hey there everybody i just watched the new peter jackson beatles documentary get back and i just finished the third episode and i want to give a review of it before my initial reaction wore off and i gave you like a right out of the box how i really felt about the film stay tuned [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i have been a beatles fan for 47 years since the age of eight eight or nine since 1974 and i'm a huge beatles fan i mean i am just well i used to be obsessed with the beatles when i was a kid major beetle fanatic knew everything about the beatles knew their height and their weight and what they ate and where they lived and you know how often they took a crap and things like that so i've been a major beatles fan for most of my life um if you're a musician if you've been in a band like me if you've written songs you know how hard it is you know how you get stuck and you work with egos i think you're going to see a new side to a band that may have inspired you to pick up the guitar like like th this band has inspired me it's it's because i the beatles are why i have all this equipment the beetles are why i have all the guitars and amplifiers and i've written 150 songs the beatles are why i write books and make movies and do photography they've inspired me and the beatles have saved me and they they have kept me going throughout the years they have been my um my sanctuary for many years as i've gotten older i've become less fond of some of their songs and less fond of them as individuals because i found out you know that they're not the fuzzy mop tops that we all thought they were the myth the beatles for me has worn off over the years so for me to see this film i was very skeptical about this film and i really didn't want to see it i wasn't going to spend my time and my money on it i wasn't going to subscribe to disney i was very pessimistic about the new film because all the trailers i saw said that the film was kind of like the sunny side of the beatles it was just a bunch of four you know a bunch of guys having fun in the studio you know and they're all out there just gonna show the opposite of what the original let it be film was which was kind of a very dark production and uh i was very pessimistic going into this film thinking oh i'm gonna see just some type of i don't know just something with an agenda pushing it as if the beatles were just nice guys again the fuzzy mop tops having fun in the studio making songs and i didn't want to see this film i didn't want to watch it but i had a feeling i should see it i got a feeling i had a feeling i should see this movie oh yeah and if you've seen the film you know why that song's funny because uh they play it over and over and over again one thing that i noticed about this film that i thought was fascinating is that these four guys the four beatles went into a studio and the whole premise was that they were supposed to go into a studio the camera crew was supposed to document them writing four songs for a brand new show and they were going to write like 12 to 14 brand new songs in like two weeks two and a half weeks and i thought that was fascinating because i've written songs and some of my songs have taken years to write some mighty songs i can knock off everything knocked off in like a day so this is fascinating if they actually under pressure in front of the cameras under the lights with a deadline to meet they actually knocked off for by about seven songs they didn't come quite come up with 12. the only one song that they really didn't write in front of the cameras was um one after 909 that song was written years before it was written recorded um and i think it was during a recording sessions in 1963 or 64. that song was already in the can and it's already ready to go so that one if you're not a beatles fan you don't know that song was written years before this film was ever made the other thing about this film that i really was excited about i think what you're seeing here is the first reality tv show ever because it's just like reality tv show the the beatles it's just like one of those fixer-upper shows where they have an old house that they've got to turn around in two weeks and get the people to like it and move into it even though they had to tear out a wall and put in new windows or it's just like below deck a tv show with the people on that on the yacht or it's just like any of those shows you know the beatles were in front of the cameras under the hot lights in front of all the management and the producer and the director of the film they had to perform and perform and make songs and then perform them live so i think inadvertently i think the beatles created the first ever reality tv show really i mean get back the peter jackson version anyway is the first ever reality tv show and i think the beatles were pioneers in that matter they they would do things that are way ahead of their time i mean think about it this really was a reality tv show and um i don't know if that was their intention but it's pretty interesting that now almost every other tv show on tv is a reality tv show show moonshiners below deck new jersey housewives it's the same thing allegedly you've got a camera crew documenting the lives of these people going about their day trying to make ends meet and that's what it turned out to be or you know it's just that's just what let it be was let it be it's just a camera crew following a bunch of guys around who are trying to write songs and make it make them good enough so they could put them on an album and do a live show with them so that's pretty the beatles first reality tv show the first you heard it here first on skating bear studios but i got my wife to watch this with me as well she watched all three parts with me and she's not a beatles fan at all when we first saw episode one when i first saw episode one my heart sank i was like what the hell's going on here i felt so like frustrated after the first two and a half hours um the beetle seemed disjointed they seemed unhappy they seemed like miserable men paul um seemed to be running the show he was just like come on lads let's let's get going let's go on to the next song let's try to come up with something we've gotta we gotta make this film we're gonna do this concert and they they seem disorganized and disheveled and they seemed you know you know i didn't know this is the way they were you know this is this is pretty much how they appeared on film especially in the first the first part of the three-part series and john lennon in the first two first whole part of the series of for of one of three it's broken up into three parts there's three like two and a half hour parts of this film and in the first part and half of the second part john seems stoned out of his mind i'm pretty sure he was gone he was he was blitzed he was in another universe i have no idea if he even if he was alive today if he could even tell you what the first week of making that film was all about he looked gone to me blitz baked whatever you want to call it and i was really like wow you know john looks blitzed paul's running the show he's trying to keep everybody interested in this project and george is unhappy and at the end of the first segment george gets pissed off because nobody's listening to him he's got ideas and paul keeps telling him how to play things paul keeps like you know why don't you play like this play it like this play your guitar like this do it like this paul keeps trying to be the the manager of the band and the arranger of everything and george gets pissed off and he walks out so the first part i was very i was mildly intrigued by how disorganized and disheveled and unhappy they seemed because i think it was really portraying the beatles as they really were in real life i don't know why they sold this film to everybody as the sunny side of the beatles got to see the fab four again in the studio making their their last songs and their last live appearance because the film isn't isn't about that at all i can tell you that all three parts overall it's a very dark very unhappy group of guys i don't think they all want to be together anymore um [Music] you can tell they don't and i think the thing that i i really took away from this film is that if you've ever been in in a band i'm a musician i've been in duos and i've been in a band and it's very hard work and if you've got personalities that don't get along if you've got people you don't like that are in the band it makes coming to work come going to rehearsals torture and i don't know if john lennon was was drunk or high in this first episode of the three episode series but a lot of guys come into any band stoned or high or drunk and you know the beatles had reasons to be drunk and high they had lots of pressure on them of being a beetle and publicity and then the paparazzi and all the bad things are being said about them in the press but your average band we really don't have that kind of pressure most of us don't but they they think it's part of the persona you've got to be a drunk you've got to be high you're going to have a needle in your arm to be in a rock band um but i think i think that what the film really does is it really shows the authentic side of what the beatles are going through between 1969 and 1970 and and how miserable they were especially in the first part i did not see four happy individuals but something happened between part one and part two after george leaves the band they go have a chat with him they try to get him to come back to the band he quits the beatles he walks out they get him to come back so they must have said something to him like look mate let's just get through this let's put on our best face put our best foot forward and try to finish this project and then we can talk about breaking up later because i don't think any of them were happy ringo i don't know ringo hardly said two words in the whole film he just basically sat back like this i uh you know sleeping in his chair and i get the feeling that this was a band that was on the way out and it gave you a really good idea how hard it was to be in this band and how many eagles there were you had george who had his idea how things should be you had paul and how he had ideas of how things should be and how songs should be arranged you had john who had met yoko and his his mind i don't think was even on the band anymore he was he was with yoko he wanted to do his own thing and i think this is a band that was just like like any of the beatles have said in any of the interviews you hear of them they were it was like a marriage that was over they were done and there was time to get divorced and it was just it was just a matter of time before this band broke up but i think you get to see the tension between the four guys and the problems they're running into and trying to come up with this film and come up with a final concert and come up with all this stuff i don't yoko ono was in this film quite a bit and paul mccartney makes a comment in the film and says wouldn't it be funny if 50 years from now that they say the yoko broke up the beatles just because he's set on an amplifier and from what i see nobody was bothered by yoko being there they even let her scream and yell and do her singing whatever you call that screaming that avant-garde singing she does where she screams they'll let her do three or two or three songs like that and people seem to be getting into it and uh i think these four guys were open-minded about john's wife they were open-minded about paul's wife they're open open-minded about i mean ringo brought his wife paul brought his brought linda and his daughter heather or his stepdaughter heather so i think you get an inside view of their family life that they were growing up they were moving in different ways they had different directions and different intentions so i think this movie really gives you an inside look not the sunny side of the beatles but the real beatles the real people who were struggling with addiction struggling with being in the band struggling with the pressures of being in a band what i saw in this film was not only how it was to be a beetle how it was to work in the beatles it was also gives the viewer who doesn't know what it's like to be in a band how hard it really is this is an authentic view of slogging through all these songs trying to learn a song for a set list whether it's a a gig in a bar or a gig at shea stadium or a gig on the rooftop of uh apple or emi or wherever where we happen to be having it you saw the real beetles in this you really there was no personas being put on it and the in the second half of the second part john kind of comes to life and in the third part john is more over the public john that we see and i don't know where that came from i don't know if he sobered up and all of a sudden the drugs wore off and paul sat down with him said look mate you got us sober up to finish this film because we need you in this but overall i walked away with this feeling of i'm glad i saw it but i felt very disappointed in some ways and i'm not disappointed i think i felt very um i guess i felt brought back to earth i i still even though i've kind of dispensed with and done away with the myth of the beatles the myth that they all talk about john talks about trying to get away from i think this really solidified that for me that made me realize that the beatles weren't what i thought they were and boy did these guys smoke cigarettes and cigars and drink wine they were down in the wine and the beer and the stickers they smoked these cigarettes that for like this long like you know american cigarettes i think are about this long maybe four inches three and a half inches their cigarettes were like six inches long or something where they were sucking down those cigarettes like crazy but um i kind of walked away from it going wow the guys that i grew up believing in and idolizing i think i've got a good a good feeling what they were really like more like what there were is people and i can see that john didn't really have much to say he didn't you know for the first two two parts of the segment he didn't really say much of anything and most of the time he sound like a gibbering idiot you know he does that jabberwocky talk like well we'll talk about elephants and rainbows today and everyone's like what are you talking about john well you know i've got a fever and my ball sack is aching you know i'm like okay that's hilarious john uh why don't you go back with yoko and you know pick bugs off of each other but the the most amazing part of the film and the thing that choked me up at the end is i'm assuming this all went down the way it was portrayed by peter jackson in in that sequence but the most amazing thing was that they stumbled and bumbled around for the better part of three weeks and as a viewer you had no idea if you didn't know the beatles and you didn't know what the final product was you know 50 some odd years ago you'd have no idea what they're about to do on the rooftop and paul kept saying well don't worry mates he kept saying that um is it john glenn's the producer of the film he said don't worry you know we'll pull it all together because when our backs are against the wall that's when we perform our best and he kept saying that to john john would say a tuesday don't worry when our backs are against the wall that's when we perform the best and when these guys stepped on top of the roof and started playing man it was magical it was magical that rooftop performs just a few songs they played they they they didn't even know what they're going to do they had a set list down they had the songs kind of figured out but they just came to life and they made a couple of mistakes but it the energy and this is some things that most people don't understand if you're not a musician the charisma and the energy of the beatles is really what comes through in their music and that's what i think brian epstein heard in the cavern all those years ago he saw these guys with his charisma when they stepped on stage they went from being the drunken john and the quiet ringo and the pissed off george and the bossy paul to paul the showman john the serious singer you know he was belting out lyrics and music and ringo was playing the drums real nice and billy preston was there i think you get a real good feeling of who these people were as musicians and i've always maintained that the beatles were never technically the greatest musicians you know billy preston technically is probably a superior musician with a keyboard but the charisma that the beatles bring forth in the energy and the music that they they bring to life in their live performances and their music is who they were and i think that's what you get to see in the final rooftop concert even though i've seen it 100 times before i saw it from a different a completely different perspective now you know if you're not a beatles fan um i would have to say just from my my wife enjoyed it she's not a beatles fan so you're probably going to enjoy it but you're probably going to be bored because they just show them rehearsing songs over and over and over again like i've got a feeling don't let me down and get back i think if i ever hear those songs again right now if i hear them within the next two weeks i'm just going to throw my radio out the window i i dream about this we took three nights to watch this and every night i've watched it i've dreamed about this movie every night it's kept me awake at night i don't know why it's weird weird things like i'm there in the studio with them as one of the sound crew or the film crew watching them but i think if you're not a beatles fan i think you'll enjoy it you'll have to take in small bites but overall i'd have to say this is a movie you should see especially if you're a die-hard beatles fan this is one that you should go out and and spend the extra money to sign up for disney plus and watch it but don't a lot of people walk away from it and some of the remarks are seen on the film people are in heaven i think the beatles are even more amazing now than ever i'm not i walked away kind of while they just the most amazing thing about this band is that they're they're kind of slogged through stuff and they they managed to pull pull together make it sound like magic if that's really how it happened but i walked away kind of being unimpressed with them as musicians as individuals and i saw them as a band that was disintegrating and falling apart and if anything it did away with the myth that yoko broke them and broke them up yoko didn't break them up they were red already on the way out george has definitely had one foot out the door already john did too and paul kept making fun of john in the film about oh probably tomorrow you'll be in a bag a black bag somewhere with yoko john's like yeah yeah yeah that's probably what we'll be doing because john had that whole bagism thing that he was doing in the late 60s to for peace and all that stuff so there you have it um you know i basically saw it as more of a pessimistic thing a realistic view of four guys who were near the end of their careers at in that band and it was a great portrayal to show this the tension and the struggle of those four guys i didn't see guys having fun in the studio but i saw four guys that when they stepped foot on the stage all their differences melted away all their differences melted away and they became the beetles and they became performers and that's what it's all about so there you have it um have a good day thanks watch watch the beatles get back by peter jackson rent my movie the artist a documentary it's all about being an artist have a good day bye
