the shop will open me I don't have the slightest clue but I would guess tomorrow I pointed at their telephone number advertised on the shop if you write down that number it's best to try to call them to find out save you traveling all the way over here for nothing the lady stormed off without a thank you for at least helping your Filipino so you must work here this happened maybe three or four years ago it's one of those interactions that I haven't forgotten so first a little background my father used to work in China he since transferred to a different country because of this I would spend much of my childhood in China and Hong Kong I developed a little ritual whenever we were traveling which is really just me stopping by the airport bookstore and bringing home my latest haul of books when this story happens we were in HK IA and we'd already passed immigration we were already inside my mom and our bags were hanging by the gate waiting for boarding and as usual I'm in the bookstore looking for books to buy I have my headphones plugged in the Bose sound sport wireless headphones and my phone in hand trying to look at Goodreads for ratings and or synopsis references because I'm a little paranoid about making a fool out of myself I usually keep my music levels to a minimum when I'm out in public so I can hear people around me but because I'm fairly introverted I keep both ears plugged in hopes that no one approaches me it usually works usually but not that day so there I was looking for books I could buy when this lady karin approaches me she didn't look like a caring to be honest she was taller than me at five to nearly everybody's taller than me she had long hair and some trendy looking clothes she reminded me of the typical models you see in Chinese magazines actually excuse me she says and my deeply ingrained instincts to be polite kicked in I turned to her and asked yes how may I help you note that by this point I already have a book in one hand because she interrupted me mid browsing through reviews of said book Karen I'm trying to look for this issue of name of magazine me confused but still trying to be polite have you checked the magazine stance I think the question might have ticked her off because I made her look stupid the store was small enough that you can just stand in the middle and see the entire store and if you're trying to look for a magazine the first thing you would logically do is approach the magazine stance with labels for the word magazine written in four different languages which was what she did of course Karen now looking annoyed yes I already did that that's why I'm asking you me I'm sorry I don't know where to find the magazine you're looking for I'd never heard of the magazine maybe you can go to the cashier and ask them if they know at that point the only staff present was the cashier maybe two feet from us then Karen looking even more annoyed as she says how can you not know you work here me now realizing what's happening oh I don't I'm just looking for a book I can by holding up the book in my hand Karen looked less annoyed and more confused she looks at the book in my hand back to my face takes in the clothes I'm wearing and I think Oh she'll finally realize I don't work here because I'm obviously not wearing the staff uniform red polo shirt with company name name badge black socks compared to the all-black attire I'm wearing black jacket shirt leggings but then she says the magic words but you're filipino me now surprised umm yes Karen with all the entitlement possible so you work here me what I'm Filipino so I must work here for those of you who don't know there are many Filipinos in Hong Kong Filipinos if I remember correctly do make up the largest ethnic minority in Hong Kong many of these Filipinos work as domestic workers at Hong Kong so I guess the common racist conception is that all Filipinos in Hong Kong are workers there Karen's still waiting for my response looking more and more ticked off I just stared at her eyebrow raised and lips pursed trying to summon all the sassiness I possibly could after a while Karen seems to get flustered by me staring her down she mutters an excuse and shuffles along to the cashier who helps her I mean that's it it's not a super exciting story just incredibly annoying this dumb racist stereotype that reduces Filipinos to such a degree that any sort of identity beyond domestic work disappears makes me want to strangle people I have massive respect for overseas Filipino workers I grew up knowing a whole network of OFWs because my dad's an OFW and all these people have become our extended families which is why I hate it when other people look down on Filipinos for being domestic workers overseas seriously once upon a time while attending international school related event somebody told us Filipinos aren't supposed to be good at English because we're domestic workers anyway story for another day under a different subreddit but yeah thanks for listening thank you very much for listening and I hope you enjoyed it and if you did please be sure to leave a comment like and subscribe I really appreciate it and we'll see you soon
