I was there, actually. It was nice. Although as the video shows the talk was less about atheism and more about Dawkins' life, because he had just released his first autobiography.
thanks that was a great listen, i like both those guys & have read a lot from both of them but had no idea about this meeting.
I have a question for anyone on this board. How do you feel about their discussion on atheism? Do you think Dawkins kinda evangelistic approach to atheism is weakened at all by it Greene's comments?
I think it's funny because I feel it might totally be how i heard the comments through my own experience, but the point i "heard" Dawkins making was that his sense of pride or self-worth or identity would be destroyed if all the energy he put into his science was just figuring out a puzzle some supernatural being had set up. Greene's point about being a physicist, and starting much earlier then a biologist in the study of origins was swaying, as well as the rest of the discussion, for me to agree with Greene.
The idea i came away with is: no matter what your stance, the world is far too complex for anyone to ever grasp "the answer to life the universe and everything" so whatever you call that mystery, it is going to be totally unknowable in your lifetime so might as well leave that sort of thing up to philosophers for the time being. Instead of fighting non-science with science you should be evangelistic for science like Greene.
TL;DR bold
