it's the ultimate secret desire of most youtubers that one day if we work hard enough and make something that's ultimately good enough for mainstream audiences we'll be able to stop being youtubers and it is this mindset which has inspired create or after create or to take time away from their lucrative careers to instead focus on a completely alien and all-around less profitable art form filmmaking that it should be said that many people do indeed succeed in making that leap bo burnham is currently considered one of the most promising filmmakers of our generation and if you consider Donald Glover to be a youtuber before literally anything else then you've probably been living under a pretty dark rock for the past 10 years but today's video isn't about any of those cases because those people by all accounts are no longer considered to be youtubers today we're talking about movies made by youtubers for YouTube audiences which never gained any recognition outside of that youtuber movie someone wanted me to pay money for I told people on Twitter Reddit and my patron that I was going to be making this video and I was taking suggestions and so anytime I review something in this video that was suggested to an audience or an audience member inspired me to make I will be giving them a little shout out I'm trying to do this a lot more so if you want to join in on this then you can follow my reddit or my Twitter or my patreon my one unofficial rule for this whole thing was one simple thing no channel awesome movies so my sincere apologies to all of these people and with that it's time to jump right into our video should I keep the Seleka I'm kind of tempted to if you haven't already guessed this video is sponsored by Dollar Shave Club a premier service that delivers top-notch self care products right to your door go to dollarshaveclub.com slash Quinten reviews to get your first starter set for just 5 dollars I've been using Dollar Shave Club for a super long time and later in this video I'm going to tell you all about exactly how great it is but for now just know that this is an incredible way to keep your bathroom cabinet stocked and that by using that link you are actively supporting this very channel with that let's go right into our first movie in 2014 famous youtubers Shane Dawson entered and then won a star's reality show entitled the chair the pitch of the show was that several contestants would enter with the chance of winning a seat as the director of their own dream movie with $800,000 as the budget emboldened by this Shane created not cool one of the most worthless things ever made by human hands when discussing his thoughts on making this masterpiece Dawson had this to say people are out of touch with what teenagers are interested in I wasn't making a movie from middle-aged people writing about TV everything you need to know about the film is told you 45 seconds in at this exact second we see a woman dancing at a Thanksgiving party she stops to take a selfie and we see her adding filters suddenly we see her post a photo of an entirely different woman with the text no filter this moment is trying to be blatant social commentary surely this woman despite being a little heavy should feel proud and happy in her own skin enough that she shouldn't be pressured by society to feed into the very system that makes her want to look different and yet at the same time it's still clearly a very mean-spirited joke at the expense of this one like ahaha this woman is fat and she's pretending she's not but what a fat idiot another example is that the movie has numerous scenes that feature characters calling each other [ __ ] and it's clearly played as if this is a bad thing that the writer is trying to draw negative attention to and yet at the same time numerous other scenes feature characters actively being called that word as part of a joke it Shane Dawson actually daring to say society is messed up for doing X thing now watch me do X thing for the sake of seeming challenging is cruelty of malicious tool used by society to belittle those who are already broken or is it this super cool thing that Shane Dawson discovered that he gets to use indefinitely because page shut up great like a rhino who's been shot with a tranquilizer gun should Tory be seen as a good person despite laughing at people being tasered and mocking her peers by sharing embarrassing images of them on social media or is it super sad that someone called her a mean nickname in high school and posted a sad photo of her at the prom the answer when the movie tells you a character is bad they're bad when they tell you their character is good they're good no matter how they act no matter what they do that's the standard it's basically narcissism the movie here's a fun fact there are three scenes in the movie that predominantly feature people of color the first feature is a very stereotypical gay best friend character who has very little screen time and I almost forgot about the second is a running gag about a homeless man who is so depraved that he eats and drinks his own [ __ ] and piss the third features a man who flashes the audience by writing his uncensored penis against a plate of glass I think the New York Times put it best when they said of Dawsons creation not cool is an attempt at a raunchy comedy that is so poorly executed and so unfunny that no one involved with it should ever be allowed to work in the movies again there is one silver lining to the movie and that's the story line featuring drew Monson Drew's character has spent the last year of his life as a freshman in college but he returns home to conquest his highschool crush who is a year younger than him and is thus still in high school which is sort of creepy drew gets told over and over again first by his friends and then directly by the woman herself that she has no interest in him whatsoever and is not attracted to him in the slightest and despite this he continues to try and win her over by basically buying his way into bed with her and for a brief moment it seems like this is going to work out which would have been very stupid a lot of guys have this idea in their head that if they're nice to a woman that will end with the woman sleeping with them and because of this they only showed basic respect to the opposite gender if sex is on the table and telling guys that they can overturn a blatant and respectful rejection of Attraction just by being nice is kind of super stupid instead the storyline ends with him accepting that being friends with her without anything else is a totally natural thing that he should never have been opposed to in the first place and I think it's a really big moment for the film that might have had a positive influence on a lot of the people that saw it then Shane Dawson gets raped and it's played mostly for Laughs Shane's story is that his hyper sexual girlfriend breaks up with him because he's becoming a boring loser despite being popular in high school and after running into a girl he used to bully they hook up then he realizes that he might have feelings which is a problem because she hates everything and especially him there's some crap about them going on some sort of list of things to do and he wants to go on a road trip to do more but she says that he was supposed to learn to go love college in New York or something go somewhere awesome you know like Kentucky and then two people tell them both that they're both being jerks and then he gets assaulted but she blames him and he shows her he cares by shaving his head which is a big thing because he likes his hair that's the movie I mentioned that not cool is fascinating to me and it's not just because it's bad but also because it's a relic of the past you see Shane Dawson is one of the internet personalities who has changed the most over his several years on the Internet it used to be that he would try to be very raunchy and very off-color in order to get attention from the sorts of people that liked that kind of stuff and over the years he's changed a lot and has become an entirely different person in terms of what he tries to put into his content but despite this he's still most infamous today were saying insane reactionary stuff in interviews in the past and then having to come out in the present and clarify that he was just making a mockery of himself one of the biggest messages in the film is that we need to learn to let the past go and move on into the future and if you're with one foot in the past Wow you're missing a [ __ ] foot so I say let us move away from the Shane Dawson who said things that weren't true about himself for the sake of being shocking and let's instead take a step towards the modern Shane Dawson who says things that aren't true about other people for the sake of sensationalism and minimalize --is mental health issues for petty drama documentaries on to the next movie in previous videos I took the time to watch an interview with you - Bret originals the thinning and the thinning new world order - films which switch back and forth from being hilariously over-the-top - boringly boring in a very boring sort of boring way that bores me in those videos I had been very critical of the very existence of exclusive content on the read program and taking that position seemed like it was paying off pretty well for me so I decided that for this video I could follow up by watching and making fun of the other film that the site pushed harder than anything else smosh's ghost mates now when I said that I was going to be making this video I had a lot of people ask me to review smosh's other movie and I had some people who asked me to review both movies but very few people asked me just for this one and this surprised me but now that I've actually gotten the chance to watch it I think I do understand smosh's first movie is a gorgeous egotistical mess it has a plot that makes no sense it's stocked with pointless cameos and numerous embarrassing scenes with no weight and generally it just reeks of either corporate intervention or overzealous comedians not being sure what makes a good movie and ghost mates Smosh a second movie is pretty okay yeah I don't actually hate this one and in a way that's sort of frustrating because life would be so easy for me right now if this movie was just unbearably bad and has scenes which are just as terrible as you'd expect moments which mimic pretty strongly smosh's least proud or noteworthy sketches and those moments also happen to be all the ones that they put in the trailer but there's also a lot of subdued moments of comedy that I actually sort of really liked now the plot of the movie sounds pretty silly out loud so I feel like we can all kick back for a moment and just make fun of that Ian's character is getting ready to propose to his girlfriend of several years but when he does that it turns out that he's not asking her to marry him but to move in with him eventually and she gets angry and storms out and as she does he gets his tie stuck in the door accidentally turns porn on and his pants fall down leading everyone to presume that he died of auto-erotic asphyxiation gone wrong so he chokes himself while he chokes himself I know you're not sold but I promise you the rest of the plot will also not sell you on the movie Anthony's character moves in since the house becomes so cheap and soon discovers that his roommate is a ghost in presumes that the afterlife is just ghosts wandering around forever but after t-pain dies he sees a brief vision of heaven and realizes that in order to ascend into the afterlife he must finish dealing with what was close to his chest when he passed heaven is real I saw 20 payne died but t-pain's dead focus dude and so they end up going around to all the people that Ian's wronged in his life starting with a teacher Ian gave a nickname that was so devastating that he lost all self-esteem and the respect of his students this is a running joke where anthony's character is supposed to be like a chapo traphouse poster and is constantly going on weird rants that Ian just doesn't know how to respond to he goes around he's always sad his whole family is just struggling to eat constantly they can't pay for it right eventually the two were able to check off every person except for Ian's ex and Ian solution for how to deal with her is to convince Anthony to go get his ex to fall for him only Anthony sort of creeps Ian's ex out because he's hanging around in her dead boyfriend's house with all of his stuff and his wearing his clothes in Anthony's sort of has a lot more chemistry with this other girl but Ian keeps pushing it because he's sort of a gigantic [ __ ] and an idiot and eventually he possesses Anthony which results in Anthony having a meltdown and crapping his pants I warned you the plot would not sell you on the film the plot does not make you want to see it as I'm reading all this out most of you probably can think of about 10 other movies that have done this exact same concept a million times better and you can also probably guess the ending because it's pretty consistent to that standard so if on paper it's a really uninteresting film then why did I like it / have a strong lack of hatred for it maybe it's particularly that I grew up on Smosh and have a sort of nostalgic attachment to the chemistry that Ian and Anthony bring to the screen and they do manage to be pretty funny in the movie I was surprised how many moments just really made me lose it completely I sort of don't know if everyone will feel the same way about it or if it's just a mood I had ghost mates probably isn't something to write home about but if you have nothing to do for a couple hours and you already have YouTube bread I think it's not undeserving of your views I don't know it's a pass in my books and with that let's move on to our final film did I say no Channel awesome movies sorry it must have slipped my mind so a little over a year ago I released the third episode of Fallen Titans which surrounded the great controversy and Fiasco surrounding the former creator Network that guy with the glasses comm known today as a channel awesome I'll admit some time later I have mixed feelings about that video it's how a lot of people found me and I feel I did a pretty good job of covering a lot of it without showing too much blatant bias but I think that in having to dedicate so much of that video to covering the drama and the downfall of the site I missed the shot to highlight the small creators who got their start there I would easily make the case that people like fails have directly inspired the sort of comedy that I have strived to bring across in this series and the informative tone of people like Todd and the shadows is also easily something that I've tried to carry across I mean realistically what is fallen Titans other than a cheap bootleg knockoff of one-hit wonder land film brain taught me how bad sequels could be Brad Jones showed me things that I really wanted to unsee obscurest Lupus showed me the wonders of media lost from the stream and the blockbuster buster he was the underdog but at all these creators the most unique was almost certainly Lewis loved hog aka Linkara Linkara was the showrunner of atop the forth wall where bad comics burn he usually based his love for franchises on their attention to detail and continuity with his series the history of Power Rangers almost sizing the Easter eggs the show carried from one season to the next because of this it's no real shock that he attempted to create a similar tone with his own show atop of the 4th wall was particularly fun because of the many episodes featuring actual storylines which would tie into the reviews think of filthy Frank's use of characters like chin chin and pink guy there was a standalone point to each and every video but if you were diligent enough you could also figure out a story that was going on throughout the whole series although obviously Joe G accomplished this with a much more successful tone that made the idea seemed a lot more self-aware I have very mixed feelings about atop the fourth wall these days it's very cliche a little embarrassing and really bad in an undeniable way but in another sense it's a show made by a geek on absolutely no money where he managed to make storylines interesting enough to garner a lot of positive attention and I'm not sure that's something that anyone could do Lewis didn't have to introduce an evil robot version of himself from another universe being possessed by an evil version of Tom servo who he would have fistfights with which would change the shading his walls they didn't need to introduce the idea of him having a giant spaceship or a city sized robot or a cast of best friends who were all just him putting on different silly voices while still being expected to be taken seriously in most scenes he really really really did not need to do these things all anyone ever asked him to do was sit on a green couch and read comics out loud so we didn't have to buy them though that's that was his job but he dreamed bigger and we gonna laugh about him behind his back for this but if he hadn't done this I wouldn't be talking about him 10 years later I wouldn't even be thinking about him he'll in the past I've made complete videos playing full Oma's to the low-budget insanity that he often put into his work and I think I was drawn to do this partially because there's some weird magic to that kind of material that's hard to replicate case in point atop the fourth wall the movie I was always going to review this one but considering how obscure it is I was shocked by the amount of people who ended up suggesting it specifically Nolan from the pizza party podcast offered to come on board and help me look at it a generous offer which I of course chose to accept I was however shocked to discover that Nolan doesn't just like this movie moreover he sort of obsessed with it to the point that he considers it to be one of his favorite movies to watch of all time when he first described it to me to try and sell it he said that it was so bad that it was good in a way very similar to the room but now that I've seen it that's not exactly the comparison I would go for I think atop the fourth wall the movie is most like threat level midnight the entirely fictional movie Michael Scott made in the office an overzealous adventure film that tries too hard without the proper resources and becomes a comedy mostly by accident you know you were telling me earlier about how much better machines are how flesh sucks and steel rules but that's the thing isn't it you are an Android but me now granted atop the fourth wall the movie is already trying to be a comedy but it's funniest moments come when it's trying to be serious or deep or epic instead of from its actual humor the movie starts off with a scene which I think is the ultimate introduction to Lewis's obsession with overthinking the continuity in his show the sequence is set four years earlier in the timeline shortly after he first obtained his spaceship from one of his enemies and it features a representative from the government coming to telling Cara that he is now considered one of the greatest threats to national security on the entire planet many in the government want to assassinate the comic reviewer but this specific person wants to make a deal as long as he doesn't use his technology or powers to hinder with the governments of the world then he won't be seen as a threat don't use it for military affairs in a foreign country don't try to bring it down on us because a bill passed that you don't like and don't try to threaten us with it you stay out of our way we'll stay out of yours and if I refuse I'm going to start a war with the American government with my engines with my toys that work like real things and if you pass that copyright law destroy washington d.c this scene sets in stone a pretty consistent standard for the rest of the runtime a dedication to continuity in keeping with canon so strong that the writer forgets to actually invest into the actual plotline if you have not seemed to boldly flee then most of this movie will make absolutely no sense to you which in a way will make it seem even more aimless and easy to laugh at there are whole scenes with several then channel awesome reviewers sitting around and referencing their own videos but as those videos are now all old and out-of-date it comes across as a massive waste of the audience's time four years later in the current day Linkara is celebrating his birthday with his government agent pal and he goes home very drunk and falls asleep and as he does vivid flashbacks of his past storylines haunt his dreams reminding him of each and every fight every punch every bit of blood lost to a version of himself wearing a silly outfit he wakes up the next day and tries to record a review but finds that he can't feel motivated to anymore slumped into an extreme depression he begins to doubt if he even has reason to live you have a good life you have a family you have friends you have things that you enjoy that you're excited about yeah he has a family but all of his family is just like shitty puppets that is that the one characters this link are you have a family that's what he means I have puppets $65,000 meanwhile in space a group of explorers have built a new Space Station using the house spaceship technology from to boldly suck I mean fleet to boldly flee and they are going on an excavation to scavenge parts from the Death Star knock off that was also in that movie and blew up but the signal goes dead and no one in the government knows what has happened the next day Linkara and many of his reviewer friends are having a party where they're watching a movie each of them has brought to the table sadly as the movie explains Doug cannot join them because he is having a mental breakdown after re-watching the Garbage Pail Kids oh my god that Walker is so terrible why did anyone ever like I want to be in one of these movies I just don't want to have any dialogue that's my dream can you just imagine no just I'm in the group but I never say youth so you just want Nashes roles basically what you're telling yeah one meshes or I just want to be there and I never say anything I look unhappy and then I'm just there's all that be incredible I want to join you like I'm you're staring at them and then I'm off in the background even further so just you know sometimes you should like outside a window yeah suddenly the government agent arrives and informs them the government has really gotten themselves into trouble this time and that they need the help of the one group of people who have a chance of fixing all this can you imagine the president being like we've got a an issue of national security bring in the internet reviewers and so all of these video reviewers go on a secret mission for the American government into space and they all split into different groups to work on various parts of Linkara ship powers out in this Junction again I need to put in a nine-volt or something in this thing hang on man I got you we superimpose upon the screen eventually they were able to catch up to the missing Space Station only for it to turn on them and start attacking badly damaging their own ship I hot-boxed in the [ __ ] engine room dude as they take more and more damaged one of the control panels explodes and the government agent is killed Linkara heads off to launch a shuttle ship hoping to sacrifice himself so his friends can escape but just as he reaches the door a familiar voice has blasted over the comms it's his voice their foe is not just a ship gone rogue but mecha Cara who was resurrected during the meddling of the lost crew and his dead set on getting his revenge on Linkara and killing everyone he cares for shocked and horrified when car stands in place not able to react or move almost as if he's out of focus mecha car prepares to destroy the ship but finds that his weapons are out of power but as Lewis is still in shock Mars girl has to take command mecha car is gone for now but the crew is faced with bad news with the engines in bad shape following the attack it will take them 7 months to get back to earth and they don't have enough oxygen to make that trip they elect to stop by Europa Jupiter's moon and an essential location in to boldly flee there they will restock fix their engines and get back to earth as they make this trip the tone of the film makes a sudden and pretty strange transition as the seriousness of the story begins to bear down on each character one by one we almost died today I'm not okay with that no one is not really anyway no one truly wants to die I think that people just want that pain of that fear or whatever it is just stop you wouldn't God what Quentin why do you believe in God if you haven't figured out yet link Aras character arc is that as a direct result of all the hell that he's seen in all of his different review storylines he is suffering from PTSD when the two of them are alone on the bridge Mars girl confronts him about his inability to act in the face of danger screaming that he froze and that she's never seen him do that before enraged to be confronted like this Linkara screams that she has no idea what it's been like going through his life for the past several years you guys haven't seen anything I'm the expert here oh so this is an ego thing you think you're better than us no of course I don't but I know how dangerous it is you guys don't you you don't know what it is to fight something that truly truly wants you dead yep you guys have never stared into the face of an angry god as it laughs at how small you are and then you stare right back at it and make it blink I love this I love this part every time it just makes it all worth it there's also this additional element to a bunch of these scenes where they often that feature characters who become representatives of people who don't like Linkara show and they end up criticizing the world around them while also in another blatant way criticizing the content that he puts out who are critics we review things we should be critiquing plot lines not being part of them because it's weird and I didn't want it and it's like everything is being interrupted for the sake of this but the weird thing is that instead of addressing these points the characters in the movie then end up slipping back into discussing everything from an in-universe point of view which sort of defeats the purpose of introducing that element to begin with but why have you not left yet that the scoutship stands ready you can enter involved in this a bit no one will think you love you for it because my friends are in trouble and they need my help one of the weirdest points and all this is where loop ends up talking to 90's kid asks him about the fact that he's a one-note character with one joke that's not really that endearing and this causes him to act sort of smug and talk more about how great the 90s war just in sort of a more actualized perspective I think sure they beat ideas into the ground sure everything was extreme and violent but it was different it was new I would like what if 90's kid got really woke he starts talking about all the things that were wrong with the 90s like let's talk about the marginalization of the LGBTQ community the AIDS epidemic was easily preventable yet the government did nothing however the biggest reveal the movie came a little bit earlier when we found out that Linkara being an all-powerful figure with incredible abilities and space technology centuries ahead of his own world can't find the passion to keep making fun of Rob Liefeld comics every week eventually the cast is able to reach Europa and begins looking for supplies the moon of Jupiter looks a lot like some random building that they rent it out and filled with empty boxes yes this is where the very forgettable bad guys of to boldly flee were preparing and packaging their weapons which includes things like a gun that shoots chainsaws and a gun that shoots bees and a bunch of other ridiculous stuff the cast also finds out that Europa has developed a field which heals whoever is in it caused by being very close to the plot hole in the earlier movie by the way this is a good time to tell you that this movie had a budget of over $60,000 and I feel sort of confused on where all of that went considering that there is pretty much nothing in the movie that looks like a huge amount of money went into it they have one set that looks pretty good but other than that there's a lot of cheap green-screen the makeup is bad the set of the space station is clearly someone's basement the set of this bar is definitely Doug Walker's basement also and I realize that this probably isn't an issue of budget but pretty much every basic rule of filmmaking is broken almost immediately in this the rule of 180 shattered like a screen door the rule of thirds constantly ignored but somehow wood annoys me the most is the numerous shots that look like this where there's this big space at the edge of the screen that is left for no reason while the person on the left of the shot isn't even in frame all the way how could no one have fixed this it would have taken two seconds as mecha Cara reaches the planet Linkara has the others teleport back to the ship so he can fight him off mecha Cara knocks link into some boxes and figures out that the planet is healing him but prepares to teleport him away - kill him somewhere else are there any final words before I properly delete them from my memory bees now freeze back in space the squad reviewers are able to blow up the other ship and teleports the crew over to save them could they really not have done that the entire time alone when car talks to himself and realizes that he loves reviewing comics and blah blah blah poor jack without the music moving on mecha car rips the rest of his skin off his head meaning that we finally get to see what he looks like under the skin spoilers he's just like a skull thing the crew teleports the dead guy onto the moon and they all sort of stare at him for a while eventually he's fine because of the healing field soon everyone teleports down to the planet and the crew of reviewers assemble a scene so epic that it rivals in the feats end game without even trying this is exactly like something I would write in high school yes in high school this is like recess into the fourth grade two kids playing and someone's the animated assembly over it that's like that's what this is yeah make-believe on the playground like I'm pretty sure they didn't even storyboard this which probably was necessary then Linkara has all of his friends band together literally as his magic gun is able to absorb powers from their spirits and it makes a big charge that fires a mecha Cara misses and then sort of bends back around and hits him in the back this terrible man $60,000 why is that another layer why does he have two layers of skull I told you I told you it was a masterpiece Quinta what's the verdict Quentin when I feel everything and nothing I have a lot I could say I love it I love it so much has there ever been a better movie no this is genuinely I don't believe sappy yeah it honestly like there's just so much you can like gleam about Louis as a person from this movie I think he just honestly has a an ego to him that's not not like Doug levels where he he thinks he's a [ __ ] genius but like he wants people to like him a lot and think he is writing something really deep and profound but it's it's it feels a lot more genuine where he has dug it feels like he wants people to think he's smart and clever Louis wants to make something smart and clever it's more like he wants to create something meaningful whereas Doug wants people to think he is meaningful yeah like I [ __ ] on this movie hard but like I love it genuinely I I love that even if it was horribly mismanaged to the point where it does not look like it was $60,000 worth like he still tried I think yeah an extent to his knowledge and that's that's my hot take on the matter I know him yeah do you believe in God Quentin why did you freeze right there when you were saying that I've never seen you freeze like that before you haven't seen what I've seen what have you ever seen a man just just in your backyard belt apply five million times Nolan you've never seen that have you ever had a man he shows up in your house and you kill him and he comes back right away but now he's a robot can't say I have truth be told though who's how have you ever had thousands of spaceships appear over your house and ready to kill you in an instant and you have to go outside and glare at them until they all blow up are you referencing actual inkaar of things now because I can't tell no these are all my videos all of these things happen in my videos have you ever lived that okay well I can't say I have do you know how hard it is to sell your house when there are five million identical corpses a man went in my backyard and multiplied five million times and then you froze do you believe in God I believe in God and I and I believe God is you because you are so epic and cool and you did all these amazing things that are so much better than anybody else's you've helped me you know I want to know I'm gonna do fallen Titans again because of you know and you've made me want to do full-on Titans again I was gonna stop but you inspired me to keep going thank you
