Richard Petty Car Collection Tour

hi I'm Dennis gage and welcome to my classic car well today I'm in level across North Carolina with Richard Petty himself and we cruise around one of the new Richard Petty challengers Richard this is a lot of fun I'm gonna have a good time today first thing you know you're an 80 mile line you just get up [Music] how was your petty [Music] [Applause] [Music] this almost looks scary so which is you you basically I mean you were born and raised here like right here yeah I was born in this house right up here yeah and you know they didn't didn't go to the hospitals and stuff in the doctors brought the babies as far so your boy my brother and myself were born in that house that's my grandmother's green Davis house well like you say you're not really a collector you're kind of an accumulator you've had opportunities to buy something you see something you like to have you just get it and throw it in the back of the house or whatever in the music now the museum in Holland yeah that's how the museum came about had stuff everywhere around put it so that Park that the house had stuff in the Attic and in the basement and one day we said okay let's just do a museum justify the house so like you've done the same thing you got this a huge collection of guns but it's just stuff that's kind of come to you yeah you just see them and you say man I like it and the last thing way with the dolls we just give her a corner over she's been collecting dolls and when you go to our museum it's not really a race and Museum it's a pity music yeah it should all the stuff that's it shows everything from the first corslet like my dad run until the cars today but then has also got the life between there we did things beside races that's right yeah actually a life we have a little bit of a life aside right then we've got a little bit of everything in there so this is pretty interesting place yeah well now you got the shop Petty's garage new you know you got these great fabricators and you're building cars actually this is this is one of your guys sister Tony's yeah we look at Tony worked on this thing for years in his backyard and then he he'd have to take it out and get it painted reducing of different things well it's an awful print and he did a little bit of everything to this truck this is the hot rod guys dream in other words it's got a little bit of new stuff a little bit of old stuff anything in between and they cram too he crammed a supercharger yeah he went through everything you've got a plastic baby that you can look down and see all the wind works and all the work they do not pinstriping and all that stuff so but these are the cars the petty challengers yeah there's a paid challengers these are what you're playing that we're playing with you know they reworked the ends in a little bit put a supercharger on the thing it stays pretty pretty stock from the body standpoint but you got bigger brakes bigger suspension you know bigger wheels tires sway bars you know the whole the whole deal and if you want one you can have one built by Petty's garage yeah you can have one just exactly like that right tire we're gonna I want to probably want to take this out later so you know this is again kind of back to your accumulation this is one that can be you I need some guys in in Richmond Virginia and they was cleaning up one day and had this thing sitting out out back and at the time I got this we were running Pontiacs and so the guy said would you like to have that deal and I said yeah I do with it it's all sitting down old rested and beat-up and so he dragged it down here like it stayed here for eight of ten years and then my wife I was getting ready from the city of birthday so my wife sent it back to Virginia and the guys redoing the thing she's beautiful the grandkids really lived it because Scott rolled up when there's no room no seat belts they could jump back and just have a good time they had a good old time was fine well how about the about the guys what's this I have two of my daughter's learning to drive because it's got straight gears and most everything was automatic yes look you got to learn on a straight straight geared car so we didn't put a lot of miles on that thing well mother Buick I said there's a big picture there in the in the office you and jr. jr. Johnson yeah just pull Homer rude man yeah the road man all right these things are tanks man they was the enemy and what's what's neat about driving an old car like that I mean that was the very best that Detroit kept with that was modern at that time I mean the very best brakes tires wheels in a motor everything and now you're giving that thing said oh yeah take a Technic just everything so I'm glad we've come along now this it makes it makes you appreciate what they've done to know how to mobile today well they also pre you know I always appreciated the race drivers from back then because I mean herding these things around the racetrack yeah no power steering any of that kind of stuff no suspension deal yeah and it's flopping around all over the deal so they were busy driving nothing easy the Superbird back here this is one of the cars you were kind of famous for yeah they're really wanted one of the super birds to show the difference between what it was stock and then at the museum we've got the blue new car as you go in that's a real all-out race car with the Hemi and all the big been race car but that wing really did that was to do that was a deal where the wing was adjustable yeah the car was almost impossible to spin out it's the cause of the track well their deal with the uprights that hold the wing were like rudders and when the car gets sideways it would hit those rudders and this kind of straighten itself back up and it was amazing how how safe the car was at the met understand that must've been kind of fun well it was a lot of fun it was one of the deals that you knew with that car you exposed to winter a lot of pressure on the drivers and then this is just a stock one that is just ridiculous trickery stock well you know you talk about you know stock cars and how they started out as stock cars but you look inside this now and what they do to protect the driver is just it's just unreal you you know you go back in and you look at one of the older cars and stuff all we had was made of a seat belt seat belt a shoulder harness at a hand extinguisher and I was about it okay you know but now they put them in cocoons they got deals around their necks around their heads and stuff so they're really setting in them in a cocoon they set there and that's raising they have to have spotters and they'll because they can't see they can't look around then it got full face helmets you know we run open face helmets and you you had to know who the other guy was when you run at him or when he ran a cheap well so you know these are the cars you got kind of your accumulators here but back in the shop you got all sorts of projects going on yeah we're back we'll take you back and show you what we're doing they they doing a little bit of everything back there - can't wait let's go i Richard these are one of the weirder cars yeah plenty a cat civil a everybody really got into the racing and mid 80s and and so they trying to say okay what can we do to a stock car and make it a little bit quicker and all that stuff so in 86 Pontiac came with this fastback deal and this car here is the original car that they pieced together to show to the people that this is the kind of race car that they wanted oh so this is actually like a demo or something yeah this car is got no serial numbers or anything this one if they're supposed to crush and as it went out the back door we kind of put it on our trailer instead of somebody else's track we wound up with a thing and this one here they put some kind of blower dealer got it it's a kind of drag race deal the rules say you got to have a seat a second seat okay but they needed a place for the cooling tank so they just set the tank and I see in fact they had it on the floor to begin with and I forgot to read in the rule books and we're gonna have a seat so this is exactly they're putting in the seat now this isn't actually one of your cars no this this is some Kyle Petty fan the Kyle okay and he he's such a fan that this is he rides around into everyday even got cow 42 license plate this is a this is an important thing here to see that all I've got then - you can tap it is unbelievable that it that is in repeater place this is for kids that this is chronically and seriously your kids they can't go to a regular camp mm-hmm they have to be somebody with them you're under doctor's orders and all this stuff but when you go over there we've got swimming pool where they drain a wheelchair that's rolling right in you know all this kind of stuff they they can go bowling they go zipline they ride horses why was I was just amazed that's just it's a it's a wonderful it just really took sat your heart it does the hardest part about the whole thing is when them kids coming so it's trying to get them to go home because they're doing things they've never done and every day there's something different for them to do again it just opens up a whole different world for ya giving back big time that's big time [Music] you do Hudsons that's a Hudson and acquitting the Hemi engine so why do you wanted sort of a highway race car or a hot rod a hide he wanted to look stock so when he pulls that and races it motor they know something's going on it's not a six-cylinder engine that's one of the Hudson Hornets and a new me in its that what went yeah oh that's that's an old model here me that's not the not the latest deal oh that's a 426 a me they say all these all these stiffs already make you know they have to fit it and make the brackets and all the wires put a new dash in the thing and when they get through with a really good smoker that's a no let me tell you and that that is a drag cool that is a serious second machine and it's built from the ground up here we just came laid all the pieces and all the parts and all the stuff and it's fully tub did everything right I mean it looks tugged yeah yes it's all chrome moly underneath of it and everything in it and it's been inspected so uh well we were looking at your hot rod pickup so you do that kind of stuff and you do this kind of stuff well he learned on his own so then we bring that expertise in and he's got a little experience at it so it goes with it but he had all this experience doing the race course when we used to start with like I said just straight bars and pieces of flat metal and they made a race car so a car coming out of Petty's garage has got all that race expertise that race history behind yeah they got all the guys all being here got you know 15 20 years experience on race car so route cords are easy well this baby this almost looks scary it's gonna be interesting to see it run for the first time yeah well well you know you've got you got that petty challenger that black petty challenger that would be fun to see run that that is unique that is a neat car why don't we just take you a ride in that claim see what's going on let's do that let's go [Music] Richard this is one of this is the number one this is the number one the Richard Petty we got Gregory's here your GM here let's look at this baby tell me what all you did did to this thing this is the first of our production cars we're creating out of the shop here that are basically an aftermarket version of what they've been doing for 60 years have hopping up the car so this car we took and did everything we could do to it from the performance standpoint its brakes wheels tires exhaust system the engine has been upgraded on the bottom in to withstand the 9 pounds of boost with a supercharger so we're 610 horsepowers to the crankshaft so there's pretty healthy real sinister - yeah and of course I think it's a great car yeah but the coolest thing is this badge you liked it I loved about I mean it was like made for that Rick I think Dodge made a great job for you we can take that baby out and drive around I don't see why not made it drive all right well let's drive it then you driving a whole shirt okay thank you get out of the garage without screaming so [Music] that's nice and that's a short throw yeah as well say like the shifter Wow I can tell this there's some power here you get up to speed before you realize it first thing you know you're in a team eyeline you just get up speed I'm just getting going here [Music] there's a lot of punch there I think is a good singing to it it just it's not got a flat spot in it oh and he don't come in it's just there old man I'd love to see you drive this [Music] the South's most feed on what a driver that's 65 we brought it back in one piece that's always a good thing I'm always happy I can believe in Wow yeah it was a ride that was neat thank you Richard yes sir Thank You bud so Richard do you really like the show you think this one of that shows racing good click that beer
