hey guys welcome back to my channel i'm jessica flynn and i am the owner and maker of flint's sister's boutique and today we're going to be doing another cutting board tutorial only this video will serve more as like an inspiration piece since like last week we just did the other cutting board tutorial in the crescent moon shape if you haven't watched that video go check it out i love how that one turned out but this is more of an elegant and refined kind of look i'm going to show you how to get really bold color with just a couple elements in the pour so i hope you guys enjoyed this video i'm gonna have all the products that you see listed and linked down below in the description box you might even find some discount codes for either as well so that's enough chit chat for me let's go ahead and get started [Music] all right you guys so we're going to start out by prepping our board to prep it i just use a 80 grit sanding block and sand all the surfaces of the board so make sure you get over under around and through the reason i'm doing the back side of the board is because i'm going to be taping this off and in order to get my tape to adhere really well i like to just sand it up a little bit once we're done sanding i'm going to wipe this down with some tack cloth if you needed to use some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel to help clean off any more debris you could do that as well but the tack cloth should be sufficient i'm using regular blue painters tape to completely mask off the back and i'm going to use a vinyl kind of squeegee tool to really adhere it well to my wood board i'm going to use a craft knife to cut off all the excess keep this line really clean because on this half of the board this is the line that our epoxy will kind of end at so you want to have a clean line where it's going to stop after it drips on the end if that makes sense okay i'm also just going to cut out the circle from the hole that's on the handle this way all of our epoxy can just run freely through that hole and it'll finish off really nicely in the end all right and then once i've got the side all masked off how i want it i'm going to flip it around and mask off just half of the front side at a diagonal this particular design will have more of an organic line to the edge of the epoxy pore but i don't want to get any kind of epoxy on the front like from a i don't want to get it anywhere it's not supposed to be okay so sometimes that's happened and it's really hard to get it off of the wood or it's not supposed to be so again just masking off the front of the half of the board once we're done with this i am going to base paint the section where we're going to be doing our pour so i didn't do this in the past and i regretted it especially along the sides of the board where the epoxy drips down i didn't get as intense of color as i did on the front so taking the time to do this little base paint really makes a big difference i'm just using arteza acrylic paints i really love the arteza paints because i get good one coat coverage and i'm just going to paint kind of around about where i want the threshold of my pore to be it doesn't have to be perfect okay and also make sure you get the sides of the board really well if you've done one of these before and you notice that the sides of your board kind of was more transparent through the pour than the front then you will know why it's good to paint the sides first you don't have to but i just think you get a bolder more refined look after i paint this i'm going to set it aside to dry for a few hours and then we're ready to do our epoxy pour next i'll take you through all the colorants that i used for this design i started with mega lilac this is like a white to purple shifty mica from simply sarah custom creations then i've got this pearlescent powder from alumilite this is one of my favorite pearl mica mixes and then i use the white alumalite dye it's my favorite epoxy dye i've been using this for i think like three years now and then inspiration from simply stairs this is the most perfect gold so elegant the perfect shade of gold then i've got pure which is a custom medium chunky mix glitter from peachy olive glitters and then these clear mirror uh glass shards from amazon i'm gonna have all these products linked down below in the description box okay so to get started i have about 120 milliliters of epoxy mixed here i don't think i ended up using all of it um and i have it divided into a few different little medicine cups and i've already mixed my colorants into my epoxy before we got started here i start by pouring my focal point with that mega lilac which is what i'm going to arrange my glass shards on i wanted to put the clear glass shards over this iridescent kind of purple shifty mica so that it shines through some of the clear points of those glass to give it a little more like dimension in whimsy i just really love that look and after i put the glass shards down i sprinkled some of that pure custom glitter mix right over the top of it again just to add a little more sparkle and shine it almost makes it look like i don't know fantasy crystal or something it's just so beautiful i did the same technique in my crescent moon tutorial a few weeks ago and i just absolutely love the look all right and then once i got that down i just started adding my other colorants so i framed the glass shards with some of that pearl additive from alumalite and then i just sort of layered the pearl and the white die but i didn't really do a whole lot of lines i didn't want anything too busy i wanted just a really elegant monochromatic look for this after i got all those laid down i went through with my heat gun to bloom some of those colors together get some blending i absolutely love this heat gun and the little nozzle it works really well for like moving and manipulating the epoxy just how i want without getting things too hot just be super careful because that nozzle gets really really hot so be safe next i'm going to drizzle in my gold just a really fine drizzle here if you're having a hard time getting that fine line straight from the cup you can use like a little silicone tool or you know a mixing stick or even a popsicle stick for that matter i also wanted to place the gold right along the edge of that white to act as kind of like a border i thought that was really pretty and then i took my heat gun to it to kind of blend and manipulate those edges to get things looking really beautiful and organic all right and then once i was all done with my design i went around with a gloved hand to kind of scoop off any excess along the back i also checked all the edges to ensure that they were evenly covered as well and then i'm going to sit this on a very even and level surface to dry i've already leveled out the surface that i'm going to have this drawing in you also want to make sure that it's not exposed to any kind of dust or debris i let mine dry in my epoxy cabinet because that's the safest place that i have in my house to dry all right uh and my epoxy is going to take about 12 hours to dry i'm using alumalites amazing clearcast for this one you can find a link as well as a discount code for it down below in the description box but your dry times may vary based on your epoxy type and brand okay and then after this has had time to dry we're going to put a clear coat over the top all right and so for my clear coat i have 30 milliliters of volumalites amazing clear cast already mixed here and we're just going to completely coat our design this will take some of the edge off of that glass shard section and it's also going to ensure that the surface of my resin is food safe alumalite's amazing clear cast is fda compliant and okay for food contact but if we have colorants in our epoxy that may not be the case that why that's why we want to do the clear coat over the epoxy that's been mixed with colorant so i just sort of very carefully took it right up and over all the way to the edge of my design there where the edge of the colored epoxy meets the board so you will notice like a little bit of run over i think i got a little bit too much of clear over my design there onto the wood but that's okay so anyway i'm gonna let this dry for a good 24 hours before i mess with it but that's it pretty simple pretty simple design here so now my piece has been drying for over 24 hours i'm ready to remove the tape and start with the finishing you'll notice that there's a lot of drip build up along that tape edge that's okay if you have a stubborn tape edge just grab your heat gun and that will definitely help you lift and get a clean line from your masking tape all right and then once i got all that tape removed i like to just clean everything up with an 80 grit sanding block i did have some stubborn adhesive left over from my tape but the sanding block just took that right off okay i also sanded down some of the edges of that epoxy where it might have been a little rough where it meets the back of the board all right and then once we get that all sanded down and cleaned up i just like to use a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol to clean up all that debris go over it with a tack cloth then i go back over that again with my rubbing alcohol in the paper towel just to make sure that this is super clean no debris anywhere i like to polish up the epoxy side with like a clean paper towel or a microfiber cloth and then i'm going to go over all my wood sections to restore the shine with butcher block oil i get this at lowe's but you can also find it on amazon you can use walrus oil or whatever you prefer and i just apply a generous coat with my paper towel and i let this sit for at least 24 hours for the oil to soak in before i give it as a gift and these boards are food safe all right so you can use these as serving boards i wouldn't recommend using them as cutting boards just because you can't really use a lot of abrasive stuff to clean these they're hand wash only they're not dishwasher safe so that's it i hope you guys enjoyed this video i know i've got like three cutting board tutorials on the channel now but i just love making these and i think it's fun taking you guys through how i layered all the different colorants and elements to
