Return to the Arctic - HALIBUT Spearfishing in freezing waters

[Applause] [Music] I said I'd be back to the arctic circle for a halibut here we are [Music] [Applause] [Music] the mass of the roofs I wonder how they know the roof less than two days ago I left Australia and here we are about two thousand case from the North Pole day one just arrived if the place is amazing there's gonna be a big halibut out there somewhere and we're gonna weigh it on that big thing we didn't waste any time and headed straight out onto the boat I'm thinking we gonna go get dessert not some Cod any day sunshine we're gonna get but that's no way for you that's tropical out there [Music] [Music] we were hoping to find some Cod or Pollock on these offshore pinnacles but it was completely dead just miles and miles of kelp we then started hunting for what we were actually here for halibut we proceeded to check out some of the spots that we'd seen on the charts prior to our arrival we swam and swam and swam over this flat and boring country that halibut love to live on at the end of the day I've got a glimpse of what this trip would hold for us [Music] didn't see bugger-all today didn't even see any bait just try to use spot immediately within 20 seconds of me jumping in I didn't even have my gun loaded my gun was sitting on the bottom I could see a little halibut not a monster but I'm still pretty stoked on this it's it's been a long time coming it's kind of surreal really like I've just been thinking about this for a year and Here I am with a snow-covered mountain in the background and I finally got a halibut despite being his first time in Norway Josh didn't have any problems spotting the flatfish oh don't point that she cuz I didn't pull the trigger but those place yeah like most flatfish these place are sensational eating especially at this size that was it mate eight degree water work look for these flats booties slow start to the day didn't find any Cod or anything like that but last spot of the day found some flatties some nice little halibut beautiful eating we're about to fill up those up and the place as well Giuliana's cooking dinner and we're gonna watch this sunset while we fill a fish [Music] this is with the fish what's this in a Hollywood place ah place okay and tomato it will be tomato and special olives [Music] cook it in the heaven we all fell asleep pretty quickly after dinner dreaming of what tomorrow would bring [Music] we drove over a lump that showed a heap of life on the sounder further investigation was definitely required [Music] full of baccala by reading the first one despite being from Australia Josh didn't have any problems with these cold water species but we didn't come here for COD we came here for halibut [Music] monkfish tail is often found on the menu of top European restaurants but this guy had a little bit more growing to do before that [Music] his nervous and erratic shoal of cod confirmed there was a big predator in the area a moment I had waited over a year for [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] I could see that the spear was dragging across the bottom and I was so nervous that the mana was going to get cut on a rock a we're desperate to get a second shot as soon as possible [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] after not even seeing one of these things last year God further north its where there is crap it's raining it's five degrees outside the waters eight degrees apart so a school a Cod flirt flat ground on the bottom looking to be real nervous how they're just next to a rock at about six seven meters of water five meters of water I don't know what it was just just halibut with its head up and I just I'll crap myself I was like I can't believe this actually happened and way down to put a shot in it I just didn't want it to spook so I probably shot a bit far away but sort of speaking out the other side drag along the bottom start a scream with like euros a with a halibut with snow-capped Mountain here we go here we go the years of planning in the days upon days swimming around in freezing Arctic waters it all just faded to nothing as I look down at this halibut and I realised I'd achieved my dream that I've been chasing for so long but my moment was over pretty quickly arctic weather Juliana Juliana has just about a massive Alamut [Music] Josh quickly ended the struggle with a great second shot [Music] [Music] so what the maid it was definitely time to go in and fill it these fish I I can find a word today I am very excited da is this your biggest fish ever is it bigger than you yes 9 when staying at a registered fishing lodge in Norway you're allowed to export 20 kilograms of meat one big slab three more to go it's going to be delicious we're going to eat all this take your home you'll enjoy it for the next few months looking forward to it [Music] another good size Philip [Music] after taking out the cheek fill its it's time to flip the fish over and take the meat off the bottom side problem from these guys Polsky's and we have some fish ready to take back to England and Onslow know missus Haley boot we'd also managed to find a few Icelandic scallops throughout the day oh it's special home we're gonna get some more tomorrow down well I good yeah [Music] my plan for the day was to swim near Josh and act as a second set of eyes hoping to spot any big halibut that may be around [Music] we both saw loads of little halibut but I saw one not so little halibut just finished a drift with Josh about an hour and a half long probably a kilometer looking for halibut saw three little halliburton knew there was going to be big ones around somewhere and right at the end of the drift I come across a big rock and then sitting behind that rock out of the current was just an absolute monster monster howl but way bigger than the one I shot yesterday it was probably I'm gonna say possibly 80 kilos it was just fat through the tail and I screamed the Josh to try come over tried to swim away from it slowly and as he came towards me the halibut just slowly slowly swam off so no Heluva for Josh yet but good another two days and fingers crossed we can find him a big fish what do you think it Andy thinkin I don't want to go in don't elevate we searched and searched but there's just so much ground to try and cover [Music] why why why are we here for the halibut there's no halibut all the elevator pitch shot and eat it bargain a tough day yep tough tough day the Sun was just about gone so it was time to head home get some rest and do it all again tomorrow oh I'm really glad it's raining and the winds picked up to 25 knots we've been seeing these fish and having been up to get onto them so two days left hopefully we'll get one today [Music] [Music] today for chasing these things I shot one and missed it so bad sometimes this one about five minutes before frustrating but anyway it's time to get bigger around still pretty high I think because we've had two big ones I was just about to answer my own question I quickly stuck my head up to see if Josh or Andy were near pike but I couldn't see them anywhere and I was approaching this fish front on definitely less than ideal [Music] I was going for a headshot but I ended up way back in the tail with my terrible shot this halibut was trying to tow me to the North Pole and it was so hard to get Giuliana's attention because the wind and the waves are up it was really really rough that's where this float comes in pretty handy [Music] I knew it was a bad shot but not that bad [Music] look at Juliana the halibut even pulled tight my 400-pound snap clip being birdy today is a cold cold affair the wind is freezing has been blowing so hard off these mountains and then to top it off it's been raining but we've managed to find a few finished rocks got a nice palette for the sporting about 10 15 20 kilos not really sure but after missing one after I put a buck fever he managed to put a shot in the next one stoned it just about so he's pretty happy with that but he really wants a big one and I come across another one today that was just about to leave and it was probably about 30 35 kilos so got lots to fill the freezer with but yeah just really hope that Josh can get a fish just really feel for him so you come all this way but we have tomorrow and I know what he's feeling but we can do it getting desperate need some hot water in my gloves it's so warm it like burns it feels good hot tip if you want some hot water and you're on a boat freezing your bum off in the Arctic Circle around the edge in for a little bit and use the patel the tell-tale from the water jet the water pumped to warm your hands up much nicer and just like that a things can change in an instant I just dropped the boys in for one last drift it's 5:00 p.m. here it's pretty damn dark and it's freaking cold and Andy has just shot himself a helmet great second shot mate Hallie bird now help required do you see the blinking oh yeah so uh good choice for the last riff mate yeah is a great choice and last is there no I saw I've only spent 24 hours in the water without saying I did there who needs me man put us on the spot the helots look at him pretty guy was this one Julianna this is Hollywood havin delicious bueno BOM born of mm-hmm wait oh I'm fourteen thousand kilometers away from my family two thousand kilometers from the North Pole it's freezing cold the weather had taken a turn for the worse it was blowing 25 knots and pelting rain we weren't even allowed out at the lodge until 10:00 a.m. because of the wind warning things weren't looking good for Josh but it only takes one fish [Music] with two big fish that had just spooked on him at the last second morale was hitting an all-time low I jumped in the water in an attempt to help spot a halibut but Josh didn't really need anybody's help [Music] [Applause] [Music] I gotta get on is he take water right and a visit [Music] yeah we're the talking [Music] one of my pop up you ready long days in the Arctic Circle do these things and then go I make start for your mate we had one last thing to do Icelandic scallops [Music] [Music] these delicious little beauties didn't even make it to the kitchen before being eaten [Music] [Music] it goes without saying we were pretty popular when we got back to the fishing lodge with a bucket full of scallops and the Polish guys fed us a lot of vodka - I'll be damned broken busted up the Polish it will be dive gear true smells horrendous in here is that your father is that the wetsuits that's a fart like all great adventures they have to end somewhere that is until next time but are they easy to shoot me like everyone thinks they are definitely not they move quickly there you go those lovely
