[Music] [Music] rich man poor man is a 1976 american television miniseries based on the 1969 novel of the same name by irving shaw that aired on abc in one or two hour episodes mostly on monday nights over seven weeks beginning on the first of february it was produced by universal television and was the second time programming of this nature had been attempted the first tv mini series qb7 had aired also on abc in 1974. these projects proved to be a critical and rating success and were the forerunner for similar projects based on literary works such as roots and shogun the film stars peter straw snake knowlton susan blakely it spawned the sequel rich man poor man book 2 which aired from september 1976 through march 1977 based on the bestselling 1969 novel by ervin shaw it spanned the period from 1945 through the late 1960s and followed the divergent career courses of the impoverished german-american jordaek brothers brody peter straws was the titular rich man a well-educated and very ambitious entrepreneur who triumphed over his background and constructed a corporate and political empire poor man tom nick nalte was a rebel who eventually turned to boxing to support himself axel and mary were their parents and julie prescott was rudy's lifelong sweetheart who eventually married him later another important character appears the dangerous and eccentric falconati lifelong nemesis of the jordaic brothers who is intent on killing them while the first series spans a 20-year period between 1945 and 1965 the second series begins in 1968. the series became a huge success in the countries that aired it the mini-series makes a major plot change from the original novel in the book julie prescott is a minor character who briefly dates rudy her story is actually that of gretchen jordaig rudy and thomas sister who does not appear at all in the mini-series although he had been a working actor for years prior to this production nick nolte became a star after appearing in this very popular miniseries in fact the network wanted his character to appear in the sequel they were planning and nalter refused to alter the story to make that possible peter strauss also became an in-demand actor after this project as a 12 serialization of the novel by irving shaw rich man poor man was more an extended special than a television series unlike most series which has spied to run forever it was scheduled for a limited engagement unlike other weekly shows which have no ending but only fall away when their ratings deteriorate rich man poor man had an overall structure a beginning middle and end kojak and colombo go on and on held together by the constancy of the lead characters rich man poor man constituted a form rather than a format ironically the program was such a runaway hit that it will unquestionably be turned into a regular series next fall where pawn it will have to revert to format other novels have been serialized on commercial television which got the idea from the british but none has been such a smash as the sure work the dramatized adaptation scored in the nelson top 10 every week it was on the year averaging more than 40 percent of the viewing audience moreover it did not usually inherit a large audience from the preceding abc show usually a made for tv movie or a 19-minute special but instead brought on a mammoth switch-over in channels at 10 p.m drawing many viewers from cbs that better than anything else signifies a strong show desperate for a new kind of mass appeal program to free them from a start defying reliance on sitcoins action hours and variety shows network programmers welcome the evidence that viewers conditioned for so long to episodic fare will get caught up in a serialized continued next week story in prime time most earlier attempts with such shows notably their survivors and beacon hill this season were instant failures peyton's place had fared well for a few seasons but came apart when abc dobled the exposure and asked viewers to give two nights a week to following its story abc has another book dramatization in the works alex haley's roots the history of a black family through seven generations beginning with its african origins will be published only months before its tv serialization begins next january it will be produced by david walper meanwhile nbc has committed itself to a similar showcase for next year to be produced by universal which will serialize a number of popular novels under the umbrella title bestsellers but while enthusiasm is growing in television for the finned series consisting of 5 to 12 episodes the trade has been unable to coin a better name for the form than miniseries the way is fraught with danger for the programmer for instance to preempt a cereal for coverage of a special event becomes an extremely delicate matter the audience that is waiting for the next installment will not take kindly to an interruption and since the programs have to play in sequence the advanced promotion for future episodes could get seriously fouled up when a scheduled outing is missed furthermore a short-term serial that is an early bust in the ratings cannot be cancelled if eight shows say a promise to complete the plot eight shows have to be aired the viewer who is hooked cannot be abandoned in mid-story conventionally the network's ratings race is measured over the course of a full season from september through march or april whenever the reruns begin in earnest for the advertiser preparing to buy ahead for the coming fall it is useful to know which network has consistently been the most popular convention has it then that cbs is number one again this season but the idea of charting the race over a full season dates back to the years before there was a so-called second season the january february fix up time when the turkeys are yanked out of the schedule a new contenders installed some advertisers and wall street analysts as well now believe that the true measure of a network is where it stands in the months since january because that gives a better indication of how it will look and perform in the coming fall by that yardstick abc is number one with cbs running second and nbc in last place abc had been running third until the mid-season changes were made but then it rallied with such new entries as rich man poor man laverne and shirley bionic woman and donny and mary and its coverage of the olympics it has been the front runner ever since what makes this news is that abc has held an undisputed claim on third place through virtually all of the past 20 years fifteen months ago abc did so poorly that it was said to have finished fourth in the three horse race do furies expect different things of public television than they do of commercial television the answer may be learned next fall when a number of commercial stations including w new tv channel 5 here in new york begin carrying a new bbc dramatic series that would have been a natural for the public broadcasting service it's called fall of eagles and deals in 13 episodes with the collapse of three great dynasties of europe the habsburgs the hohenzollern and their romanos during and after the first world war time life films having co-financed the series has the distribution rights in this country and chose to syndicate it to commercial stations rather than sell it to pbs this is because public television is limited in what it can pay for a program but the series is a period piece whose characters speak british english attributes that traditionally have been considered uncommercial and it is not action-packed ale aspect that most viewers dedicated to commercial television have come to expect if not require moreover the hour-long episodes are to be broken up for sport announcements which wouldn't have been the case on public television [Music] and that's all for now don't forget to leave a like
