the Atari Lynx was a remarkable handheld System created by epics and sold by Atari starting in 1989. it had a backlit color screen an 8-bit CPU with 16-bit Graphics four channels sound and scaling built into the hardware you could also connect up to eight systems for multiplayer action in some games a second iteration of the lynx had a slightly smaller design and stereo audio there were 71 commercially released games from 1989 to 1995 and I thought it was time to review every one of them after all who's better to review this Library than someone like me who's played most of them extensively and beaten several of them anyway let's get started with a game of APB this is the only Home console release of the Atari games arcade game as officer Bob you drive around and hit your siren to bust law Breakers and criminals a voice and the graphics and sounds are really spot on it plays great and makes me hanker for a donut a grade awesome golf this is this is a golf game that really lives up to the name you can select from three different courses with 18 holes each it has some nice options and you have multiple characters to choose from but they all play the same swinging the club is intuitive and the scaling Graphics are amazing a grade baseball Heroes I really wanted to like this baseball game because it has large characters and several different views of the field and this might have been okay if swinging the bat wasn't so slow I just can't get the timing down also the multiple views makes it difficult to catch the ball f grade basketball for this game I got the impression that Atari was trying to make a grittier version of arch Rivals Basketball seems to be more focused on the brawling and less on the basketball also the ball physics just seem a little Jinky this game has some interesting Graphics but I didn't find it very fun D grade [Music] Batman Returns based on the Tim Burton movie you play as Batman beating up enemies a lot of enemies and all of them were the weapons and they're all after you it's hard to progress in this game and jumping past the enemies is really the only way to get anywhere good graphics and sounds but it's not really much fun D grade also duck behind the mailbox game sack Dave battle Wheels this is a first person vehicle combat game drive around in your car stacked with weapons to blow up enemy cars if your car gets wrecked you can jump out and keep fighting the graphics sounds and gameplay are just amazing a grade Battle Zone 2000 an update of the original Atari arcade game where you blast enemy tanks but hold on there's a secret game that's incredibly deep and a bit overwhelming this secret game has over 350 stages multiple weapons several customizable tanks in 3D Graphics this is an amazing game be great Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure based on the 1989 movie this game has you play as Bill and Ted on a quest to collect musical notes in different time periods it has some cool graphics but the sounds and gameplay are lacking unless I'm missing something you're just gonna die a lot C grade blockout this is a 3D version of Tetris you drop pieces down a pit and try to make them fill out the rows the graphics are definitely interesting but it can be tricky to get that piece exactly where you want it the sounds are minimal but overall it's not bad be great blue Lightning take on the role of a jet fighter set on missions to destroy other Jets ground targets and ships this is one of the Showcase games for the links thanks to its amazing Graphics the control is great and the sounds are pretty good too much deeper than that other jet fighter game a grade California games and for the links included four events surfing BMX half pipe and foot bag half pipe is terrible because the controls make no sense footbag is okay but it's kind of boring however surfing and BMX are great and they'll get most of my attention I love the game's graphics and music B grade Checkered Flag a Formula One racing game similar to Pole Position however the game has many more options and tracks to choose from it also has some cool scaling graphics and I like the functioning side view mirrors one of my favorite F1 racing games be great chips challenge this is a puzzle game where you must collect all the chips in the stage and find the exit some chips can only be accessed if you have the correct power up ice shoes to get past icy floors for example there's also enemies that will get in your way a great game a grade crystal mines too this is more of an action-oriented version of Boulderdash you play as a robot sent into a mine to collect crystals and gems of course there are monsters and other hazards to avoid but fortunately your robot has a blaster to protect himself the graphics and the music aren't the best but it plays pretty well be great desert strike the classic EA helicopter game appears on the links you fly around in an isometric view taking out enemy buildings planes tanks and soldiers Graphics are a little bit Bland and the controls take some time to get used to it's also a little slow overall but it's pretty good B grade Dino Olympics an action puzzle game where you guide a tribe of humans to the end of a stage each human can do different tests like throwing Spears holding up other humans and jumping over gaps and such the graphics are nice with Parallax backgrounds B grade dirty Larry Renegade cop this is a side-scrolling action game where you play as a cop with a gun the graphics are extremely detailed but the gameplay is a little iffy I end up running into my enemies before I can even shoot them also enemies take way too many hits C grade foreign [Music] a port of the taito arcade brawling game the graphics are very close to the original game but the problem is that it's very zoomed in on the action this makes it more challenging to get any distance from your enemies also the animation is a bit choppy but I did figure out how to do that elbow smash C grade [Music] Dracula the undead a point-and-click Style Adventure game where you help Jonathan Hawker escape from Dracula's castle the graphics are presented in Scipio tones to evoke the Classic Movies I'm not a fan of this style of game but you might enjoy it if that's your thing C grade thank you Electro cop This was meant as a follow-up to impossible mission where you must infiltrate and stop an evil Corporation this game makes great use of the lynx's scaling feature and it looks great the music is peppy and it's not too repetitive this is one that I actually beat back in the day be great European soccer challenge why are there always two soccer games on Atari systems anyway this game has some very detailed Graphics I like how the field uses line scrolling to give it a sense of depth I did find the controls to be a little confusing and it makes for a less than fun experience C grade Fidelity ultimate chess challenge I like that this chess game has a 3D style mode but really it's not practical especially when your pieces are obscured however the 2D mode is fine and a preferable way to play there's no music and the controls feel a bit sluggish but it's decent enough C grade the gates of zindicon a side-scrolling shooter with 51 stages along the way you gain special weapons like lasers bombs and drones I've always liked the diversity in the graphics enemies and stages there's a lot of them and this is one game that I played to the end B grade Gauntlet the third encounter this was not originally developed as a gauntlet game which is why it seems so different from the others you battle your way through dozens of Mazes Gathering spells gold and keys this is a fun game with some good graphics and sound be great Gordo 106 a late release this one sees you play as an escape lab monkey trying to free other animals from a lab while avoiding the scientists this is a good premise for a game and it's got some neat Parallax scrolling but air grading music and choppy scrolling C grade [Music] hard driving a home conversion of atari's popular 3D driving simulator and while it's a little slow I'm really surprised at how well this plays it includes the speed and stunt tracks and the controls are okay but they can be a little touchy sound mostly consists of your engine running B grade [Music] hockey this is a decent arcade style hockey game the characters are tiny which is fine but why is the rink blue instead of white also what I like about these games are the screens of the Face-Off and fighting although I did find the fighting completely unfair and impossible B grade oh Hydra and Atari games arcade game where you pilot a boat style hovercraft that can fly you have stolen a secret object and must get it to the end of the stage if you crash your cargo will go flying out and be captured by the enemy block boat great graphics and sounds a grade ishido the way of the stones a tile matching puzzle game that reminds me of Othello combined with dominoes you can play similar colors or shapes next to one another but they can't be touching dissimilar tiles this requires too much of my PewDie brain power D grade Jimmy Connors tennis a nice tennis game with decent graphics and sounds but with amazingly clear voice the controls are good once you get used to them and I like how a Target appears on the ground where you should stand I actually beat this one back in the day be great joust the arcade classic where you ride on the back of an ostrich and bounce on top of enemies to defeat them the sounds and Graphics are faithful to the arcade but the animation is somewhat choppy for the era I think this is the best portable version of joust B grade class it's the 2020s and there is still time for clax the best Home Port of this arcade puzzle game for any console by far the graphics and sounds are simply amazing all you have to do is match up three four or five tiles horizontally vertically or diagonally it's harder than it sounds and it's great fun a grade [Music] Kung food I beat him up where you fight mutated food in your house did I mention you're mutated too I think the graphics in this game are pretty nice and it controls well enough the music and sounds are repetitive and the enemies lack any kind of AI this could have been better C grade lemmings the classic computer game where you give brainless Lemmings special powers to help them get to the exit this is a fairly good conversion but it does seem a bit sluggish [Music] the graphics and sounds are faithful to the original and the control is good be great links Casino hey look a slot machine game that includes several other casino games like video poker Blackjack craps and roulette all joking aside I do prefer slots in blackjack in most casino games but this one is kind of cool because it allows you to wander the floor and talk to people like Elvis C grade Malibu bikini volleyball a beach volleyball game that's quite good it's graphics and sounds and you can choose your music but personally I prefer silence the control is good and the icon on the ground shows you where to stand serving can be a little tricky though B grade Ms Pac-Man a home conversion of the arcade Classic this version definitely sounds like Miss Pac-Man but the entire maze is shown which makes the characters really tiny the good news is that it still plays like Miss Pac-Man just a bit slower than what I'm used to be great NFL football this is a game that I really hoped would be good the graphics are nice and clean and there's some minor scaling on the field it also has some nice clear voice samples but the issue I have is how hard it is to pass the ball it appears that you manually have to aim while passing wow f grade for being virtually unplayable Ninja Gaiden based on the Tecmo arcade game this is a fairly fun beat em up the graphics are faithful to the arcade just shrunk down the music is a little bit grating on my ears and some of the sound effects are odd but overall it's a pretty fun game and the only home conversion of the arcade original be great [Music] Ninja Gaiden 3 the ancient ship of Doom a portable version of the NES game where you play as a ninja slashing enemies I was surprised when this game appeared but from what I can tell this version looks sounds and plays similarly to the original it's pretty fun just shrunk down be great pack land remember the Pac-Man cartoon this arcade game conversion is based on that and it's pretty good for an early platformer your goal is to get the fairy home and then return home yourself it has colorful graphics and fanciful music I really like The Parallax scrolling backgrounds too B grade Paperboy this Atari games classic is the best of the home portable ports of the day just ride your bike down the road throwing papers at houses and obstacles the graphics are spot on and the music is pretty good the scrolling is nice and the control is also good be great pinball Jam the lone pinball game on the lynx has two really great tables Elvira and the party monsters and police force [Music] have great graphics and gameplay the physics are just about right not perfect and the scrolling of the table is smooth I just wish the ball was a little bit more detailed be great [Music] pit fighter believe it or not this was a hit arcade game before Mortal Kombat was released this version is somewhat faithful to that game and the graphics sounds and terrible controls Department really all you have to do is Mash buttons randomly as you battle your opponent in a No Holds Barred match d-grade power factor an action adventure game where you recreate red Aces historical event of defeating the evil sin Lindo Tech mods yeah I had to look that up this game has some really good graphics and I want to like it but it just seems unfair when everything is constantly attacking you but it just seems unfair when everything is constantly attacking you C grade kicks the classic computer game that has somehow appeared on every system imaginable is it really that popular anyway you just need to draw lines to create boxes to claim most of the screen while avoiding enemies this is a good version of kicks with some good graphics that fill in the boxes B grade Rampage the classic arcade game from Midway that includes a new fourth character for four player games Larry the lab rat this game was originally called Monster demolition before they acquired the Rampage license which is why this version feels a little bit different than the others otherwise it's a good conversion a grade Rampart the Atari games action hybrid game where you defend your castle and then rebuild it with Tetris light bases this is probably the best home version of rampart the graphics sounds gameplay and even voice are spot on there's even cut scenes not found anywhere else a grade wow [Music] Road blasters yet another perfect conversion of an Atari games arcade classic drive your car as fast as possible shooting enemy cars collecting fuel pods and weapons and avoiding road hazards the graphics are smooth and fast and it even sounds just like the arcade a grade Robo squash a 3D version of breakout actually this game kind of reminds me of super glove ball for the NES it's an interesting concept for a game and I understand that in two-player mode each player sees the game from their side Graphics are kind of bland but I give it points for the concept C grade [Music] Robotron 2084 the classic arcade game that never works properly without dual joysticks the only good control scheme is a where you lock in your firing Direction the others have you ridiculously rotating it with buttons otherwise this is a good game be great rygar this is a side-scrolling action game based on the Tecmo arcade game you have a weapon that shoots out then returns but it doesn't swing around like in the original game the gameplay and music are repetitive but the graphics are nice with Parallax backgrounds C grade [Music] stun Runner based on the 3D polygon racer from Atari games this is a showpiece for the links it's a tube racer where you shoot enemies and avoid obstacles to reach the finish line the sounds are spot onto the arcade and it has so much voice Graphics took a little bit of a hit because they're not polygons but that really doesn't hurt the Gameplay at all hey great scrapyard dog this is a side scrolling platform game where you play as Louis who is off to rescue his dog scraps you can throw cans to attack enemies which is kind of weird also you need to get a shield right away or it's one hit and you're dead this has good graphics sound controls and gameplay be great foreign a port of the popular computer game this one has incredibly detailed Graphics the music control and gameplay are okay basically what you do is travel from left to right punching enemies I mean I'm sure there's more to it but that's as far as I've ever gotten before I die this would be a c if it weren't for the amazing Graphics be great Shanghai [Music] originally created by Activision in 1986 Shanghai appeared on practically every computer system all you do is select two identical mahjong tiles for removal the catches they can't be blocked by other tiles I spent way too much time on this one so my score may be a little biased a grade slime world you're Todd and you have come to slime world for some reason use your water gun to blast enemies and escape to your ship without getting covered in slime the graphics make good use of the lynx's scaling to undulate and morph the control and the sound are good and this one allows for eight players b grade steel talons based on the Atari games 3D polygon helicopter simulator game the lynx does a good job replicating the original's look it's a little sluggish but not bad the gameplay is much better than I thought it would be and it's actually kind of fun be great super asteroids and Missile Command it's two updated Atari classics on one Lynx card both play similar to the originals but include more weapons and power-ups asteroids is fun but it's really Missile Command that shines here with all the cool power-ups a grade super off-road Port of the Leland classic arcade game where you race trucks from an overhead perspective you can find or buy power-ups to get the advantage over your opponents the graphics are great and the sounds and the music are good I really wanted to like this game but the controls unfortunately are atrocious C grade super squeak an action puzzle game where you must touch every tile to change its color thankfully you can shoot the enemies that try to kill you to make it easier this one has some nice colorful graphics and good music in between stages B grade [Music] switchblade 2. this is a side-scrolling run and Gun that reminds me a bit of Shinobi it's only ever appeared on the Amiga and Atari SD computers the foreground Graphics look good but there's a lot of gaps in enemy placement I kind of like this game despite the slow pace B grade Toki a port of the Fab Tech arcade game where you play as a man transformed into a monkey that spits on enemies while on a quest to rescue your girlfriend [Music] the graphics are very colorful and detailed and the music and the controls are great this is a challenging game that I find very fun a grade tournament cyber ball 2072 a port of Atari games is futuristic football game has you playing as a team of robots matched up against another team of robots the graphics are good and look just like the arcade but it's really the intuitive controls that make it fun B grade [Music] turbo sub a first person perspective game where you pilot a flying submarine to repel alien attackers the graphics look good but the gameplay is severely lacking the enemies just randomly appear and you shoot them going underwater is kind of cool though this is one game that's so easy I beat it on my first try back in the day C grade liking child a port of these side scrolling computer game where you slowly travel the countryside as Brian attacking enemies to gain entrance to Valhalla the graphics are detailed and character animation is good but I found this one very dull C grade warbirds a World War One flying simulator where your only goal is to shoot down Enemy by wings ground-based polygon Graphics you can look around in any direction to find your enemy which is necessary since you don't have a radar this game gets a lot of Praise but I only found it fun for a few minutes be great world-class soccer another soccer game for the lynx and it's a terrible one at that the graphics are extremely Bland and the sounds mostly consist of you kicking the ball the controls aren't great either but what hurts this game the most are the incredibly choppy scrolling and animation it's just awful f grade xenophobe the best Home Port of the classic Midway Arcade game this actually goes beyond the original by adding new characters and rooms in the game it's your job to clean the alien infestation by blasting them with lasers and bombs a great game all around and it's also multiplayer a grade zybots an incredible Port of the Atari games arcade game this is basically doom on the links where you roam around a pseudo 3D maze blasting robotic enemies the graphics and sounds are absolutely spot on and it doesn't take long to get used to the controls a grade zarlar mercenary a top-down shooter where you play as a mercenary blasting everything for money I always choose Landrieu who starts off with power shots the graphics are very detailed and it's especially cool how much of it is destructible so many on-screen enemies make it tough but I love it and it's another one that I beat back in the day B grade [Music] okay well there you have it every game released commercially during the Atari lynx's lifespan now there are more games that were released afterwards such as cyber virus Loops crazy Ace mini golf and others that I might cover in a future video also there's lots of Homebrew games that have been made for this system and if you'd like to see a future video about those other Lynx games let me know down in the comments until then thank you for watching and we'll see you next time bye bye
