probably unsure of what certifications exist what educational opportunities exist out there to understand project management and help advance in your career I'm going to break down and talk about project management Institute or PMI and all of their certification offerings there's many and so we're going to talk about them and how you can use that as a path or map if you will from the entry point of your career through on now many people ask me should I take a certification and the short answer to this is it depends it's obviously going to be incredibly personal to you whether or not a certification is the right path questions that I would ask myself personally before I would opt for a certification what am I looking to get out of the certification are there other ways to accomplish that without a certification what is the certification costing me in do I think I'm gonna hit any necessary Roi those are three main questions that I would personally probably choose to ask you want to make sure you really identify what your goals are and why you're taking the certification and whether or not the certification is going to help you with your own personal goals once you've answered that question in the affirmative yes you want to take a certification you think it's going to help you with your goals then let's talk about where you are in your career path and which certifications might make sense for you the first entry point or level that you might think of is I'm new to project management entirely if you are considering becoming a project manager or looking into project management as a career path but actually don't know anything about project management full stop I think you need to consider alternative opportunities for project management education before considering a certification yes you are in fact eligible for many of the PMI certifications but I think stepping into a certification without know anything about project management might not necessarily be the best choice you could end up in a situation where you have a certification it might be getting you interviews but you might not be able to talk the talk or really even understand project management methodologies or why project managers do some of the things they do there are other certifications that are more focused on actually educating you about project management than the PMI certifications and I think this is a really interesting point project management certifications are about taking a test to prove that you understand project management methodology if you want to learn because you're a true beginner and want to sort of dip your toe in the water so to speak around project management understand if project management might be a good fit for you that's where something like the Google project management Coursera certificate might be a better fit it's going to actually provide hours of content around project management and understanding project management work I did an entire video assessing the Google project management certificate compared to a PMP I'll link that down below in the description for you guys if you're interested in watching that one of the main points of feedback from a lot of people is that a lot of people for whom they weren't sure what project management was or if they wanted to get into project management taking a certificate like that through Coursera that was a bit cheaper than the PMI opportunities was helpful in at least understanding for them whether or not they wanted to pursue a PMI certificate [Music] I already have an interest in project management you've already been exposed to it you know that you want to become a project manager but you might not have any formal project management experience this is where PMI actually has a really nice breakdown of their certification framework there are quite a few different certifications they offer there's of course the most popular which is the capm or certified associate of project management to help differentiate yourself as a project manager that you really understand project management methodology and also help you learn the lingo help you talk the talk of project management there are some requirements for the capm no you do not need to have any work experience as a project manager but there are other requirements so listen up you need to have a high school diploma and 23 contact hours now these contact hours are basically some sort of project management education they say that their project management Basics online course fulfills that prerequisite but so does the Google Coursera project management course so something for you to think about is how you get those educational hours towards the capm is up to you but you do have to do some sort of required education so at that level one of no actual formal project management work or minimal project management work you have the capm available to you as a certificate that you can take the other options which are pretty interesting is a dasm or da SSM so these are disciplined agile scrum Masters or discipline agile senior scrub master I think this is pretty cool because if you had a more of an interest in agile as opposed to Waterfall methodologies or just more interested in becoming a scrum Master you have a certification option here for you there is no experience requirement for this certification as well so again if you're on that level one no formal experience you could go and get this certification but there are education requirements again so the education requirements for this one are a two-day dasm training from a disciplined agile partner I honestly have no idea how much that could cost but I'm assuming you would have to pay for it and there's no other formal education requirements so this one's also interesting the capm requires a high school diploma but the dasm does not so maybe for whatever reason you never got your formal secondary degree this is something you could go get as a certification even without that [Music] experience you're moving on from a level one project manager into let's call it a level two project manager what's available for you as that more seasoned project manager professional so at the three year mark for experience you now become eligible to sit for one of I think the most well-known certifications from PMI the project management professional or PMP certification then PMP certification does have some requirements there are educational requirements you have to have a high school diploma a bachelor's degree and 35 hours of project management education training or the capm and then they have experience requirements so from The Experience perspective you have to have 60 months of experience leading projects if you have a high school diploma 36 months leading projects with a four-year degree so three years of work or 24 months if you have a graduate degree so at least two years of work experience regardless of what kind of degree you have potentially up to 60 months the capm can be a very valuable certificate it really is pretty well known internationally now I will caveat this with some countries prefer certifications like the prince too so if you are a foreigner who's considering working as a project manager in the United States PMP is widely known and recognized but if you want to work in another country like the UK you might want to consider something more like the prince too what else is available at that level two so to speak season practitioner they also have the DAC or discipline agile coach so let's say you went for the scrum Master certification what's available to you on that path this disciplined agile coach has the same educational requirements as the dasm button has an additional experience requirement so in this case three years of agile coaching or Consulting experience and you need to have had the da SSM certification so this is a discipline agile senior scrum Master certification so what you can see what PMI is doing here is they're creating an art creating a path creating a career trajectory for you to be able to move along these certifications if they interest you so if you are a skilled practitioner Midway in your career or you've had some a few years of experience or considering agile you could certainly pivot into agile scrum master and then move on that way and become a coach from threes have experienced the next jump up for PMI certifications is actually eight minimum years of experience and at this point they have two additional certifications for their skilled practitioners pgmp and the pfmp so a program management professional and a portfolio management perfect now these are going to require significantly more years of experience if we were to break down the requirements for these certifications you're looking at an education requirement in this case at least a high school diploma could be a four-year degree or a post-grad program and there's an experience requirement so they're looking at the experience requirement will vary depending on what your education level is but with the four-year degree they're looking for four years of work as a project manager and four years of work as a program manager both in order to be eligible to sit for this certification so what you can see here is that there is a trajectory there is an arc from what I would consider an l0 all the way up to an L1 and L2 and L3 professional there are various certifications that depending on where you are in your career path depending on what your goals are you are eligible for and they might help you hit those goals achieve those goals much faster one thing we did not talk about on this video is specialization certifications that PMI offers they offer quite a few around risk management scheduling professional agile hybrid citizen developer practitioner I'm not sure right now sort of what the ROI is on these specializations and certainly I think you probably would know for yourself if you're on a path where the specialization makes sense for you I hope you guys found this breakdown of all these certifications offered by PMI and how they work depending on your level depending on your skill set depending on your understanding of project management and your experience helpful if you did please give this video a big thumbs up and let me know what questions you have Down Below in the comments if you took one of these certifications I'd be interested to hear from you why did you take it and are you planning on taking another certification in 2023 we'll talk to you guys next time bye foreign [Music]
