Rewind: Lloyd Bridges on "Airplane," "Sea Hunt," Bogart, Three Stooges & more

mr bridges working uh as a president yesterday that wasn't your first time your first connection with the president of the united states isn't it true that as a baby you got a special award from president taft there's a taffy the fattest boy baby i think my my dad rigged that because he was running that that theater at the time nickelodeon in those days and nickel got you in to see the picture saturdays and uh i think he wanted to increase business so he had this this contest with fattest boy baby and he had his baby in there and gave him the prize it didn't seem right to me you know with the with airplane uh some people were surprised that you uh could do physical comedy but isn't it true about the back in the 40s that you did a short film with the three stooges that's right yeah when i was under contract at columbia they put me in everything to get their money's worth out of me uh yeah joey brown i did some things with him too and what was it like working with the three stooges was that a little bit different well it was it was a lot of fun they improvised all over the place and you had to be very careful what they were going to hit you with next but it was it was a good experience for me um i'm just wondering one of your uh your previous films uh sahara with the humphrey bogart you played a british soldier in that now that that role got you a lot of acclaim now do you do you have fond memories of that movie well mainly because of bogart he uh kind of took me under his wing he was so nice so sweet to me as i was sort of starting out and and uh i guess he wanted to warm me up a little bit and i'd have dinner with him and i just loved the man he was it was great to work with if we could uh skip a few years forward to uh the sea hunt now is that true that uh originally that you just wanted to do that show for for one season was it a surprise that the show snowballed into such a success well no i i i have been doing a lot of live tv uh up until that time and and uh knowing a variety of roles and i was very concerned about about the fact that i might be typed as a diver you know which really kind of happened because i did it for four years and those days we've made 39 episodes a year and i think i did get kind of tight there for a while but that was the main reason why i was a little concerned about uh not going on with it now when you did airplane and you had such a memorable role appearance in airplane did you find that a lot of people were surprised that you could do comedy so well i think probably so yeah howard koch was responsible for me doing that and it was a clever idea i don't know it was his or her or her jim abrams and pat proff but their idea was to have different actors who were very serious actors and the heroes of all the the things that they were involved with like see how i was mike nelson who would never do any wrong and and uh same thing with bob stack he was a hero so it was a nice twist i think here if we we're in this we screw up everything you know it's a cute idea now with that with hot shots uh the part two how do you find that the the crew and the the talent uh treat you do they treat you uh i mean you're such a legend in show business do they treat you with a little bit of uh irreverence do you find that uh the older i get i guess i i realize that sometimes i resent it a little when they feel like they want to help me because but i i i know it's out of love and i i really appreciate that the crews are they're just a special breed they're wonderful to work with and they're so concerned about the quality of the picture and then takes so much time it's it's always a pleasure working the picture i'm doing a story on the mementos that actors keep from their films now over the years what kind of specific items uh souvenirs have you kept from your your films and tv shows uh well i've a lot of wardrobe that i've kept you know boots and hats and and like they for instance i still have my my uh black and white jacket that i had in sealant and uh had my double hose regulator
